MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Thierry Henry is leaving Arsenal to sign with Barcelona in one of European soccer's major transfers of the offseason.

Barcelona will pay $32 million for the 29-year-old forward, who agreed to a four-year contract, Cadena Ser radio and the newspaper El Pais said Friday. Barcelona planned to announce the signing on Saturday.

Henry has been with Arsenal since 1999, scoring a club-record 226 goals in 364 appearances. He helped the Gunners win two English Premier League titles and four Football Association Cups.

As Henry and Eto are good friends, does this mean we get R10 biggrin.gif (Porty, come in, come in biggrin.gif )

Hum, Ronaldinho is a good friend of Henry too.
My theory "1+1=2" is a possibility. Until 31 of August... it is. But everything can happen.

Anyway, we were talking about this transfer in La Liga topic:

That was very likely just from the beginning on...hmh...I have a feeling he won`t settle with ease in the Primera.. unsure.gif

We pretty much all saw this one coming. I thought it would go down last summer.

Our situation at the moment is kind of up in there on whose coming, so lets hope for the best.

ya this is good news for us since i dint want henry (mainly cuz of his age). it is impossible to have henry,R10,messi,eto'o all playing together (not only that but thay have gudjohnsen and will have palacio). way too many forwards and too many SS. R10 will be ours and we should get him for a reasonable price 60-70m euros after all it's not like barca desperatly need him now.

I forgot Messi... Yes with Messi, all together!
They're really pissed off about losing the title and are out of their mind. they don't seem to know that having all these players in one team=suicide.

They will play all together and they will go down all together! rolleyes.gif

Gudjohnsen and Giuly will leave. no doubt about that.
Ronaldinho will stay at Barca. go on and read his interview on FCB's official website, you'll know what I mean...

Maybe Arsenal managed to swap Henry for Messi?
Not likely, but now I'm desperate to see Wenger bring on a proved striker.

We lost Shevchenko, a legend in this club, and here we are as Champions of Europe 12 months later.

It's not the end of the world.
kurtsimonw
Stop bloody complaining!

-Villa haven't BEEN in Europe for 5 years, forget making a final.
-We haven't won a trophy for 11 years.
-It's been 26 years since we won the league.
-It's been 25 years since we won a European trophy (InterToto doesn't count).

You're just greedy. tongue.gif

Well now it's more harder. Cuz you have Chelsea very strong now and Liverpool might be a force and of course United always was there . Maybe if some reach guy would buy Arsenal and give Wenger some money to work with...

Anyway, Henry is almost 31 and is more injury prone than before. Arsen will find someone who can replace him... Even without him last season Arsenal weren't that bad...

Maybe... huh.gif but Henry's future was clearly predictable, but we can't say that about Ronaldinho's... especially after Galliani's declarations about the possibility of ending transfer market once Suazo's deal was completed...
Locke Lamora
But I have been used to Arsenal being a major power in Europe for like 20 FVCKING years!!!
Villa is a mid-table team, so you don't expect them to push for all these titles, do you???

But Porty, youv'e got a point there.
And If Wenger stops signing all these 16-year olds soon and pulls some good transfers, it may provide a turning point for us.
kurtsimonw
I don't expect my team to push for titles, neither should you.

I really don't think you're good enough to challenge Liverpool for 3rd anymore, so you can forget titles. Be happy with Champions League football, appreciate what you get.

I never said you weren't disappointed, I'm just saying not to expect too much.

The greatest of teams don't win everything all the time. Look at United and Madrid recently, when you look domestically, look at Milan. You can't have everything, obviously you're going to be disappointed, everybody gets disappointed when they don't win something.

Well, I am not a HUGE fan of Arsenal, as u r .. But I have been to Hibury and I have watched Henry play ... So it is fair to say that I was really impressed with Henry. He gave the best years of his career to Arsenal (as Sheva did to us..) and now he is cashing in wink.gif

He is in his decline and, as everyone is confirming, Wenger will replace him cool.gif But don't expect to go the distance, cuz it is when u expect the least that u get the surprise of winning the CL (as we did wink.gif ) ..

p.s. Arsenal reached the CL final with this very team that Arsenal has, except without Rosicky and Hleb, but still the same team. Therefor, I don't think loosing Henry (at 31) is a HUGE loss king.gif

It's quite different.

Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell are missing from defense.
Robert Pires from midfield.
Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp from up front.

