With or without goal.com Maldini's retirement will be somthing special, that sure won't be neglected by the Azzuri. But it's a nice idea...

So Lippi said he'd be in favor of Maldini playing for the Azzurri in a farewell game (but that the Feb. 10 game with Brazil is too soon to organize stuff that'd go with it).

Here's what Il Capitano said about it today:

QUOTE

[Playing a final game with the national team would be 'a real pleasure' for Paolo Maldini: this is what the rossonero captain said in an interview with Milan Channel. "Yes, it'd be a pleasure," Maldini said, "It wouldn't be a real return to the national team, but an occasion to celebrate a long career in the azzurri jersey and for that I'd be very pleased."

Maldini explained that "it's something that happend spontaneously, I didn't know anything about it. If and when it happens," he said, "is a decision that is up to those in charge. Keeping in mind that the calendar is full, it's right that coach Lippi should pay attention to the exigencies of the team."]

I just hope it turns to be a real match, not a farewell match with 40 and 50 years old ex-footballers. I mean, I enjoy watch does reunions for old times sake, but, somehow, I'd like to see Maldini in a real action match, at least a friendly, and not does matches were everyone gets 15 minutes of time and no one really tries to defend.

I agree and it should be against a good team.

I wish it could be the Brazil friendly... I want it to be against a top team... against a 'top striker' (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

It'd be great if it was against Brazil since he also has many friends and teammates among the Selecao but the most important thing for his farewell game would be to take place in Italy.

I know some people on the Milan fan sites are against him playing for the Azzurri one last time, but I'm all for it as long as he is.

Given that he's quoted on Milan's website as being in favor of it, i'd say he's up for the idea. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Ro, why do the other milanisti not want to see him play for the azzurri again?

Something about his career not being as "lucky" with the Azzurri, that it's not a meaningful match...they all have different opinions.

I kind of agree up to a certain point, his career wasn't as lucky on the national level. But if they are playing a friendly, in Italy, and can get it organized where everyone is happy, why not?
