In here, a surprise yesterday: Porto lost against their primavera team. laugh.gif

They lost against Leiria - people say it's Porto B team - because they've some players on loan and the coach is an ex-Porto striker. Quaresma was sent-off (straight red).

Benfica won today. (Simao and Luisao scoring)
They're 5 points behind Porto then.

If Sporting win tomorrow in Boavista stadium, they'll be 4 points behind the leader Porto.

I was watching Benfica (away at Belenenses) again tonight.

Rui Costa was there!! king.gif king.gif as well as Katsouranis and Nelson. They all played a fair game...

Belenenses played the ugliest football I've watched for quite a long time!! What the f were they doing on that field, it was definitely not football. No brains, no technique, no nothing... pure fast Shaolin Kung-Fu!! I think they got like 6 or 7 yellow cards in the last 10 minutes.

But Benfica survived in the end and won 2-1! biggrin.gif

I can see Benfica have increased their number of fans (specially in Greece with Katsouranis - fckin' great player, and Karagounis).
60% of people in Portugal are not enough? rolleyes.gif

What about the Greek league? Who's on top? PAO or Olympiakos?

Well actually Nelson was the one that did the job. Then they kicked Loverpool out of the CL and then came Rui Costa...

I was never a Katsouranis fan and didn't believe he was that good... I think he was voted in the best XI or something by some Portuguese mag!?

In Hellas, Rivaldo's Olympiacos is first by some 5 points I think... PAO and AEK come after but I don't remember who's second and third! biggrin.gif

Oh by the way, I heard Santos wants some more of AEK's players... Cirillo (CB) and Sorrentino (GK) I think. He will need the former if Luisao leaves and the latter is a very good keeper and he will probably return to Italy, maybe at Genoa (who are building a good squad by the way!!). What about Karagounis, will he keep him at Benfica for the next season!??

Rui is class. Today he made the 2 assists for the goals.

Yes. He is on the best 11 of the 'bwinLiga' (how the Portuguese League it's called). Lucho Gonzalez (Porto), Moutinho (Sporting Lisbon) and him were elected as the best midfielders on the first half of the season. It wasn't 1 mag. It was almost every single paper who chose him. He is very good.

Dunno anything about those players. I heard something... but Benfica transfer this window was Derlei (ex-Porto, from Mourinho era) - brazillian foward. A good add.

Karagounis? I think he's doing a good job. He is like a backup for Benfica's midfielder. A great backup. You know, those players who get in to hold the ball when the team is winning. Dunno if he's staying for next season.

A question, it's OlympiaKos or OlympiaCos? Rivaldo still plays some good football? wink.gif

It's usual here. Maniche, Costinha, Jardel (big times), etc, many if not the majority of the players are caught by the police like that.

Luisão is still the best defender in league and the true leader of Benfica. Oh, and he was drunk because he was at a restaurant with his wife (maybe too many Coca-Colas laugh.gif ). rolleyes.gif Not a party or something like that.

Lyon did it guys they won a match by ... 1-0 laugh.gif

I watched Bordeaux-Marseille (1-0) and I realized how pitiful is Ribery and Cissé, I really dont know what those guy is doing the French NT?! (Well, may be cause there is no others laugh.gif)

Anyway, it was a poor game and the pitch didn't help at all, Marseille had some great moments but they didn't score, and Ramé (Bordeaux GK) was great!

Actually I watched the game for young Nasri, a couple friends of mine told me that he was great, so I watched and I think for a 19 yo player he's really great, he hasn't the physical presence of Yoann but he has much more technique (with the ball) and is very clever. He had a great fisrt half then vanished in the second, but he definitely has a great future smile.gif

In the first year in Porto he was a joke. Really... Kaladze-like, maybe worse. But now he's like the "Luisao from Porto". Obviously not THAT good as the Benfica and Brazil NT one, but he's good. Probably the 2nd best defender in the league. Agressive.

He scores a lot of goals in corners and fk (headers). Juventus and R.Madrid rumours were all around him on the last month.

