Nice thread starter kurt. But I fail to see where the improvement will come from at this point...

I think we should try a 4-2-3-1 formation here, as han suggested. However, the lack of a pure DM means we'll have to cope with Ambro, and that Nocerino will be left out. Here's my idea:

Abbiati
Abate - Mexes - Zapata - Antonini
Montolivo - Ambrosini
El Shaarawy - Boateng - Emanuelson
Pazzini

Obviously, if Nocerino could play as DM it'd be great, but I don't think he can pull that off.

I think there will not be enough time to get the team trained in a new formation. We tried that whole false 9 thing last week with Boateng and it was supposed to work but flopped miserably. No one's fault. You cannot train the whole pre-season with one team, and then in the space of 3 weeks have the rug pulled from beneath you.

For better or worse, we seem at the moment to only have players who suit the 4-3-1-2. I'm going for the three points this time, and therefore a back to basics approach.

Abate---Mexes---Bonera---Antonini
----Urby----Montolivo----Nocerino
-------------Boateng--------------
----Bojan----------Pazzini--------

Bench: Yepes, Zapata, De Sciglio, El Sharaawy, Flamini

I'm not sure if Bojan is comfortable on the right, though I know his left is his stronger foot. Urby is my only un-orthodox position, but I'm hoping Abate and Urby on the right together, will create a quick counter combo. While he can always switch with Boateng during gameplay

Pazzini needs to play for obvious reasons, and therefore Urby as well, since he is the only one in the team capable of crossing.

I'd stick with the 4-3-1-2 for the reasons Jack mentioned, but I'd play El Shaarawy as an attacking trequartista. It's clear that without Ibra now Boateng can't shine anymore and he needs to get back to play as box to box midfielder. So I'd go with this:

Abbaiti
De Sciglio - Mexes - Zapata - Antonini
Boateng - Montolivo - Nocerino
El Shaarawy
Bojan - Pazzini

De Sciglio for the crosses.

I'd also start Mexes and Zapata. At times Yepes too. Bonera, even when good in pre-season, shows immediatly his liability again. Shame...

Naah, Bonera is just plain awful. There were a lot of guys we used to criticize here at MF on and on - Kaladze, Pancaro, Favalli, Zambrotta - to name a few. Well, all of them are better then Bonera.

Poor Bonera, what has he ever done except always keeping his mouth shut and accepting bench role? he's stayed at Milan for days like this, so I'd say he's earned his place in XI. he will be back on bench the moment better players will be available.

What??

So after all these Favalli/Zambrotta/... bashing's this is what you come up with? Now really, I find it hard to find a veteran who's always behaved nicely (well, except Zee (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ) no matter if he was benched or played right up front. I also remember this argument didn't pop up until now. Why the sudden change in approach?

I've always defended Bonera. he's not a very good defender and normally shouldn't be a starter. but he's one of the better squad players I can think of. always quite, and ready to cover. I find it hard to complain about him. it's not his fault he gets picked to play for one reason or another.

I don't know, you tell me. I thought Mexes wasn't ready, Acerbi needed time to warm up his diesel engine, etc.

I don't know, man. we've played only 1 game so far. isn't it too soon to make assumptions about who's gonna be a starters and who isn't? we've signed Zapata for a reason, maybe he wasn't ready to start against Samp.

The same logic was applied for Taiwo...but yes, it's too early. Thing it, Bonera should be our last resort.

I rated Zapata quite highly when he was playing in Udine. He was considered a good prospect, and I think that one of the starting positions should be his to lose. I know Acerbi is slow, but I think when paired with a cb with speed he could be effective ( think Mertesacker at Arsenal).

Still no Mexes and Abate... We really need those 2 back.

Allegri made it sound like the defence is a toss up between Bonera, Acerbi and Yepes. I find this ridiculous as none of those players are really good enough. He should put in Zapata and let him get as situated as possible. Messing around with the back 2 is just stupid. I hope that he doesn't continue playing these games when Mexes is back. We need stability above everything else.

I'd go with

De Sciglio--Zapata--Yepes--Antonini
Monto--De Jong--Nocerino
Boateng
Pazzini--Bojan

Allegri is saying that Bonera will start along side with Acerbi or Yepes in defence, while De Sciglio and Antonini will be on the wings. He says that De Jong will be in the bench, while Pazzini and El Shaarawy will lead the attack.

