Thursday 12 October, 2006

Five members of Italy’s World Cup winning squad are included in the shortlist of 30 players who will compete for the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year title.

Fabio Cannavaro (pictured), Gianluigi Buffon, Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta and Andrea Pirlo are on the list, along with five Frenchman who starred in the World Cup Final in Berlin, those being Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Frank Ribery, Lilian Thuram and Patrick Vieira.

The name of Ronaldinho’s successor will be released on December 18 at the Zurich Opera House, during the 16th annual World Player Gala.

The list of candidates for the award was drawn up by football experts from different FIFA committees.

As in the last two years, the head coaches and captains of the national teams will now vote for the best player from the lists of candidates and FIFA will reveal the three names who received the most votes at the beginning of December.

The Gala will also include prizes for outstanding performances at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The tournament’s three best players (Zidane, Cannavaro and Pirlo) and top scorers (Miroslav Klose, Hernan Crespo and Ronaldo) will be presented with awards, as will the two fairest teams (Brazil and Spain) and the outstanding goalkeeper (Buffon).

The most represented club is Chelsea with six nominees, while Barcelona and Milan boast four players each.

Only Zidane and Ronaldinho among the candidates have already lifted the prestigious trophy in the past.

FIFA World Player of the Year shortlist: Adriano (Inter, Brazil), Michael Ballack (Chelsea, Germany), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid, Italy), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal), Petr Cech (Chelsea, Czech Republic), Deco (Barcelona, Portugal), Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast), Michael Essien (Chelsea, Ghana), Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona, Cameroon), Luis Figo (Inter, Portugal), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan, Italy), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England), Thierry Henry (Arsenal, France), Kaka (Milan, Brazil), Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen, Germany), Philippe Lahm (Bayern Munich, Germany), Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England), Jens Lehmann (Arsenal, Germany), Alessandro Nesta (Milan, Italy), Andrea Pirlo (Milan, Italy), Franck Ribery (Marseille, France), Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Argentina), Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, England), Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal, Czech Republic), Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea, Ukraine), Lilian Thuram (Barcelona, France), Patrick Vieira (Inter, France), Zinedine Zidane (retired, France)

As if he gives up cuz there is nothing to prove .. yea that is so true ; but TBH he turned it on for 90 minutes during the CL Final, even R10 couldnt do what he did (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Why not ?? Don't you agree that he drove Arsenal to the CL final (ok he blew it there but it was a big job already) and was playing great in the WC ?? I don't think he don't deserve it, it's just that Pirlo for example deserves it more !! I will be really upset if Zidane gets to win it !!

I think it will be between Henry ,Pirlo, Ronaldinho and Kaka. R10 will probably win it although I would give the big prize to Pirlo.

There's no way R10 could win it, he's had a terrible season so far, not to mention the WC. I would either give it to Pirlo or Kakà. My plan is to give the Golden Ball to Pirlo and the FIFA award to Ricky. That way everybody'll be happy. This list is a joke, the biggest joke of all is having Adriano on that, he practically never even got off the mark last season with Inter and was playing terrible, even in the WC, I really can't see any reason why he is on there.

The other laughable ones are

Essien: He had a mediocre season with Chelsea and an OK WC, another that doesn't deserve a spot on that list

Drogba: he might have started this season in great form, but he was pethetic last season for Chelsea, and an overall mediocre WC

Thomas Rosicky: he did sh!t when he played for his former club (I think it was German one, can't remeber the name though) because I had watched him a few time and he never impressed me, and from what I read he never really was anything special. He scores a great goal in the WC, an that suddenly merits a spot in this list??

Oh and last but not least, Zinedine Zidane: A retired player, that bowed out disgracefully, that had a sh!tty last season with Madrid and only 2 good games in the WC, and that merits a place in the list how exactly???

I've always said that FIFA are a joke and they continued to prove me right by this list
