English is a compulsary language in our schools from the moment we start to attend at the age of 3, plus watching TV helps (It's better then reading) (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Ofcourse it helps at least that's how I learnt to speak English at such a young age.

In Malta we get Italian TV also and most of us grew up watching the Italian channels, that's why most Maltese people understand and speak Italian, without ever learning it in school, English is our second language but some understand Italian more because we get the Italian TV channels for free. when you say books I think of literature books (or maybe mags) not "English for Time Pressed People" stuff.. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

So in this case I think a book is helping a non-proficient more in understanding a language cause he has all the time he needs to work up what's said instead of in a movie (or whatever) where he's been foundered under all those words per minute...

"English for time pressed people" (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

You are right about the book thing, but I think the secret is that you start listening to the language at such an early age. In my case I never learnt Italian (since I grew up with cable TV and always had English channels), so now, no matter how much TV I watch in Italian I can never understand it except for the words that are very similar to the maltese version (since our language has a lot of Italian roots).

Maybe I should get an "Italian for time pressed people" book and see how that works out for me (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
