The first leg of third qualifying round games going on today. Of note to Milan fans -- Dinamo Kiev is currently leading Gent 2-0, with the second goal having been scored by Andriy Shevchenko.

Yeah, out in qualifying, lost to Braga 4-2 on aggregate.

Dinamo Zagreb & Fenerbahce also went out tonight, and Ajax - just got through on away goals a large thanks to Suarez - again.

For those keeping track, Dynamo Kiev also went through. Shevchenko supplied two assists (3 total Dynamo goals scored) today. (per uefa.com)

Oddly (or not), this fish is no longer angry with Shevchenko. It's good to see him doing well.

Rosenborg faced Sweden's AIK over two legs, in a Scandinavian derby... and of course, the Norwegians came out on top with a 4-1 aggregate score.

Here's the draw for the play off round of this year's CL (from uefa.com)

Champions Route
FC Salzburg (AUT) - Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC (ISR)
Rosenborg BK (NOR) - FC København (DEN)
FC Basel 1893 (SUI) - FC Sheriff (MDA)
AC Sparta Praha (CZE) - MŠK Žilina (SVK)
FK Partizan (SRB) - RSC Anderlecht (BEL)

League Route
BSC Young Boys (SUI) - Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG)
SC Braga (POR) - Sevilla FC (ESP)
SV Werder Bremen (GER) - UC Sampdoria (ITA)
FC Zenit St. Petersburg (RUS) - AJ Auxerre (FRA)
FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) - AFC Ajax (NED)

Samp could've gotten an easier draw than Bremen.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I just find it funny due to the fact at the time they complained about getting Arsenal and showed no respect to other teams last season qualifying presuming they'd beat them, now they go out from a fairly minnow team!

So, the first legs of today's CL qualification ties are underway, and happily so. At half time, these two scores stand out:

Rosenborg 1-0 FC København
Young Boys (!!!) 3-1 Tottenham.

Oh Spurs, Spurs... you are a unique little something aren't you?

Young Boys needed to win by 3 in my opinion, so to only win by 1 and give up 2 away goals is a terrible score. Spurs will go through comfortable, unfortunately.

I think my dream CL group would see Milan and Rangers paired together in the same group for the first time since the competition began in '92, and both going through to the next stage.

I would, however, be a Rangers fan during the matches between the two so I'd keep a very low profile on here during those matches (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

They're an extremely undignified lot. Always have been. I just Utrecht can turn their Europa league tie around in the second leg.

Pazzo is having a good day today.

HT Samp 2-0 Bremen, both goals by Pazzini. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

EDIT: Cassano decided to play too. Outrageous backheel goal to make it 3-0. Aiee. But Rosenberg scores in added time so we go to extra time, I believe.

That's disappointing- I wanted Sampdoria to go through. Braga beating Sevilla 3:4 away is pretty surprising. So there will be 3 Spanish and 3 Italian clubs in the group stage.

Boy I feel sorry for Sampdoria, they were so close. Werder played superbly from second half and up though, so I guess they deserved to pass overall.

If Spurs can't make it through, we'll have 4 biggest footballing nations with only 3 representatives for this year's Champions League. Spain, Italy, England and Germany.

I think Werder played horrible football for the entire first AND second half. Rosenberg just got lucky. But in extra time Samp had no power left.

Well, Germany can't have more than 3 clubs in the CL, so three is as much as it gets.

How typical. Man U and Barca get free passes again while we have to fight to the death with teams who could all potentially be group leaders, minus Auxierre(sp?)

Why are people moaning about United's draw, Valencia won't be pushovers even though they've lost their stars, Rangers won't be that easy, at least away. The Turkish champions, away - Turkey, you're saying that's going to be easy?! Chelsea and Arsenal by far got the better draws out of the English teams, yet again, as usual.

We without doubt have the group of death. Then I'd probably say Inter's after that. Everyone in Group B must be laughing that is some low-quality CL group.

MILAN –

Milan coach Massimo Allegri’s comments about the Champions League draw: ‘Our group and that of Inter is certainly the most difficult one. Both of us will face tough and well-prepared teams. Obviously, playing against Real Madrid is exciting, it’s a fascinating match-up.

The San Siro and the Santiago Bernabeu will be sold-out as a spectacle is guaranteed. Ajax and Auxerre advanced through the preliminaries making a great impression, they are opponents to be feared. We have to play all these games always maintaining high concentration and full fitness. It’s a group of death, but we’ll play like Milan

So how much revenue does a club make for making the knockout stage?

Since with our group, advancing isn't a lock, we should probably consider part of the Ibra transfer fee (if it happens) as bringing us that advancement revenue in return.

An article posted here a while back explaining how it works.

18m for qualification and then 9m for Ro16 or something like that had we won in feb.

ok...so if we get 9m for the qualification, if Ibra gives us a 50% better chance to advance one round, that's worth about 2m just from that alone, not including the potential to go farther. I mean, it's not much compared to the wage+transfer fee, but if barca is asking for 30m for example, and we only want to go with 25m, we should keep that in mind.

