Well, I'm not sure how correct this is, but Villa were interested in him and Villarreal were not exactly keen on selling him. If I remember correctly he had a buy-out clause of just under £15m (E21m = £14m) so it could be the case. Maybe Forlan was they guy they saw who could replace Torres' goal haul per season. So maybe he left Villarreal, who were unwilling to sell, with Athletico activating this clause? They probably wanted somebody proven in Spain, there aren't many others, especially with Kanoute commiting to Sevilla.
