Donadoni demands control
Roberto Donadoni gave a scathing reply to Michel Platini over the Francesco Totti saga and urged his men to take control in Lithuania.
A crucial Euro 2008 qualifier may be taking place in Kaunas tomorrow evening, but the Italy camp is dominated by discussion of Totti’s sabbatical from the Nazionale and possible return in September.
Today UEFA President Michel Platini weighed in on the row, assuring that if he were the Coach, Totti would not have been allowed to take this time off.
“Michel wants to be the Coach? I don’t think it’s compatible with his current position,†replied a sarcastic Donadoni.
Following that barbed statement, the tactician warned the media it would be his only concession on the subject. “I warn you in advance that if there are any questions unrelated to Lithuania, I will not respond.â€
He has more pressing concerns, as the Azzurri need a victory in Kaunas to maintain second place in Group B and wash away the worries of their slender 2-1 victory in the Faroe Islands.
“This is the classic match we have to take control of,†explained Donadoni. “Of course I expect my men to play with grit, but it is wise to ask them to approach the task with a sense of balance.
“We must push when we feel it should be done and suffer with intelligence when it is time to sustain pressure. This is the recipe for victory.â€
It is quite a turnaround from the Faroe Islands, when he told his squad to “play the opening 20 minutes like you’re out for blood.â€
His final training session left few indications for the watching media, other than reports there will be a 4-1-4-1 system with Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi together in midfield.
He mixed up the squads for a game between ranks. On the one hand were Amelia; Oddo, Barzagli, Materazzi, Tonetto; De Rossi; Quagliarella, Pirlo, Di Natale, Rocchi; Lucarelli.
On the other were Buffon; Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Gamberini, Pasqual; Diana; Gattuso, Ambrosini, Perrotta, Del Piero; Inzaghi.
Football ItaliaI agree with Donadoni .. Platini has to stay out of this. With Totti's form, Italy can sweep Lithuania out of their way (IMG:

EDIT: Ment to say this group, B I think .. Italy will have a better chance of keeping up with France, with Totti upfront
