MORE MISERY FOR MILAN

Nicola Ventola's second-half goal inspired Atalanta to victory and piled more domestic misery on AC Milan.

The Rossoneri have struggled all season in Serie A and that continued on Sunday although they were hardly helped by having to play the final 15 minutes with 10 men following an injury to Gennaro Gattuso.

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti had made all his substitutions prior to Gattuso having to leave the pitch and it cost the visitors dearly as substitute Andrea Soncin killed the game off a minute from time.

The result in Bergamo means Milan are 17 points behind Serie A leaders Internazionale and Palermo after 10 games played.

The visitors, who moved to within a point of earning a place in the second round of the Champions League with a 4-1 victory over Anderlecht in midweek, controlled the opening minutes and could have taken the lead with 12 minutes played, Yoann Gourcuff's 30-yard drive firing just over the bar.

Atalanta replied with Massimo Donati trying his luck from long range and forcing goalkeeper Dida to make a desperate clearance.

Midway through the first-half, Milan were unlucky not to break the deadlock with Claudio Rivalta forced to make a goalline clearance after Alberto Gilardino had fired in a shot.

On the half-hour mark, Ventola's volley went wide as the hosts upped the tempo.

Filippo Inzaghi should have put his team ahead with 39 minutes played after clever play by Kaka served the striker inside the box but his first touch went wide.

Gilardino's flying header from inside the six-yard box then went wide in what was the last chance of the opening half.

Milan continued to attack after the re-start but it was Atalanta who broke the deadlock in the 50th minute.

Ventola's left-footed volley towards the near post stunned Dida to bring the Atleti Azzurri D'Italia Stadium to life.

The Rossoneri would have equalised three minutes later had home keeper Alex Calderoni not acrobatically palmed Andrea Pirlo's free-kick over the bar.

Shortly after, Gourcuff was booked for diving inside the area when his marker clearly touched the ball and not the striker.

Atalanta were quite happy to sit on their lead and hit Milan on the counter-attack.

Gattuso's injury hindered the Rossoneri who lacked ideas and could have conceded their second in the 70th minute.

Donati's right-footed effort from Fernando Tissone's assist went wide, much to Dida's relief.

Kaka twice had the opportunity to level the score but his attempts from close-range were saved by Calderoni.

Soncin made no mistake at the other end as his left-footed strike from inside the box towards the top left-hand corner beat Dida to kill the contest.

Stefano Colantuono's joy was understandable as his team have maintained their unbeaten run at home and also climbed to fourth position in the standings.

i think this could be a blessing in disguise. look i love gattuso and what he does, but he is a one dimensional, he is terrible at attacking but he does the running around thing perfectly and is good at defending when defenders go forward on set pieces, etc. but lately he hasnt been good at much. maybe if it's long term this will force milan to get sumone new in the midfield which i think is just as important as getting new forwards and defenders. i mean many are saying it's cuz of the world cup but look at teams like man u, chelsea, barcelona, inter... they all have plenty of guys who got far at the world cup and they are doing great. what gattuso and pirlo played 2 or 3 more games than some and suddenly they have the excuse to be tired and ineffective every game. Pirlo got a rest before this one, and has had a few rests this season and he hasnt done anything. and no i dont know for how long but i'll check later. i hope it's for a while so it forces us to shake things up and hopefully he'll be back for the knockout round of CL after the winter break.

This is why carlo has to go. look what he said "There have been too many negative things over these last ten days. Another penalty wasn't given which could have changed the game at 0-0. I believe in this system, we have to have faith and hope. We have to get up the table. Is the problem to do with the head or legs? The referees." again blamming the loss on refs fault. the refs sucked but so did milan and it's as simple as that. that is a childs attitude. notice how every time we lose we are their unlucky or it's the refs. yess those are factors in those losses, but what he is pretty much saying is that in order to win we need to be lucky and ref decisions our way. bad ref calls are nothign new in football, they happen every game and yet we were able to win games before. even with a lil luck and ref decisions in our favor we probably would have lost or at best tied.

the scandal put a road block in us getting any good players last year. i think that if we had not been involved in the scandal than at least 90% of all the players that left juve would have come to milan instead.

besides that...i think i'm only going to watch CL matches from now on  (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

After what happened Juve would never deal with us, they'd rather lose money selling players to other clubs than sell to us. Zambro said his dream move was to Milan but he went to Barca for peanuts because Juve didn't want to deal with us.

thanks dst for explaining what a forum is because i didn't have a clue!!
my point about the singing mastermind was even tho the team was losing the fans were still backing the team and i was just saying to those who were going down the "season over, sack carlo blah blah blah" route that perhaps a little more constructive criticism may by be a pleasent change.
everytime we lose it's the same old thing yes i agree we were poor today and the team does need freshening up but we couldn't try and buy players in the summer with the threat of relegation hanging over us after all who'd join?
as mentioned earlier things are different in italy the coach doesn't have the influence as in other countries over transfers so carlo can only work with what he's given hopefully it will be a better squad next season as silvio must realise the the squad needs abit of an overhaul but it's HIS club and HIS money.
but given what he has done for us in the last 20 years i can't see him not doing the required work to his beloved club. until then i will just accept this season as not a vintage year and keep willing on my team in every game and hope those in charge can turn this situation round and we can start to win some games and put as in a better position (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devil.gif)

I think we all feel the same way. If we stuck to close to it we wouldn't have anything to say in the forum but the same post ever day.

The main frustration is that if you go back to posts a year ago people where commenting on the same thing as you are. We need to go into the transfer window and freshen up our defense, we have faith.

Its true and makes an interesting insight when you analyze Milan's position to get players.

The first difficulty is yes these other Italian teams don't want to give Milan players out of the competitive spirit.

The second is that world class players want to go to the best teams and Milan are suffering. If you were a player on a top team, you want to move to a top team. Apart of the top team is their place in the countries standing and their position to win and go to Europe.

The tough thing is that we are 17 points out of first now and theres a possibility of not making Europe.

We keep saying REBUILD!! REBUILD!!!! But we might find ourselves in a weak position in these upcoming transfer windows.
