I think they make a great partnership and given more time to adjust to eachother's game, they can be really great together with Kaka behind them.

I doubt it. We're playing at San Siro, and Messina aren't a strong side to worry about. They would be in Serie B now if it wasn't for the scandal.

Channel4 Preview
Milan - Messina

In this topsy-turvy season Messina will face Milan at the San Siro as equals – at the very least. Between the Calciopoli deductions and the Rossoneri’s disappointing start to the season they currently find themselves six points behind their Sicilian opponents going into this game.

Unfortunately for Milan, and in particular Alberto Gilardino, Ricardo Oliveira and Filippo Inzaghi, it has been their inability to hit the back of the net that has landed them in trouble and their Coach’s job in jeopardy. They have scored just once in their last four matches – and that was during the 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Roma.

Add to that the losses to Atalanta, AEK Athens in the Champions League and Inter in the all-important Derby della Madonnina, and the Diavoli have managed to earn just one point in five matches. While it is hardly championship form, under-pressure boss Carlo Ancelotti was quick to take the positives when they finally earned that point against Empoli last week.

However, on top of all his other worries Ancelotti also has an injury crisis to contend with. Massimo Ambrosini, Serginho, Kakha Kaladze, Gennaro Gattuso, Giuseppe Favalli and Alessandro Nesta will all miss out through their ailments, meaning the likes of Cristian Brocchi and Daniele Bonera should get another chance to prove their worth for the Rossoneri. There are also doubts over goalkeeper Nelson Dida, Marcos Cafu and Dario Simic after their Greek fitness issues in midweek.

Messina’s injury problems are much less severe with only Mathew Olorunleke out, but defender Marco Zanchi is still suspended after his red card against Torino. Veteran Mark Iuliano should continue in his place, but their 4-1 thrashing by Lazio last week showed that his presence is sorely missed at the back.

The Giallorossi have already seen their excellent start to the season begin to be erased in recent weeks. Their slight loss in form has made the difference between a win and a draw and as a result they now find themselves slipping down the table. A win over Milan at the San Siro would be a huge confidence boost whatever their form and they won’t be afraid to push forward with the Rossoneri’s poor recent strike record.

Man on fire: Christian Rigano (Messina) – With nine goals in 12 games Rigano is Serie A’s surprise top scorer. It may have taken him a while to prove he is up to the task of playing in the top flight, but he’s showing no signs of letting up just yet.

Last season: Milan 4-0 Messina

Form guide: Milan (W L L L D) Messina (L W D D L)

Milan (probable): Dida (Kalac); Simic, Costacurta, Maldini, Jankulovski; Brocchi, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kaka; Oliveira, Gilardino

Messina (probable): Storari; Zoro, Iuliano, Rea, Parisi; Alvarez, De Vezze, Cordova, Coppola, Masiello; Rigano

My probable line up: Kalac; Brocchi, Bonera, Maldini, Jankulovski; Pirlo, Gourcuff, Seedorf, Kakà; Oliveira, Gilardino.

Posted by: han2503 Nov 22 2006, 06:38 PM

X, have you heard anything on Milan channel about Dida's situation.

If Kalac is going to start this am fully expecting us to lose because of one of his blunders.

Dunno, I haven't watched Milan Channel lately, but if the official site says 2-3 months then 2-3 months it should be.

Apperantly yes, but I don't think it's anything serious.

So right now our injury list reads something like this.

Dida
Nesta
Kaladze
Cafu
Simic
Serginho
Rino

That is practically our defensive starting lineup

Posted by: han2503 Nov 24 2006, 12:09 PM

I think a flat 4-4-2 formation would be our best option for this game, so that we will have a stable midfield and a very solid defence ie. no fullbacks running up and down the flanks, so that Kalac won't be exposed, even for a second if it's possible.

I would go for something like this.

Brocchi--Paolo--Billy--Bonera
Kaka--Pirlo--Seedorf--Janku
---------Oliveira--Gila---------

or a 4-4-1-1 formation

Bonera--Paolo--Billy--Antonelli
Brocchi--Pirlo--Seedorf--Janku
-------------Kaka----------------
-----------------Oli---------------

In both formation Gourcuff could be played in place of either Pirlo or Seedorf, I personally would rather Bench Pirlo since all he seems to be doing lately is losing the ball in dangerous areas of the field.

I think I would swing more in favour of the 4-4-1-1 formation, very solid defence, Janku is naturally a winger, so I think he will play better there and be able to attack more. Brocchi can cover for Pirlo and Seedorf there and help out in the attack, I think he has a great cross and lob.

