Massimo Ambrosini is overjoyed at renewing his contract and is convinced Milan can lift the Champions League.
The midfielder had been linked with Fiorentina after a series of injuries over the past two seasons, but put pen to paper on a new deal tying him to the club until 2010.
“This is a wonderful time and I really wanted to extend my contract with the Rossoneri. Now I just need to concentrate on the Athens Final against Liverpool.â€
Ambrosini was part of the squad that lost on penalties after a 3-3 draw in Istanbul in 2005 and is eager to avenge that day.
“We are more convinced of our strength now than we were back then. The victory over Manchester United gave us that extra confidence.â€
The 30-year-old midfielder has been struggling with fitness worries, but explains where it all changed for him.
“For me, and the whole team, the turning point was our training period in Malta over the Christmas break.
“We all worked very well there and our fitness levels improved vastly, with them our results as well. I needed two things – to train regularly and play consistently. I had both and now can finally play to my standards.â€
Ambrosini’s return has also seen a tactical shift, as with him in the centre Clarence Seedorf and Kaka are given more freedom to roam.
“The secret is to collaborate between the midfield and defence,†noted the Italian international.
There has been a marked improvement in Milan’s performances since the winter break and fitness Coach Daniele Tognaccini reveals why.
“Before Christmas we set out a very detailed training regime. In the Malta camp Massimo began his work aimed at getting him to this level of fitness he is at now.
“It all went well and he rediscovered his courage, confidence and consistency to reach his peak. Basically, he is like a new signing.â€
