All the Champions League talk here!

Posted by: dst Jun 18 2007, 06:49 PM

Can Milan become the first the team to win the Champions League two times in a row? Only with the right additions we could... but it's a weird trip... we'll see.

I would expect Chelsea to give everything to win it. They should be the most motivated team out of all!

Posted by: Jack Sparrow Jun 18 2007, 07:16 PM

Well no doubt after the disgrace of this season, the English teams will all be very motivated...

Chelsea..of course, then there's always Man U chasing the dream that was 1999. The Scousers are looking at the League Title this time I think.

I also think Inter will go all out. I read it behind the decision of Figo to stay on. To the extent Inter might even compromise on Serie A. Milan's victory this season has just been too much for them to take.

In Spain. If Capello stays, I bank on a Real assault on CL and by relation the transfer market. Otherwise they'll look to mostly defend the title. Barca will of course look to regain lost pride, but I think their downward spiral has become. Now above all Barca needs a no-sh!t manager like Capello.

In Germany, I guess the clubs will all look to acquit themselves well in Europe, but barring Bremen, I see no one make a concerted push.

Posted by: LaPalma Jun 18 2007, 08:13 PM

IMO Real is the most motivated team. They're fans want to see them on top of Europe again. They'll do everything to win it.
I feel like Chelsea is a bit depressed after this years failure. But...you never know.
I don't see Inter as serious contenders for the title with their current squad. With Figo 3 or 4 years younger...yes. But IMO they lack the creative abilities in midfield.
German teams...well, I think Stuttgart can surprise everyone. They've got some awesome youngster like Gomez, Hilbert, Tasci and some more. Maybe it's enough for the quarterfinal. Bremen, can make it to the last 16 IMO. Frings, Diego, Mertesacker, Borowski and Naldo are class. IMO the best team in Germany...even better than the new Bayern squad.

I wouldn't exactly call it a disgrace to reach the semi finals. Would you call our campaign last season (05/06) a disgrace? I certainly wouldn't.

I think there's only 1 from 6 that can win it next season:
Milan
Liverpool
United
Chelsea
Inter
Real Madrid

Depending on the draw of course, I fully expect 2 English teams in the semi-finals. Whether one will win it who knows.

Aren't you guys forgetting someone here? rolleyes.gif

Seriously, if Henry stays and Wenger bring on a good player, I think Arsenal stand a chance next year. We were within 15 minutes of doing it in Paris, and with a bit more luck...who knows?
As for Milan, my heart says yes and my head says no. If Arsenal come to face Milan in the final...WTF am I gonna do? sad.gif

Posted by: Tennie Jun 18 2007, 09:17 PM

It's far too early to tell what sort of form the various teams are going to have next year and so I hestitate to make any guesses. But...

I'd like to see someone from outside the standard group of countries do well - ie, not from England, Spain, or Italy.

I'd be thrilled to see Stuttgart surprise people and make it fairly far into the tournament (and to think I picked them as my 'Bundesliga team to follow' because I thought their jerseys were pretty).

Maybe a Portuguese team? It'd be nice to see Benfica do well, but they'd be dark horses. So, sadly, would Lyon. I like watching 'em play, but they're terrible chokers when it comes to tournaments.

So right now, if I had to say who I wanted to win the CL next year, my response would be 'Anyone But Inter'.

You need too many players to contend. I know you got to the Final a few years back, but you've lost half of that team. Henry, Pires, Campbell, Cole, Bergkamp. All very important players to you, I think you need at least 4 or 5 top players to compete in either the CL or the EPL.

All these players are (with the addition of Gilberto..) the only experienced players Arsenal has. To reach (at least) the semi's, you need experience .. It is a lost dream if anyone thinks a young team can make the distance. Cuz it is experience that counts in the crucial moments king.gif

If there is a team (otehr than Milan..) that is gonna win the CL next year, it would be either Chelsea or Barca .. I have a strong feeling that it will be either of those three cool.gif

The Champions League and European qualifying for the 2010 World Cup undergo changes, announce UEFA.

From 2007-08 the Champions League will also have a seeding system in the draw for the quarter-finals.

This is to prevent teams who are already qualified from resting their players in the final one or two Group games, as that will affect their standing.

Clubs will receive two points for a win and one for a draw in the seeding system drawn up at the end of the first knock-out round.