If we are going to play with one striker and kaka in support of him then Oli should be the one to play as the target man, but also the one who stretches Messina's defence with his runs so that Kaka could penetrate through the middle.

This is hopeless.. all the season is going down the toilet, the team is playing really bad from time to time, we cannot win any simple game, and the prima squadra is too tired, im getting very dissapointed.... sad.gif

the result will be a tie 0-0 or 1-1 no more.

NESTA, KALA AND SIMIC RETURN
11/24/2006 4:40:00 PM

The Rossoneri were hard at work today ahead of Saturday's game with Messina. Nesta, Kaladze and Simic are back, but not Ambro.

Today’s light pre-game training session started at 3pm CET. Carlo Ancelotti spoke to his players and then they started the session with warm-ups, followed by athletic work that included stretching, running, sprints and speed and agility exercises. Then the session took on a decidely technical-tactical focus after 30 minutes and the group worked with the ball. A series of practice games closed the practice.

Alessandro Nesta, Kala Kaladze and Dario Simic were back training with the group and, in fact, they are on the list of the 20-man squad for Messina. Massimo Ambrosini was not called up and spent the session working in the gym.

The three recovered players, in addition to the three Primavera youth side players (Facchin, Antonelli and Vitofrancesco), offer important options to coach Ancelotti.

Here is the Rossoneri squad for Messina:

KEEPERS: Fiori, Kalac, Facchin (n.30); DEFENDERS: Antonelli (n.31), Bonera, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Jankulovski, Simic; MIDFIELDERS: Brocchi, Gourcuff, Kakà, Pirlo, Seedorf, Vitofrancesco (n.39); STRIKERS: Borriello, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Ricardo Oliveira.

robben-often used in a 3 man attack and we never are that adventous and we don't play with wingers so no chance
torres- either staying at a.madrid or joining man.u i'm afraid

Kalac; Bonera, Simic, Maldini, Jankulovski; Pirlo, Brocchi, Seedorf, Kakà; Oliveira, Gilardino

If I was Carlo I would rest Seedorf and put Gourcuff instead. The rest is fine.

http://www.goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=175826: Milan-Messina

Milan dominated this fixture last season (with a brace from the now departed Andriy Shevchenko), 4-0, but that certainly cannot be expected this time around. The attacking third has been the dead zone for Milan this season, and things do not look to be improving.

The strikers were again not able to do their jobs last weekend, in the scoreless draw away to Empoli. However, Ricardo Oliveira did hit the frame of the goal twice, so he cannot necessarily be faulted too much, at least for last weekend’s result.

In fact, Milan have hit the woodwork twelve times this season, a staggering number for a side thought to have several dead-aim shooters at their disposal.

Messina have fared much better this term, sitting in twelfth place, six points ahead of Milan. They have been led by Serie A top scorer Christian Rigano. Although, the results have started to escape from their grasp recently. Their form is slipping, but they can still feel good about their chances against Milan, who are struggling in all departments right now.

CURRENT FORM

Milan (L L D, 8 points)

The Rossoneri are in fifteenth place in the Serie A table, which is no surprise considering they have not won in a full month. Not only that, but they have been losing their recent matches, and things don’t really seem to be improving, despite finally getting a point in the draw at Empoli last Saturday.

While the offense is non-existent, the defense has also become leaky, after starting the season playing well. Milan have now allowed more goals (12) than they scored(11).

Messina (D D L, 14 points)

The Giallorossi are too struggling at the moment, without a victory since the end of October. The goals have only been coming from one person, Christian Rigano, and he will need some assistance if they are to stay around mid-table before the winter break.

TEAM NEWS

The casualties just continue to pile up for Milan. Names such as Massimo Ambrosini and Serginho have been missing in action for most of the season. Add to that the likes of Gennaro Gattuso and Giuseppe Favalli, who are both out until 2007. Further possible absentees are Alessandro Nesta, Marcos Cafu and Kakhaber Kaladze.. The worst piece of news for Milan is the injury suffered by goalkeeper Nelson Dida, who will be out for around 8-12 weeks.

The only major injury for Messina is Mathew Olorunleke. However, Marco Zanchi is out through suspension.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Kakà (Milan) – He is the only squad member who has been able to score with any regularity this term. Therefore, his play will be essential to a positive result.

Christian Rigano (Messina) – Who else? He has scored nine goals this season, and could be a revelation this year like Luca Toni was last season.

