I can't believe nobody opened this thread...

Well, I'll start. Something about the 3rd best italian team atm.

Roma bought Vucinic, usually a solid team. If they want to do something they can't put Totti alone upfront. He's a playmaker. Not an striker. (For me, that was their problem on Supercoppa... Totti wasn't even 100%... playing only in 50 metres of the field... not attacking... inviting Inter's comeback... etc)

It'll be interesting to see Totti + Vucinic.

If they get no injuries this year (last year was really bad for them), they can do good things.

So. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS YEAR'S LEAGUE?
X-Offender
Milan wins, lock the topic. tongue.gif

Just kidding. I think Roma have a very strong team, especially cause they got De Rossi and Mancini, amazing players IMO. They have two strong CB like Chivu and Mexes and a great star like Totti. When he'll get back to shape, Roma will have a very strong attack.

Then there's Inter. They definitely have a stronger team than last season's. But the fact is, Inter have always had a stronger team than the precedent season's and they always finish third, so I'm not very concerned about them.

I guess the war for title will be held between these two teams and of course, Milan.

Roma is more consistent (not getting stupid results week yes/week no) than Inter. And, playing like a team, not their individualities like Inter, can make Roma strong. I'm a little bit worried about them too.

Look at, for example, this Xmas tree:

Doni | Panucci, Mexes, Chivu, Martinez | De Rossi, Pizarro, Perrotta | Mancini, Totti | Vucinic (a Roma fan told me this line up yesterday).

With people like Aquillani and Montella benched.

A strong team, without a doubt.

Sure, it the best team they had in years, but I'm a bit concerned about Totti. I'm not convinced he has fully recovered from his injury. He surely wasn't the real Totti during the WC...

Yes. Francesco, at the moment, is not "Totti". It's only Francesco. rolleyes.gif

He's playing what? 30% he knows... hope he recover. A player like that should always be 100%.

Well..... It is gna be an interesting year in the Italian league especially after this summers calciopol scandal.... tongue.gif whateva...rubbish..

Roma
I'm wit u on Vucinic, gd buy strong player and Roma needed an attacker....Should link up well and score some goals.

Inter
All I cay say is Forza Crespo hes the man. I hope he doesn't score on us in the derbies. But They are gna be on fire this season.

Juve
They dont deserve any web time.........

Sampdoria
I like this team they're a good solid outfit with stylish players....but they sold tonneto(this dude score a goal on us at the ferraristaduim last year). and if flachi is still there then they should do well at least maybe uefa spot.

Milan!!! devil.gif
This is our year to capture the seria A and make some more history in the championsLeague. We should ao far and I think only bad luck or a misjudgment will cost us the trophy like last year.

As for the rest we will see them in action against milan devilsmiley.gif

Viola. Do not forget Fiorentina.

They start with -19, but they'll be on fire with Luca Toni and Mutu upfront. I hope they get a good start in Serie A. rolleyes.gif

With Vucinic they grew stronger ... even if they keep saying the are not ready to fight for the title I think they're strong opponents, stronger for us than Inter because they have the mentality too!!!

Well, there you answered yourself. Toni shouldn't have settled. He should have done whatever he could to terminate the contract and leave the Viola. He doen't deserve this punishment. I'm really glad he didn't join Inter, but I would have been very happy if he joined Roma.

Good topic Portugal ..

About the league .. I think a lot of teams are aming for at least 3rd place, since Juve is out of the picture. I think everygame will be played with full potential by teams such as; Palermo, Livorno, Parma Chievo etc. ...

I know what ur thinking, that what kind of game will these guys play to even reach 3rd place !!!! And I say, it's there GOLDEN oppertunity to get the results, they know there opponents well .. And without Juve they know they have +6 points in their pockets from the start (hypothetically).

Us, Roma, Inter, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Reggina will go for our goals .. Let that be reducing the defficite, aiming for 1st place, or/and qualifying from the group stages .. But by mid-season, we will be worn out .. That's when these teams will really show their credability.

I think it will be a very interesting yr for Serie A, the yr w/o Juve ohmy.gif tongue.gif

Juve gave him up because they are a Serie B club at the moment .. Just think of our situation had we been relegated; suddenly Kaka, Pirlo, etc .. want to leave .. Same situation ..

