Ancelotti loses sight of Euro spot
Sunday 11 March, 2007 ::: channel4.com
Carlo Ancelotti concedes that fourth place is going to be very difficult for Milan after their derby defeat.
“We are six points adrift of that Champions League spot. It is not an abyss, but neither will it be easy to reach this goal,†commented the Coach.
The Rossoneri had been leading Inter at half-time with a goal from Ronaldo, but the final score was 2-1.
“In the first half we didn’t allow Inter much room, while after the break we were lacking something in terms of aggression. They took control of the game and we could no longer double up our marking.â€
Ancelotti suggests it was also a fitness issue, as the game arrived just days after Celtic took them to extra time in the Champions League.
“Aside from individual incidents, the team was very organised in the opening 45 minutes. We felt the strain from the Celtic match over time and Inter took command.â€
Substitute Alberto Gilardino failed to make much of an impact, but Pippo Inzaghi was banished to the stands.
“Having four strikers at my disposal, one of them had to be sacrificed,†shrugged the tactician.
The Rossoneri are currently in sixth place, preceded by Lazio, Palermo and Empoli, while Fiorentina are also in the race for Europe.
“It is true that Milan have not been particularly scintillating this season, so we will have to use other talents at our disposal. I am sure the side will do well. We don’t need to modify our approach. After all, we have the motivation to reach the Final in Athens.â€
