What do you all think about this matter? Maldini seems to be having a very strange injury. He said he always has pain and it doesn't go away. sad.gif It's been a long time and he is still injured... What do you all make of this? Do you think he can recover or is this it? I'm very upset about his situation. He definitely doesn't deserve what he is going through.

Paolo is a fighter. There is nothing that he can't do. He is invincible. He even isn't a human. king.gif
It just a matter of time

Posted by: han2503 Aug 17 2006, 12:52 AM

Sadly I just don't see him getting back to a 100%, he has had almost all of last season and the summer to recover and he still isn't ready, I'm sure that he will play some games next season, but I don't see him being a regular.

I do so hope he'll come back. He's a legend. What I've seen from him at the beginning of the last season was really great for a 37 - year old. He's fighter, that's true. But I'm afraid he won't recover 100%. But I do so hope there will be one or 2 titles I can add to my sig biggrin.gif

I'll be praying for your wish to come true wink.gif biggrin.gif

I just hope that he will get to come back at least for a few games, I'm sure if he won't get to 100% by the end of this season he will surely retire, he has always said that he didn't just want to fade away and if he wasn't up to it anymore and couldn't play regularly he will retire cry.gif sad.gif

I just hope that he will get to go out with a bang by winning the CL or atleast the scudetto

I was just thinking about this but, if those 2 scudettos where rightfully awarded to us since we deserved them and we would win this year's scudetto then Maldini could say that he would have been their for the making of our second star, but sadly we where cheated out of those 2 titles

Yeah, I think it the same way. If he doesn't get back to 100% by the end of this season, then he'll definitely retire.

Unfortunately I think old Paolo's body has given up on him, it is, frankly, exaughsted. He seems to have a persitant knee injury, which hasnt been cured by operations, rest, or whatever. I am very sorry to say that I think his playing days are, bar a couple of cameo appearances, over. Even if he wanted to go on another season, he simply couldn't.

I too hope his last season is crowned with the greatest glories, and that his son is as good as his father and grandfather.

I'm so sad about this but my all-time favourite player is soon to retire!!!
I was so sad when I saw Cannavaro lift the WC trophy and I thought ... hey where's Paolo? He should be the one cry.gif

I can't even imagine what a great testimonial match Milan will have for him ... My heart will explode, it already hurts talking about Paolo's retirement!!!!It's funny though ... we can't ask for no other former team of his to come play against us!!!!! smile.gif cry.gif

NIGHT THE BOY BECAME A MILAN

Gord: I knew teen Maldini was world class when he took me to cleaners
By Neil Cameron

GORDON STRACHAN eyed up the fresh-faced AC Milan defender and decided he would have a bit of fun teaching this young buck a thing or two about football.

But just 90 minutes later it was the experienced professional who was given a lesson and there and then he predicted the boy he had just come up against was going to be a superstar.

What the former Manchester United player couldn't have predicted was that two decades later he would be the Celtic manager and would once again have to face the kid who ran him ragged in a friendly match.

The rookie left-back in question was a certain Paolo Maldini who is still going strong for the Milan giants after a career which, let's face it, has been fairly decent.

Strachan smiled as he recalled an end-of-season game at Old Trafford when the winger truly believed an easy evening awaited as he eyed the nobody he was to go up against.

Maldini is, of course, a legend of the game and it is incredible to think that this wonderful footballer is still playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world at 38. He has said this will be his last season but we have heard it all before.

And you have to wonder if the AC Milan captain remembers the night when he gave a wee ginger Scotsman a torrid time of it.

Strachan said: "I played against Maldini years ago when he was a youngster. AC Milan had just won the league when they came to Old Trafford at the end of the season for a game.

"He was left-back, only 18, so I thought to myself that it would be an easy night for me. I spent 90 minutes in reverse. I saw that night that he was special.

"That was a team with Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten. They were fantastic and we managed to scrape a draw.I have no idea how.

"Maldini has had a great career and still to be going is fantastic."

The AC Milan Strachan and his players will face are not of that vintage but they are still mighty opponents. Maldini is still there as is the incredible Alessandro Costacurta.

Then you add the names of Rino Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Cafu. All World Cup winners. Brazilian Kaka, on his day, is as good as anyone, yet the consensus rightly or wrongly is Celtic have got themselves a decent draw.

That may well be true but Strachan pointed out that for his side to beat the Italians they must be at full strength and every last man will have to be at his very best.

He said: "I would like to have a full squad for the games. I couldn't say anything about the AC Milan players. They have done enough in the game and I can't be commenting on them. It's going to be a massive test."

Not only a test, but a fantastic learning experience for this relatively young Celtic side. Strachan yesterday joked about the not-so-exotic places he visited with Aberdeen on their foreign travels when trips to Bulgaria and Albania were far from easy.

But the team he learned most from was Liverpool who, as European Cup holders, faced the Dons in 1980 and gave them a footballing lesson. Strachan took a lot from that doing, a 5-0 defeat over two legs was the end result, and his hope is that players such as Stephen McManus and Mark Wilson will learn from playing the superstars of Milan.

He said: "It will be great if all the younger boys can get involved in this. They will find out what they need to do to compete at this level.

"They can't just say that they played well against Dunfermline last week. If you want to be a top, top player then you must be recognised in these games.

"We got battered by Liverpool when Aberdeen played them. We were a right young side and it was only then that we realised we would have to be some team to play at that level.

"It also helped me personally. I moved on after playing at the highest level and that helped me in England."

AC Milan will have to be forgotten about for a couple of months as there is plenty of football for Celtic to be concerned with in the meantime - tomorrow's Old Firm game for a start.

But these two games in the distance do keep every player on their toes. Standards won't be allowed to slip because a few bad games and you'll be watching Kaka and Co from the bench.

Strachan said: "There can be long winters here. The training is hard but this tie keeps us ticking over. Guys with injuries will keep themselves going in the gym because they know at the end of it there is the chance to play AC Milan. It gives them that wee added incentive."

The matches against the Italians offer Shunsuke Nakamura a return to the country where he made his name and he is determined to emulate the strike that stunned Manchester United in qualifying Group F.

Nakamura said: "I'm delighted to be going back to Italy and especially somewhere as special as the San Siro. It's a fantastic draw for Celtic and for myself as I get the chance to return to Italy and show the people there what I can do.

"I never really showed my best form when I was with Reggina but I feel at home with Celtic and in Scotland. I'm playing for a club who allow me to play the game the way I want to.

"The winning goal I scored against Manchester United was one of the special moments of my career and I would love now to do the same against AC Milan. It would mean even more to me given the time I spent in Italy as a player."

