Actually this here is the true friend. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) The 2002 historical rates at the URL below. Now if we go in at the average for the month of August 2002 (I reckon this is when the Nesta deal was finalized), the figure is €1 = £0.636341. Which translates to £20m = €31.429m. So yeah, it's slightly higher than the 30 figure that is thrown around. Here is the link:

Monthly Exchange Rate Average (British Pound, Euro) 2002

Ah, that makes sense. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Emerson is the highest transfer ever... I mean, what was Galliani on when he was signing?

Nice. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) That was actually Carlo's favored deal, Galliani would probably never have bought him. The Puma was out of air by that time, and Carlo still thought of him as being the same player he was in his Roma and Juventus days.

Ah, that makes sense.

Yeah, so we're both proven wrong. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Nesta's a million extra. By the same logic Rui Costa came in at even higher if we are to believe the £ amounts. Anyway, if we factor in the rates at that time and the inflation of today, I doubt we'll be seeing such numbers again in the near future. The figure record may break, but I feel gone are the days of such lavish spending here at Milan.

Unless of course, EPL goes down, and Serie A becomes a highly commercial and over-priced league.

But I said Nesta cost us €31m, and I was right. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Fair enough. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) I read the figures €30 and €35 million thrown around in various articles at that time, so that is what was in my head. By the way Rui Costa's accurate fee is £28m in 2001 rates. Boy, was that guy worth it.

The response on here after a ridiculous amount of pages on the transfer thread (for that period, talking about all sorts of names) after we announced that signing... priceless.

Yeah, I recall that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) I think we even got a whole lot from the CL win that time and almost all Milan fans were quite pumped up that the management will be buying a few good players to strengthen the squad. The complete opposite happened. Frankly, I'd have taken Brocchi over Emerson at that time, the Brazilian was finito by that time.

Yes...Carlo requested Emerson 3 years before he arrived...and they got him Brocchi.

In fact at that time he wanted Zlatan and Diarra. They got back Borriello...and Emerson. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Ridiculous signing.

But don't get me started on Brocchi. How pi$$ed I was at him for losing the ball at OT when Rooney scored in the last minute, urgh.

Disclaimer: I really used to dislike Brocchi (and how he and Emerson played ahead of Gourcuff almost all the time), but I saw a Brocchi interview on TV where he said some tremendous things about Ronaldo (R99) and his time here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) How good and talented of a player the player was and how Ronaldo's goals helped us in the league that time. Well Paolo also said the same I remember.

So my dislike for the guy went down ten points to 90%. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Still the only lasting memory I have of Brocchi is how he lost the ball at OT and Rooney scored the third goal after getting past Nesta. That was pretty bad, yeah.

if milan needs a revolution the first thing they should do is kick seedorf out, bench Ambro and Gattuso, get rid of flamini (i thought this guy would be great, but after seeing the performance against spurs, i dont think he is getting better) and for the love of god buy a world class playmaker!!!

we should have bought VDV when he went to spurs. what a waste

We could always get him in the summer should they fail to qualify for the CL. I can't imagine a player of his quality wanting to miss out on playing CL football, especially when the club he plays for isn't exactly favourites to make the top 4 every year.

I don't rate VDV ... But nevertheless, he would do great as a rotation player

^^ Maybe in Barcelona or something, but in Milan he'd be a definite starter.

Yeah VDV would be in our midfield. Top quality player. Remember Madrid got rid of Sneijder as well, so it wasn't just VDV who apparently wasn't upto it!
