Ronaldo: Inter are ingrates!
Sunday 10 June, 2007 ::: channel4.com
Ronaldo feels the Inter fans have been “ungrateful†and has found a new lease of life over at Milan.
There was fury among the supporters when Il Fenomeno demanded a transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2002, just as he finally found his full fitness again after two years of injury nightmares.
“I have always been grateful to the Inter fans, but they were not like that with me,†he told RAI television.
“In 2002 I had to escape with a police escort because I was afraid something nasty could happen to me.â€
The main reason behind his decision to walk away was Coach Hector Cuper – who would be fired only a few months later.
“Cuper did not have faith in me and I had none in him. Inter earned a lot of money by selling me, so I don’t think they can really complain.â€
The final straw was May 5, 2002, when the Nerazzurri lost the Scudetto on the last day of the season with a 4-2 defeat at Lazio.
“That was the worst day of my career. We were so sure we would win, but once we got on the field we couldn’t seem to do anything.â€
It was another Coach who prompted Ronaldo’s return to San Siro, this time to the red and black side of the city.
“When Fabio Capello arrived at Real, the situation became difficult for me and I decided for a change. I was a little afraid of returning to Milan, but it all went well,†he said.
“The most emotional moment was when I went back to the locker room after my first brace at Siena. I was the last one in and everybody – bar none – stood up to applaud me.
“It was so wonderful. In 15 years of my career as a professional that had never happened to me before.â€
