Don't worry some of the players will be so star struck that they will just let them pass through without doing anything.

Don't be surprised if one of them takes out a pen and paper from his pocket and asks one of them for an autograph rolleyes.gif

Man you crack me up. laugh.gif

But again, don't worry too much about possibilities of injuries. I'm sure they have already agreed on this, that the match will be played in a light fashion and since we will want to hopefully get Milan back next year (Carlo already said they where considering it) all the Birkirkara players will be careful. This has been very profitable for the Maltese FA and Birkirkara FC, even more then when Juve and Man U came, so they will do anything they can to please them.

The official line up is already out.

Fiori; Cafu, Simic, Maldini, Grimi; Brocchi, Pirlo, Gourcuff; Di Gennaro; Ricardo Oliveira, Gilardino.

Finally Di Gennaro gets to play. Even if it's against Birkirkara I'm expecting great things from our youngster Di Gennaro. devilsmiley.gif

Milan out to give fans a New Year treat
17,000 expected at Ta' Qali

The scene is set for an unforgettable evening at the National Stadium. A collection of world stars, some of Malta's finest players and a capacity crowd of around 17,000 people.

With the passion of the Milan fans on the Maltese islands making an indelible impression on the visiting Italian reporters as well as the players and coaches of the Serie A club, this evening's match (kick-off 7.30 p.m.) between Birkirkara, the local champions, and Milan is expected to unfold into a spectacle of football.

A New Year treat awaits the 17,000 fans who are expected to fill every nook and cranny of the National Stadium with Carlo Ancelotti, the Milan coach, promising that his team's objective is to delight their admirers.

Ancelotti's desire is also shared by Stephen Azzopardi, the Birkirkara mentor, who understandably craves a respectable result for his team, given their opponents' lofty pedigree.

"I'm also pleased that our fans in Malta will get the chance to watch their heroes play in our friendly match against Birkirkara. We will do our best to entertain the crowd."

Indeed, the pitch of the National Stadium will be awash with exceptional talents, the likes of Paolo Maldini, a legend in his own right, Alessandro Costacurta, Brazilian livewire Kakà, Cafu, winner of two World Cup titles with Brazil and Clarence Seedorf, the Dutch midfielder who has won the European Cup with three different clubs.

Fears that four Milan players who starred in Italy's amazing run to the World Cup title last year, were going to miss this evening's much-awaited friendly, have also ebbed away as the organisers and the administration of Milan confirmed that their legion of Italy internationals will be at Ancelotti's disposal.

Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, Filippo Inzaghi and Alberto Gilardino were given time off from Milan's training camp in Malta to link up with their fellow World Cup winners for a presentation ceremony in Rome yesterday.

The four World Cup stars were due to fly back to Malta last night.

In comments he made during Net TV's Replay programme on Sunday, Ancelotti also revealed that Leandro Grimi, the 21-year-old Argentine defender Milan signed from Racing a few days ago, will make his debut today.

Further confirmation, if any were needed, of Milan's intention to give a run-out to all their big guns this evening came with the news that Ricardo Oliveira, the Brazilian striker recruited by Ancelotti to fill the huge void left by Andriy Shevchenko last summer, joined his team-mates for the second part of their training camp here.

As the two coaches will not have a limit on the number of substitutions they can make today, the probability is that Milan will field two different teams in each half.

Meanwhile, at a news conference yesterday, Seedorf voiced his satisfaction at the smooth progress of Milan's winter training camp.

"The preparation here in Malta is very particular, a nice experience in many aspects," he said. "However, it is also stressful because we've been working hard and have little time left for ourselves. Nevertheless, I think that's only fair, given that there are so many Milan fans here."

Milan adhered to their usual schedule yesterday with two training sessions.

Away from the spotlight, Birkirkara yesterday put the finishing touches on their preparations for today's friendly.

For the first time this season, Birkirkara coach Azzopardi is not burdened by a hefty injury list with Argentine-born midfielder Dario Larrosa and long-term absentee Antoine Zahra the only players who will miss the match against Milan.

