Carlo Ancelotti tried to look at the positives from tonight’s derby defeat and hasn't ruled Milan out of the Scudetto race.

“We weren’t too bad in the first half, but paid the price for Inter’s superior height in set-pieces, which eventually proved decisive,” he said after the 4-3 loss.

The Rossoneri were 4-1 down when Marco Materazzi was sent off for a second bookable offence – taking his shirt off during the goal celebration.

“After the break we attacked with every man on the field, which was unthinkable at the start when it was a balanced match. Perhaps the referee was a little too quick with the cards in an essentially fair game, but we have to adapt to the new regulations.”

Ancelotti realised the situation was desperate and made all three substitutions at half-time, introducing Alberto Gilardino, Ricardo Oliveira and Paolo Maldini for Pippo Inzaghi, Massimo Ambrosini and Marek Jankulovski.

“I put on an extra striker and the Gilardino-Inzaghi switch was always planned to give us more power upfront and help the midfielders by holding up the ball.”

Milan may have broken through their scoring drought, but the defensive record has been dismal with six goals conceded in two home games against Palermo and Inter.

“We made a mistake on the third goal scored by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but that was the only strike we could’ve avoided. Two were from set-pieces and Dejan Stankovic pulled out a fantastic shot.”

The Scudetto race is all but over now as far as Milan are concerned, as with the eight-point Calciopoli penalty confirmed, they are 14 points adrift of the leaders.

“We have to take it one day at a time,” sighed Ancelotti. “It’s still a long season with many games to be played. I don’t think this defeat was down to a psychological blow with the CONI Arbitration verdicts.”

And many more points to lose at home, isn't it Carletto?

8 points with few matches played is the number of points we lost in San Siro. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Oh c'mon, I think what Carlo said is true. Two of their goals came from set-pieces, and in those situations even weak teams can score. It's just a matter of luck and concentration. The other goal was scored from a magical shot by Stankovic. They probably shouldn't have left him all that space to shoot, but it still was a marvellous goal. The only goal they scored due to a brilliant combination was Ibra's goal. On the othe hand, we scored our 3 goals in open situations. No free kicks, no penalties, no long-range shots... if I remember well.

I want Carlo to stop this sh!t and DEMAND that transfers be made in January, it's perfectly clear that we don't have the team to compete with the big sides. The defence has let us down when we have faced potent attacks.

And sure Cafu and Maldini played awsomely today, but in the end it wasn't enough, and that is what we'll say come the end of the season, that it just wasn't enough.

We need fullbacks, a DECENT holding midfielder, that is able to make the xmas tree work, Ambro was disgraceful today, all he did was slip around for an entire 45 minutes, another forward and even a box-striker, Pippo's form has slipped FAST, we never saw it coming after he was scoring in practically every game, and I don't think that we can rely on Gila for all those goals. Even though his goal was sublime, probably the second best of the night, after Stankovic's

And what a goal it was!!!

I think this will be the best game of the season by far. Too bad we didn't manage another goal, we really should have made it at least 4-4 with all the chances we created in the second half, but Cesar really was holding strong up there, I don't know how he managed to make saves on those 2 shots from Cafu and seedorf

The second on Seedorf was incredible. Yet again the goalies play their best matches against Milan. How strange! (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Yeah I still can't believe how he managed to get his hand to that.

But even though we lost I am proud of our players today. And it still will be a confidence booster for us, at least our attackers can take into consideration that they can still score.

Since that January transfer is always tricky because of players being cup tied and all, I would try to go for these:

Mascherano and Tevez, both are failing big time in the premiership, I think it just doesn't suite them serie A and especially the way Milan plays would suit them perfectly.

Oddo. We still need another RB

Not much to ask I think. Oddo isn't expensive at all, if Silvio is willing to spend 90 million on R10, then 6 million should be very feesable for him.

Mascherano and Tevez are making a mess of it at the premiership and I don't think West Ham really see them as someone of value anymore since they haven't done anything actually good for the team. Plus if Carlo would want to field the xmas tree for any specific reasons these players would actually make it work.

Han, I would add Barzagli to your list as well because Sandro seems to be having 'mares every game now. And I don't know whether Mascherano and Tevez are the answer, I still don't get how they are perceived to be so great! I've seen West Ham a couple of times and even though they are in a poor team they just don't look very good.
It's just a shame we never signed Diarra.

True...Tevez and Mascherano don't impress me one bit. And I'm not so sure about mixing Argentines and Brazillians, I mean we are trying to build a football team here, not TNT.

It works if you have an Argentine defender and a Brazillian forward coz they are never in each other's way, but Kaka will inevitably be close to Tevez and Cafu and Dida to Mascherano....I smell trouble.

Nope, in fact I'm not even sure about Oddo, he's old...I don't think we can waste any time building up a new generation of footballers. Arsene took about 4 years to phase out and build a new team, in fact he started with the departure of Tony Adams. We should start soon too.

Bright, young full backs. Less than 25 years. Grind them into diamonds. And now is the time when you still have Cafu and Paolo to show them how it is done. Coz I want a FB like Cafu(in his best day) and not Oddo(in his best day).

A defensive mid, again young. DM's learn with experience not in years,so imagine having an expreienced DM who is only 26??

A centre forward...this is where we don't go for youth and talent. Here we need someone established, coz here we don't have a Plan B.

I agree. Also, even though I really believe in what argentinians can do, I have to admit they always seem to lack something and you can't be sure of what to expect. So yes they're good to watch but I don't want them.

And why is everyone hitting at Nesta ?? What did he do wrong ?? Kaladze left his man unmarked twice last night and we conceded two goals because of that while Nesta's only mistake was that he couldn't stop 3 Inter players in a counter-attack ... That's why I said we will have to make due with what we can get since this is the January transfer window not the summer one. All those 3 are not cup tied, Barzagli would be a great idea also.

I still think that the premiership doesn't suit Tevez and Mascherano and if we take advantage of their recent displays they could come in cheap. I think Serie A would suit them much better especially the way Milan plays.

We had Crespo in 04/05, and he got along amazingly well with all the other Brazilians, nothing has always has to be a big drama you know.

I think that at this time those 3 I mentioned are the most realistic options we have, unless we get some players from south America, which also has it's limits because you can only have a certain ammount of non EU players on your team

Isn't Barzagli going to Juve? I think I heard something... but I would welcome him. He's a very good defender and not a 30 yo.

Tevez and Mascherano... I don't think they'll leave West Ham. Kia is going to buy the club now and he's not going to sell their best players.