To protect the big names. wink.gif

Do you think UEFA were happy with the Porto vs Monaco final? Not at all.

They're basically trying to fix it to make it almost impossible for sides like that to get through. By seeding it, they keep all the top sides apart, ensuring that they get the easiest possible routes to the QFs/SFs. rolleyes.gif

That's not entirely true. That final was one in a million... and it will happen again some time. Now by doing this, more "small" clubs will be able to get through the groups stages.

*

How does that work?

-The 'big' clubs will use their better players more often. - Meaning more wins.
-The 'big' clubs will win more games. - The 'small' clubs will lose more.

With the bigger teams almost being 'told' they have to put out a strong team for every game means the lesser sides stand even less chance of getting through. Now they pick up and odd win here and there because the big teams put our weakened sides. That will happen even less now.

UEFA have always done this to protect bigger teams. What happened to the good old knockout competition that was the European Cup?

-They let more than just the Champions of each league and holders enter. - So that if United, Juve and Co. didn't win the league, they could still be in it.
-Added a group stage. - If a big side lost a fluke one off game to a small team, then the small team just defended the second leg and got away with it, the bigger side would be out. Now you get 6 games, you can afford the odd loss now.

Posted by: dst Jun 25 2007, 11:55 AM

It's simple... I'll give you an example... under these rules, Milan would have fielded against Lille a proper squad and they would have to win to secure the best feed possible for the team. That means, Milan would have probably avoided that humiliating defeat inside the San Siro and Lille would have been left out of the next round, letting AEK through...

Lille>>>>AEK anyway, but similar things have happened with other teams... I remember Milan handing the last game to Real in 2003 when they would only get through with the 3 points... that was a passive game... I have no doubt it was a giveaway...

UEFA are trying to get more small team go through the groups stages... what happens after that is another issue but this means more chances for them!

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jun 25 2007, 12:12 PM

Nine times out of ten, the group stage would go as follows.

This is an example remember.

Madrid: Played 6 - Won 6. (Beats everyone twice).
Lazio: Played 6 - Won 4. (Lose both ties to Madrid. Win the other 4 games).
Bordeaux: Played 6 - Won 2. (Beat Levski home and away, lose the other 4).
Levski Sofia: Played 6 - Won 0. (Lose all 6 games).

In theory that's what will happen if all teams were to put out their best 11 in all 6 games. Obviously some games will be drew and their may be the odd shock win.

Whereas in previous years Lazio may play a weakened side and Bordeax may snatch some points off them, opening it up for second place. That'll have less chance of happening now because Lazio will be at full strength.

@Kurt: It's not like that most of the time, that's for sure. Check how often the big team has to be helped at the very last moment to go through!

Posted by: Costacurta Jul 8 2007, 03:40 AM

I shall begin by discounting Real. Sacking Capello was so dreadful a mistake their incompetence I have just to laugh at. I remian a fan of Capello and in a way glad to see him go from Real as they are less of a threat now.
Chelsea must be gagging to win it. Squad to small last season. Formation questionable.
Manchester Utd will make a big tilt for it. Sir Alex is hell bent on winning that cup again before retiring.
Arsenal no chance. Liverpool can't be lucky again.

Barcelona. Prob got selection issues as they won't know which attackers to play. big egos bound to grate but they have a great shot, especially consdiering good old former Milan man Mr Rijkaard understands the importnce ofdefence and has looked to acquire accordingly lately.

No Dutch or German club have got a hope in hell I'm afraid to say. Frankly this is bad for football in general. The relative demise of the likes of Ajax, PSV, Dortmund and Bayern mean that many struggle to even make it to the group stages, notably Ajax last season.
Lyon just not good enough.

And so Italy.
I know I rubbished our chances this year and we went and bleeding won it, but I don't believe we can meet the challenge of being the first team to retain it. I feel a focus on Serie A wouldn't go a miss, and that means making a good start to the season for once.
Inter, mentally not capable I don't think.

Overall, Man Utd, Chelsea or Barca.

Transfers far from over I know but thats how I think its weighing up atm.

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jul 8 2007, 03:47 AM

I agree with almost everything you said there, there's just one thing I don't, Inter.

They have serious fire-power and if the Chivu deal goes in their favour, a decent, experienced defense.

As with Costacurta I see no none English/Spanish/Italian side getting close.