Roderick Briffa, who figured in two training sessions with Milan last week, and Adrian Ciantar have both recouped their fitness.

Although the result is not a top priority in today's friendly, Azzopardi is hopeful of a respectable outcome for his team.

Unique experience
"The result is important," Azzopardi remarked. "Needless to say that we don't have pretensions to beat a strong team like Milan but we don't want to be humiliated.

"I expect my team to give a good account of themselves and contribute to making this match a spectacle for the fans.

"It's not everyday that a Maltese team plays in a front of a full house at Ta' Qali. Since that title-deciding match between Birkirkara and Valletta in 1998, I doubt whether there have been other occasions when our National Stadium was full.

"It looks like this will be a unique experience for our players and I'm sure they will try hard to leave a positive impression."

Birkirkara are playing at home but the atmosphere is expected to resemble that during a home Milan match, what with thousands of Maltese tifosi set to throng the stands of the National Stadium.

"The football culture in Malta is such that local fans support foreign clubs more than Maltese teams," Azzopardi said. "Probably, there will be thousands of supporters cheering for Milan at the stadium but we respect their opinion. I hope that our fans will also make their presence felt."

The positive comments of Ancelotti and company about their training camp here have increased the exposure of this exercise, both locally and abroad. With the image of Birkirkara FC, the organisers, receiving a significant boost, Azzopardi is now hoping that the feelgood factor helps to turn his team's fortunes around in the Premier League.

"We have never lacked motivation but the injury problems we had took their toll on our performances," Azzopardi said. "The decision to bring in new foreigners did not reap the desired dividends but I'm now hoping that this landmark match against Milan is a new dawn for our team this season."

Birkirkara-Milan at Ta’ Qali

Local champions Birkirkara will be facing star-studded AC Milan this evening in a lucrative friendly (exhibition) match at the Ta’ Qali national stadium.

The expected large crowd will see the culmination of a one-week training camp staged by the famous Italian club in Malta.

This visit generated a lot of interest and enthusiasm among local Milan fans and Italian football enthusiasts in general and it was no surprise that tickets for all the activities, including today’s match, have proved to be very popular.

Wherever the players have been – either at the Ta’ Qali training grounds or on the sand at Golden Bay, they were followed by thousands of enthusiasts who must have felt more than honoured with the presence here of such world renowned stars.

Tonight’s match will see both teams playing some exhibition football, especially from Milan, who will include all their top stars at one time or another during the 90 minutes. These will include Clarence Seedorf, Paolo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Alberto Gilardino, Gennaro Gattuso, Massimo Ambrosini, Pippo Inzaghi, Dida, Costacurta, Kaladze, Cafu, Grimi, Simic, Borriello, Kalac, Favalli, Ricardo Oliveira, Aubameyang, Bonera, Jankulovski, Gourcuff and Cristian Brocchi not to mention all the others.

The fans have been waiting for today to see the players not just training, but actually playing, even if it will be modest Birkirkara who will be providing the opposition.

As Stripes coach Stephen Azzopardi said, no comparison can be made between the two teams. He says that the Stripes will try to cut a good figure. “It is a big experience for us all, especially our players, and despite the huge gap between the two teams, we feel honoured to be playing against them,” he said.

Azzopardi has now recovered most of his injured players and it seems as if only Argentine striker Dario Larrosa, apart from Antoine Zahra, will be unable to make an appearance.

In any case, it is evident that all players in the two squads will be making an appearance during the match. This will give the opportunity for the Birkirkara players to say “we have played against Milan”. On the other hand, the fans will be able to see all their favourites in action live, not on TV, but on the lush Ta’ Qali Stadium surface.

Tonight’s match should be a great occasion for local sport and although it is just a friendly, I expect the local champions to be given priority in terms of support. Let us forget about the mistakes of the past. Let us all enjoy the match and applaud all those who deserve it.

