Mancini's contract secret
Sunday 22 April, 2007 ::: channel4.com
After months of speculation, President Massimo Moratti has confirmed that Roberto Mancini already signed a contract extension "some time ago."
Newspapers had suggested that even a Scudetto victory would not be enough to keep the tactician on the bench after their second round Champions League exit to Valencia, as figures as diverse as Jose Mourinho and Marcello Lippi were tipped to take over.
However, after today’s triumph in Siena, Moratti gave an announcement in a live television interview with Sky Italia.
“The contract renewal with Mancini has already happened a while back,†he smiled. “That allowed us to be relaxed. It’s a four years plus one deal.â€
That means the former Lazio and Fiorentina boss is tied to Inter until 2011 with an option to extend it for another year.
“I hope that it can last even longer and am optimistic on this issue. I don’t think we’re missing anything required to start a real era for the club. The rapport between the Coach, players and club is good and we are on the right road.â€
One transfer has to be made, as Luis Figo has already agreed a deal with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad.
“If Figo goes – and I continue to hope until the last moment he’ll change his mind – then clearly we will have to look around. We have a few options and will see what happens.â€
One of the key summer signings has been Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is Inter’s top scorer with 15 Serie A goals.
“I like to see a certain type of player wear the Inter jersey. Roberto Baggio called me to give his compliments for the Scudetto and this gave me pleasure, as he is one of the champions I love to wear our shirt,†continued Moratti.
“Now we will see what to do about the celebrations when we return to Milan. We honestly did not expect to win today, so we didn’t organise anything, but we will try to get the fans to meet with the players.â€
