Greek Police To Arrest Champions League Final?
There are storm clouds on the horizon in Greece after Greek police warned that they may well be holding industrial action that coincides with the Champions League final in Athens between Liverpool FC and AC Milan…

Antonis Botaitis, the Greek Police Officers' Federation general secretary explained that his men have grievances to be resolved.  "We have long-standing demands for salary improvements and [improved] working conditions and we have not received an answer."

"We have decided to stage a uniformed protest on the day of the Champions League final if there is no response. The time and the place would be decided at a later date", warned the official about the May 23rd match.

Theoretically the Greek constitution forbids police from striking, and Botaitis admitted the planned protest would probably not hamstring plans to field more than 15,000 officers in Athens on the day of the match.

The Greek authorities have been battling rising violence at stadiums and have called on foreign fans without tickets not to turn up in Athens looking for tickets. There are plans to keep rival fans apart and limit sales of alcohol.

Greek professional football was suspended for a fortnight after a death was the result of clashes between supporters of Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.  Greek officers are said to be working with their British and Italian counterparts to predict and defuse any potential problems.