United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Milan, Inter, Valencia, Real and Barca will be the quater-finalists (Draw dependant of course). With Inter, Chelsea, United and Barca as the final four. I pick Inter to go all the way. *Prepares for a beating*

Even though i hate to admit it, i think they're very desperate for the cup. After they won serie A they felt proud to be on top of italy. After we won cl, they go knocked down to 2nd and that reallly hurt there pride badly. I mean what is scudetto to Cl cup. Like SAF, Morrati will be hell bent on winning the cup. I just hope we can contend to semi's because this year it was kaka + luck that we won.

Concerning the german CL clubs, I think Stuttgart will be a good surprise. Not that they have a realistic chance to win the CL but I'm sure they'll surprise many football fans as they did it in the Bundesliga last season. They have one of the most talented strikers in Europe (Mario Gomez) and good playmaker in Yildiray Bastürk who already has a lot of CL experience. Hildebrands transfer will be a problem though. their new keeper just doesn't have his class.
Besides them there are the usual suspects of course. With their new I would Bayern give a chance to win the CL as well, but they'll have a nice time in the loser cup laugh.gif

He was a trainee at Bayern, told he wasn't good enough so we picked him up. He never scored a bad goal for us, all of 'em for 30 yard screamers.

What better way to treat the club that gave you a chance by telling them you'll re-sign in january with 6 months left on your deal, then deciding you want to leave on a free at the end of the season. I still like him, but he's about as welcome as any Blues player at Villa Park. tongue.gif

Good to see he's a regular in the NT now, and getting some success in Germany.

I don't think that saying that it'll be up to the usual suspects (Milan, Chelsea, Real etc..) to win the CL is crazy. It's basically up to the same teams to win the CL every year. I dunno which of these teams will be the favourite, but it's very likely that one those "usual suspects" will win.

They've apparently moved Katsouranis back into defense. Second half just started with Coentrao replacing Bergessio (striker for striker).

The Biancocelesti are being naughty. It's 1-1 at the Olimpico, but Behrami got a straight red for a bad foul and Mutarelli a yellow for protesting the red.

Rangers and Red Star are still scoreless at Ibrox (Red Star has 3 yellows as of the 60th min).

Valencia leads Elfsborg 1-0 (goal by Vicente- I think, my Spanish sucks - in the 6th).

EDIT:

The Biancocelesti are VERY naughty. Mutarelli red-carded in the 86th.

Nice match report article on Benfica's game on Uefa.com (http://www.uefa.com/competitions/ucl/news/kind=1/newsid=570944.html).

Best quote: Rui Costa's genius also earned praise from København coach Ståle Solbakken. "I think he is even too clever for his own team-mates," Solbakken said.

In today's early 3d round game, Scousers defeated Toulouse 1-0, Voronin goal in the first half.

Posted by: Locke Lamora Aug 15 2007, 09:37 PM

Sparta Prague 0-2 Arsenal.

1st. goal by Fabregas after a fantastic run by Clichy.
2. goal by Hleb, pass from Sagna.

Posted by: Portikins Aug 16 2007, 12:21 AM

2 great goals by Rui but Benfica sucked yesterday. They need something more after selling M.Fernandes to Everton.

Liverpool did what they know best. Defend well and a stunner by Voronin.

Arsenal solved their problems in 10 minutes. Very good result.

It's AEK vs Sevilla tonight and I don't know what's going to happen... AEK's player are devastated by the deaths of people here in Greece caused by the fires and now Sevilla lost a member of theirs...

I think UEFA should show their human face and let the players decide if they want to play or not...

... cry.gif It's so sad...

edit: it's almost official now, UEFA has postponed the game...

Posted by: kurtsimonw Aug 28 2007, 04:23 PM

Agreed.

Both tradgedies are much more important than scheduling trouble that it may cause. I'd sy postpone it without question. This really isn't a time where you can play football properly.

Posted by: Tennie Aug 28 2007, 05:43 PM

A classy gesture from the Scousers in honor of the local boy (an Everton fan) who was shot last week:

Liverpool Football Club will tonight pay Rhys Jones the ultimate tribute by playing his beloved Everton anthem at Anfield before the clash with Toulouse.

The Z-Cars theme tune 'Johnny Todd' - the song which traditionally greets the arrival of the Everton team onto the Goodison Park pitch - will be played prior to 'You'll Never Walk Alone' ahead of this evening's 8.05pm kick-off.

