So the Milan charity has gotten together a group of former players to form a team they call Milan Glorie. Included in the group are guys like Baresi, Albertini, Costacurta, Boban, Massaro, etc etc etc. They're scheduled to play mostly 5-a-side games, all for charity.

The first game will be against a group of Brescia alumni on April 3 in Brescia. The ticket receipts will go to the Borgonovo Foundation.

They're also going to play a tournament in Barcelona in the summer against former Barca and Real greats.

link to article in Italian about the Brescia game.
Bluesummers
wow i would love to see rijkaard/gullit in this tournament. Barca and real are going to get owned biggrin.gif
whoarethepatriots
Whatever happened to Fondazione Milan? They were really prominent at one point, and i remember the logo being everywhere
Tennie
They're still doing stuff - including projects with a pediatric hospital and Milan and something (I think it's installing wells and providing mosquito nets) in Africa. They've got a separate page linkable from acmilan.com's italian page.
whoarethepatriots
I remember that they used to auction off Match worn shirts on ebay to help their noble cause. I guess they still do it, although i dont track stuff like that anymore
Tennie
They do do it occasionally. Last time was the jerseys worn during the charity match v. fiorentina for Borgonovo. Off the top of my head I recall Baresi's jersey going for well over 2000 euros.
whoarethepatriots
Yeah, Milan legend jerseys go for ridiculous amounts. I remember a Baresi and Tassotti one going for a similar price back when shirts from Albertini's testimonial were being sold
Tennie
So the Milan Glorie-Brescia game is today in Brescia. for those who have access to Italian telly, it's going to be shown on Sky Calcio.

It's quite a list of greats who may be playing. Here's a list of guys who've signed up to play for the Glorie (not sure if they'll be at the game in Brescia though): Franco Baresi, Daniele Massaro, Carlo Ancelotti, Mauro Tassotti, Filippo Galli, Valerio Fiori, Alberigo Evani, Giovanni Stroppa, Leonardo, Maurizio Ganz, Enzo Gambaro, Stefano Nava, Simone Braglia, Paolo Di Canio, Roberto Lorenzini, Alessandro Costacurta, Roberto Donadoni, Demetrio Albertini, Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten, Sebastiano Rossi, Maio Ielpo, Federico Giunti, Zvonimir Boban, Diego Fuser, Christian Lantignotti, Angelo Carbone, Marcel Desailly e Florin Valeriu Raducioiu.

Here's the Channel 4 article on the game.

Milan’s old glories beat Brescia’s veterans 7-2 in a charity match organised for Stefano Borgonovo’s fight against Lou Gherig’s Disease.

This is the second friendly event in the space of a week, as Sampdoria and Genoa faced off at Marassi in another high-profile encounter.

Around 9,000 fans attended the Stadio Rigamonti to see players such as Leonardo, Daniele Massaro and Paolo Di Canio get back on to the field.

Milan won 7-2 thanks to Maurizio Ganz getting four goals, Massaro a brace and Di Canio one.

Brescia were on target with old favourites Dario Hubner and Chiodini.

Roberto Baggio, who had played for both Milan and Brescia in his career, was expected to take part but had to pull out.

Rossoneri Coach Carlo Ancelotti – a good friend and ex-teammate of Borgonovo’s – sat on the sidelines with him throughout.

Borgonovo is a 45-year-old former Milan, Fiorentina and Brescia star who has been struck down with Lou Gherig’s Disease, a degenerative motor neurone condition.

It is a disease that tends to affect former athletes and has already taken the life of ex-Genoa legend Gianluca Signorini.

Other players who took part in the charity match at the Rigamonti included Franco Baresi, Mauro Tassotti, Alessandro Costacurta, Roberto Donadoni, Demetrio Albertini, Ruud Gullit, Marcel Desailly, Luigi Di Biagio and Evaristo Beccalossi.

Just rewatched the highlights.

Right now, Fishdoll would take Galli back in goal and would really think hard about drafting the backline in too -- watch how disciplined they are in defense -- really impressive.

It's really awesome that these guys do these events. I've never heard of anything like it before.

(from today)

The event today was for a foundation that's been set up to do research into sudden cardiac arrest among athletes. There were 60,000 people at the Bernabeu to watch the game. FT Real 4-3 Milan (text play by play on milannews if you want to go look). Milan's goals by Simone and Rui Costa (2). This is the first time I remember a bunch of the Milan guys participating -- Weah, Lentini, Papin, Cafu, Rui Costa, etc.

Wish I could've seen the game (it wasn't televised here in the US).

Great link cheers for that, and wow some great players in that game!

I know this is the wrong thread to mention this, but for Christ's sake, lighten up on us non-mods being able to open new threads in News.

Anyway, George Weah is getting the biopic treatment, to be directed by none other than Dermot Mulroney.