Porto has clearly 4 top players: Quaresma, Pepe, Lucho Gonzalez and Anderson (still very young though). The others are good, but this are the "ones".

Don't you have RTP Internacional? I think they broadcast the League matches live. Ask dst, I think he watches Benfica matches in that channel. He knows better than me.

In here we basically just use the PPV channel SportTV1 and 2.

*grin* No, I don't have RTP -- that's a satellite station here and I have cable. Sadly, watching a stream isn't an option either, as I'm on an antiquated dialup connection. For the majority of Portuguese games (ie, not UEFA Cup or Champions League which I DO get), I follow via Mais Futebol or other Portuguese websites.

Yep. Porto score on a fk, Pepe's header on the 1st half. (Benfica missed Luisao - injuried)
Benfica scored on the 2nd half, Lucho's own goal.

I think we have the harder run in though to be honest. Having to play both Braga and Sporting. They're both home ties, but still possible banana-skins on the way to the title.

Of the big leagues in European football, it's the worst of the lot.

Lyon win it EVERY year.

Some people like this, but the gap between 2nd and last is very few points. I don't like it when all teams are the same.

The Eredivisie is really something this season. All top 3 have the same ammount of points with 1 game left to play, but AZ have a much superior goal difference. I would really like to see Ajax win it.

Btw, Sneijder was amazing in their last game

Holland:

Lisbon derby: Benfica 1-1 Sporting (Benfica played without Luisao and Simao... rolleyes.gif Even with that they got a draw. Sporting was better IMO.)

1. FCPorto 62p

A championship game meaning, the top 3 or 4 teams going into a play off sort of thing right?

I personally don't agree with that. If a team has been amazing for the entire season and is in first and the ones behind him are far off by more then 10 points then I can't see how it could be more fair.

If you are referring to the fact of deciding a league on goal difference when points are level then I would totally agree with you

He was injuried great part of the season. Now he decided to play 1 more year in Benfica.
He's more like someone who can get in and change a match. He can only play 50-60 minutes max.

But his presence in Benfica is important. He's a symbol of the club. Just like Vitor Baia in Porto.

@dst: Katsouranis had a superb season until March. Then he seemed really tired in almost every game. Anyway, everybody in Benfica (the directors, F.Santos, the other players, the fans) love him. They look at him as an example. He'll be in the first 11 on the next year(s) I believe.

Wesley Sneijder appears to be at odds with Ajax over Valencia's failed bid for his services.

The Che had been speaking to Ajax for some time about the talented midfielder, but their bid hit the buffers over the weekend when the Amsterdam club confirmed a fee had not been agreed.

Ajax added that they expected Sneijder to knuckle down and show commitment to the club, but the 22-year-old seems intent on securing a transfer away from Amsterdam.

"Officially, I have heard nothing about it yet, but the last words have yet to be spoken about this," Sneijder told De Telegraaf.

"The only way to break with Ajax is by kicking up a fuss. But that's not my style."

Sneijder has a further two years to run on his contract and feels the time has come for Ajax to cash in.

He added: "This is the moment for a transfer.

"I have been playing in the first team at Ajax for five years. And surely Ajax don't want to let me walk out for free in two years' time?"

He's staying. Now he has to fight for his place with Marc Zoro (ex-Messina).

From GREECE:

José Peseiro (ex-Sporting Lisbon coach) joined Panathinaikos. He's a good in tactics, but problem is that he should be a strict guy, and he isn't. He left Sporting because of that.

In Sporting he lost the championship (to Benfica) and the UEFA Cup final (to CSKA Moscow) in the last week of the season. So painful for the Sporting fans. rolleyes.gif

puke.gif Beckham was only ever the 4th best midfielder at MU when he was playing there. He's good - and I've been happily surprised by his recent form - but Giggs, Scholes, and Keane were (and, in the cases of Giggs and Scholes, ARE) still better.