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell hopes the atmosphere in the east end of Glasgow will inspire Celtic to another famous victory. He said: "It's a fantastic draw, absolutely fantastic.

"It is a great tie for the club, for the supporters and, I'm sure, for Gordon Strachan and the players."

Lawwell insists Celtic must believe they can win the tournament and not think about the next round.

He added: "We always have our targets and that would be quite sweet. It will be a tough task. I'm sure Milan will have all their players back and they will be up for it. "If we didn't think we could lift the trophy there would be no point competing."

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is wary of the challenge his team face and insists Celtic will not be underestimated.

He said: "Celtic are a very good side. They beat Manchester United and they are a team to fear.

"Considering the atmosphere we will face in Glasgow it will be an advantage to play the decider at the San Siro."

Maldini: Juve Wanted Me

The Milan captain revealed this during an interview with 'Sky Italia'.

zoom - galleria Paolo Maldini could have been a Juventus player according to the former Italian international who was apparently approached by the Bianconeri before the 1990 World Cup.

"I was never tempted, but I always knew about their interest and how much they could appreciate me, especially President Boniperti and Agnelli, who told me so clearly when I met them once, I remember, before the World Cup of 1990.

"However, they knew very well what my story was, of my family and how tied I was to Milan."

The Rossoneri are currently in a winter training camp in Malta, as the squad is preparing for the second part of the season with the Champions League being the main priority for the club.

This afternoon, the Rossoneri will face Juventus in the classic Berlusconi Cup in program at San Siro at 5pm CET.

QUOTE ( uefa.com )
Maldini enjoying the moment
Friday, 23 February 2007

As the wall of noise encircling Celtic Park reached a crescendo, there was no sign of tension on the face of the AC Milan captain; nor, for that matter, the 'focus' that sportsmen speak of so often these days. Instead Paolo Maldini responded with an appreciative nod as if acknowledging that here was a moment to savour.

Authority undiminished
Four months shy of his 39th birthday, Maldini knows he may not have many such moments left as age slowly unravels his athletic abilities. Yet anyone observing his 100th appearance in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday could see the on-field authority of this Italian football legend is undiminished. From the seventh minute, when he beat the towering Celtic FC striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to a high ball before swiftly adjusting to intercept an attempted pass to Kenny Miller, to the 90th when he completed the Milan defence's last clearance of the night, Maldini was assuredness itself.

'Still a key player'
As goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac said in praise of Maldini and his defensive colleagues: "Our defence was exceptional tonight, the way they dealt with the high balls and the danger of Vennegoor of Hesselink and the players running off him." True, Milan's slick and plentiful possession in midfield meant Celtic's forwards asked few serious questions of a visiting back line that had attracted criticism for leaking three goals against AC Siena just three days earlier. Yet Maldini, with over two decades of experience to draw upon, still offered enough evidence to support the assertion of Mauro Tassotti, Milan's assistant coach, that he remains "a key player for the team".

Tassotti praise
The marauding left-back of his prime may be a distant memory – and some Italian observers will point to one or two fault lines in his recent performances – but Tassotti, a European champion alongside Maldini in 1989 and 1994, explained that his old colleague still had an important role in the Rossoneri squad. Speaking to uefa.com after the goalless draw in Glasgow that leaves Milan favourites to progress to the quarter-finals, Tassotti said: "Of course we can't ask him to play all the time – he can't manage a game every three days but if we give him time to prepare properly for a game he can still give a lot to the team."

Respect
"He is a great player as everyone can see and also a special person," added Tassotti. "To be playing at this level at his age means you have something special inside." Goalkeeper Kalac underlined Maldini's importance in the Milan dressing room. "He has been around for so long and with a player of his stature, his presence rubs off on the other players," said the Australian. "He does not talk too much but when he says something, you listen. That speaks volumes for the respect he has from the other players."

Staying power
The second-oldest outfield player left in the UEFA Champions League (behind team-mate Alessandro Costacurta), Maldini ascribes his staying power to several factors. "My incredible passion for the game, constant training, sacrifices and a bit of good luck too," he told uefa.com. A carefully controlled Mediterranean diet and a personal training programme developed with the help of the Milan Lab also help. "For the last few seasons I've followed a personal training programme in agreement with our coach Carlo Ancelotti, which I decide depending on my condition and how I feel," he explained.

Future
What of the future then? Maldini has made more Serie A appearances this season than he did throughout the whole of 2005/06 and according to Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani, he could still be playing in his 40th year next season - Galliani having stressed that the decision whether or not he continues lies exclusively with the player. Looking further ahead, it seems unlikely right now that Maldini would follow his father Cesare into football management, although a position working with his beloved Milan could beckon. He would be in good company there, given the presence of old colleagues Franco Baresi, Stefano Eranio, Alberigo Evani, Filippo Galli, Sebastiano Rossi and Giovanni Stroppa in the club's coaching ranks.

Eye on Athens
First, though, there is the present and the goal of collecting a fifth European Champion Clubs' Cup winner's medal. "I think we have a good chance of going all the way to the final in Athens," he declared this week. Milan have scored only eight goals in seven matches in the competition but their defensive record augurs well, the Celtic tie bringing a fourth clean sheet. "Looking at our performance at Celtic, we are very confident for the return. We did not suffer, we played quite well and we will soon have players back from injury," added the veteran, whose efforts on his 100th appearance in the revamped competition have certainly helped put the last eight within the Rossoneri's reach.

He can't retire yet we still need his services and we need them pretty bad sad.gif I hate to say this but i think he shouldn't be allowed to retire. Not yet until we have established a defence. The stupid bald man took his time before he actually realised that the defence is getting old. he should have bought some young talent much earlier. 4 years ago would have been nice instead of now hoping that maldini and nesta will pull miracles like they did back in the day.

Milan suffer Maldini blow
Monday 12 March, 2007

Milan have suffered a severe blow, as captain Paolo Maldini will be sidelined for at least six weeks after damaginig his meniscus.

The Rossonero, who celebrated his 600th Serie A appearance in Sunday’s derby defeat to Inter, might need to undergo surgery after the problem in his left knee deteriorated recently.

The former Italy international, in his 23rd season at Milan, has been suffering with knee problems for some time, fuelling speculation that he might end his extraordinary career at the end of the current term.

Maldini, 38, is expected to undergo additional scans on Monday, although it seems likely that the defender will need to be operated on and is set for a six-week stop.