Basically we'll go with this:

De Sciglio - Bonera - Acerbi/Yepes - Antonini
Montolivo - Ambrosini - Nocerino
Boateng
Pazzini - El Shaarawy

Bonera was the one who made the most mistakes against Samp, yet he's the sure starter (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

El Shaa needs a timeout. He's not doing his best out there I didn't feel like he had his head in it at all. Bojan will be able to drop deeper and help out Prince a bit more

ALLEGRI: "Tomorrow Boateng will be the trequartista, El Shaarawy and Pazzini will play upfront. Boateng's conditions are growing, but it's normal because if the striker changes, he also has to change. I still have my doubts on who to start tomorrow vs Bologna in the defense. They did well vs Bologna, but we must improve. Acerbi played 15 games the past season at Chievo and he may play tomorrow. He's a young player and could make mistakes. Bonera will start tomorrow, he'll play with either Yepes or Acerbi, I have not yet decided. De Jong will travel with the team to Bologna, he'll be on the bench and will come up during the game. Bojan can play as the first striker, even if he doesn't has the physic. The midfielders will attack a lot. De Sciglio will start tomorrow, Zapata and Acerbi must grow. At the moment, it'll be Antonini who will start in the left flank."

Are you talking to Allegeri?! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) If yes, then he sure ain't listening. Everybody knows how stubborn Allegri is, particularly with new players. Maybe he thinks they need time to adjust, but unless your name is Ibra, you sure as hell will struggle to start if you are new.

Nigel de Jong and Bojan Krkic, as new signings, are likely to start on the bench and sub in. Mexes is not selected for the match against Bologna, appears not fit enough, plays with Primavera I think. Wouldn't be the first time Emanuelson won't start, if Ambrosini starts, then him with Nocerino and Montolivo are all Italian. Pazzini and El Shaarawy up front, while Robinho is injured. Our first three fullbacks are Italian. Our first two goalkeepers are two. Acerbi and Bonera could start I guess, but Yepes and Zapata I rather see.

Impressed by Acerbi so far as well.

What I'm not impressed by is the composition of our midfield. It looks like Monto and Nocerino are miles apart from Ambro. They need to get tighter. Keep the ball better

Really? Out for a month? When I saw him on the bench, I thought ''typical, first day since transfer window is closed, our only playmaker may gets a serious injury'' - now we will see how much we could use Aquilani, Merkel, ..., ...

So Montolivo is injured... My guess on how things will go for him now.

QUOTE
Tonight after the game Allegri on Montolivo's injury: It's nothing serious, I took him off the pitch just as a precaution. There is no need for panic he'll soon be back to training.

Tomorrow on acmilan.com: Montolivo will undergo some medical checkups as a precaution.

After the medical checkups on acmilan.com: Montolivo has pulled off his muscle and is expected to be back in 3 weeks.

After 2 months Allegri: Montolivo is finally back to light trainings. He's expected to be at his best condition in a week.

After 2 and a half months on acmilan.com: Montolivo has not been called up by Allegri for his game against (name a CL squad here, Zenit my guess) cos he doesn't want to risk him.

A week after that: Montolivo has been called up for Primaveras to regain his form.

After 3 months by Allegri: I've called Montolivo up but that doesn't mean he can start. He'll be on the bench and he'll be subbed in the second half.

After 4 months by acmilan.com: Montolivo is back with a great game. A great free kick and two assists against Pescara. Best transfer in Serie A so far. Forza Milan !

Absolutely. More than the defensive mistakes, more than the midfield organization, what we really stink in is attacking. Completely devoid of any ideas, slow and predictable. Any team would have a breeze defending from us. If Allegri doesn't change something through the course of this season, then we're screwed.

Oh, and Nocerino is having one hell of a stinker.

Like han said, I can't see how we can score in this one. We have zero creativity. Our fullbacks our sitting this match out, the midfield is too defensive while Boateng just shoots the ball around. El Shaarawy. who should be a connection between attack and midfield, once again disappeared.

We need changes, don't know why Allegri decided to put in de Jong.

Give the ball to Pazzini in the box, it's that simple. Good thing we didn't sign any creative midfield players though, God forbid we score goals, eh Silvio, Galliani?

Bologna could have scored 3 times by now, aside from the penalty. While we haven't created a clear cut chance