Without question 5 of their top players over recent years. Oh, and Reyes.
Tennie
I'm no great fan of Arsenal, Locke, but they /do/ play the most attractive football in England. I ENJOY watching them play even if I'm not necessarily cheering for them. And R7 makes a good point -- it may not be the end of the world, Henry moving to Barca. Milan didn't do too badly losing their star striker, after all. smile.gif

Well, when u think about it ... Ashley barely played a part in that CL (he was injured for the best part of the season wink.gif ) ... Cambell, well against West Ham that year, he really screwed up in defense and (though he scored for them) he wasn't at his tip top shape. Pires and Bergkamp (if u know me, u would know I agree about those two wink.gif ) experience is what propelled them YES .. But, as a whole, it was this very team with this manager that reach the CL final .. And don't forget, the team struggled after loosing Viera (as Milan did loosing Sheva..) .. So u have to give credit to the team wink.gif

And Henry, well, he is one of the top 5 strikers there is around wink.gif
kurtsimonw
Arsenal did do very well to reach the final. But I think the loss of those players, some of whom are irreplacable, is one of the reasons they won't reach that level of play for some time.

P.S. I'm still waiting for the news tomorrow.. Henry: "I've not signed anything, I am, and will remain an Arsenal player." rolleyes.gif

Only Henry is irreplacable, out of the bunch wink.gif

If Wenger can bring in 3 players with experience, they will be a tough team to tackle. It all depends on how much experience the side has (as off now, I agree, the side wont reach that level of play..), but with 3 players of experience .. Arsenal could make a HUGE impact next season. You never know cool.gif

you see but they don't have kaka, they dont have nesta in the defence or maldini. They dont have half the midfield milan do. Its alot harder for them to compete than milan is by losing just sheva. I mean gilardino our main guy didn't do sh!T, thats fine kaka did the work for us. If adebayor and rvp don't do the work, whose gonna be scoring? Fabregas, i dont thinkso. Arsenal are in a real piece of work right now, and if they dont spend they'll turn into a mid table team like kurt is suggesting.

no experience is not necessarily the only solution to the problem. If they buy smart, they can still challenge for 1st. First signing is edmillson or Emerson who aren't happy, and they will come cheap. 5 million pounds tops. Second buy trezeguet. They can get him for 10 million pounds tops. And finally trade adebayor for cisse from Marseilles. In total it should cost them 20 million if some clubs are being b*tches. henry will provide them with 10-15 million pounds. If they're not willing to spend 5 million pounds, they dont deserve to be considered a powerhouse.

If they make these sorts of transfers buy bringing in 2 strikers and DM. They will cover henry's place easily. They have a new goalie and also plenty of midfield so they youngs can play. Toure is enough for the defence along with gallas.

They still maintained a strong season last year without much help from Henry but it showed in the CL and prem how much his services are needed.

Losing Henry is a red flag to the whole transfer market saying DONT COME HERE. There aren't many experienced stars that can take Henry's place and there aren't many that would want to come to Arsenal at this point or ones that are in the transfer market to begin with. They are just playing the youth wildcard and waiting for them to develop. There is no way Arsenal will compete with Liverpool, Chelsea or Man U. They might not even take Tottenham.

Okay, Iv'e cleared some things up.
Replacement: Rumor has it Wenger is considering Anelka. With Henry going to Barca I doubt Saviola and Gudjohnsen would care to stick around anymore, so maybe one of those. Otherwise, Tevez, Martins, Cisse or Torres are possible alternatives.
Future: Il'l give the team 2 years.
One year for the new signings to adapt, the next year for winning trophies.
If wer'e still figthing for 4th place in 2009 Wenger will resign, Fabregas with him and unless someone likes Scolari or Hiddink comes in to save us, we are well and truly fvcked.

Saviola is good but I doubt he'll go EPL and Gudjonsen is sh!t. Cisse probably stays in Marseille. Torres... there are reports today in Spain that he's going to sign for Liverpool - 36M euros next week.

Ljungberg may have the experience, but has wasted away all the talent he once had, I don't know where he went wrong. Gallas I agree with. But Rosicky and Denislon!?

Rosicky has spent one year in the EPL, he didn't adapt very well at all either, he'll need time to start playing well, he hasn't got experience in this football.

Denilson has no experience at all, he's 5 months older than me! He's played no more than 25 professional games in his career. Maybe you're thinking of Denílson de Oliveira (Former Betis & Brazil?).

Gudjohnssen left Chelsea on good terms, he won't go to Arsenal. Torres and Tevez will be going to a Liverpool and Inter respectively. Cisse would be the sort of player Wenger would go for, but I'm not sure he enjoys the EPL much after all those broken legs.

I'm not sure who you say as a replacement, unless Wenger continues his faith in Adebayour..
