Milan have refused to speculate on when Alessandro Nesta will be back in action after he went under the knife on Monday.
The Italian international could be sidelined for something close to three months or even longer, but the club are making no predictions at this moment in time.
“Alessandro Nesta underwent shoulder surgery at the Madonnina clinic in Milan this morning,” read an official statement.
“The club will evaluate his recovery time over the next few days.”
The former Lazio symbol has been struggling with fitness for some time after damaging ligaments in his left shoulder.
Meanwhile, teammate Serginho will undergo a hernia operation on Tuesday which may bring his career to an end.
The Brazilian could be ruled out for the season and it is not yet known whether the veteran will be handed a new deal.
The loss of Nesta and Serginho could now see the Italian giants make a move in the January transfer market.
Although they have been associated with a striker, Vice-President Adriano Galliani today admitted a new stopper may arrive after Christmas.
“It is not true that we are after a forward,” he stated. “We are evaluating whether we will need a new face to deal with the absence of Serginho and Nesta.
“Their loss may see us turn to a defender.”
It is unclear at this stage who they could target, especially if they are after a player who would be eligible for the Champions League.
