Porto back in Champions League

Porto have been reinstated to the UEFA Champions League despite an ongoing investigation into the alleged bribery of referees.

The Portuguese champions were told they would not be allowed to enter the 2008/09 competition earlier this month but Uefa have now confirmed they will feature.

"They will be able to take part in the competition next season," said Uefa spokesman William Gaillard.

"Any sanctions brought against them (by Uefa) will apply from the following season."

Porto were thrown out of the Champions League after being found guilty of bribing referees in two games in 2003/04.

They were also deducted six points but still won the league by a big margin.

Porto contested the decision and Uefa then overturned the suspension that was imposed by their own disciplinary body.

Uefa referred the decision back to the disciplinary body and, although the matter has not yet been resolved, Porto have been admitted back into European competition.

Former England boss Steve McClaren has agreed a two-year deal to manage Dutch side FC Twente.

"I'm delighted to be back in club management and looking forward to meeting staff and players," McClaren told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Dutch league and the Champions League qualifiers."

The chairman of FC Twente has previously admitted that some fans of the club are against the appointment.

"Ninety per cent of fans think why him? But he is used to working with top players," said Joop Munsterman.

Twente finished fourth last season to secure a place in the Champions League qualifiers for the first time.

"I noted from the first meeting with chairman Joop Munsterman and other people at the club that they were very co-operative," McClaren said.

"It's an exciting time for the club, they were very successful under Fred Rutten (now at Bundesliga side Schalke) and I cannot wait to start."

McClaren, who has had spells as Middlesbrough manager and number two to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has been out of the game since being sacked by England in November after failing to secure a place at Euro 2008.

The 47-year-old, who had been linked to the vacant manager's position at Premier League side Blackburn Rovers, also told the BBC that he sought the advice of former PSV Eindhoven and England boss Sir Bobby Robson before accepting the role.

"He also told me that FC Twente is a fantastic club and that I would feel at home.

"I am excited to be working again at a club that fits me well. I am looking forward to this new challenge."

BBC Radio 5 Live's Ian Dennis, who worked alongside McClaren during the Euro 2008 Championship, said: "I sensed his hunger and desire to get back into management.

"He is looking forward to the challenge. It is a shrewd move, an opportunity to rebuild his career away from these shores.

"He has taken advice from Sir Bobby Robson, who did exactly the same. Steve McClaren is fiercely ambitious and cannot wait to get started."

Twente need to qualify for the Champions League? God help them!

Well. I'm surprised. ABC (one of the 3 major US broadcast networks) is showing an MLS game live before they show the Euro finals live. Seeing football on ABC is...probably equivalent to seeing baseball on BBC. It's REALLY rare.

The game is DC United - LA Galaxy. At the half, DC lead LA 2-1. Landon Donovan is a [insert particularly naughty word here]. Elbowed a DC player inna face, then feigned injury and the DC player got a yellow. Football is not sexy in DC. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Full time: DC United 4 - 1 LA Galaxy.

I feel sorry for Ruud Gullit. LA's attack is halfway decent, but their defense is just...well, pitiful.

In good news for DC, Ben Olsen (DC's Gattuso equivalent) played the last few minutes. It's his first time playing since ankle surgery and he's hugely important to the team.

Panathinaikos is interest in Aimar! Damn, Pablito is one of my favorite players, he deserved better than an injury-plagued career! And now... the Greek league? I hope it does not happen!

Perhaps he wants to follow Rivaldo's footsteps? I don't know if anyone knows this but to tell you lot, although at 35-year old, he had 3 good seasons with Olympiakos and AEK Athens.