POSSIBLE STARTING XI’s

Milan (4-3-1-2): Kalac; Simic, Costacurta, Maldini, Jankulovski; Brocchi, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kakà; Oliveira, Gilardino

Messina (4-5-1): Storari; Zoro, Iuliano, Rea, Parisi; Alvarez, De Vezze, Cordova, Coppola, Masiello; Rigano

PREDICTION
Hmm, this is a real head scratcher. Convention would say to select Milan, but they have been anything but themselves this season. Messina also have been tough to predict, because of their recent problems.

Milan 1-0 Messina

Yes defensively he has been better, especially in the AEK game, he stole a couple of balls in that one.

But as R7 said, when he loses the ball it's always in a dangerous area that will spark a counter for our opposition.

I personally think that he is a risk to play when he is in such bad form

At a time like this, we have close to no options and a very weak bench .. I doubt Carlo would bech him for any reason ..

Defense-wise, he has been better, as he is taking up some of Gennaro's duties .. Very obvious. But my point is, when he's under pressure, which is what has been happening, he looses the ball ... U were at the game .. How many times did he loose the ball right on the 18 yard-line .. I was literally screaming at the screen when he did it not once, twice, but 4-5 times ..

9' Brilliant touch from Gourcuff... he takes the ball beautifully before turning and slipping a ball in for Gilardino... who strikes the ball well, but wide of the mark!

10' Gourcuff heavily involved so far... he'll be looking to take full advantage of his chance in the starting XI...

33' Brilliant again from Gourcuff! Bonera sends over a far post cross... the Frenchman's control on his chest is Zidane-like, but his shot is weak and Storari claims!

36' Gourcuff really looks like a quality player... this boy's got the world at his feet...

41' Nice feet once again from Gourcuff... he skips past one challenge before dinking a ball through for Inzaghi! Oh dear! That's an awful header from the Superpippo! He gets it all wrong and the ball nearly hits the corner flag!

Posted by: milanmalaysia Nov 25 2006, 09:33 PM

the left flank was good but the right flank was weak.

brocchi not so impressive, as well as bonera. kudos to janku and gourcuff, they hold the ball and get some running on their side.

Pirlo was amazing as well. Kaka looks tired though. Pippo should've done better. Hoping Oli could come in and get some goals more.

What worries me is Kalac. hope maldini and simic could provide solid backline.

FORZA MILAN!

Posted by: X-Offender Nov 25 2006, 09:33 PM

So far so good. Maldini, Gourcuff and Pirlo are looking great, especially Yoann. We should score the second and close the match, cause as han said, with Kalac gaurding your posts you never know. Kakà should have not have wasted that chance. I swear I already thought we scored, the speaker shouted goal, but... Anyway, the offside trap is working pretty fine tonight, Rigano's having few crosses, but I've got to admit he's very dangerous. Look out guys. FORZA MILAN!

seedorf is lazy. gourcuff is hardworking.
seedorf is slow. gourcuff is fast.

i would like to see seedorf competing for a space. perhaps he can be motivated a bit.

perhaps a 4-2-3-1 formation could be the answer...

4- Bonera, Nesta, Kaladze, Janku
2 - Pirlo, Gattuso
3 - Seedorf, Kaka, Gourcuff
1 - Gila

Whoo-Hoo, we finally won. It was since Milan-Anderlecht I didn't feel so good. The guys played a marvellous match, especially Gourcuff. Man I love this guy, he's our future. Kakà had a pale 1st half but he was the star of the second. We created so many chances it felt like the match against Siena: posts, miracles by the keeper etc. except this time we got the 3 points. On Wednesday we're playing in Brescia so most of our important players, especially Kakà, will rest their bones and be ready for the match against Cagliari. FORZA MILAN! devilsmiley.gif

Posted by: mchanna Nov 25 2006, 10:52 PM

kalac: well doing okay, but almost let in a stupid goal.
pirlo: brilliantly in the 1st half, showing glimpse of wc form.
brocchi: good, but not excellent, but I saw him actively on pitch.
simic: good defense
maldini: what can I say... he is our TRUE CAPITANOAND A MILANISTI!!! very beautiful header, from a pirlo freekick
Jankulovski: good game from him
gila: some chances, some misses.... but doing better than last ga,me
kaka: what can I say. First half not so good, cause he looked very tired (because he pülayed nearly every game) but 2nd half he was fast and furious LOL. Unfortunately hitting the post, and the goalkeeper saved many shots from kaka!
gourcuff: very good player today! He should have scored, he would have deserved it.
inzaghi: rubbish!!! should have scored that per header, but no... some chances screwed up. just had to see his face, this scowling face.

