Now, before you say that he scored 19 goals for us last season (in all competitions), I want you to look back and see when he scored, against which teams and how often. Most of his goals were NOT match winners and were scored against small teams. He never scored consistently and he scored 0 goals in 10 Champions League games he played. His last goal was against Cagilari last season, 18th of Febuary. Which means he has not found the net for 7 straight months for Milan (yeah, I know about off season). Not even in friendly matches. Yet, he has had SO MANY chances to break his duck, but he has wasted them ALL! I always had faith in him, but as much as I hate to say it( (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ) now I realize that he really isn't a Milan class player. I had high hopes for him, but he did not live up to them. Even if he starts scoring again, it is not going to change the fact that he has made Milan pay for having faith in him.

I know what some of you are gonna say in counter arguement, so I give my answer now:

1) He doesn't get that many chances:

a. If a striker like Inzaghi gets 10+ chances per game every time he plays and Gila only gets 2, it means Gila is not as good a striker. b. Seriously, how many chances a world class striker needs to score? Not many. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

2. Gila can't play with Pippo/ Boriello/ Kaka etc.. etc...

That simply means he is NOT good enough. A world class striker scores at least once in a while, even in the worst of situations.

3. He has bad luck:

I agree, sometimes. Inzaghi has bad luck too! So does every other striker. But what makes the difference between them and Gila is that they will finally get that goal somehow. Perfect example = our very own Inzaghi.

4. He is a good team player.

Of course he is. I 120% agree with you. That's actually the only reason he is not being cussed at for the moment. But I know for a fact that me and many others have realized that he should not be in the starting line up anymore. As good of a team player he is, he is also a striker and he keeps missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and missing and....

5. He is too young:

24 is not too young. Plus, I don't see any signs of progress in his game. He is only going downhill.

What I think we should do? Keep him as our 3rd striker until Jan and then make him our 4th striker, get rid of Boriello and buy a new striker with some spice in his game!

Good post pKillerMax

I have a feeling that his time will come soon.
We had high expectation for him. As for now he is ,I think, failed to live up to them.

Nice post ..

But lets sit back and see how he does till midseason before jumping to conclusions (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

The season just got off to a start .. Though I agree with u in all aspects of this topic, it's premature for us not to give him a final chance to prove himself to us ..

Milan's attack isn't as leathal as it was, that is obvious .. But that is not down to Gilardino, but to the fact that we don't have Shevchenko !! It was bound to happen .. Anyways this is just temporary

It's all to do with confidence IMO. As soon as he breaks his duck in the CL I can see him scoring regularly for Milan (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devilsmiley.gif)

Just remember the saying 'Form is temporary, class is permanent' (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

No way ... I know strikers are meant to score goals but IMO Gilardino has been very good so far; Last year he was, after Kaka, our most consistent player. He sacrifices a lot of his game for the good of the team and it's obvious we find it much harder not only to score but even create chances without him .... ahem ... Livorno/Ascoli anyone ??? Just look at our game flow last night ...

Good point...
To 1:
Yes he doesn't get many chances because he doesn't work enough...

2. Yes, but that's not the problem. He should play with Oliveira

3. I wouldn't talk about bad luck in this case. A player has bad luck for one or two times, not for such a long period. That's not bad luck, he's just bad...

4. Well yeah, but sometimes he's too nice...

5. Too young? Hell no! He's 24! Other players that are younger than him CAN score against big teams...

I agree with almost everything here. He's not the Gilardino of Parma we all knew. He has changed. He's not so deadly in front of the goal anymore, he's clumsy and slow. Not to mention a striker 10 years older than him, that is Pippo, scores more than him. He hasn't yet found the way of goal this season yet, and that is very disturbing. Let's wait and see what's he gonna do until December before jumping to conclusions. Though I doubt his desperate situatuoin wil change.

yeah the Gilardino of Parma was so dangerous, he used to score from outside the box, did some overhead icks, his movement in the box was great ... and now all those things have changed because Milan depended on Sheva to score and Parma depended on Gila ... that's why atm Sheva and Gila are not scoring goals bcoz they are not the strikers that their current clubs rely on

