QUOTE (Portugal @ Dec 25 2006, 01:56 AM)
Do you really think we can win the CL this year? We may beat Celtic... even the 4th or 5th best team here in Portugal could, but then on the 1/4 finals... against Chelsea? FC Hype? Manscum? Inter? Real? We'd have no chance...

So this transfers for me... I think we shouldn't even think if "he can" or "not" play the CL. Simply, it doesn't matter.

The way Milan is, not even a "big-transfer" like Torres would change anything. We should think on 2007/08.
*

Porto, your living on another world .. If Carlo doesn't give Milan's managment the CL, the bench will be dusted for someone else next season .. Whether Milan kick him out or he resignes by himself; if in may there is no CL glory. He will walk.

By saying that we need at least three players eligable for CL ..

You don't think this team can make it, huh (IMG:http://www.coolsmileys.net/gestures/doh1.gif) ??

Well, not a tiered team like the one that just had to play prelimenaries and WC finals and all that .. Maybe a fine tuned Milan can make it to Athens this summer !

Why not we have the key elements of any winning team .. I wont go into a lengthy discussion about who is better than who, but let me tell you this, if Porto could do it in 2004 .. So could Milan (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devilsmiley.gif)

Cause they got Real Madrid, Juventus and Villareal, easy stuff. Look at us last season, we faced Bayern, Lyon and Barcelona. Just compare our opponents to the ones of Arsenal or even Porto in 2004. We definitely got the most difficult ones, and although we still made it to the semi-finals, and even deserved the final because of Sheva's disallowed goal. The team of this year doesn't have many differences from last season's. We may miss a goalscorer and leader in attack like Sheva, but still I think with confidence and a bit of luck we can make it to Athens.

Another world? No. The real one.

All I'm saying, and for long time... is that Milan doesn't need 1, 2 or 3 good and young players for some places. Milan need 5-6-7 quality players not only for the first 11 but for the bench too. Look at the entire squad and check their age. And that you don't do it in January-market no mather how much $$$ you have. You need 1-2 Summers to do.

Milan killed itself last Summer: Stam, Rui Costa and Shevchenko. 3 world class players with no decent replacement (until now).

Oh, and R7, I admire your optimism (about the CL) but pal, let's face the truth. We're going to be kicked out sooner or later. If we didn't make it last season (Markus Merk... never forgotten), we have no chance to make it this year.

Maybe in 2-3 years.

Carletto won't be fired that easily... Unless we end up without CL and lose to Celtic then, definitely. But here is how I see it. We will make it to 3rd place this year and will reach the semi-finals in the CL and next year we will win the league. I'm pretty sure next year we will have a really great team. Many younger players will join us. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

Why not ?!

Anything is possible .. Carlo has always taken us up into the final rounds of this competition ! And looking at how Milan has performed in the first half of the season, they will want a change .. They will go for this .. Maybe not this same team that played the first half of the season, but a modified team ...

2 or 3 players is all we need. More would just give us headache.

If you plan to dissolve a team, you don't do it in one setting, i.e. in the summer. It's a proccess, it takes time.

Arsenal for example, were SH!T in the EPL .. They were suffering w/o their captain Viera. During the winter transfer season, they bought 3 players eligable for CL .. Abadayor, Diaby, and Walcott .. Out of the three Diaby was being chanted as the 'new Viera' .. And where did ARsenal go ? I forgot (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

So, as I said b4, if porto could do it .. Why can't Milan (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devil.gif)

Great post.

Totally agree.

Getting a lot of players at once will definately not help, getting 2-3 players that are the RIGHT ones to fit in our team is the answer.

Oddo or another good fullback is a MUST, same goes for a forward and a CB or a DMF.

Looking back at our team during Carlo's reign especially the last 2 seasons we haven't always had a team that is on par with Chelsea's or Barca's or even Real's, we won the CL playing a narrow formation without any fullbacks, that should speak a lot.

In my eyes I think we even over achieved last season in the CL considering the age of our squad and the injuries we had to carry through all the way. And still we had to be knocked out by dodgy refereeing. And also looking at the team other big guns had to knock out on their way compared to us, we had Bayern, Lyon and Barca, not to mention one of the toughest groups of the competition and we did all this while cathcing up to Juve in the league.

Simply because that 2 or 3 quality players you won't get them on January. Well, ok... maybe there are 2 available: Oddo and Suazo. But knowning our directors... we're probably not going to buy "that quality" that surely we need.

I'm not expecting Milan doing "a Real Madrid" spending 30-40M/euros in January. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

You have a point there also, cause considering our recent track records those 2 signings will probably come out as being (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/puke.gif) Zebina and Iaquinta (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/puke.gif)

But IF those 3 QUALITY sigings were to arrive then I would say we have about as much a chance as anyone of going for the CL

And what have Madrid accomplished in the past 4 yrs .. With their extravaggant spending, that even Chelsea couldn't match ? (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Milan is a good team, with 2 or 3 more signings .. We could match, Barca, Chelsea, etc etc ...

Milan doesn't need to spend extravaggant sums of $$ .. Milan needs ONLY two or three players of quality now to compete .. These players, I don't know whom the club will select, but will be enough for us to mount a challenge for a CL spot and to reach Athenes.

Maybe I'm day dreaming; but we have the team .. Kaka, Pirlo, Gattuso, Nesta, Gilardino .. We have the KEY elements for a world class team .. Now we need to fill the gaps and we'll be ready to go again.

Nothing is impossible.

A change is inevitable .. Don't get me wrong, we have an ageing defence, an incompetent attack, and no subs for our midfield .. But that needs time to fix .. This January is a start w/ three more players to help aid in this season's objectives .. Then next summer, four or five new players .. And life goes on (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

But you got it right.

The thing I'd say, you and many people are dreaming is about "that 2-3 quality players" we need.

For the quality we need... I'd say we should spend between 25-40M in those 3 players. And we're not gonna spend that this January. That's why I'm saying "think ahead, think about next season".

No not this summer ... I am not saying let's sign C Ronaldo (not a big fan), Rooney, Drogba, Cole, and while we'r at it, Gerrard ...

What I'm saying is we have a good team and need a couple of signings to complement this team .. Next summer we could go for BIG spending .. But now, all we need is a couple to satisfy our goals this season, players who are effective and are eligable for CL.

I dont mean to insult ur intelligence porto .. So I don't want to repeat myself again and again .. I do agree that the board need to rebuild this team, but for now, there is potential in the team, so with a couple of signings we will be able to compete for THIS season .. Come next season, the board will have enough time to rebuild during the summer (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/king.gif)
