Vieri backs 'traitor' Ronaldo

Saturday 3 February, 2007 ::: FI

Christian Vieri has played on both sides of the San Siro and given his backing to Ronaldo after he made the same journey.

“It’s a little strange to see him with a Milan jersey, because in Italy he’d only ever played for Inter,” commented the well-travelled hitman.

“It is a choice that must be respected. He wanted to leave Real Madrid, Milan wanted to sign him, so he did well to take that opportunity.”

The Nerazzurri have dubbed Ronaldo a ‘traitor’ for returning to Serie A with their arch rivals, but Bobo doesn’t see the problem.

“If someone plays for a club and leaves, does that mean he is not allowed back into the country or something? What was he supposed to do, retire?

“I can understand it might irritate the fans, but he was at Inter many years ago. It’s only right he is allowed to make his decision and play where he wants to go.”

Vieri’s own passage to the Rossoneri was less than successful, as after six months and a handful of appearances, he left for another disappointing spell in Monaco.

“At the start it feels a little strange, as you’re wearing different club colours and in a new environment. I got on very well at Milan, though, right from the start with the Coach, teammates, trainers, physiotherapists and fans.

“They gave me an exceptional welcome and I’m sure they’ll reserve the same for Ronaldo. I am waiting for his phone call so we can go to dinner some time. We’re too old to go partying now, so dinner and an early night it is!”