I think he saves the violin celebration for when he'll score in the CL ... so it's highly likely we'll never experience it !! (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

he will come good for sure. the gila of parma carried the team on his own with sheva now gone he will again step up to the task as main goalscorer you see. i don't accept the bit about being less mobile i think he does a lot of work closing down defenders, dropping a little deeper to pick the ball up. his role has changed this season, last season he could stay in and around the 18yd box because sheva came deep, went out wide moving the defence about now gila has that role if pippo is playing because he is an out and out striker. not a very clever player but a great goal scorer so gila is left to do the moving around trying to work the defence. so i believe once he has settled into this new role he will be firing in the goals!! have faith my friends all will come good (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Not 100% but 10000000000% I agree with this article and just want to say you GOOD JOB men.
it REALLY makes me sad when I think about him, when I think about how much we and everybody at Milanello expected from him. But except the match against Livorno last season when he scored the double, actualy he has never been decisive!
He hit the bar against Barca and this hearts much more.
But OK I'm not looking to far, take for example the match against Lille on Tuesday, HE HAD chances, if he was better at finishing he would have scored but NO defenitevly he is not the Gila of Parma who scored goals from every possible position and in every possible way.
Furthermore, I agree with the saying 'Form is temporary, class is permanent' but although time ago I thought he has quality, now even that I dont want to admit it, he is not showing even the smallest sign of quality.
I wouldn't like anything more than Gila in his best days, coz to be honest I like him more than any other striker that we have.

Just because you stated an oppinion that doesn't mean that it is fact, ragardless of the points you made, I for one don't agree with them, and I'm also guessing that dst is with me on this one.

No, I stated my opinion along with several facts. Did you even read the whole thing?

QUOTE
You are just basing this on this year????? He only played in 1 whole match in serie A (part of the Lazio match and not even a whole 45 minutes in the Parma match because of his head injury) and in 1 CL match, so no his SHORT appearences this season don't prove anything.

I'm basing this from what I have seen so far from Gilardino in a Milan shirt. He didn't play in enough games? He played in both preliminary games and also frinedly games and 3 serie A games along with two CL league games.

QUOTE
In the CL match he only got 2 good chances, one shaved the post and the other from the Janku cross came in really fast and he wasn't able to get their fast enough.

please don't give me that 'he only got 1 or 2 chances which he nearly scored or couldn't get to' crap... That's when you know you are trying to come up with an excuse..

QUOTE
Just want to add, what do you people care about how much money was spent on him, it isn't like it came out of your pockets. Believe me 17mil to SilVio is not much.

I don't care about his price.

QUOTE
I'm glad they renewed his contract, to show him that the club have faith in him, something he isn't getting from most of the fans, this will boost his confidence, which is the only thing holding him back I think

Oh trust me, all the fans like him and have faith in him. What do you call support and vote of confidece? They are not booing him... In fact every time he leaves the pitch, there is a round of applause for him. Because he is a hard worker and a very likable person/ player. But that doesn't mean people are not worried about him. Plus, Milan always have faith in their players. That's how they bring out the best in them. So far Milan have shown Gila nothing but faith.

Suggesting he has bad luck is a fact ???? (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

If you wanna talk about facts then how about Milan offering him a new contract ??? IMO it's a lame excuse to say that they did so because "they always have faith in their players" !! ... Faith is not enough for a new contract; or wasn't Nesta someone to have faith in all this time ??? Still his contract keeps him in Milan until 2008 ....

Lest we forget that sh*tchenko had a bad third(I think) season, in fact a lot of peple were saying that his time was up, yet he came back and was scoring regularly again. Gila's problem IMO is confidence and, hopefully, by being offered the new contract shows him that Milan have faith in him and can kick start his form. He is capable of scoring goals and we all know that, he just needs that little bit of confidence.

I'm getting tired of your silly responses... Stop being such a smart@ss.. No, that's not a fact. Him not scoring for Milan since the 18th of Feb is a fact. Him not scoring a single goal in over 13 CL games is a fact. Those are facts, worrying facts to say the least. He has to start making his impact by scoring important goals and rising up to the challange.

