im grateful to see both in a milan shirt _ there is hardly anything between them but if you want more grit an determination ppl wud fink of gattuso but as ambro has shown in his perfomances he can slide tackle and get stuck in equally as well _ when it comes to attacking ambro is the clear winner but in defence perhaps gattuso has the edge by a whisker

Here's to you Gattuso and Ambrosini, and also lets stop this pointless arguing. Instead lets argue on why Favalli has not been thrown out of Milan, or lets speculate on who Oddo will reject next

Show me a better 4th choice CB (under normal circumstances) and I'll find you a thousand reasons for everything!

If I were to choose in between Rino & Ambro for the DM spot, I'd go for Rino. It was great to see how Rino made Cissy Ron his *****. He made Cissy fall on to the ground, wave his hands and groan like a pregnant lady. Forza Rino!
Of course, I love Ambro for his wonderful assist to Gila in the CL semifinal against Man Utd.

(Just out of curiosity, what position would you say Barry/Petrov/Alonso/Carrick play?)

Yet han says Rino doesn't attempt many passes because he knows his limitations. Doesn't sound like much of a footballer to me, which he isn't.

they are holding midfielders/playmaykers.

they have defensive reponsibilites, but get involved in the attack a lil more than they are concerned about defending (especially with petrov, alonso, barry) and of the 4 alonso i consider below average at defensing for central midfield player.

whereas a defensive midfielder or midfield destroyer. focuses much more on his defensive duties and wont venture forward as much since that is not his focus, in fact he sacrifices this priveledge so that others can attack. ei ambro and gattuso

i think a good example would be to compare vieira and makalele, both have defensive reponsbilities but makalale covers the space left by vieira whent hey have possesion becuase he ventures more much more.

veira being the holding midfielder, makalele being the pure defensive mid.

yes i agree ambro is better going forward than gattuso, but IMO the only reason he does this cuz we dont field that many attacking options. normally its 1 striker, two attacking mids, and a playmaker (pirlo) or 2 strikers, 1 attacking mid, and a playmaker.

when the 1 striker is fielded normally we have ambro with another dm and pirlo rarely gets high up the pitch so ambro ends up playing as a winger and is given that extra freedom.

meaning if ambro was in any other team he would be afforded as much freedom in the attacking zone, and from what i see when i watch milan games gattuso is more ffective defensively and not from foul stats. thats why i rate him higher.

A bad left sided winger to be exact....

He's not fast, can't cross especially with his left weaker foot, can't shoot, doesn't know how to get the over lapping fullback involved. So there goes the theory that he's good going forward (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

After four pages of discussion i am surprised that no one else has stated; it is irrelevant which player is superior, the important thing is that both players benefit the squad in their own little ways, and both can co-exist in the same lineup, and squad, and both can be used interchangeably

Agreed with everything you said except the bold part. I've always felt having one of them in the lineup is enough (unless we're facing a very attacking side like Barca). glad Leo was smart enough to use only one of them against Siena.

The Xmas tree formation is very effective in Europe, but when you are playing a team like Bologna there is no real need for three deep lying midfielders. On that point i agree, but against the stronger teams, a midfield consisting of two AM, two DM and a deep playmakers is effective

Like I said before, there's a reason Gattuso is known World wide and that's because of his image. If Ambro was more vocal and got into confrontations then that'd give him a bigger profile too.

he does and we usually go down a man because of it