Reports suggest that the player could be treated by Doctor Marc Martens, an orthopaedics specialist who already operated on him last season.

The legendary stopper, who has not yet decided what he will do after hanging up his boots, has won seven Scudetti with the Rossoneri and 126 caps for the Nazionale over 14 years, an all-time Italy record.

Maldini 'fit for Bayern clash'
Saturday 17 March, 2007

Specialists have told Paolo Maldini he could be ready for the first leg of the quarter-final with Bayern Munich.

The Milan captain suffered a new left knee setback during the Milan derby and there were fears he could require surgery for the persistent problem.

However, the club website announced he had visited specialist Professor Marc Martens in Belgium and that an operation would not be necessary.

The medic recommended continuing with physiotherapy to solve the issue and, although “the situation will be monitored daily,” it’s believed Maldini can be back within six weeks.

The defender can therefore be ready for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on April 3.

Alessandro Nesta is expected to return this weekend after several months out with a shoulder injury, while Serginho is also close to a comeback following a groin strain.

Maldini's final ambition

Friday, 13 April 2007

by John Atkin
from Munich

Depending on who you believe, the secret to longevity might be a good wife, a lack of stress, red meat or even gin. Yet as AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini weighs up the prospect of a ninth UEFA Champions League semi-final, the 38-year-old is keen to put a different slant on things.

German confidence
A 2-0 victory against FC Bayern München saw the Rossoneri claim a last-four date with Manchester United FC, though the prospect had appeared decidedly bleak a week earlier. A late equaliser by Daniel Van Buyten at the San Siro had earned Bayern a 2-2 draw to put the Bundesliga side in the box seat for the second leg. It inspired one German television channel to bill the decider as "Die Nacht Der Bayern" (The night of Bayern), but this confidence was to prove unfounded. After weathering an early storm, Clarence Seedorf and Filippo Inzaghi scored and a stellar defensive display orchestrated by Maldini saw them through.

'Great mentality'
"I approached the match in my usual positive way," Maldini said. "We knew we needed a win, but this team is blessed by players with a great mentality; they prove that every time. Now it is Manchester United - I think they were probably hoping to meet Bayern." The ashen look on the face of the attendant Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the match at the Fußball Arena München suggested that assumption might well have some grounding. The United manager has good reason to fear the Italian side, who ended his team's campaign in the last 16 two seasons ago thanks to 1-0 wins, home and away.

'Not scared'
Sir Alex had borne a very different appearance 24 hours earlier as his charges routed Milan's Serie A rivals AS Roma 7-1. Not since Juventus lost 7-0 to Austrian champions Wiener SC in 1958 had an Italian side conceded so many goals in one match in the competition. Maldini is confident his team-mates will provide a sterner test. "Manchester United have grown in strength over the past few years, and Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are extremely impressive," he conceded. "It will be a difficult match, played at a great tempo. But we are not scared and we will go there in high spirits. What makes us strong is our great mentality, our determination. We are always ready when it counts."

Maldini name
Milan have been crowned European champions six times, and only once has there not been a Maldini in their ranks. Paolo's father Cesare was part of the victorious 1963 European Champion Clubs' Cup team while the current incarnation has collected four winners' medals - in 1989, 1990, 1994 and 2003 – during an unparalleled 23-year spell at the San Siro. Such is his legend that when he does hang up his boots the No3 shirt will be retired unless one of his sons plays for the club. Ominously for rivals hoping to see the back of the Maldini clan, Paolo's eldest child Christian, 13, is already on the Rossoneri's books. It is surely no accident that the Maldini name is an anagram of "di Milan" (of Milan).

'I love the atmosphere'
Maldini is not looking to bow out just yet, however, and has postponed much-needed surgery on a troublesome knee injury until the summer as he goes in pursuit of more silverware. But having won so much, what drives his ambitions for more? "I keep playing because I love the atmosphere," said the former Italy captain. "To play just one more semi-final on an English ground, with the atmosphere we will face there and the possibility of reaching another final gives me the strength to keep going."

'Very proud'
Any "possibility" of a final has become a virtual probability for Maldini over the years, and until last season's defeat by FC Barcelona, he had never lost a last-four fixture. "This is yet another [European Cup] semi-final for me, my ninth. It went well seven times and I hope I will be able to make it to eight. This time we have qualified as the only non-English team, and in the last 20 years we have always been there; it makes me feel very proud. We have been somewhere near the top of the pile for years, ever since 1988."

'In our grasp'
Maldini had made his Milan debut three years previously, against Udinese Calcio in January 1985, with the dawn of his career on the horizon. Two decades on he is eager for one last showpiece final – something that looked highly unlikely when the Rossoneri began their campaign seven months ago in the aftermath of the match-fixing scandal. "Last summer this target looked almost impossible, and now it is in our grasp," said Maldini. If the past 20 years have taught us anything it is that when Milan get a tentative hold on something, they tend to make it count.

Just found the following on a BBC message board:

Tonight 38 years old Paolo Maldini will play his 983rd official football game in all competitions, his 1st one was in serie A on the 20th January 1985: 16 days before the birth of C.Ronaldo and 9 months before the birth of W.Rooney !!!
I think this little fact is amazing: doesn't matter who you will support tonight and doesn't matter how do you think he will cope with players so much younger than him.... I believe is a legend and just want to pay my tribute to one of the greatest defenders ever, always respected from every supporter, even from an Inter one like myself.

One More Season, Confirms Maldini

AC Milan skipper Paolo Maldini has confirmed that he wants to play for one more season before hanging up his boots.

The Rossoneri legend admitted, however, that it would depend on how he shaped up after a pending knee surgery.

"I will continue next season," said Maldini, who missed yesterday's fabulous 3-0 win over Manchester United.

"After the final, I will have a [knee] operation, and I hope to be able to play what would be my final European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup [after winning the Champions League]."

The 38-year-old had admitted yesterday evening that he would have gone in for an immediate operation had Milan been knocked out, but that he will now focus on getting fit for the Athens date.

The operation will now take place in the week following the final, and barring any complications, he will be ready for the start of the new season, and to continue his magical career.

He will make it a record eighth Champions League final appearance in three weeks, and could chalk up his fifth trophy. He won with Milan in 1989, 90, 94 and 2003, and was on the losing side in 1993, 95 and 2005.