R7 said Cantona was the only player he really liked, I didn't mean to put accross that he was good, just that he should like him. cool.gif

But I agree that Beckham was definetly not as effective as Scholes or Giggs going forward and Keane was the better defensive player of the 4.

Winning ISN'T everything.

We've got some of the best players in the World. Regularly reaching the last 8 of tournements, some teams would kill for that. Who's CONSISTANTLY better than us?

Germany? (Euro 2000, 20004)
Italy? (Euro 2004)
France? (World Cup 2002)
Holland? (World CUp 2002)
Portugal? (World Cup 2002)

You know who says 'Winning ISN'T everything'? wink.gif

Consistantly? England NT is consistantly good in failing almost every time.

You forgot about euro 2000 where they failed and WC 1994 in which England didn't played at all. These teams you mentioned maybe fail once in a while to reach final stages of some competition, but unlike England, they compensate they fans by winning tournaments. To compare England NT with teams like Germany, Italy, Argentina and France is a joke.

Enland Euro record:

1960 - Did not enter
1964 - Did not qualify
1968 - Third place
1972 - Did not qualify - Quarter-finals
1976 - Did not qualify
1980 - Round 1
1984 - Did not qualify
1988 - Round 1
1992 - Round 1
1996 - Semi-Finals
2000 - Round 1
2004 - Quarter-Finals

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 13 2007, 10:19 AM

If you want to go back in time then whatever.

Argentina's World Cup record in the last 5 or so tournements has been awful (Maradonna IS Argentina).

When a team can beat us in 90 minutes instead of fluking their way through penalties, fair enough, until then it's down to luck.

A team changes every 8 years or so, so comparing this England team to the ones that have failed is stupid. The teams I mentioned in my last post have all failed in the recent competition, in the last 2 or 3. Maybe not this World Cup, but neither did we. In Euro 2004 the Germans failed, again, as did the majority of teams at the World Cup in Korea.

You seem to consider France a great team? Yes the've made 2 World Cup Finals recently, great for them. What happened in 2002, what about 94 and 90? In fact. in 62, 66, 70, 74 and 78 they failed to make it past the first stage or didn't qualify.

Same in the Euro's. They may have won one recently, but in 64, 88, 72, 76, 80 and 88 they failed to qualify to go with their not getting past the first round in 92.
When you're going to say a team regularly 'fails' put France at the front in line. England have 'failed' 2 or 3 times in the last tewnty years. France have failed a hell of alot more.

Posted by: misha Jun 13 2007, 10:51 AM

I wasn't going back that much but again if you want to look to the entire history: England failed in every Euro until 1996, missed 1974,1978,1994 World Cups also and made it to the Semi finals only TWO TIMES in the history. Take all the euros and world cups ever and you have 3 Semi finals and only 1 win, forty years ago.

Again, every team fails sometimes but some teams actually win competitions also. France won won two euros in 1984 and in 2000, Was in two wc recently and also did great there in the 80th. France = 5 wc semi finals > England = 2. Argentina made it to the 4 wc finals (two without Diego) and won it twice plus won Coppa America something like 13-14 times (more than Brazil).

Euro 2000 happened recently, WC 2002 they lost without a panalties. And the fact that they can't take penalties doesn't make it less of a failure.

You know who says 'Winning ISN'T everything'? wink.gif

Consistantly? England NT is consistantly good in failing almost every time.

You forgot about euro 2000 where they failed and WC 1994 in which England didn't played at all.  These teams you mentioned maybe fail once in a while to reach final stages of some competition, but unlike England, they compensate they fans by winning tournaments. To compare England NT with teams like Germany, Italy, Argentina and France is a joke.

