Milan Admit Zambrotta Approach
Gianluca Zambrotta's future at Barcelona has been cast in further doubt, as Milan have for the first time confirmed that they are actively pursuing the top-rated Azzurri wing-back.
The 30-year-old has been a fixed feature of the Spanish and Italian sports papers in recent months, with always more stories emerging linking him to a return to Italy.
With the latest statement by Milan's chief officer Adriano Galliani the chances of the rumours turning into reality have significantly heightened, though it is now more likely to be in June as opposed to January.
"Last week at the Uefa meeting I officially told Barcelona officials of Milan's interest in Zambrotta," Galliani revealed.
"Barca president Joan Laporta told me we will speak again in a couple of month, but from now until June he'll remain at Barcelona."
Zambrotta joined Barcelona after a fantastic World Cup-winning campaign with Italy in the summer of 2006, but not unlike fellow countryman Fabio Cannavaro at Real Madrid, the he has never truly seemed to settle in Spain.
The ex-Juve star has had his moments, but not with the same level of consistency that had made him such a revered professional in recent years and many put this down to personal problems stemming from homesickness.
Milan have long been held as potential suitors for the Italian international in their search for a replacement for their iconic captain Paolo Maldini, who set to retire this summer following a glittering career.