THE CAPTAIN’S LAURELS

Paolo Maldini reached his 600th Serie A game in this March’s derby and Catania marked his 601st, what an amazing champion and captain he has been and continues to be

Paolo Maldini played his 601st game in Serie A with Milan against Catania. The captain already celebrated the big 600 in March on March 11 of this year (this number includes the UEFA play-off on May 23, 1987 against Sampdoria in Turin). It’s a breathtaking number for the record books. If we set aside the play-off from 1987, which was played after the regular season, yesterday was Maldini’s 600th match. The 600th match of a great champion and a great captain. A hero unlike any other, our very own Paolo Maldini.

Out of those 600 Serie A games played by Maldini there have been 315 victories, 179 draws, 106 losses, with 52,555 minutes played and 28 goals scored.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS OF THE MEMORABLE MOMENTS OF MALDINI IN SERIE A:

Maldini – A Born Winner

After triumphing for the fifth time in the Champions League, Maldini stated he wants to play the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, admitting he’ll go on for at least one more year, despite his left leg is not that fit anymore.

He was supposed to retire at the end of the current season, but it looks like he’s decided there is still plenty of time to think about hanging his boots. The Milan captain has discovered the elixir of life, which can be summarized in only one sweet and merry word: victory…

In Italy to be the offspring of a famous person, being it a journalist or a physician or a professor, means very often that you can have an easy life, following the path already set by your parent.

I’m obviously grossly generalizing, but it’s not that uncommon that the son of a law professor begins a career at university or the daughter on an actress starts performing as well.

Unfortunately some of the lucky children get the job mainly because of their illustrious parents, not for their own merits, but it’s not always like that.

Paolo Maldini is one of those exceptions, as he started playing football just because he liked it and he had a good potential – to say the least...

His father Cesare Maldini, who went on to Coach the Azzurri, was a key player in Nereo Rocco’s rock-like defence back in the sixties.

He won only a European Cup, in 1963, when a double by Brazilian striker Josè Altafini, now a well known commentator for Italian Sky, did the trick and Milan defeated Eusebio’s mighty Benfica at the Old Wembley Stadium – the one with the towers, not the Blairian arch...

Maldini junior has got a far better record in the European competitions, having won five European Cup – or Champions League, I should say… But honestly, and we’re sure Cesarone will not mind, it’s not only a question of trophies. It’s a question of qualities.

Paolo is more talented than his father, who trained him in the unlucky – for Italy – France 1998 World Cup. He’s got a better technique, a good ability at scoring goals and he’s faster paced.

He’s also more of a marathon man than his daddy who retired when he was 35, and more versatile, as he can play wing-back and centre-back.

Maldini senior could perform as a full back and that was it. In fact Paolo has set the all time record for Serie A, playing the incredible amount of 600 games, to which he added 28 goals.

In his career he’s only performed for Milan, while Cesare started in his home town with Triestina and finished wearing a Granata shirt in Turin.

Having spent 23 seasons in the same club, Maldini is definitely a rare bird in the world of sports, especially now, in the “corporate football era” where players are promiscuous and clubs seen with a less passionate feeling of belonging with millions in play.

Before leaving the national team, in the aftermath of another national tragedy, the Korea defeat in 2002, he collected 126 caps (another all time record for Italy), hitting the back of the net seven times.

Those figures speak for themselves, even though we could go on mentioning a few more records (eight Champions League finals, 74 appearances for Italy wearing the captain arm band, seven Scudetti, etc.).

His Serie A debut took place in a cold January afternoon, in Udine and the Milan Coach at that time, former fifties Swedish star Nils Liedholm, had no doubt: Maldini was glory bound.

It was 1985 and Maldini was only 16 – he’s turning 39 next June – but you could actually tell he was more than a good prospect.

What at that time Liddas – as Liedholm, now a much respected wine maker, is nicknamed – didn’t know was that AC Milan were also destined to shine in Italy and Europe like no other club would do.

The following two decades were going to be the most successful of the Rossoneri history. Paolino Maldini was there, playing in the back with the likes of Baresi and Stam, Tassotti and Costacurta, Nesta and Panucci.

He was, actually he still is, a living advert for our sport. His tackles raised to a legendary status, his quick runs on the left side of the pitch are simply memorable, while his fair play has a few equals in the rest of the world.

Unfortunately he shares the same destiny of other former Milan team mates, like Massaro, Donadoni, Baresi, Albertini and a few more: he’s never won a World Cup.

He lost a final on penalties in 1994, when he had to comfort Baresi, who had missed from the penalty spot and was crying like a baby.

To be precise he was also defeated by France in the Euro 2000 last act, but that doesn’t hurt as much as the World Cup failures.

One more stain on the nearly immaculate career of Maldini could be the absence of his name on the list of the Ballon d’or winners.

But I don’t think that’s too important, firstly because in Italy that trophy is a bit overrated and secondly because Maldini’s name is well present in the history of football anyway, with or without a Ballon d’or making a fine show on his bookshelf.

Maybe some of the sweetest words on Maldini marvellous career were uttered a few days ago by Materazzi, a symbol of his cross town rivals.

“It’s a pity Paolo, the best defender in the last two decades, hasn’t won the World Cup. I’m really sorry for him. I actually managed to lift that cup and he didn’t, it’s incredible”.

Maldini is not the only superstar without a World Cup success. That club has got a few illustrious members, like Best, Di Stefano and Cruijff, just to name a few.

But you cannot achieve everything in your life, can you? At least he can put a tape on and watch a European Cup final. He has plenty of tapes to choose from and a new one as well.

It says 2007, V for Vendetta, V for victory…and who would argue that the veteran has earned a place not just in the hearts of Rossoneri or Azzurri fans, but in true football fans' hearts wherever they live…forever.

It's in today's Gazzetta (print edition). I can't find the article in the online version - they don't always put the gossipy stuff on the website.

I usually read on this forum, dst and others calling Maldini god .. But I only understood what they ment until I actually saw this comp. Watch for the opposition, when they shake his hand before the game(s) .. Look at how they look at him in awe.

I bet you, if this was in the time ancient Greece, where there was a god for everything, Maldini would be the god of football king.gif

I WANT TO BE THERE

I prepared myself to be there, like it should be, to always be there and not for some games. Paolo Maldini talks about himself before starting to run again and the last consultation with Professor Martens.

MILAN – Last night, connected to Studio Milan, Jean Pierre Meersseman, with regards to ‘his’ argument, spoke freely: “Paolo? It’s going very well. His knee has recovered impressively, the possibility of recovering Paolo at hundred percent is very high.”

