Major League Soccer's D.C. United will host Italy's AC Milan in an exhibition match May 26 at RFK Stadium.

It will be the clubs' first match against each other.

D.C. United president Kevin Payne said Monday the game will be "a great test for our players." He also said D.C. United could add games against "two other major European clubs."

Because the game is less than three weeks before the World Cup, AC Milan won't have any of its stars who will be with national teams.

Yup. Tickets go on sale a week from today. smile.gif

Here's the article from DC United's homepage. FYI, it's only 10 days after the end of the season so it won't be one of those disastrous preseason things.

QUOTE
Washington, D.C. (April 12, 2010) - D.C. United announced today the club will play an international friendly against Italian giants AC Milan on May 26 at RFK Stadium. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Kick-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.

“We make it a priority every year to bring international teams to the Washington area,” said United President & CEO Kevin Payne. “AC Milan is historically one of the best clubs in Europe and will provide a great match for our fans and a great test for our players. Furthermore, we’re delighted to be able to offer this game and, potentially, upcoming matches against two other major European clubs to our loyal ticket plan holders as a part of their package.”

Tickets for this match are available as part of season ticket packages as Special Game C. Individual game tickets will go on sale April 19 at 10:00 a.m. for $35 at the Spectator level, $50 at Premium level, $65 at VIP level and $75 at the Mezzanine level. Groups of 15 or more can purchase at discounted prices of $30 for Spectator level, $40 for Premium, $55 for VIP and $70 for Mezzanine level.

The Italian side currently sits in third place in Serie A and includes some of the biggest names in world football. Brazilian legend Ronaldinho and Holland’s Clarence Seedorf headline Milan’s midfield and are expected to be with AC Milan in the Nation’s Capital next month. Another Brazilian spearheads the Rossoneri’s attack, Alexandre Pato, a 20-year-old striker who has set Serie A alight since joining AC Milan in 2007. Veterans Massimo Ambrosini and Filippo Inzaghi have been constants for the Italian club throughout the years, as both men have over 200 appearances for Milan. AC Milan is committed to fielding all of its star players at RFK Stadium not obligated to World Cup duties.

“We are very happy to return to RFK Stadium again, but finally to play D.C.United,” says Umberto Gandini, Director of AC Milan. “After the Italian Supercup in 1993 and a friendly with Barcelona few years ago, it will be great to play one of the most successful clubs in MLS history and to meet again the American fans.”

Founded in 1899, AC Milan is one of the most recognizable names in global football. In the club’s considerable history the team has spent all but two seasons in the Italian top-flight. AC Milan has won 18 officially recognized UEFA and FIFA international titles, making them the most successful team in the world alongside Argentina’s Boca Juniors. Milan has claimed four world club titles, more than any other side, having won the Intercontinental Cup on three occasions and the FIFA Club World Cup once.

Additionally, only Real Madrid has captured more European Cups than AC Milan. Known today as the UEFA Champions League, AC Milan has seven European Cups to accompany the team’s 17 domestic titles. Milan is managed by former Brazilian national team star Leonardo, and the club plays in the renowned Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, or San Siro.

Nice! Pretty reasonable ticket prices too.

And since we're used to seeing only about half of the XI play anyways lately sad.gif , there won't be much of a talent drop-off until the subs come on.
Fishdoll
It'll be a good chance to see the Primavera! (if dst hasn't chopped them into little bits)
Dracoris
This is exciting! I'll have to try to get a group of friends to go...Its like an 8 hour drive for me though.

It'd probably take me a month to drive there. I would need some James Bond underwater car too.

I'd hook you up with some dolphin friends, Kurt, but....well, Harry doesn't have his antlers yet so no dolphin favors for you!
kurtsimonw
Dolphins are evil, haven't you seen South Park? They dropped the atomic bomb on Japan!
Dracoris
If you really care about AC Milan, you would just swim here!
kurtsimonw
I haven't seen Milan play before (strangely I've seen Inter twice!) so I don't think I'll be swimming a few thousand miles to watch our kids play in a friendly. tongue.gif

Hey, guys in Canada -- Fiorentina will be in Montreal to play a friendly against the Montreal Impact on May 23. FYI.
Fishdoll
And hey, servbot, Milan will be in Chicago to play the Fire on May 30. (and in Montreal to play the Impact on June 2).

