QUOTE
Guardiola's Italian dedication

Thursday 28 May, 2009

Barcelona boss Josep Guardiola dedicated his Champions League triumph to Italian football and Milan legend Paolo Maldini.

Guardiola's side outplayed Manchester United and lifted Europe's most prestigious trophy after a 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico.

In his post-match interview, Guardiola, who played for Brescia and Roma, thanked the host nation and took time to praise Maldini, who was jeered in his final home game.

“I want to dedicate this win to Italian football and Maldini, who doesn't need to worry because the whole of Europe admires him,” the young Coach told Rai Sport.

“It is such a great joy and it has been a huge pleasure to win the Champions League in Rome. I want to give a big hug to all Italians.

“We know that we have achieved something magnificent here and I would like to congratulate the whole club and the fans.”

Guardiola invited former Brescia Coach Carlo Mazzone to last night's game as his guest of honour.

Calcio Debate: Why Didn't Paolo Maldini Ever Win The Ballon d'Or?
With his illustrious career set to come to an end next weekend, Gil Gillespie wonders why this legend among legends never picked up the games' most celebrated individual award.

Maldini - Why didn't he ever win the Ballon d'Or? (and Del Piro puts in a good word as well)

Because he's a defender... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Baresi, Maldini and R. Carlos all should have won it! Always goal-scorers were picked ahead of them... so very fair!

I think the Ball D'or one is simple. He never one it because he has never been the best player in the World over one season - at least since I've been watching football.

I was not watching football as much as I do now back then but from what I have seen and from what I have read he could have certainly won it in '93 or '94. Just like R. Carlos should have won it in '98, just like Deco should have won it in '04.

I think there's no denying it that forwards and big names are favored ahead of defenders and not-so-big names.

Carlos '98 I could maybe see, but Deco? Nah.

Shevchenko was surely not better than him that season. He was not among the best when he won it.

As for Maldini, a year I can clearly judge as I have seen as a whole, 2003, he finished 3rd behind Henry which is a disgrace. Nedved maybe deserved it more than Paolo but it should have been a close battle between these two, Henry should not be between them.

The Ballon d'Or nowadays is primarily about flash and one-season wonders than long-term consistency. Guys like Owen and Sheva won it in their peak year, and then fell off the radar thereafter in terms of form. CRonaldo's offensive numbers are half of those from last season. Cannavaro won it in '06 and we've hardly heard from him since.

I'm sure Paolo will take those five CLs over the Golden Ball any day, since the CLs were a team effort.

Paolo mostly cares about not having won a title with Italy.

Individually, he might not have been awarded the Ballon d'Or but he is the best player in history in terms of consistency; no one has played for 25 years as starter at the top level!

Henry could have won it 3 years between '03 and '05, he was ridiculously unstoppable.

2004 was simply unbelievable. He did extraordinary things week in, week out.

So...I know someone who'd surely take the honor and move this thread to the "past players" section...