Paolo to Milan is always the captain. Yesterday afternoon, under the rain of Milanello, Maldini spoke to Milan Channel: “I’m fine. The knee is not swollen. I should start running again towards the end of August and after a further consultation with Professor Martens in Belgium, I should start training again with my team-mates. According to the program, I could return on the pitch towards the end of September. Obviously, to be available for that date, everything should go well from today onwards and this is my hope. I went under the knife to be available always, not only for some games. If then everything should go like last year, I would be very happy, because apart from the problem to the right knee towards the end of the season, I did not have a problem with the right knee which was operated in the summer of 2006.”

“I think,” he continued, “That the preparation went very well. I saw a lot of effort put in by my team-mates and our coach is happy. In the Trofeo Berlusconi we played a good game, now we have a week to try and find some velocity which will be useful to be ready at Genoa and to prepare well the Super Cup. Sevilla? They started before, they had less holidays and they are much ahead in the state of form. Maybe this will weigh a bit later on in the season, but right now they’re fine. However, we are the European Champions, we must present ourselves at Montecarlo as favourites and it should be that way. For the next season, Champions League, League and World Club Cup are our big objectives. The first two are long-term tournaments, whereas the third one will be decided all in a week, but from our side, after three defeats, we want to return to be the World Champions for club level. In the league? My favourites are Inter, Roma and Milan. The Italian Super Cup did not change anything. Roma in a direct match can beat anyone, nothing extraordinary happened.”

God help me, I may have to think nice thoughts about a Merda player.

Here's an extract from an interview with Luis Figo that originally appeared in Corriere dello Sport (http://www.goal.com/it/articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=428991):

(This is his entire answer to the question).

[At the end of the season, you and Maldini will end your careers. What will football lose?

"Maldini is number 1, the point of reference for all footballers for his career, for his victories, for how he behaves both on and off the pitch." ]

Maldini's retirement may come before Figo's, as soon as January, if http://www.tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=68229 is to believed! I don't rule it out... it can happen. maybe Maldini carried on playing just for the CWC title? Depends on which timezone you're in. The reports were in the Thursday morning Corriere. Japan is several timezones ahead of Italy (8, I think), and the team has had its training session for the day (see my note on that in the news section). So the interview in which Il Capitano denied his imminent retirement most likely took place either before or after the interview. For those who don't know, Studio Sport is a Mediaset program (and Mediaset = Silvio Berlusconi). It's generally far more reliable for Milan news than Corriere, which is generally reliable for...lining birdcages.

Maldini to draw career to a close

AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the season, ending one of the most decorated careers in recent times.

World triumph
The 39-year-old defender revealed his decision following Milan's 4-2 triumph against CA Boca Juniors to lift the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan. Following the game, which resulted in his 26th honour with Milan, he said: "This victory is so great because it's really hard to play with a great team like Milan when you are 39 years old like me.

No regrets
"This club have always given me the possibility to play for important trophies and today I feel very satisfied with what I have done. I can quit playing without any regrets or sorrow. I have had all the things I could ask for in my career," added Italy's most capped international, with 126 appearances to his name prior to his last outing in 2002.

Glittering career
Maldini has lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup five times – during a career that began with his debut in 1985 – the most recent of which being last May's 2-1 win against Liverpool FC in Athens. Now in his 23rd campaign, he has appeared a record 604 times in Serie A, scoring 28 goals and winning the Italian title on seven occasions. He also won five UEFA Super Cups, one Italian Cup, four Italian Super Cups and three world club titles. Milan will retire Maldini's No3 shirt at the end of this season but it could be seen again if one of his sons makes the senior side and his eldest is in the Rossoneri's youth squad.

Ancelotti praise
"I'm proud of being part of a club that always win something important," Maldini continued. "I'll quit playing next June but until that moment I will enjoy every match I play even if I feel pain in my knee, but I won't postpone my retirement." Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti added: "Maldini has shown what a great champion he is today. He is 39 and has returned to play on the left flank without problems. This shows his personality. Players like him give confidence to the whole team."

Milan's legendary symbol is in his last 6 months before retirement. He reflects on several things:

"It's a great feat to play till the age of 39, and what is even greater is to play at the level that is demanded at AC Milan. A club that has always given me chance after chance to in playing for the important tournaments. Now I feel very satisfied to be closing my career after 23 years with Milan, a club which has not let me doubt one day of something I have done or not done."

Maldini wants Milan future

Paolo Maldini has set out his plans after retirement. “I cannot ask for more than I have had from my career. I would like to keep working with Milan.”

The legendary defender made his Serie A debut for the club in 1985 and will hang up his boots at the end of this season.

“My youngest son thought I had already stopped playing when we went on our Christmas holiday to Miami. The eldest knows what’s going on and would like me to carry on, but… I love this sport, training and working with a team, but I cannot ask for more than I have had from my career.”

He has won every trophy imaginable with the Rossoneri and hopes he will remain a symbol of the side even after retirement.

“I am not afraid of this step, as I had plenty of time to think about it. I will certainly have to change my day to day habits and find a different type of work. I will miss the daily training sessions and experiencing things in a group of 50 people. Perhaps I’ll collapse completely!

“I would like to continue living in my city and hopefully working with Milan, putting my experience at the club’s disposal. I think there is room for many options, as the experience of former players who competed at the top level can be useful.

“We’ll decide together with Adriano Galliani and President Silvio Berlusconi. I would like to have an active role, though, and not just a ceremonial position.” biggrin.gif king.gif king.gif

In a curious twist of fate, he made his debut on January 20, 1985 against Udinese and will repeat that fixture on January 20, 2008.

“It is one of the many strange coincidences in my career, but naturally it won’t end there. It will be a special day, as the debut against Udinese was a turning point for me and Milan have always been my anchor.”

A different Milan player will receive his Serie A debut this weekend against Napoli, as Alexandre Pato is expected to start.

“He has great technique and a remarkable ability to move the ball from his right foot to his left and shoot in a matter of seconds. He has extraordinary physical presence for an 18-year-old. The important thing is to play and in these six months he has never been able to play a real game, so that did not help his integration.”

Pato joined the club in the summer, but because he was still 17 when the summer transfer window closed he was not eligible for official competition until January.

There are rumors floating around the Italian press (including ControCampo) suggesting that Maldini might be asked to be one of the three older players for the Azzurri for the 2008 summer olympics.

(And it's a lovely picture!)

Maldini's ambition after 23 years

Paolo Maldini comes full circle with the 23rd anniversary of his Serie A debut, but still has ambitions. “I want my swansong to be the Champions League Final.”

“Nils Liedholm means a lot to be, because he gave me my debut and taught me so much on a professional and human level,” said the Milan legend.

Liedholm was on the bench when he let the precocious young defender on to the field on January 20, 1985 against Udinese.