Ancelotti: Win was vital

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti insists tonight’s win over Messina will allow his players to get their campaign back on track.

After collecting just one point from their last four games, there was understandably talk of a crisis at the San Siro.

But the side got back to winning ways thanks to a single Paolo Maldini goal which the Coach believes will calm nerves.

“These are three important points which will help us work without anxiousness from now on,” said the tactician after the final whistle.

Although happy with the result, Ancelotti is well aware that his club have some way to go to get back to their former greatness.

“The side still needs to grow,” he added. “We had a few problems in the first half, but I’m happy with how we ended the game.

“Kaka? He played well and deserved a goal the more the match went on.”

The Brazilian did shine and also hit the woodwork, even if he isn’t too disappointed with his failure to ripple the net. “It went well as winning was all that counted,” he claimed.

“We took the lead early which made things easier, it’s just a shame that the second goal didn’t arrive.

“Their goalkeeper [Marco Storari] was in good form tonight. He deserves credit as we kept trying to score and he just parried.”

Messina boss Bruno Giordano accepted the defeat with dignity and a little bit of disappointment.

“It went as we expected in terms of the fact that they kept the ball for long periods. We did well though and with a little luck we could have netted a positive result," he said.

“We wanted to contain them but we conceded after 10 minutes.

“Christian Rigano? We can’t attack all of the time as we must take into account the interests of the team.

“You can’t expect to come to the San Siro and create 15 attempts on goal. You need a little bit of luck.”

Yep. As this is a 'special season'... I'm not surprised.

Posted by: GULLIVER Nov 26 2006, 09:20 AM

Well I was out of the town. Just saw that Maldini scored the only goal.

Is it like a spell and none of our strikers isn't able to do anything. I mean even Pipo is off target... that's sad.

Anyways I'm very happy for Maldini, and hope will continue to win... Really HOPE

I don't think it's really that bad. In English football, that ammount is a full house. The San Siro is twice that size, it would take a lot to be filled to it's capacity in every game.

Got my ratings, these are mostly for Captain Jack cool.gif

Kalac: 5 - Credit to him for not making any howlers I know that's abnormal for him, but his slip when that Rigano header almost went in, was just a moment when I wanted to knock the TV to the ground. That could have easily been the equaliser.

Bonera: 7 - Very good defensively, aaverage going up, but I see he has been working a lot on his crosses. Maybe he can still be our Stam replacement.

Simic: 7.5 - Very solid throughout the whole match.

Il Capitano: 10 - What can I say about our Capitano?? A true leader with a great headder cool.gif . Kept the defence perfectly inline to protect Kalac throughout the whole match.

Janku: 8 - Very good game, both from the defensive aspect and the attacking one.

Gourcuff: 8.5 - What a player he is!! And only 20 years old. We've got a diamond here. He will turn out to be our next Kaka, I'm sure of this. He was the most impressive player on the pitch last night in the first half, until Kaka came up and stole the show in the second that is cool.gif

Pirlo: 8 - I hope this is him regaining his form again. He had a great game, I think he won least 10 balls in the game with interceptions or tackles. He took charge of the tempo and the playmaking of the game immediately when the match started. And if we are going to do anything usefull this season, we will need him to be at his best.

Brocchi: 7 - He might not be Rino but he still works very hard for the team, and a very useful asset.

Kaka: 8 - A decent first half (that miss ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ) But he put his shooting boots on at half time and came on fire in the 2nd half, Too bad he couldn't get that goal. And that woodwork again!! Seriously, there is something wrong with us this season, it's not natural to hit the post more then you have actually scored goals in a season.

Gila: 7.5 - When he and Pippo play together he is the one acting as the seconda punta to him, and he isn't that, but last night he was really trying and I saw him holding the ball up for both Pippo and Kaka, nodding the ball down for them to get a shot in and even made 2 great assists for Pippo (which he wasted). At least he wasn't a ghost in tonight's game, he was working really hard, and not just to get himself a goal but for the other's to score.

Pippo: 5 - And this is where the hair pulling comes, I mean WHAT THE HELL HAS HAPPENED TO PIPPO IN JUST A MATTER OF MONTHS????? I hope this is just a temporary dip in form because we need his goals this season, now more then ever!! But for the next game I want him to sit out, with Oli and Gila being our front pairing, they are the best combination we have.