I agree, we should. We need someone like Ibra who can provide us with the quality necessary to finish out of this ugly group.

We need to go to away game in Madrid with 6 points. I saw Ajax this seasion in a few games, and even though they have some nice players (in the attack), they are poor defensively and we can/should beat them both times.

I saw bits and pieces of their second game against Dynamo. The Ukrainians must have wasted at least 3-4 neat goal opportunities in the first half.

Ajax at San Siro wont be a problem. At ArenA Amsterdam it will be very difficult. Very hard team to beat there.

We should be able to get at least 4 points from Ajax. Same goes for Auxerre. Real at least 2 points.

4 points from Real Madrid

You have a low melting point.

QUOTE (ESPN Soccernet)
Inter, Madrid in tough Champions groups
Real Madrid, AC Milan and Ajax, who have won 20 European Cups between them, will meet in the group stage of the Champions League.

"Facing Real Madrid is very evocative -- it's a very stimulating challenge," AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said after Thursday's draw in Monaco. "The San Siro and Santiago Bernabeu will be completely full and it's sure to be a show. Ajax and Auxerre got through their playoffs brilliantly and are two very worthy opponents.

"We're going to have to maintain our concentration and physical condition for all these games. It's an iron-tough group."

Defending champion Inter will play Werder Bremen, Tottenham and FC Twente in Group A. Madrid has not won the competition since 2002 and has not been past the quarterfinals since 2004.

The last sentence is the only time Inert are mentioned in the article. Jesus, have we fallen that far that we're getting confused with them now? And if that's a tough group for Inert, then I'm the Queen of Sheba.

Those numbers are almost as far away from the truth as it gets.
You get 2 million for making the group stage and get another 600.000 for every win and 300.000 for every draw. 2,2 million for last 16, 2,5 for the quarterfinal, semis are 3 million, the CL winner gets another 7 and the other finalist 4 million Euro.
Well, that was 2006/2007 and I don't think they've increased the performance fee by 900%...
Source: uefa.com (German version)

Our group is indeed one of the toughest. But to be fair, Inters group with Twente, Schalke and OL is even harder. See us making the knocking stage though. With or without Ibra. Ajax is a big name, not much more and Auxerre is also not a nightmare to paly against. And well, we all know Madrid's ain't easy to beat.

At least 2 points against Real is way tougher than 6 points from Ajax. We should get 12 points from Ajax and Auxerre, maybe one draw. Real might beat us twice, maybe one draw.

Your counting money awarded per round. I'm including the TV Rights deals/sponsors from each level of CL that milan get for participating.

It comes around to that.

Winner of CL walks away with something around 70-80m.

It's not as easy as that. The amount of money a club gets depends on the leagues performance as well as on it's performance in that domestic league. You can't really give accurate numbers besides the money which is awarded per round because no one knows before the end of the season.

Yeah, it's almost impossible.

Then there's the size of stadium for each game, the share of ticket sales. Then the stadium for the final can differ in size so you can get more through ticket sales or less than the previous years. I mean, you could even cater for the extra merchandise sales on the nights and that technically is what you make because you are in the CL. It's really on a team by team basis, season by season. The only way you could realistically know is if you had the figures right in front of you as a chairman of a football team contending within it.

Not watching, but I'm glad to see Rafa is having such a positive effect on them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I can't believe that this guy is coaching Inter, 1 lucky CL win aside he ran Liverpool into the ground, can't wait to see him work his magic on our beloved cousins

I agree. After his appointment, I though that finally we have a chance to do something in the league.

I don't think I've ever seen Milito miss a penalty. This is a sign!!

Atletico played a great match, fully deserved to win the title. Inter were rather static and never dangerous.

I hate OT. Feel free to move the post to other thread.

1. Mourinho left the club.
2. Rafa - who is a decent coach but not for Inter - will drag them to their natural habitat: 3rd place.
3. Milan, if somehow gets Zlatan (kinda of miracle or so), will be the #1 favourite for the title.
4. 18th

PS: Ahum, Brilliant, old mate. You can haz Zlatan_Is_Brilliant username. I'll let you do it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Trouble is, Cesar, Maicon, Samuel, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Sneijder, Eto'o and Milito are still there... and Benitez doesn't really need to do much more than start those guys and that alone will win them most games.
As for the Scudetto, I think the only credible challengers to Inter are Roma and Juventus. Maybe I'm pessimistic, but as far as I'm concerned this Milan is a carbon copy of last year's Milan, except that the old guard is even older.

Zlatan would probably be sold on the following day he changes the username

Too bad his little trick didn't work on Milan and the club wasn't sold to some sheikh that wipes his @ss with 100$ bills (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Haha, maybe I should Porty.

It means a guarantee sale but it does also mean a European Footballer of The Year award and/or World Player of the Year! Pity it doesn't make teams of the year...
