Blog: The Pirlo Problem
Andrea Pirlo is the only irreplaceable figure for Milan. In this poor period of form, Susy Campanale insists that's not a compliment

He is regularly hailed as one of the greatest midfielders in the world, his vision sublime and his free-kicks laser-guided. Andrea Pirlo has made the role in front of the defence his own and over the past seven seasons has been at the heart of Milan's success in the Champions League, Serie A and Club World Cup. It was always said by Coach Carlo Ancelotti, teammates and pundits alike that he was truly irreplaceable. Unfortunately, that seems to be absolutely true.

There are many reasons for the Rossoneri's disastrous run of results, from a slow defence to an ineffective strike force, but perhaps the biggest loss has been Pirlo. He's still playing, because he has to, but he's in no fit condition to give the team anything right now.

In the 2-1 loss to Atalanta I'm not sure he got more than a couple of passes to their intended destination. Even his free-kicks have been abysmal of late and it's a trend going back at least to the Champions League ties with Arsenal. The effect on his confidence was made evident when his stoppage-time penalty was saved this Sunday.

What has happened to Pirlo? It's possible he is tired, as he seems to be the only player – even more so than Kaka – who cannot afford to be rested. Milan are lost without him, finding no link between midfield and attack, no coverage for the defence and absolutely no ability to dictate the tempo.

If anyone doubted how important he is for this team, then they only need watch the Diavolo struggle to break down a defence this season. The transfer market priority was meant to be someone who could fill in for Pirlo, but Yoann Gourcuff and Emerson just don't fit the bill.

Milan's run for fourth place is at risk, but Pirlo is also going into Euro 2008 in this shape. He was key to the World Cup triumph in Germany and had the 4-4-1-1 system still been employed this would have been a total disaster. Roberto Donadoni employs different tactics that can do without him, but it is still always better to have Pirlo at your disposal in a major international tournament.

Then again, perhaps it is best he does sit on the sidelines during much of the summer, as with the way Milan are constructed that's the only way he'll get any rest.

So true... Just this: close to 200 games for Milan and Italy in the past two and a half seasons! It's ridiculous... we should have found a worthy sub for him... among the many things that we should have done...

Could a slight formation adjustment like this help.. (just a thought/study break)

Pato
Seedorf Kaka'
Pirlo
Ambrosini Gattuso
Jankulovski Maldini Nesta Oddo

Pirlo is pretty much useless defensively. Maybe a more advanced role where he has protection behind him and doesn't hav to worry about defending as much. I know the point of the two defensive mids are to protect him. Having him forward of centre more often might allow us to unlock the defences more often. Also takes out some of the poor passing from ambro, although that could be an issue in the last third.

The othe issue is pirlo's stamina. He's like a 65-70 minute sort of player. A suitable replacement obviously provides a sub and also possible motivation to build that stamina or lack of motivation to perform for longer periods of the game. Its quite obvious if your spot isn't in jeopardy, there will be a lack of hunger. Particularly when you have won almost everything.

I have been wanting to see this formation forever... And we did use something very similar to this in last year's CL which we ended up winning.

I've been saying this for some months, I especially said that against Arsenal Pirlo was one of the reasons we lost! (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Someone who does many of the same things position-wise for his team that Pirlo does for Milan is Sporting's Miguel Veloso. I like him despite that kinky youtube clip Max found. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Might be worth considering a move for him.

As far as I'm concerned Diego can cover all of them... perfectly.

It's not just a sub for Pirlo though, we also need subs for Kaka and Seedorf as well. We also have aging squad players who can't be relied upon, FFS we haven't even got a decent goalkeeper! I sometimes wonder why we have been allowed to get into this mess, especially considering the amount of money we have made in these past few seasons. If we carry on like this I really fear for the future.

Ideal, but Galliani would baulk at paying for a player like that (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Its too bad Gourcuff never stepped up (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) He could have played a Pirol-esqe role and he would already be sutable for a sub. It looks like we should sell him and possibly buy another pirlo esqe player to do what he was supposed to (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

we should change our system than we don't need to depend on pirlo-esque players. Nasri, diego, vandervaart, sneijder, kroos are all excellent choices but will cost over 25mil.

^^^

Then we'd still need a box-to-box Gerrard like player. And they're as much in demand as Pirlo or Kaka.