Did you watch the match?? 7.5 might have been a BIT exagerated, but he was working hard and trying to make things happen for Pippo ie playing the seconda punta role. When he and Pippo play together I never really expect any one from them to score, although Pippo had some glorious chances that he should have scored.

I think him and Pirlo pulled all the strings from the midfield perfectly, Pirlo was making the plays and Gourcuff was dictating the pace perfectly.

Milan 1-0 Messina
Maldini 13 (M)
Stadio Meazza

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paolo Maldini grabbed the only goal of the game as Milan got back to winning ways against Messina. The Rossoneri captain headed home a 13th minute opportunity to breath new life into the club’s problematic campaign.

Milan went into the tie hungry for a win that would ease their mini crisis. The Rossoneri had only collected one point from their last four games and the pressure has been increasing on boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Yet the tactician’s job has been made spectacularly difficult by an injury crisis. Goalkeeper Dida was the latest casualty to be ruled out – for two months – in midweek, while Seedorf only started on the bench this evening after picking up a minor complaint in training. Gourcuff took his shirt on the left-hand side of midfield.

Messina, fresh from last week’s 4-1 home humbling to Lazio, fielded a 4-5-1 system which was designed to stifle the Rossoneri. Yet that didn’t really happen in the opening 45 minutes where the San Siro giants threatened and entertained.

Gilardino went close on 10 minutes after some fine footwork by Gourcuff who is confirming himself as a star for the future. The striker’s right foot shot beat the ‘keeper, but he failed to add to his solitary one Serie A goal so far this term.

Milan did take the lead soon after through their symbol. Pirlo floated a dangerous ball into the penalty area from a free-kick and Maldini jumped highest to head past Storari. It was a lead which they managed to hold on to until the break, even if they wasted numerous chances to increase it.

Bonera was getting forward dangerously and he assisted Gilardino and Gourcuff on separate occasions. The first cross saw Gila head wide, while the Frenchman forced a save from Storari. The latter also denied Kaka a chance at goal in minute 27 and a Pirlo long ranger.

Messina’s only real effort of the opening 45 unsurprisingly fell to Serie A top scorer Rigano. He underlined his heading ability, but he failed to get the necessary contact or direction to beat giant Australian custodian Kalac.

The second half started in the way the first ended – with Milan pushing for a second. Inzaghi and Gourcuff both saw early efforts sail over the bar, until SuperPippo asked Storari to expertly save his fine volleyed effort.

Milan’s lack of a killer instinct almost came back to haunt them in the 66th minute when Rigano’s header just skimmed past the post with Kalac beaten. Yet that was an all too rare Messina attack as the Rossoneri continued to have the better chances.

Storari was again superb to deny a Maldini header and a shot from substitute Seedorf, until the woodwork interfered with the Diavolo’s season again. After hitting 10 posts in 12 games already, the on-fire Kaka made it 11 with a sublime effort.

Floccari and Kaka exchanged efforts in the closing stages but they didn’t change the result of the tie. Milan, for tonight at least, are now just eight points away from fourth place and next season’s Champions League.

Milan back to winning ways

A 1-0 win over Messina courtesy of Paolo Maldini's first half header at the San Siro on Saturday helped ease the pressure on Milan and their coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The Rossoneri headed into the game without a win in their last four attempts and with a great deal of pressure resting on their shoulders. But Maldini's goal and an inspired performance from the wonderful Brazilian midfielder Kaka might now have got Milan back on track.

Only time will tell how long the Diavolo will be able to continue in their winning ways, but there can be no denying that this was a crucial result for Ancelotti's side.

Milan fielded a heavily weakened side due to an injury list nearly as long as the wait Milan fans have had to endure for a Serie A win of late, but the understudies excelled and ultimately proved they could succeed where their peers have failed over recent weeks.

In particular Yoann Gourcuff, the young French midfielder, stood out, and at times the comparisons between him and his compatriot Zinedine Zidane did not seem so outrageous.

But it was Kaka who ran the show, and as long as Milan have his almost unrivalled talent in their side, they will never be short of creativity, excitement and flair. The Brazilian came close on a number of occasions to getting himself on the scoresheet, not least with a second half drive that cannoned off the angle of bar and post.

But perhaps it was inevitable that, given the Milanese strikers' recent difficulty in finding the back of the net, the opener should come from the unlikeliest of sources.

Maldini's header after just 13 minutes gave the hosts the perfect start and who better than the veteran defender to calm the nerves after an awful run of domestic form?