Yes I read the whole thing, and yes SOME of the points you made are facts, like him not scoring for Milan, but the other points are just your oppinion and again, that doesn't mean that they are fact, you have your oppinion about Gila, I have mine, and I'm sorry you can write all the paragraphs you want about him not scoring, but I'm not changing my mind about him

So, are you telling me that you didn't like see him going through his purple patch, when he nearly scored all his 17 goals in those few months?? It's normal for form to slip, and yes it's been longer then usual, and if you read Carlo's comments in yesterday's press conference he said that even Gila is worried about it, but his problem is him trying too hard to get that break-through goal again

QUOTE (pKillerMax @ Sep 30 2006, 05:58 PM)

I am not trying to come up with any excuses, it is a fact that he wasn't getting good service in that match, Gila is a box striker, the xmas tree formation should only be used if a player like Oliveira is going to play, someone who starts his plays from outside the box. All Gila had to rely on with that formation was crosses coming in from the flanks.

QUOTE (pKillerMax @ Sep 30 2006, 05:58 PM)

I wasn't referring to you when I said this, some people here have been saying that he isn't worth the money and that it could have been spent better, so I just had to say that

Yeah, that's it guys turn against your own players... at the end of the day we have not found a replacement for Sheva we spent it on some other attacker who is really not proven, at the end of the day it was bad management not getting us a calibre of attacker this club deserves, Crespo, Ibrahimovic they all moved, did we look into it did we ****.

To have a go at our own players is just dumb.

Nobody is turning against no one. This is about how Gilardino has done ever since he joined Milan. It's called discussion. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

GILARDINO ISN'T A FLOP !!!

He's a great player, and YES, I know, he hasn't scored lateley... but the question is why ? I like him a lot, he's a great person and a great player, and I really believe in him, so I've asked myself "but why hasn't he scored yet ? He is completly unlucky or what ? ". I think I've found the answer last tuesday, after having watched the match vs Lilles : I think the problem isn't Gilardino himself, but his role in the team (and that's also true when he plays with the national team).

Think about the match vs Lille : so Gila was alone in front, supported by Seedorf and Kaka. What is a forward supposed to do when he plays in this position ? Take the ball given by his companions (so Kaka and Seedorf in that case) and score, of course. And if the ball doesn't come to him, he must try to go and get it.
Ok, so now think about what Gila did :

First, he stayed in front, and waited for his companions (as most of the forwards often do, like Pippo or Luca Toni for example) to bring him the ball ... but the problem was that NO ball reached the front, all were lost (by Seedorf, Kaka, cafu...) between the middle and the front of the field. And what did Kaka or Seedorf did when they had the ball in that part of the field ? They gave the ball backwards, to Pirlo or Gattuso, instead of giving him to Gila, who was WELL POSITIONNED !!

So what Gila did when he understood that nobody would give him the ball ? He went to get it in the middle of the field... and manage to bring the ball to the front of the field (contrary to other players, who lost it on the way) but then, what can he do ? He has only 2 options left :

1. He keeps the ball, and finally gives it to another player, who then can easily SCORE (and that's what happened when Seedorf scored...)....and becames the hero of the match, while Gila is criticized for not having scored again...

2. He gives the ball to another player, then run forwards, hoping the player he gave the ball to will give him the ball, offering him a chance to score... but what happened when Gila did that during the match vs Lille ? When he gave the ball to Kaka or Seedorf, they didn't give him the ball then (even if he was ONCE AGAIN WELL POSITIONED !!), but they played backwards, with Pirlo or Gattuso for example...

So during this match, Gilardino tried everything he could do, he played well but the problem is the other players didn't play WITH him !!! Kaka and Seedorf especially, who played as if Gila wasn't there !!!

When he plays (with Milan or the national team), Gila doesn't hesitate to sacrify himself, giving the ball to others if he thinks they are better positioned than him to score, but the other players don't do the same with him... they keep the ball for themselves (that's what happens when Gilardino plays with a great forward, like Pippo or Luca Toni : he always stays in their shadow in a way) or they give it to another player (like Kaka and Seedorf did during the match against Lilles...as if they didn't trust Gila in a way).... That's the reason why Gila gets so few occasions to score... if you think about it, his best occasions are a corner or a free kick (and when you think about it, that's how he scored vs Germany during the World Cup or vs France during the euro qualifications....)