“As for Carlo Ancelotti, I was his fan when he was playing for Parma alongside my father, then he was my opponent, teammate and eventually my Coach.”

In a bizarre twist of fate, Maldini marks the 23rd anniversary of that day by facing the Friulani again this Sunday, January 20, 2008. ohmy.gif

“Udinese are a team who play good football and have many different options in attack. I noticed they don’t tend to start matches very well, but always have the strength to get back on their feet.

“Antonio Di Natale is one of the best Italian talents out there right now and I think Udinese are a direct competitor for a Champions League spot next season.”

It is an opportunity to look back over his career, but also forward as Maldini won’t hang up his boots until June.

“In the past 23 years football has changed a great deal. Now every game is live on television, the style of the sport is far quicker and more physical. Training regimes are continually developing. This sport still gives me special emotions.

“I have not yet decided what to do at the end of my career. I hope to continue with this club that has given me so much. I’d need more experience and to go around the world to become a director, but I’d prefer to stay in my home town.”

Maldini may be pushing 40, but he still has ambitions for his final six months as a player.

“The greatest memories are certainly the eight Champions League Finals I was able to play. It seemed like a dream to win it in Athens last year, but life is made of dreams and I’d like to reach the Final in Moscow this May. Why not try again this year?”

The full-back spent his entire career with the Rossoneri jersey on his back, so does he regret not attempting another overseas experience?

“I never felt the need because I’ve always had the good fortune to play in my home town where my father was crowned Champion of Europe. If I really had to change, then I would’ve gone to Spain,” explained Paolo.

“In the moments of difficulty I had my family and friends around me in Milan to lean on. For a foreign player who is overseas it must be more complicated to get through the tough times. My advice is not to read the newspapers.”

Perhaps his one regret is retiring from international duty before Italy’s 2006 World Cup triumph.

“I can’t complain. Some journeys went all the way to their ultimate destination, others did not, such as the my Nazionale career.

“In any case, my experience has been wonderful and full of satisfaction. I had everything with Milan, including a goal in the Champions League Final! What am I still missing? The Final in Moscow.”

Liedholm was on the bench when he let the precocious young defender on to the field on January 20, 1985 against Udinese.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Maldini marks the 23rd anniversary of that day by facing the Friulani again this Sunday, January 20, 2008. ohmy.gif

Sometimes during my lunch break, I'll take a look at the 606 message boards on bbc.com. It's sometimes interesting to see what people are talking about there.

I came across http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A31726820 article today. Given how critical people frequently are of Italian football and Italian players, this piece came as a very nice surprise.

My point, exactly. I mean if you have the wrong pose, you can make people like Heidi Klum and Angeline Jolie look ugly. All in all, spoiled my day when I saw that link. Anyway, I was looking around my hard disk, and saw some pages on Paolo. Here are some extracts: cool.gif

QUOTE
* Best known social past time: A meal in a good restaurant with family or friends, and then an early bed.
* The Giorgio Armani story: When the fashion designer attended one of the Italian team's training sessions prior to its departure for USA 94, he was asked if he would have liked to use any of the Italian squad as models for his clothes range. His unhesitating reply was inevitable --- "Maldini".
Excerpts from "Maldini, too good to be true" by Paddy Agnew:
* Milan and Italy left-back Paolo Maldini is almost too good to be true. Successful, glamorous, good looking and with estimated annual earnings in excess of 1.5 million pounds, he is not only one of Italian soccer's undisputed world class talents but also highly respected and liked within the Italian soccer community.
* The problem with Paolo... is that he's faultless. Maldini is a model pro. He is a model, yes, in his professional and serious attitude, in the fact that he is not a player to cause problems for team mates, his coach, his club, or indeed for himself. He is, however, much more than just a model professional. He is God's greatest gift to the pressurised team coach.
* Nonetheless, the point had been made. Class is no water, as Italians say, and Paolo Maldini has lots of it.

I was flicking through some forums and found some discussions on Il Capitano. I think every single one of them was positive

Here are some comments

QUOTE
In the rather fetid pit that is Italian football, Maldini has been a shining light for years now - one of football's great ambassadors and one who will be deeply missed in the game.

QUOTE
Absolute legend - saw him play twice at the San Siro, against Roma for the title and against Barca in the Champions League. Even in his late 30's, and with no pace left, he was there marshalling the defence, and if you looked carefully he did not run after the ball but ran to where he knew the striker wanted to take it! Experience, poise, grace and talent in the most magnificent defender of my lifetime.

QUOTE
A true embodiment of the word LEGEND, and a true testament to what the term 'world class' means. Many salivate over performances of Premier League players today and label them the legends and world class, Maldini has played the best and beat them, from Maradona to Ronaldo. A true role model for not just budding footballers, but human beings as well.

All comments from English people btw

QUOTE
Paolo Maldini bids 'arrivederci Milan'
By Tony Francis

QUOTE
For a modest chap who prefers mum's pasta to Carluccio's finest, Paolo Maldini made quite a splash when he stepped into Serie A 23 years ago. He, more than Gunnar Nordahl, Gianni Rivera or Ruud Gullit, became the symbol of AC Milan. Not bad for a full-back, but then Italy reinvented the breed.

So what kind of man is this who can dispossess Diego Maradona and force Zinedine Zidane to seek refuge on the other side of the park? Maldini shrugs his shoulders as if to say: "Just doing my job." His acceptance speech after winning World Soccer magazine's player of the year award in 1996 went something like: "What, me? I'm a defender."

Most women would risk their long-term relationships for half an hour with him. He's impossibly good-looking, even by Italian standards; he's captain of the world club champions; a euro-billionaire and a male model. If pushed, he'll host your disco.

All right, where's the catch? Cocaine problem? Serial philanderer? Well, no, actually. Paolo Maldini is like one of those infuriating swots who wins all the school prizes and stars in the nativity play. Blemish-free. By his mid-teens he was DJ at a local radio station, where he fell in love with a stunning young model of Italo-Venezuelan origin called Adriana Fossa, later to become his wife. Italian footballers don't do ugly.

Giorgio Armani desperately wanted Maldini to model his clothes when he kitted out the Azzurri for the 1998 World Cup. The player declined. With a more acquisitive temperament and a pushy partner he'd have out-Beckhamed David Beckham by now. Can't you just see him as the new Marcello Mastroianni in a remake of La Dolce Vita?