Following a suggestion from Liverpool Echo feature writer Tony Barrett to mark the youngster's tragic death in such an unprecedented way, the newspaper was inundated with requests for the unique tribute to be staged.

Anfield chief executive Rick Parry spoke with Rhys's family who agreed they would be delighted if the Reds paid tribute to their son's memory in such a fitting way.

After the two songs there will then be a minute's applause and the Liverpool players will show their respect by wearing black armbands during the game.

Rhys's parents Stephen and Melanie will also be at Anfield for the game.

The youngster's uncle Neil Jones admits the family have been overwhelmed by such a show of support from the Blues' city rivals.

He said: "When I told them about the proposed tribute at Anfield, Melanie said playing Johnny Todd at Anfield would be a unique event, a complete one-off, just like Rhys, and a fitting tribute to him as it was his favourite tune.

"She's also pretty sure he'll have a little mischievous grin on his face at the thought of being the cause of it."

I'm happy with this draw (especially compering to some other groups). We will progress without any problem.

Benfica lost a few key players and not as stronger this season as used to be. Celtic have a mediocre start this year and was playing bad against Spartak. Shakhtar bought some good players like Lucarelli and Castillo, and away it will be a very dificult game but nothing we can't handle.

Posted by: kurtsimonw Aug 30 2007, 06:04 PM

I am a little wary.

Celtic: A few years ago we had them in the groups. Drew away, scored 2 late goals to win at home. Last year we needed extra time to beat them - We don't have that luxury this time round.

Benfica: We won't win in Portugal, we should win at home.

Shakhtar: Eastern European teams are historically good at home, I'd be happy with a draw away and a win at home.

We should all be happy with qualifying, it's a very tough group.

Well. Interesting draw. Chelsea-Valencia and MU-Roma in the same respective groups this go round. I'd imagine that some folks (ROMA?) will be thinking about payback this go round.

At a quick glance, I'd say that Milan got a relatively easy draw. The away Shakhtar tie will be difficult (anyone know if they play on artificial turf?) as will the game at Parkhead. Much as I adore Benfica, they're playing like shite this year after having sold off so many players and fired their coach. I think a win at Luz is possible. (And given the $500 RT flights to Lisbon, I may try to get there for the game).

Group A: Liverpool - Porto - Marseilla - Besiktas (Liverpool would breeze through here)

Group B: Chelsea - Valencia - Schalke - Rosenborg (Valencia and Chelsea rolleyes.gif , but Schalke are no push overs either, so ..)

Group C: Real Madrid - Werder Bremen - Lazio - Olympiakos (Very tricky group ..)

Group D: AC Milan - Benfica - Celtic - Shakhtar Donetsk. (Milan wont have a problem with topping this group king.gif )

Group E: Barcelona - Lyon - Stuttgart - Rangers (Easily Barca and Lyon respectively, they are the most experienced of the bunch)

Group F: Manchester United - Roma - Sporting Lisbon - Dynamo Kiev. ( I know Roma are already grinning !!! They want their revenge devil.gif FORZA ROMA - I believe United and Roma will go through )

Group G: Inter Milan - PSV - CSKA Moscow - Fenerbahce. (Inter has the quality to see it's way through this group, followed by PSV or CSKA)

I wasn't refering to Adriano being "drunk" ... And I don't think it is fair for u to draw conclusions like that.

What I meant was this is what happens when u have 6 forwards and can only play 2. This is what happens when u overspend.

Manchester United and Liverpool oppose Platini

Liverpool and Manchester United have formally declared their opposition to UEFA president Michel Platini's plans for domestic cup winners to qualify for the Champions League.

The English clubs were the most outspoken opponents to the proposals among the 102 members of the European Club Forum who met in Nyon, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

There was a general acceptance of Platini's proposals to secure more places in the group stages of the competition for champions of the smaller leagues in Europe, but opinion was divided over his plan for cup winners.

UEFA communications director William Gaillard said: 'The most opposed to those proposals were Liverpool and Manchester United - they do not want to see a change to the format at all.

'Across the top seven countries however opinion was mixed. The Italians are strongly in favour because they want to revamp their cup competition, the Spanish and the French said it should be up to their FAs to decide, while the Germans were split among themselves.

'The clubs from the smaller countries were generally in agreement.'
The board of the forum will now decide whether to suggest counter-proposals to UEFA, who will decide on any changes at an executive committee meeting in November.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is a member of the forum's board but he would not take such a strong position as the other two English clubs.