So the problem isn't Gila himslef, but the way he plays with others.... he sacrifies himself for the team, but the other players don't do the same with him....
Maybe it's because he's too kind, I don't know, or because he's not as willing to score HIMSELF as forwards usually are (think of Pippo or Luca Toni for example).... but that's definitly a problem... He won't manage to score often if things remain like that...

So I think it's completly UNFAIR to criticize him like that, to say he's "a flop" , because the problem isn't Gila himslef, but the way he plays with other players (and the way other players play with him...) and because even if he doesn't score, he still plays a very important role in the team.

And I think it's also unfair to criticize him for the occasions he missed, because he's not the only one to miss great occasions, it happens to everybody (yes, even to Pippo, Luca Toni, Roberto Baggio, Totti...it happens to all the great strikers), the problem is just that Gila gets less occasions than other forwards, so if he miss one occasion, he doesn't usually get other occasions to score in a match, contrary to other forwards...

Gilardino is a great player, I believe in him, I'm sure he's going to score great goals again soon, he just needs more time than other forwars, because other forwards don't sacrify themselves as he does for their team...

FORZA GILA !!!!!!! (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devilsmiley.gif)

Milangilafan Respect .. I'm glade thatyou are so positive (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

As you can see, or read, some of us here have lost faith .. But I'm glade you still have this enthusiasim about Gilardino (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

If I was to comment on one thing, it would be look at how Gilardino positions himself and compare it to Inzaghi's positioning; I;m sure he is a great contribution to the team as a whole, but on his personal level, he has to open up for Kaka and Seedorf to pass to him .. Even the Lille match .. Check out his positioning, I think that is his only flaw, thus dubbing him unable to score, IMO. I don't think anyone can be compared to Pippo when it come to positioning or as I like to call it, being in the right place at the right time. Notice some of the games Pippo plays, when it's a cross coming in he is the one that is always in the good position to head it in, ok so that's good positioning from him, but also notice how even when the ball deflects into an unpredectible place near the box, the ball always somehow falls to him. I don't know how he didn't manage to score in these last few games, he was getting in good positions and was only denied by some miracle saves from Manninger and Amelia in the Livorno match

@ han ..

No we cant compare them (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

But Pippo is our lucky charm .. but at the age of 33 I cant expect a lot from him anymore (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Still, he is always at the right place at the right time.

As long as he manages to stay injury free, I think he still has it in him to do better then most players half his age.

But as all of you here might have noticed I have faith in Gila, and I think once he gets over his issues (whatever they are) he will get back to his best, ie. back in his Parma form

Well Cryuff has praised Pippo, and we all know about how hard it is to get Cryuff to like a Milan player...oh man...I read about the 'Toro, toro!' match and it was like I can picture it...4-0 ha!!! But yeah position wise Pippo is the best in the business, in Solskjaer u can see a bit of an imitation....

Gila like I said..I really don't mind what Carlo is doing at the moment. Look Gila is 24, we know he can poach, and looks to me like Carlo is giving him the crash course in trequartista basics...I love the idea of Gila becoming to Milan what Del P was to Juve at his best. He's probably the best age to be trained for that role...and I'm guessing that's what Milan has in mind....he does have long range abilities shot-wise,u know, can dribble quite well, is a very intelligent passer, SELFLESS and all-round nice guy. Hell LaPalma likes him and we all know how he feels about the Italy WC squad (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Well, at the end of this season, we will know exactly if he is gonna be a complete flop, or actually man up and show us all what he is capable of doing. It's make or break.

Gila is a good payer but doesn't fit our system IMO. He struggles to play as a single striker and can't play with Pippo as they're too alike. Gila would thrive in a team that plays a 4-4-2 and gets crosses in, but that's not how we play. If he can adapt then I think he can do well, after all you don't score 23 goals in consecutive seasons and be a poor player. As well as adapting he needs more mental strength, there are too many times when he looks like a little boy lost instead of a "I'll get the next one" look (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I'd be ecstatic if he can step up and take the role as I believe he is good enough, but he has to show it!