As it is, Maldini is content to be a legend in his own dressing room. Even that can be embarrassing. He was surprised that an English journalist would think him important enough to write home about. Surely his forthcoming retirement didn't deserve the Sinatra treatment? On Saturday he played his 1,000th game for club and country when he came on as substitute in Milan's 0-0 draw at Parma, yet when I reminded him that he was the longest-serving one-club man in history, he had no idea. Maybe he is as institutionalised in his way as Rudolf Hess was in Spandau Prison. Or maybe AC Milan really is the greatest place on God's earth.

"Fantastic facilities," says Ray Wilkins, a team-mate of Maldini in the mid-Eighties. "When you consider that Milanello, the training camp, was probably built half a century before Arsenal's and Manchester United's you realise how advanced they are. The players' restaurant is the best in Milan."

If it hadn't been for the flashing smile, eyes the colour of Colombian coffee beans and that trademark central parting, the world's most decorated footballer would have been indistinguishable from the tifosi waiting for a glimpse of him at Milanello. The crumpled jeans, lived-in leather bolero and workaday trainers were regulation issue. At least they were designed to look like that. Apart from his collection of 100 pairs of jeans, most things about Paolo Maldini are understated: his outfit; his public persona; his football and his lifestyle.

He says: "There's nothing unusual about serving the same employer for 23 years." That might have been true in a Scunthorpe iron foundry but not turn-of-the-millennium football, where transfer bonuses buy you that villa in Dubai and loyalty is an indication that you were breast-fed too long.

In any case, he has been at Milan for 29 years if you include his apprenticeship. I asked Maldini whether he had been tempted in all that time to join Manchester United, Real Madrid or another big European club. "Not once," he replied unhesitatingly. "I have great respect for the Premier League, but why leave Milan? I've got everything I want here. Il Milan e la mia famiglia." We haven't heard an Englishman utter those sentiments since Pongo Waring was banging in goals for Aston Villa between the wars.

Maldini resisted my invitation to speak English, claiming he hadn't progressed beyond his aunt's pen turning up on his uncle's desk. I knew that was a porky because of a television interview I did with him during Euro '96. But I hadn't come to Milanello to argue, so Italian it was. I heard about his voluntary 30 per cent pay cut when the Milan president Silvio Berlusconi was feeling the pinch, and how he agreed to halve his salary from €5?million to €2.5?million for this, his final season, knowing that his troublesome knees would reduce his availability. "Despite the occasional pain," he said, "I still get pleasure from training and playing. Just as important, I still enjoy the camaraderie in the dressing room." Then he gazed out of the window at the manicured lawns of Milanello, edged with distant, snowcapped mountains and sighed: "I shall miss this place."

Why did he stay on after winning the World Club Cup against Boca Juniors last December? Wasn't that a more natural "out" than his 40th birthday in June? He replied: "They asked me to."
Milan have a habit of looking after their ageing gems.

His father, Cesare, who captained Milan to their first European Cup title in 1963 and coached his son in the Italian national side from 1996 to 1998, told me that Sir Alex Ferguson spoke to Paolo when he was already in his thirties about the possibility of a lucrative swansong at Old Trafford. Paolo barely flinched.

Said Cesare: "He grew up at AC Milan. You can't change your birth sign." With five Champions League medals and goodness knows how many scudettos in his cabinet, who cares about being institutionalised? Curiously, in 126 appearances for Italy, he never won a title. Brazil beat them on penalties in that mind-numbing 1994 World Cup final and France squeaked past them in the European Championship final six years later.

He says: "They were my biggest disappointments. It's funny that as soon as I retired from international football, Italy won the World Cup."

It's a tribute, not to say a bloody miracle, that he's navigated paparazzi-infested waters and endured almost daily intrusions into his life without the merest hint of scandal. Not even a boozy night out. What's his problem?

"My father instilled in me the need to behave correctly on and off the pitch. I don't remember him as a player but he coached me as a boy and taught me how to be a man." He was evidently a good student. According to Wilkins: "Not only is Paolo a lovely fella, he also had the intelligence and humility to handle any situation. They're vital qualities for a superstar."

Just when we thought it was safe, there's a third Maldini in the Milan academy. And wouldn't you know, Paolo's 11-year-old son, Christian, is a full-back, too. I wondered about a possible repeat of last month's episode at Inter, where Robert Mancini gave his 17-year-old son, Filippo, a first-team debut in the Coppa Italia?

Paolo smiled: "That won't happen with Christian because I have no intention of becoming a coach. If he makes it, I'll be there to support him as a proud father." He continued: "I would like to stay with the club in some capacity but that's still to be decided."

The dynasty, you suspect, will go on and on. It could have been so different. Paolo was a Juventus fan at school.

Il Capitano gave the interview before today's training session. http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=63461

He talked about Roma, about the Empoli game, and about the team's improving condition.

At the end of the interview, he said this:

Riguardo al mio futuro lascio ancora aperte le porte, prima pensavo di essere convinto al cento per cento di smettere a fine stagione, ma ultimamente ho ricevuto molti attestati di stima e insieme alla mia condizione fisica, che è migliore rispetto a quella dello scorso anno in questo periodo della stagione, mi hanno fatto pensare. Devo quindi ancora decidere cosa fare del mio futuro.

Maldini may play on

QUOTE
Milan defender Paolo Maldini is rethinking his plan to hang his boots up at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old had announced that this campaign would be his last as a player, but he now admits that he is having second thoughts.

“Would I continue to play? I am thinking about it, even if I wake up every morning with a different idea,”
Maldini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Seeing as the club and my teammates have asked me, I will consider my options carefully.

“I’m feeling good and I am back playing, even on the wing. I am back in the Milan equation.”

These are testing times for the world champions who are four points away from Champions League qualification rivals Fiorentina.

The Diavolo were booed and whistled during last weekend’s defeat against Atalanta and Maldini doesn’t believe they deserved that reception.

“I can’t stand this whistling at the first error,” he raged. “It is understandable at the end of the game, but from the start it really isn’t right and it doesn’t help. I wouldn’t do it if I were a fan.”

(from acmilan.com's english language page)

MILANELLO – These are the declarations of the Rossoneri’s captain, Paolo Maldini, at the microphones of Milan Channel, today at the Rossoneri's sports centre of Milanello:

Captain, there are still five games left and after the match against Cagliari the San Siro jinx has been broken…
“Apart from the games which we play at home or away, we must only think to move forward and give the best in these last five league games. From our part we can only give our best commitment each time we go on the pitch and with regards reaching the fourth place, we can only hope in a slip by Fiorentina which is now not thinkable, but Milan still has the same duty to try and win all the next five league games."