On September 27 the federation will sit at Istanbul to discuss several matters. Platini wants to put forward the changes he wants to make in the Champions League (maybe he will decide to do it later on if he sees he doesn't have the backing...) and he's going to have his first real argument since he became President of the UEFA. These changes are for the 2009-2012 period. There are many ideas he wants to dish up, some of them are radical some are bloodless (for the G14 members)!

(The bloodless ones:) One of the measures he will propose will see the 75% of the UCL Final tickets go to the hands of fans and not sponsors and other... "engagements"! That is a good one... Moreover he wants the Final to be held only at 75+K capacity stadiums, a thought that will exclude most of Europe's stadia (and cities) but I think is right cause the Final should be played at a stadium as big as possible! Another one of these plain measures (and a weird one) is that he wishes the Final to be played on Saturday evening rather than Wednesday evening... he sees Saturday as a more... "family day"... or whatever!

But there are also big changes he has in mind and those will run into the G14 and the big federations! Platini's plan is not to cut the number of teams the big countries have in the competition but to make it harder for them to get into it and so to give bigger chances to other Champions to enter... the Champions League (In the draw a fortnight ago only 13 of the 32 teams were champions in their countries)! Platini wants the domestic Cup winners to be given a place in the CL too. Until now, 24 leagues oppose to this measure. English, and rightly so, are the greatest polemicists to this as the dynamic of the Premier League and the enormous TV contracts are threatened if the 4th League place does not mean a chance to enter to the CL! Some say the FA would like to see this measure be applied but they don't have the power to come against the Premiership administrators (?).

The strategy committee, in which the UEFA vice-presidents, the clubs, leagues and players take part, led by Şenes Erzik, will work up these thoughts and will propose their own measures to the executive committee on September 27. A proposal made by Umberto Gandini (Milan's representative and Organizational Manager) was to decrease the number of automatic qualifications spots to 20 and leave the other 12 spots up for grabs but Platini does not want to tail off the auto qual. spots!

To conclude, Platini, in the two days' congress at Istanbul will have to start the first big fight against a board he created himself and the committee that already blindsided him on the Euro 2012 issue...

Posted by: Rossoneri7 Sep 12 2007, 11:21 AM

I don't think it's a good idea, cuz in Italy the Moratti cup shouldn't be given any extra privileges.

Posted by: misha Sep 12 2007, 11:32 AM

At least it will make the Coppa more interesting. Big teams will go for it, especially if they are having a bad season in the league, like we had last year.

Posted by: kurtsimonw Sep 12 2007, 03:04 PM

I think it's a decent idea.

And finally UEFA has a president with balls, for way too long the giants of European football have been protected. I personally don't see how a team that finishes 4th and wins nothing deserves something more than a team that wins a trophy.

But when you really look at the big picture, will this really change anything? Not in England and Italy at least, recently it's been Roma/Inter and the big 4 in England winning the Cup competition anyways, and how often do they finish outside the top 4? Hardly ever.

My overall opinion is that it will make each Cup competition bigger, as it will increase competitiveness with the bigger teams going for it.

Yes, why ?

I mean the G14 involve the biggest European clubs around, and they usually have a higher voice than the not so big clubs ... They try to rally things to their benefit, but in the end (what I'm trying to say..) UEFA aren't waiting for the G14 to agree with them wink.gif

If ur referring to the super league thing ... It wont work unless UEFA agrees, which then makes it a legitimate league. Has UEFA agreed rolleyes.gif

Anyways, the G14 do have a voice, but t ain't as influential as it is believed it to be.

No, no ... I don't mean that I should be right or u should be right rolleyes.gif

I used to be of the opinion that the G14 is the sh1t ... But just recently, I have come to learn that they need UEFA's approval if they want that Super League. Why UEFA's agreement ? Because if UEFA don't approve, all their matches won't be recorded (there wont be any record for their teams nor their players at FIFA). That is what I understood just recently ... Talk to me 3 months ago and I would have had the exact opinion that u have wink.gif

Now whether I am sure 100% about this, I am not. In fact I am not sure about what u claim ... But again, this is why we are in a forum rolleyes.gif

Why am I giving UEFA the image that it is BIGGER than G14 .. Because Kuwait has a problem with it's FA. We don't have a president for the FA nor do we have board members (Corruption) rolleyes.gif In simple English, the league has halted. And FIFA was brought in to intervene ... The whole issue is being worked at as I am typing ...