It will if they release any ticket info!!! It's hardly announced anywhere besides the Milan website, not even on the Fire website yet!
(can you tell I'm impatient?)

Doh!

This is the day i arrive in the USA, but my flight dosent reach Baltimore until 8pm at the earliest

I remember when Milan came to pay Man City last season in a friendly, it was the day before my flight back to Manchester airport from France.

Perennially unlucky?

Im going to Milano 27 May but to bad I can't go 16 may when they are playing agianst Juventus

This fish is annoyed with Ticketmaster and DC United. Tickets for the Milan game went on sale today and the only seats on offer are in the upper stands, behind the corners, or way back in the covered area on the bottom level (in other words, the crappy tickets). DC United doesn't come close to selling the rest of the tickets so I'm trying to see if I can get better seats. Gr.

Are you going off of Ticketmaster or DC's website? (or are they the same?) Certain seats are probably reserved for season ticket holders, but other than that I can't see why they wouldn't list more available.

I'm impatient as can be for Chicago, still no announcements or anything other than ACmilan.com and their blog. My only guess is the Fire are trying to sell tickets for a "sister city" tournament in mid-May before announcing this, but I'd imagine the news would be SOMEWHERE by now!
Fishdoll
DC only sells online through ticketmaster. So I've emailed the club directly and have also asked what passes for the DC United ultra group (have a friend who's a member) about tickets.
Fishdoll
Might be sitting with the DC United equivalent of ultras (cheapest tickets, good location, most excellent tailgate) for the game.

FYI for those interested, the gobbi will be going on tour this summer too. NY and...somewhere in Canada (Montreal or Toronto).

haha, I sort of thought of that. Not that I'll sit Chicago's "ultras" section (laughably poorly named "Section 8", which is also the name for a govt housing program for the poor), but if this would qualify as being the first time I've ever gone to a game of any sport that I was a fan of the road team. Still no luck on finding ticket info for me. Although now in addition to the AC Milan website announcement, Google is also finding this thread, so that's something, I guess. mad.gif
Fishdoll
So, I'll be doing a writeup on the club and the players for the fan club's blog. Anyone want to help - with player stuff/club stuff/proofreading?
servbot
cool, what fan club blog?

It's finally been announced for Chicago! Tickets go on sale May 1, although the sales guy tried to convince me to get season tickets because the single game price will be high. I'm considering it, and then just selling all or most of the other game tickets.

QUOTE ('Chicago Fire website')
A.C. Milan will bring a number of high-profile players for its friendly against the Fire. Scheduled to represent the Milan side will be legendary midfielders Ronaldinho of Brazil and Holland’s Clarence Seedorf. Ronaldinho, the former FIFA World Player of the Year (2004, 2005), is recognized worldwide for leading FC Barcelona to two Spanish Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and the Catalan club’s second UEFA Champions League victory in its history. Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato is set to make his first trip to TOYOTA PARK. The 20-year-old forward has tallied 36 goals in 74 appearances since joining the San Siro outfit in 2007. Current World Cup champion Filippo Inzaghi, who has appeared in 184 matches for the Rossoneri and A.C. Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini will also participate in the match against the Fire. A.C. Milan is committed to fielding all of its star players at TOYOTA PARK who are not obligated to World Cup duties.

Interesting that Pato is mentioned and Nesta is not. I wonder if that is a hint to who is making more progress in coming back faster from injury? Although, I would, if it were my decision, shut Nesta down for the rest of the season and these friendlies, just to be safe and give plenty of time to recover. I'd be tempted to do the same with Pato.
Jack Sparrow
Well I suppose I could volunteer. I hate proofreading a fellow writer's work though. My style of presenting an idea might not be yours. If that makes sense?
servbot
bump

bought my tickets today! $85 (+$9 convenience fee...lol), 8th row on the right side of Milan's first half attack (as long as it's the same as last year's Fire v Galaxy game), right at the top of the penalty box!
Fishdoll
So my tickets are at center pitch, opposite the benches, no more than 7 rows up (more or less where I usually buy tickets for at the San Siro).

