Yes, Toni is in superb form right now and he should spearhead the Azzurri attack in June, but I'm still glad that we signed Gilardino ahead of Toni. Alberto is five years younger than Toni, and could be playing for the Rossoneri for the next ten years. Vieri and Inzaghi are ageing, but I'd say we can manage fairly well with the strikers we have until 2007, when new blood is required. Who would that be, I don't know. Two years is a long time in football, and new names will be introduced. Remind you, two years ago Luca Toni was just beginning his 30-goal-season with Palermo in Serie B, and surely no transfer to Milan was on the cards. The same could be said about Gilardino. |

Here are the best young defenders in the Serie A, I'd welcome the signing of any of these players: (IMG: http://uffa.mainardi.net/risorse/giocatori/b/bonerad.jpg) Daniele Bonera, Parma, Centre-back / Right-back (IMG: http://uffa.mainardi.net/risorse/giocatori/b/barzaglia.jpg) Andrea Barzagli, Palermo, Centre-back (IMG: http://uffa.mainardi.net/risorse/giocatori/z/zaccardoc.jpg) Christian Zaccardo, Palermo, Right-back (IMG: http://uffa.mainardi.net/risorse/giocatori/f/feliped.jpg) Felipe, Udinese, Centre-back (IMG: http://uffa.mainardi.net/risorse/giocatori/c/chivuc.jpg) Christian Chivu, Roma, Centre-back The list would have included Giorgio Chiellini, but since he plays for Juve it wouldn't be easy to acquire him. Massimo Oddo of Lazio and Lecce's Marco Cassetti were not included as they are too old to solve any problems in the long run. |

Obviously the reputation of Coppa Italia is miserable and the big teams always field second-string sides. As M1ke said, something needs to be done.
A place for Champions League would be a hell of a motivator but I think the right to represent your country in our continent's most prestigious competition should be deserved by success in the domestic league. This, I believe, reads in UEFA's rules as well.
But what is certain is that the two-legged ties suck. Maybe it's a tradition but let's get rid of it. The less there are games, the more meaningful they are, and it would improve the little clubs' surprise chances as well. The format of the Coppa is also too easy for the big sides, as they can start from the last 16.
So here's my version of Coppa Italia: - The top sides (Serie A) would start at last 64 (more David vs. Goliath -ties) - All the ties, including the final, would consist of a single leg only - The prize would be a UEFA Cup qualification
Note that the burden of top clubs would not be increased since the removal of the other leg compensates for the two extra rounds. |