Hope now u understand where I got my assumption from.

That's true... but the G-14 wouldn't care that much. UEFA have many more things to lose than records that's why I'm saying the G-14 have true power over them.

Well, I tried to sum it up ... But u had no clue in the first place tongue.gif

Okay, with all the chaos that is going on ... The newspapers keep us up to date, and there are several articles on what is going on etc ... a couple of months ago, 3 I think, an article was published about if the Kuwaitis don't reach an agreement with the AFC (or better yet FIFA), the league and national team would loose out status in the world of FIFA. The people behind the chaos are 4 people (who formed a coalition), each a president of his own club and they wanted to have at least one of them as an FA member. In this they gave an example of the G14 in Europe and the UEFA, and that if the G14 (with all its prestigious clubs) can't over rule UEFA then the 4 Kuwaitis need to back off from their demands (what I said above, that was what was written in the article).

Again, I am not here to assert anything on u, neither r u on me ... Rather, I want to understand so this is my contribution to help us understand cool.gif

Yeah they might have the power in terms of the best players in the world and the most decorated clubs around, u have a point there .. Other than that, UEFA is a part of FIFA. Yes they are king.gif

That is why I said they have a voice much bigger than the smaller clubs. They are a legitimate organization and I agree, but they are playing in a UEFA competition under FIFA rules. That is all I am saying ...

I think the G14 huff and puff, but under all the hype, they need UEFA much more than UEFA needs them. The G14 help each other and all that, and they get their way with UEFA in certain instances ... But UEFA don't need the G14 permission if they plan to implement anything.

No they're not! tongue.gif Just kidding... I'm trying to say that the G-14 can survive without UEFA... it's UEFA that would have problems surviving without them! Thus, UEFA fear that if they pull the driving rein too much, the horse might kick them down... The G-14 do not want a competition of their own but if they had to do it, they would do it!

This right here ... sh1t I think I am gonna quote u one day !!! The G14 are not just a bunch of football clubs, but the back bone of the financial footballing world king.gif And that is the weapon which they have. king.gif king.gif

But regulation is under UEFA as a whole ... And as I agreed before that UEFA would let the G14 get their way in certain instances (which could be attributed to financial gains..), they wouldn't necessarily need the backing of the G14 for anything.

Out of the article that Porty posted only Liverpool and United were the protesters. I don't think this has any bearing to bring in the whole G14 anyways, but rather they want to look after their own interests .. Keeping that 4th place open for anyone of them biggrin.gif

p.s. I hate politics and the whole issue revolves around politics. But again I do thank u for bringing up the issue about the $$ as it is VERY significant to European football today, especially where the G14 stand wink.gif

PARRY CONFIRMS CUP PLAN OPPOSITION
Jimmy Rice 12 September 2007

Rick Parry has confirmed the club's opposition to plans for FA Cup winners to get a Champions League spot.
UEFA president Michel Platini is behind the proposal, which would see only the top three from the Barclays Premier League enter Europe's premier competition.

Parry said: "Contrary to the claim only Liverpool and Manchester United oppose this in England, all the Premier League clubs at the UEFA meeting did so, and this position is supported by the Premier League itself.

"It's not a question of self-interest by the big clubs, because if you look at the recent FA Cup winners, all were in the top four. It's just more of a lottery in the cup.

"There's a strong feeling the Champions League place should be based on Premier League performance.

"Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle all feel the same way."

G14 Oppose Platini's Planned Champions League Changes

G14 - Europe's most powerful clubs - will not back Uefa president Michel Platini's plan to give domestic cup winners a Champions League place.

The elite G14 group of Europe's top clubs, who this week announced plans to expand membership by the end of the year, possibly to as many as 40 or 50 clubs, have made it clear they will not support Michel Platini's to change the criteria for entry into the Champions League.

Uefa president wants to allocate a Champions League place to domestic cup winners.

But G14's general manager Thomas Kurth said: "We're opposed to giving cup winners a place in the Champions League.

"We're very concerned about the quality of the competition and the damage this could cause," he added.

Platini's proposals, which could begin in 2009, would mean that in England, for example, the Premier League's top three and the FA Cup winners would qualif for the Champions League.