Last year Aubameyang in primavera played also in midfield sometimes, because Ardemagni was the first striker, so Ancelotti hasn't lost it. It's a friendly so he is also trying some new things.

Finally found some time to write me 'match review' wink.gif biggrin.gif

First off Milan most probably regarded this match as a possession training session.

The first goal was a piece of brilliance by Pirlo and some great finishing by Oli, the ball was chipped over the defence by Pirlo, to find Oli who had timed his run perfectly. Gila and Oli where linking up pretty nicely also in attack and both where unlucky not to score 2 each but Birkirkara's keeper was having a very good first half. Gila had a header literally scooped from underneath the bar as it was going in.
We went into half time with just a 1-0 lead, but it should have been much higher, but credit to the Birkirkara players who where really pressing our players every time they got the ball (that was pretty much there tactic for the entire match to double team or even triple team the player with the ball, this went on until they got tired, that’s when the other goals started to flow in).

In the second half Carlo practically changed the whole team except for Bruscagin who moved in at right back which allowed Grimi to step in in the LB position. We took a little time to get back into the stride of things after half time because of the whole change in the team. This is when the chances for Birkirkara came (just 2 though). But after their 15 minute spell of "attacking" they got tired and that's when they started to leave gaps for Seedorf to work in. The second goal came from a cross from Boriello from the left, Pippo shot but it was saved Seedorf took the rebound from just inside the box and shot it in a practically empty net. The third was a run from deep in midfield from Seedorf, Favalli ran with him, Seedorf fed him the ball as he was on his run and Favalli shot it in from just inside the box (this was probably our best goal of the match). Our 4th and 5th was Pippo the poacher at his best wink.gif .

I’ll try to find some good highlights later in no one can find any.

About the primaveras. Bruscagin was the most impressive, he played the entire match and was pretty solid throughout. He switched flans in between halves, and was good on both but didn't go forward much when he switched to the right flank, I'm guessing it's because this isn't his natural position.

Di Gennaro was average, he didn't do much, Willy was good, and Guerci was good also. But neither one of them did anything special.

Facchin the primavera goal keeper was VERY impressive he made a great save from a header from point blank range, and made another couple of great saves. I think he's even better then Kalac and that useless Coppola we bought for no reason.

About Grimi, he doesn't have that much of an imposing physical stature, but he was winning a lot of headers against a guy that was practically twice his size, but he does tend to get out muscled easily, but that is something that could easily be worked on at milanello. His sense of positioning is good, and also his distribution of long and short passes from the defence is very good. But the best thing he was doing was sending out cross field lobs right to the attackers, our last 2 goals came from his long balls from the defence and we also created another great chance from one of his long balls, they where all very accurate, each time practically landing at the feet or head of one of our attackers. All in all he was pretty impressive, although this was a game against Birkirkara, but considering it was his first game for Milan I think he did pretty good.

btw sorry guys but I can't show you any pics cause my bro lostthe camera on our way back, I think he left it on the bus or something. mad.gif sad.gif

You should wait and see him for yourself since you are our defence expert here. But I think you’ll like him. He was constantly interchanging roles with Favalli from CB to LB and when he had to defend he was solid. Although he was a bit shaky when he started, as would be expected. Again he lacks physical strength but that is something that could be worked on.Tassotti was also on the touch line observing him closely for the entire half.

I hope Grimi turns out to be a great player but the thing is, we already have a great LB in Jankulovski (although he hasn't actually been great so far this season). What about the RB "department"??

The RB area is the most worrying I think. There hasn't even been a primavera that played a few minutes that at least caught someone's eye. For example like Antonelli did in the Coppa game in the San Siro.

But the primavera that impressed me the most was the goal keeper, Facchin.

From what I heard he played better as a CB than as a LB, so Jankulovski could keep his place and Grimi could get his wish & play alongside Paolo. Especially for the next couple of games or so seeing as Nesta & Kaladze are out.

Yeah, that's the real question. I wish Lotito & Galliani would hurry up & decide whether we get Oddo or not! mad.gif