Enland Euro record:

1960 - Did not enter
1964 - Did not qualify
1968 - Third place
1972 - Did not qualify - Quarter-finals
1976 - Did not qualify
1980 - Round 1
1984 - Did not qualify
1988 - Round 1
1992 - Round 1
1996 - Semi-Finals
2000 - Round 1
2004 - Quarter-Finals
*

Well, at least the English NT are consistant in loosing big games...
Remember the Euro Semi Final 1996 rolleyes.gif ?
The only Tournament England ever won was the WC in 1966. Other teams were much more succesfull, in the past and now.
Germany, for example tongue.gif, made it to the WC Final in 2003 (OK, I still don't know how that happened) and to the semi finals in the WC last year. Our last Euros were....well crap, that's correct. But if I see our team playing now I'm certain we're favourites for the next title.

Winning ISN'T everything.

We've got some of the best players in the World. Regularly reaching the last 8 of tournements, some teams would kill for that. Who's CONSISTANTLY better than us?

Germany? (Euro 2000, 20004)
Italy? (Euro 2004)
France? (World Cup 2002)
Holland? (World CUp 2002)
Portugal? (World Cup 2002)
Argentina? (World Cup 2002)

Brazil are about the only team who consistantly do better than us, as for the others, they fail as much, if not worse than us.  wink.gif

Oops....double post...

France have made 5 Semi Finals. England - 2.

So of those 5 semi finals they have one World Cup to show for, THAT is failure. We consistantly do ourselves proud. But I don't really care, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

One thing we have that no other team has ever or will ever have is superb fans. The second tier in English football is the 4th most watched league in Europe. That says alot. wink.gif

Even though we 'consistantly fail' as you put it. We still have the most loyal, passionate supporters in the World. No-one will ever be able to say that, but us. cool.gif

If that's failure then what's Englands 2 Semi-Finals from 6 Quarter-finals?

Anyway, I get it, you are a patriot and therefore a little bit biased.

No. He's not patriot. He's Ingulish. wink.gif

TBH I think the BIG problem of England NT is not their coach, or not only their coach at least. I think the English media always overrating them and all their players is not good.

England NT is one of the best in Europe/World. Everybody knows it but they need to calm down a bit. I remember before the Portugal-England in the WC2006 an English reporter asking Deco if Rooney can be consider at the same level as Pelé... rolleyes.gif

Sometimes they seem the brazillians. Before the quarter-finals they're already discussing which team they'll play in the final. rolleyes.gif

Posted by: dst Jun 13 2007, 01:17 PM

Exactly what Porty said...

What I like in the English team is that they are the only team that take friendly matches seriously!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 13 2007, 01:45 PM

I am biased, of course. Everybody is of their own country. But to say we're failures or over-rated is a bit over the top.

In the history of football there aren't many teams better than us.

Brazil, Yes.
Italy, Yes.
Germany, Yes.
France, over history? They've had too many bad spells of not qualifying for tournements at all to be considered better, but recently they are better.
Argentina, over history they're better than us, recently. Well, our recent results vs them show who's boss. cool.gif
Holland, Spain and Portugal I would consider very similar to us, even without their World Cups, they're still very succesful.

I'd put the teams in this rank over history. 6th isn't too bad out of 200+. tongue.gif
1) Brazil
2) Italy
3) Germany
4) Argentina
5) France
6) England
7) Holland
8) Portugal
9) Spain
10) Uruguay

England is a big team with good players, but just ain't successful like some. I agree with the rating.

They were the best team in the 19th century wink.gif

This is very true !!!

English media have also done this in this years CL .. They had a poll of whom out of Liver, United, or Chelsea would reach the final .. erm Milan anyone rolleyes.gif

Then there is this thing of over-hyping their players .. In Euro04, I was made to believe that a new Pele was being unfolded infront of me .. We all know how Rooney plays now (not 1/4 of his Euro04 performance).

Then there is this coach issue .. TBH, England need Mourinho rolleyes.gif They needs someone who will bench a player without even thinking twice. That is if England want to reach a final rolleyes.gif

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 14 2007, 01:11 AM

Nobody like Mourinho would ever be coach, the FA like somebody they can completely control, and if one mistake is made you're out. Mourinho would end up getting is into trouble with something he'e said or done. The FA wouldn't like that, they're boring. rolleyes.gif

Scolari is pretty fvcked too.