The goal came from a dangerous Andrea Pirlo free kick, swung into the danger area with typical precision, with veteran Maldini doing nothing more than helping the ball on its way.

The slight diversion created by the full back's forehead fooled Marco Storari in the Messina goal, who could only palm the ball further into the corner of the net.

Milan had dominated the first half, and Messina struggled to even get out of their own half.

On one of the few occasions they did, Alessandro Parisi found Cristian Rigano in the box, but the marksman could only head straight at stand-in keeper Zelijko Kalac.

Chances fell thick and fast for the Rossoneri, as Gourcuff, along with Pirlo, pulled the strings in midfield.

Pirlo saw a well struck long range effort punched to safety by Storari - easily Messina's busiest player on the night - before Kaka wasted the best opportunity of the first half.

The Brazilian's control from Alberto Gilardino's knock down was exemplary, but his stabbed effort went wide of the mark on 24 minutes.

The second half was no less littered with chances for the home side, with Inzaghi twice going close in the opening stages after the restart. First the Italy international shot wide before forcing Storari into a save, both times after having been set up by Kaka.

Maldini nearly had a second goal to celebrate, but his looping header was tipped over the bar to safety by Storari on 70 minutes.

Kaka and Christian Brocchi both had further chances for more goals, and even Alberto Gilardino, who has so struggled for form this season, nearly got in on the act when he stung Storari's fingers with ten minutes left on the clock.

In truth Messina did not deserve to nick a point, but get something from the match they nearly did when Rigano wrong footed Kalac on 65 minutes with a header that fell just wide of the upright.

It's really not about how hard you try as a striker... It's about the impact you make... and both Gila and Inzaghi look like handicapped players who can't run AT ALL!!!

Of course it's about how many goals you score when you are a striker.

But the point is, since you zeroed in on my Gila rating, he is 'trying' to play in the Sheva role, and that means create plays and try to make as many assists to the main target man as possible.

But Gila is NOT that kind of striker. But was he trying hard enough to fill those shoes ?? Yes definately!!

And comparing his performance last night to the previous 2, then I would say he made an improvement, at least he's not invisable.

About Pippo, well I really don't have anything to say to try and defend him, his misses were BAD!! If those chances fell to the Pippo of a couple of months agao he would have scored all of them.

since we're on the subject of Pirlo and Gourcuff pulling the strings in midfield they are the 2 players with the most played balls in the game.

Pirlo with 114 played balls and Gourcuff coimng in behind him with 90.

Plus Gourcuff won a total of 6 balls and Pirlo 5. I would say that's pretty impressive especially since both of them are mainly attacking mids. I like how they have taken some responsability due to the loss of Rino

Posted by: X-Offender Nov 26 2006, 11:49 PM

Hands down, Gourcuff was MOM last night. Paolo scored and leaded the defense like a tiger, Kakà was pale in the first half but on fire in the second, Pirlo won a lot of balls and dictated the pace perfectly, but Gourcuff was above all of them IMO. He's gaining his form back. Way to go Yoann!

I know this is a little late, but I'm just back with net connectivity after the trip to Milan. My seat wasn't the best for pictures but I did have a wonderful view of Maldini's goal.

Herewith are some observations on the Messina game, from someone who shivered through the 2 hours at San Siro (it was /cold/ Saturday night!).

Kalac did a good enough job in goal but he got very, very lucky on a couple of the saves. Then again, Rigano was pretty much shut down for much of the game, which is a credit to the Milan defense.

Maldini. What can one say? He played an amazingly good game, and his header was beautiful. The stadium erupted when he scored, and I'm really glad to have had the chance to see it in person.

Brocchi. His workrate was amazing, constantly chasing after balls. I do hope the fall wasn't serious (though it doesn't seem to be?).

Pirlo. He had a good first half, showing flashes of his regular form. But he slowed down noticeably after half time.

Gourcuff. This kid is someone to watch. He was brilliant on Saturday, and if he keeps playing like that, he's going to be very very special. I was impressed.

The strikers. None of them really impressed me overmuch, to be honest. There were efforts on goal, but the real impetus in the team seemed to be from a midfield that was /finally/ acting cohesively. There were some wonderful one-touch passing sequences in both halves. The other thing that struck me in general was that the team was playing attacking football at pace; granted, it didn't pay off in terms of goals by the strikers, but I think it's a move in the right direction. Had Storari not been so brilliant in goal for Messina, the score would've been much higher.