With the brace that Filippo Inzaghi scored in Turin, he reached twelve goals in official games this season. Do you believe that he deserves a place in Roberto Donadoni's team for the European Championship in June?
“There are many players who are aspiring for a place in Euro 2008: Del Piero, Borriello, Pippo too…These are not easy choices and I would not want to be in the position of the national team coach whose job is difficult due to these choices. In general I believe that Donadoni must aim on those players who have been a group in these last two years during the qualifications, then, also due to the last minute physical conditions, the coach can complete the list of the called-up players.”

In these days there has been a lot of talk about the interest of many teams towards Gattuso. What do you think?
“I read on the newspapers that there are many requests for Rino, but I believe that there always have been. There are no doubts on the intentions of the club to hold him at Milan and not even Rino wants to leave.”

Often it is written and said about a Milan side which needs to be revived lately. Your judgement?
“I don’t believe that there is a Milan which needs to be revived. This team has won a prestigious competition like the World Club Cup just last December, not twenty years ago. Therefore I believe that we have to talk about continuity of this group and not re-birth."

Posted by: kurtsimonw Apr 17 2008, 10:41 PM

That's an interesting one - Pippo for Italy. He doesn't play often, but when he does, he seems to score.

What he most probably means is that:

- Some players need to pack their bags.
- Some will need to step up their game or look for other less profile clubs.
- And some need to warm the reserve seats more often than they do so now.
- We need to bring in a whole bunch of new reinforcements.
- But the base still needs to stay the same.

Kaka aside, you just can't phase out players like Nesta, Seedorf, Pirlo, Gattuso, etc. when we know that they still have a good 3-4 years left in them. Are quality, new players needed? Absolutely. But I'm not sure wholesale changes are necessary yet. And this is what the management seems to think (the management being Berlusconi, Galliani, Leonardo, Ancelloti and Paolo too, among others). cool.gif

We've had two consecutive crap (transfer) seasons - can't quite see this extended to three. We'll get in some good players, some changes, for sure, come this August. Even if we get one good players for each position (Keeper, Defense, Mid, Attack), plus a random Ukranian or out-of-form-and-favor Brazilian thrown in for good measure, we'll be ready to challange on almost all fronts - what with our improved bench strength. Fingers crossed. unsure.gif

Arrivederci Maldini?

Milan’s Paolo Maldini has picked up an injury in training, which may end the veteran stopper’s season and bring the curtain down on his career.

The Rossoneri need all the experience they can get with just five games left to turn their season around.

However, it seems that 39-year-old stopper Maldini could be watching the remainder of the campaign from the stands.

The Diavolo legend damaged his left thigh during yesterday’s training session and early tests show that the damage could be reasonably extensive.

There are fears that the problem could be enough to rule Maldini out of any of Milan’s remaining matches.

Should Maldini stand by his previous decision to hang up his boots at the end of the season, he may have played his final game in a glorious career. cry.gif

A homegrown talent, Maldini came through the Milan youth ranks and made his Serie A debut at just 16 back in January 1985.

He has since made 617 appearances for the club and has played more games in the top flight than any other active player.

Maldini To Be Awarded FIFA Order Of Merit
FIFA is to bestow the Order of Merit on AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, the Gazzetta dello Sport has revealed.

The FIFA Order of Merit is usually awarded to those who are considered to have made a significant contribution to football.

The prize is not necessarily just for footballers, as apart from the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and the only other Italian to have won the award so far, Dino Zoff, political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Henry Kissinger have also been recipients.

Maldini will become only the second Italian to win the award, following in the footsteps of 1982 World Cup-winning captain Dino Zoff.

The 39-year-old Maldini will receive the honour at the annual FIFA Congress in Sydney next month. The Milan captain is set to retire from football at the end of the season after a glorious career lasting almost a quarter-of-a-century.

He has won seven Scudetti, one Coppa Italia, five Italian Super Cups, five Champions League titles, five European Super Cups and three World Club Cups.

He is both Milan and Italy’s all-time appearance maker, and is regarded by some as the best defender in the history of the game.

Agree with you here. He should have won things when he was at the peak of his career, but all these organizations and their love for midfielder and strikers. Defenders and keepers never got their due for the amount of work they put in. Except for Fabio Cannavaro, who was a rare case because of Italy's victory in the 2006 World Cup. wink.gif

Here's what Il Capitano said before the San Siro Gentleman awards tonight (as reported by Mediaset Sport):

[Paolo Maldini has decided what to do next season, and it doesn't depend on CL qualification: 'There's nothing official because I don't have a contract, but there doesn't need to be one given that Galliani and I are in agreement. Let's say that I'm leaning toward deciding to continue and in a week I'll go to the team offices to discuss how to finish this debate.

As regards CL qualification, Maldini is honest: 'Not reaching CL qualifications would be a terrible disappointment but the question isn't over yet because we've seen how great the championship has been this year. The teams that have had less motivation have made the end of the season interesting. We hope Torino will do the same. It's certain that now our future is not in our hands.']

If Maldini stays its good for the dressing room as he is a natural leader and a calming person/ality

However, he should only do it if can play at a consistently high level every time he plays (once a week or whatever). He should not stay on for the sake of it, give a series of poor performance and be remembered for that (e.g. Vieri)

There's an interesting interview with Cesare Maldini on Tuttomercatoweb. http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/?action=read&id=104839

Here's what he said when asked if Il Capitano would play another year.

“Non chiedetemi niente sul futuro di mio figlio, anche per me è sempre stato oscuro. Con lui non parlo di questo. So solo che continua a giocare con lo stesso entusiasmo di sempre. Anzi visto che si deve riprendere dall’infortunio rimane ad allenarsi ancora, a Milanello fino all’8 giugno, mentre tutti gli altri sono in vacanza”.

[Don't ask me anything about my son's future, for me it's always been unclear. I don't talk about it with him. I only know that he continues to play with the same enthusiasm as ever. Given that he needs to recover from his injury, he's continuing training at Milanello until June 8, while the other players are all on vacation.]

Not official news by any means, but if he's training on his own to get over the injury, it would seem to me that he plans on playing next year.

Yeah, most likely it is fabricated but there may be a hint of truth in it. Maldini is seen as the last of the "golden generation" so if he were to retire then a percieved new era would begin. I am against it but with alot of emphasis on PR and marketing it isnt a completely far-fetched idea

Regardless its most like a tabloid article

It's a principle question says the article, Paolo wants to be treated as a wanted player not as a veteran to whom the club is doing a favour and prefers to retire!