Toni is different .. He's still in Serie A, he backs off on them now (w/ point deduction), he knows he'll be criticized and hated by many.

Van Bommel... maybe a good player in Holland. In Spain... always diving and trying to injure the opponents. He's b/s as a person.

I remember the Barça-Real from last year, when he dived and got the penalty (obviously...).

In the end the media was asking him if he had a pool at home. laugh.gif

I think every country in the last WC was accused of diving, which isn't false, Italy for example have Del Piero, he falls from the smallest of touches when I saw him doing it to Inter in the Tim cup I had to laugh but when he kept constantly doing it when playing against us I got really annoyed because of all the stoppages

Anyway, back on topic, I really think that we have a good chance this year and I know everyone has been hyping up Inter because they made 3 signings but as some have already said I'm more afraid of Roma, they might be playing their chances down saying that us and Inter are better but they have a great chance this season to win it as well, because just like us they play as a TEAM not like a bunch of headless chickens running around trying to do everything on their own. Plus if Totti get's 100% fit again we better watch out.

Serie A: 2006-07 at a glance

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new Serie A season is on the horizon. Football Italia rounds up what each team is aiming for and what they can realistically expect to achieve

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ascoli
Surprised everyone by easing into mid-table last term. Without the element of surprise or gifted tactician Marco Giampaolo, the Bianconeri may have to fight to the bitter end to ensure another survival.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: Lack of goals will prove fatal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atalanta
Have become a yo-yo club in recent seasons but will be determined to cement their Serie A status and prove that they belong amongst the elite. Buoyed by the signatures of Christian Vieri, Nelson Abeijon and Cristiano Doni, the Nerazzurri are ready for a dogfight.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: Will just have enough to stay afloat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cagliari
Languished in the relegation zone for long periods of last season but found form after Christmas. Received a boost this summer when 22-goal striker David Suazo committed to the club, and will now look to ease their way up the table past sides with less top-flight experience.

Aim: Mid-table
Prediction: Mid-table comfort beckons

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Catania
The Sicilian minnows return to Serie A after over 20 years in the wilderness. The Elefanti have only made modest changes to the squad that secured second place in Serie B and have it all to do to prevent a quick return to the second tier.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: Will put up a brave fight but their return to A will be short-lived

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chievo
The unfashionable Veronese outfit have a reputation for overachievement and were at it again last term, clinching a Champions League spot after the Calciopoli verdict. However, the Flying Donkeys fell at the first hurdle in Europe and may come crashing back to earth this time around as they will struggle to score without Amauri or the banned Victor Obinna.

Aim: Mid-table
Prediction: A hard season spent in the bottom half

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Empoli
The Azzurri unexpectedly survived comfortably last term and nearly grabbed a UEFA Cup spot after the Calciopoli scandal. However, the Tuscan minnows will have modest expectations once more this term having sold star striker Francesco Tavano.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: A nervy season near the drop zone, but last term’s experience will give them the edge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fiorentina
The Viola returned to the big time last season and were set for a Champions League campaign before the Calciopoli charges hit. They have maintained their key men, including 2005-06 Capocannoniere Luca Toni, but their ambitions are limited by a huge 19-point handicap.

Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: To squeeze into the UEFA spots

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inter
Belatedly awarded last season’s Scudetto, the Nerazzurri have gone about building the dream team needed to repeat the success on the field. They have arguably the strongest squad in Europe and will have eyes on the Champions League - Scudetto double. Surely Italy’s underachievers won’t disappoint this time…

Aim: Scudetto and Champions League
Prediction: Strong Scudetto favourites but may stutter in Europe.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lazio
Delio Rossi can be proud of his efforts after guiding the Biancocelesti to sixth place last year. However, the Calciopoli verdict has not only denied Rossi’s men UEFA Cup football but has also cost them 11 points. Without Fabio Liverani, Ousmane Dabo and Paolo Di Canio consolidation may be the name of the game.

Aim: Mid-table
Prediction: The usual inconsistency and a lower mid-table finish

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Livorno
Continue to confound the critics and despite struggling after the departure of Roberto Donadoni, they grabbed a UEFA Cup place after the Calciopoli verdict. Talismanic hit man Cristiano Lucarelli remains and the Amaranto could benefit from others’ point deductions.

Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: Mid-table

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Messina
Survival in Serie A was again gained in the court room rather than on the pitch after Juve took their place in the Second Division. After little transfer activity, the Sicilians’ survival bid may go to the wire.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: May need the courts again

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan
Quieter in the transfer market than their city rivals and starting eight points behind them after the Calciopoli verdict, the Rossoneri must excel if they are to challenge for the title. As ever, the priority may be the Champions League, but a good start would breed Scudetto fever amongst the Diavoli faithful.

Aim: Champions League and Scudetto
Prediction: To fall just short again

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo
Inconsistency continues to blight the Rosanero, but a strong finish to last season allows the Sicilians to take another shot at the UEFA Cup. The defence has been weakened by the sale of Fabio Grosso and Christian Terlizzi but Aimo Diana, Mark Bresciano and Amauri are useful additions.

Aim: UEFA Cup/Champions League qualification
Prediction: Should at least clinch a UEFA spot

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parma
Last season was a rollercoaster ride for the Tardini faithful as the Crociati flirted with the relegation zone before a late charge pushed them into the UEFA Cup after the Calciopoli verdict. Will feel the loss of Marco Marchionni, but can hope to re-establish themselves as a top half side.

Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: To successfully settle in the top half

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reggina
The Amaranto have made a habit of slipping the noose in recent years, but the Reggio Calabria side’s task is even more daunting this time after the Calciopoli verdict imposed a 15-point penalty. Very few new faces have joined the crew on what may be a sinking ship.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: The 15-point handicap will prove too great a hurdle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma
Scudetto candidates by default after the Calciopoli verdict, but have failed to strengthen greatly over the summer with Mirko Vucinic and David Pizarro the only notable arrivals. Coach Luciano Spalletti and Francesco Totti deny that the Giallorossi are title contenders, but they will look to build on last season’s improvement and at least secure Champions League football.

Aim: Scudetto
Prediction: Likely third place

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sampdoria
Last season was another let-down for the Blucerchiati faithful as the Genoa outfit finished closer to relegation than Europe. There have been no big signings in the summer but talented Coach Walter Novellino will look to enjoy a very different campaign this time around.

Aim: UEFA Cup/Champions League qualification
Prediction: Top half

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Siena
It was mission accomplished for the Tuscans last term as they secured a fourth season amongst the elite. A number of players have returned to Juve after loan spells, but new Coach Mario Beretta and his gutsy side are no strangers to a dogfight.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: A trademark Siena escape

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Torino
One of Italy’s most celebrated clubs return to Serie A after an agonising spell in the wilderness. The Granata’s first task is survival and three big-name summer swoops for Christian Abbiati, Simone Barone and Stefano Fiore will help their cause greatly.

Aim: Survival
Prediction: Should survive with ease

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Udinese
Last season was an unqualified failure for the Friuli outfit who crashed out of the Champions League at the first stage and spent long periods perched precariously just above the drop zone. This season is a fresh start but the Zebrette will still be relying on the same stars in Vincenzo Iaquinta, Sulley Ali Muntari, Felipe and Morgan De Sanctis.

Aim: UEFA Cup/Champions League qualification
Prediction: A top-half finish

This season’s news today!
Ten things you’ll read about this season…

In an effort to keep you up to date with the Italian game, Football Italia brings you a brief rundown of the big stories likely to hit the newsstands this season

Ronaldo linked with Inter return
Because nothing beats flogging a dead chipmunk. Considering his recent weight gain, it’s believed Ronie’s nickname will be upgraded to ‘The Walrus of Football.’

Mauro Camoranesi fined by Juve
If he was out of control before, turning up late to training, demanding transfers in the Press, repeatedly getting sent off for the most pointless of reaction fouls, then imagine what the unhappy Oriundo will be like forced to play in Serie B?

Coppa Italia win rescues Inter’s season
Juventus are out of the picture, Milan have an eight-point penalty and the Nerazzurri have signed every player on the planet. Who could possibly mess this up? Inter.

Christian Vieri joins (insert club here) in January
Bobo finally embraces his true calling as a travelogue writer with his new book ‘Around the football world in 80 days.’