His proposals would give 16 cup winners a separate qualifying route into Uefa's premier club competition, and an allocation of four automatic places in the lucrative group stages.

The proposed changes were discussed by Uefa's Professional Football Strategy Council last month, but after some opposition from the European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL), Platini deferred the final vote by Uefa's executive by one month.

The EPFL, which represents leagues such as the English Premier League, Spain's Primera Liga and Italy's Serie A, was given until the end of October to come up with alternative proposals.

Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick has described Platini's plan as a "perfectly reasonable suggestion."

I don't think anybody needs to worry about that.

Only 50% of Chelsea played today, the other half is still injured, once he comes back they'll improve. Top 2 in the league, QFs of every competition they enter, no worries.

Hsm. A couple of surprising results today.

I didn't expect Chelsea to draw at home and I was thinking the Scousers would squeak out a win at the Dragao and finally end the English club curse there (no english club has won there).

I'm not /too/ surprised that Donestk won at home; they're a notoriously difficult team to beat at home. It'll be interesting to see if they can reproduce the form they showed today when they play at Parkhead or Luz or the San Siro. (With all due respect to Misha, I'm not too sure they can).

You are right. Usually there is pretty big difference between how thay are playing home and away, but this season they spent 80M$ on transfers, including likes of Lucarelli and Castillo, and considering what I saw from Benfica and Celtic, they have a good chance to finish second.

He was, I'm pleasently surprised with what I've read in the papers so far this morning, a lot are praising Shevchenko saying how he and Malouda saved Chelsea from disaster.

I hope Sheva can kick start his English career now, it's really annoying how pundits go on about how good Drogba is when before last season they were saying he's useless. IF Shevchenko finds his form and the main Chelsea players don't get injured then I'd be sure of them winning it this season.

I know what you're saying but I think last night he looked like the Milan Sheva whereas previous CL games he still struggled. Yes the EPL is different but this guy is one of the best in the world, the EPL still requires one thing - the ball to be in the back of the net, no matter what league you are in you're eye for goal doesn't go when you're that good.

I think it's down to confidence, I seriously feel Sheva at times thinks low of his ability at Stamford Bridge, if you don't believe in yourself you are useless in football. It doesn't help when for about a 3rd of the season you are being blamed for creating rows and making Chelsea lose rolleyes.gif

I can't see how the World's Best Attacker as he was at the time with us can suddenly turn to useless, it just doesn't make sense! That's why I still believe he will come good!

They were missing several players, i.e. most notably from the defence. But that shouldn't be an issue for them as they have depth rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

Anyways ... We beat Fener 5 or 6 2 yrs ago, but this time around Fener have Zico on the bench. And he totally owned Mancini in terms of tactics; I mean the champions of Italy loosing to Fener, that is just too much !!

Inter will go through in the end, but at the same time they wont last in the advanced stages. Mancini doesn't have what it takes to enrich his team with a game plan to the level of Milan/Barca. He lacks too much IMO.

Sure he has a HUGE squad to choose from, but what good is that when you are up against master tacticians who can literally r@pe your team.

p.s. I hope they come up against any of United/pool/Barca/Madrid/Sevilla and loose BIG time devilsmiley.gif devilsmiley.gif

I think that's a very good point. Good players/depth means nothing if you don't get it tactically right.

Just look what Greece and Porto did in 2004 through great tactical work!

Just saw the Sporting-United highlights (I missed it earlier!) and I was very pleased to see Cristiano's reaction when he scored. Didn't overly celebrate and bowed in apology to the fans.

Arsenal were by far the most impressive team of Day 1! Although Sevilla did not play as usual (a little bit frightened, a little bit defense-minded), the Gunners' performance was one to remember! Truly great.

Roma were very good too but Dynamo is too week a side for any concrete conclusions to come out of this game...

Milan and Real were both great attacking-wise but both made one too many mistakes thus I can't say I was impressed all in all.

Barcelona were very lucky... and Lyon too awful!

Great gesture from CR when he scored the only goal of that game (and a good one too) and a great response from the Lisbon crowd also!

laugh.gif @ Inter! You'll always walk alone... laugh.gif @ Maxwell too for the dribble he conceded in Fenerbahce's goal which by the way is my choice for goal of the week in the CL; magnificent strike!

And Henry scored today, so that makes the whole top 5 scoring on gameday 1.

I thought Di Stafano was top of that list... or did you mean from those still active? unsure.gif