I'm watching DC United play Kansas City right now and gosh...DC sucks not-lockes-donkey balls this year. They're awful and I'm not surprised they're still winless. Unless there's some sort of drastic improvement in the next couple of weeks, I'd be disappointed if the Primavera didn't beat the living daylights out of them much less a team of grownups even if they're more or less mentally on vacation.
Habitant
hey btw for all the members that are to various friendlies in the coming weeks, we should all post pics. i'll probably upload some smile.gif
Fishdoll
I will try to make my person remember to bring a camera this time!

So, I've drafted up a brief intro to AC Milan for the DC United fan club blog. Would anyone care to critique?

Partial lineup announcement of who's coming (link to full article on DC United website)

QUOTE
Among the players confirmed are Brazilians stars Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato, and Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf. Additionally goalkeepers Dida and Christian Abbiati; defenders Luca Antonini, Marek Jankulovski, Massimo Oddo, Giuseppe Favalli, Alessandro Nesta and Marcus Diniz; midfielders Ignazio Abate, Davide Di Gennaro, Mathieu Flamini and Massimo Ambrosini; and forwards Mancini, Filippo Inzaghi and Dominic Adiyiah are confirmed. Several more players will be added to the roster next week.

I think they're wrong with at least one as Adiyiah was called up for Ghana. Interesting that some of the kids on loan will be coming back to play.

EDIT: They're also holding an open practice session the day before the match. This fish will be present!
Jack Sparrow
Can you ask your person to give a big kiss to Pirlo for me? And ask him to get his *** to Chelsea or Madrid??
Fishdoll
rolleyes.gif It's going to be hard enough to control her, what with her likely to be all squealy cos of Nesta being around. That alone is enough to make a fish blush.

That said, I might ask her to pass on messages...to guys who're actually going on the tour, not those going to the World Cup. tongue.gif tongue.gif
Jack Sparrow
oh bugger...then kiss Clarence instead. Tell him I think he's hot!
servbot
The same roster has been announced on the Fire website as well, with the addition of Flavio Roma.

DIDAFAN WANTS PICTURES OF HER SQUEEZE. Including one of his oh-so-wonderful tushie. Will extra peepermint bark this holiday season be enough of an incentive?
Fishdoll
Hah. I will make my person take her camera this time!

But I make no promises about her not squealing and forgetting cos of stupid Nesta also being there. biggrin.gif

Guys on acmilan.com it says that Tasotti is taking over the team for the trip to America, do u guys think that we might be testing him to see if he is good enough for our bench?
Fishdoll
Maybe. Or maybe it's just being done as an interim thing since there's been no decision.

DC United is surely going to be no competition for them, United has won 1 game this season and look, well, dire. The Primavera could wipe the floor with them. Can't speak for the other two teams - don't know how Chicago and Montreal are doing. From what I can gather, the trip is more of a propaganda nature/fan building thing/money making (they're supposedly making 3 million euros from the trip). Doesn't necessarily take stellar coaching for that.
Fishdoll
So, since the Primavera will be busy preparing for the final 8 of the Primavera scudetto, none of them will be coming. I am a sad fish about that!

Instead, the guess is that Milan will bring along guys from various of the smaller Serie A clubs to fill out the ranks. Has anyone heard anything about who might be coming along for the ride?

No idea, but when Milan toured the US in 1994, one of those players was Allegri, if I'm not mistaken. wink.gif
Fishdoll
Yup! So maybe guys from Cagliari, Chievo, etc. Who're we friendly with these days?
nuh
Hmm true but i think that Tasotti would be a good option because he worked under Capello and he worked with C.Maldini, Carlo and Leo. He's been here for a while now i would like to see him here

Btw will Yepes be coming?

I guess so, since Colombia didn't make it to the World Cup.

According to tuttomercatoweb, 3 of the guys from other clubs to take part will be Atalanta's Manfredini (lb/cb), Bologna's 2nd keeper Colombo, and Livorno's Pulzetti (midfielder who scored a rather nice goal in the game during which Ronaldo tore up his knee).
