Why is Milan called (in other languages besides italian/english) "AC (Milano*)"

*Name of the city - Milano - but in the language we're talking.

For example, in Portugal I would say 75% of the newspapers call AC Milan, but the others call "AC Milão" (Milão = Milano in portuguese).

In German, once I saw in DSF, AC Mailand or something like this... I must say I hate this.

It's MILAN! If it wasn't the club should be called AC Milano by the italians...

In bwin.com , our sponsor... on the portuguese version there's always "AC Milão" ...

I've sent an email, but I think nothing will change... what a stupidity. rolleyes.gif

Totally right the founders of the club where English that's why they decided to keep Milan's name Milan and not Milano to honour the founders of the club who where british

That's why there is the English flag in our badge

Herbert Kilpin was the founder of the Milan football and cricket club in 1899. He was born in Birmingham.
A lot of foreign teams were formed by British ex pats.

I guess it's quite normal that people refer to a club in their native language. If the city of Milano is called Mailand in Germany, well it's called like that. I don't like it too, I think Milan sounds much better AND it is the clubs name.
But you can't blame anyone for calling the club AC Milao or AC Mailand or whatever. I've also never heard anyone calling Bayern Muenchen Bayern Muenchen, it's Bayern Munich or whatever, so we're not the only ones having this kinda problem biggrin.gif

In Italy Inter is know as Internazionale or simple as Inter. Never Inter Milano. Just on the other countries is adapted: here in Portugal, for example, is "Inter de Milão"... in English media is "Inter Milan", etc etc etc.

But the official club name is Internazionale Football Club (registered in Lega-Calcio, italian league).

Yes but Inter is also known as Inter Milan because we where once one team known as Milan FC, but some of the people involved in the club wanted to sign more foreign players, so they split and founded their own club, Internazionale Milano.

You know how the saying goes "nothing is as good as the original" well it really applies in this issue smile.gif

I thought Herbert Kilpin was the 1st ever Captain, and that Alfred Edwards was the founder? Yea, Vicenza has an English origin too. I hate it when Inter are called "Milan" or "Inter Milan", and Milan are called "AC". Or if you say you support Milan and someone asks you "which one?" It's AC Milan or Milan and Internazionale (FC) or Inter.
Costacurta
Yes I knew about the English founder and everything, and it was once Mussolini came to power that it became AC Milano. However, after the fall of his fachist regime, the Milano was returned to Milan in honour of the English founder, but the AC remained, and they refrained from restoring the FC.

Barca was also founded by an Englishman too as someone mentioned.

Sounds like "AC Milan" is a good compromise then I reckon, seeing as we're based in Italy but founded by a Brit. I particularly feel, and have always felt close to this club for 13 years because I am half British & half Italian, even if I have always lived in England. Also I have 2 Aunties & Uncles that live in Milan who I used to go to see every year. It's a great feeling to be in the same City as my heroes, even if they & my Cousins all support "La Vecchia Puttana". About the Mussolini thing, obviously he was as evil as Hitler so I don't know why I'm surprised, but I can't believe the nerve of the guy - interfering with something that has absolutely nothing to do with him and over something so petty too. At least he was hung in the end biggrin.gif

Just noticed, this is my 100th post!!! I'm so proud of myself, it doesn't feel like 9 months ago since I joined here. And signing up here is probably the best thing I've done in the last 9 months!