Cristiano Lucarelli in Aldo Spinelli row
Like Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, the on-off relationship will keep newspapers happy for months recycling the same tales of arguments, passion and a relationship on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Coppa a key objective, says Coach
It doesn’t matter who, the same cliché will float to the surface just before they field a bunch of acne-ridden teenagers and ‘promising’ foreign loan players for that decisive Coppa Italia clash.

Refs slammed for errors
Luciano Moggi is gone, Calciopoli cleared the cobwebs, but the Italian tradition of insulting referees for even the slightest mistake – then insisting they’re still the best in the world – will continue unabated.

San Siro clubs complain about turf
The pitch is re-laid every three months with grass flown in from every corner of the globe, but the highest paid players in Italy are still going to spend half of every game tapping a clump of turf back into position. There are plans to include the gardener in the MilanLab staff.

Chivu ready for Real Madrid
What Fabio Capello wants, Fabio Capello gets. The serial poacher has plucked his old clubs dry and Roma’s Romanian defender Cristian Chivu is next on the list. If you invite Don Fabio round to dinner, be sure to count the cutlery before he leaves.

Ibra punches Adriano in training ground brawl
Hopefully with ‘This town ain’t big enough for the both of us’ playing in the background while Zlatan ‘Psycho’ Ibrahimovic goes mano a mano with Adriano ‘The Not So Gentle Giant.’

I think Ibra is really going to punch Adriano in the face!!!! biggrin.gif

That ^ is not accurate. Lazio got Foggia and Milan got Bonera and Boriello... Not sure about other teams...

What if we get another season without trophies? The 3rd year in a row?

Next season... old people out? Coach out?

What do you think? Should we keep Carletto even if we fail on all the competitions (once again)?

This year, in case we fail to win any silverware, I think Carlo is not the one to blame ... I'm sure our summer signings do not reflect his choices/demands!!!
However next summer our defence will be even more aged. Cafu will leave (I hope), Costacurta will (probably) retire as will Paolo ... Serginho will be 36 and 'Ffanculi 35!!! We will need new blood in the squadra. It all comes down to the question: Is is better to bring in a new coach too to sum up a new era or keep Carlo within Milan cause he has the necessary experience to "bring up" the newbies???

I think he should stay to help for the new era to be built but it's probably the fear of the new era that makes me think like that!!! unsure.gif

I don't think Carletto should stay. He's in Milan for too long... he can't motivate the team anymore. But that's my opinion. Maybe you'll see me posting this 2339494495958 times during the season.

I don't know who could possible be the head for a new era in Milan. Well, actually I know (who could possibly be available at that time), but I'm not gonna say anything.

Now you got me curious, because I for one don't see anyone available that could replace Carlo right know. Don't forget that Carlo brought Milan back to the top and that's where he is going to keep us until he is here. And I think that he still can motivate the players, it's not about the coach, do you think that Kaka isn't motivated to win the CL and the scudetto again? or some other of the young players, we have now, I'm pretty sure they want to win a lot more. The problem is, players like Pirlo, Seedorf and Gattuso who have practically won everything. Will they still be motivated, I'm not sure, but I think that Carlo will be able to motivate them.

I'm not sure a change of coach is such a good idea, don't forget where we were in the late 90's before Carlo came. And as dst mentioned I think he will be able to nurture the new era that is surely upon us

Billy said at the beginning of last season that Carlo has not have that power anymore ... I think Billy knows what he saying. He's not at the age that would start a dispute for nothing anymore!!! wink.gif

anyway ... there's only one coach I'd like to see in Milan and that's Rijkard. I just came up with this ... It's not that I like him as a coach; in fact I think Ten Caten and the team themselves made him what he is but in my mind ... Milan seem (more) secure (than with anyone else) in his hands!!! He's a Milan legend and everybody loves him here so he'll have full support plus the most important thing is that he has shown as a player that he can be a leader!!! king.gif

anyway ... we'll see ... I have high hopes that Milan will win the Scudetto back this year!!!

Rijkaard is not a good coach. Barcelona without Ronaldinho = 0, and you saw Barça losing points when he was out last season. Good coaches don't need superstars to win.