In Brazil he fvcked Romario. Not even Brazil President asking him to call Romario... changed his mind.

In Portugal he did the same with Vitor Baia (FCPorto legendary keeper). Not even an explanation. Simply... not calling him. rolleyes.gif

Mourinho is better coach than Scolari (tactics). More arrogant and fvcked too. But the special thing is that both can motivate the players like no others. That's the big difference and what makes them top-coaches.

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 14 2007, 01:43 AM

I don't see a foreign coach coming in at all. Maybe someone from Northern Ireland (Stay away from MON!) but I can't see anybody else,, not after Sven.

I don't siagree with that, personally I think every country should have a coach from their home land, I'd even go as far as only picking home based players, but that's just me. tongue.gif

Posted by: Rossoneri7 Jun 14 2007, 04:10 AM

No .. u have a point .. But the problem doesn't stop there. England doesn't have a decent goal tender .. I mean after Seamen (His names actually seamen laugh.gif ), there was no goal keeper left and looking at the EPL, (though u might disagree and bring in some youth goal keepers..) there ain't non for the forseenable future.

There lies a HUGE England problem rolleyes.gif ..

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 14 2007, 04:25 AM

I completely agree. Robbo's not good enough for England.

David James has returned to top form this season, and is clearly good enough to play, but at 35 he has no future.

The main reason for us having no future keeper is this. Arsenal, Liverpool anf United.

We've had some top young keeper come through in recent years but they destory them:
Richard Wright: Superb for Ipswich, Arsenal bought him in as a future keeper, he got tired of sitting on the bench and left. By then he'd wasted his ability away. Now he's Everton's 2nd keeper.
Stuart Taylor: Was bought through Arsenals youth team, tipped as a future prospect, Arsenal bought in loads more keepers so he lost his place. Villa's number 2 now.
Chris Kirkland: Superb at Coventry, Liverpool bought him and loaned him out a few times, eventually sold to Wigan when they bought in Reina.

Currently we have Scott Carson and Ben Foster as the two future keepers. They play for Liverpool and United though, so they'll become average eventually. rolleyes.gif

Wow kurt, tht's an interesting point...but it seems to be the case everywhere. Spain are just lucky with Casillas.

And Italy well, there'sGigi and then Amelia?? He's not playing for a world conquering side yet is he?

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 14 2007, 09:21 AM

There aren't many top keepers around at the moment by the looks of things. When you get past Buffon, Casillas, Cech and Dida there aren't many big names left. Guys like Palop at Sevilla, Boruc at Celtic are very good keepers, but not at the highest level.

The World needs more keepers, why don't ou try out, Jack? tongue.gif

Posted by: Jack Sparrow Jun 14 2007, 11:22 AM

Naah...the world needs more Andy Ps....how many people can u think of who play his role. Xabi Alonso ok...then?? Heck Pirlo practically invented the Pirlo position...tongue.gif

Just thought I'd give some news on a match in the Norwegial league.
Lyn vs. Brann, 70 minutes played and Lyn are 5-0 up! The Brann keeper has been sent off.
Whats so strange is that Lyn is a medicore team while Brann were runner-ups last year, and this year they were clear favourites.

Posted by: Portikins Jun 17 2007, 12:23 PM

Antunes, Portuguese young LB, could be on his way to... Juventus. ohmy.gif

Aston Villa, Celta, FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon are on the list too but obviously the biggest challenge for him would be the Vecchia Signora.

Go to germayn, that's where are the good GKs come from tongue.gif (and where we have a good playmaker only once in a decade mad.gif ).
Seriously with Enke, Weidenfeller, Wiese, Jentzsch, Schäfer and Hildebrand there are many good GKs, while Neuer and Adler will be on top of the world in a few years.

True. German keepers = Top-class.
Enke... the one who left Benfica. That guy was/is loved by the Benfica fans.

Well...it won't happen. Shearer was a great striker....I really liked him a lot. Along with gary Lineker he was the best english striker in the last 20 years IMO.
