As unoptimistic as I am about Milan recently, this is a definately a win.
We'll have our defenders back, Pa7o (hopefully), nd we are starting to play like MILAN again

If we don't win this one...
I really hope Pato plays. I miss him!

I am not too keen on this "home" match and we have several players suspeneded aswell (Bonera, Ambro and Gattuso)
Reggina played quite well today, so i am going to be pessimistic and say this will be a draw

The team has a day off today, so no new training information.
Bonera and Ambro will sit this one out with suspensions. However, we do get Nesta and Kaladze back.
Here's the (very early) possible lineup from Gazzetta:
Kalac
Cafu Nesta Kaladze Maldini
Gattuso Pirlo Gourcuff
Kakà Seedorf
Inzaghi
I'd give Pirlo a day off, start Gourcuff, and play with 2 strikers:
Kalac
Cafu Nesta Kaladze Maldini
Gattuso Gourcuff Seedorf
Kaka
Pippo Paloschi (assuming Pato isn't fit)

So we're basically back where we started! Nesta will help the defense, but Kaladze will make it worse.
I'm not even going to predict a result for this one. We should beat Reginna, but they had a good result at the weekend.

Alrighty then, this is the end. Make or break game. A negative result (draw or loss) here, friends and neighbors, and UEFA Cup will be a very healthy reality. I'd go in with a 3-1 result - in our favor, of course.
And oh, Pato reminds me more of Pele than anyone else. There can be only one Ronaldo.

Against Reggina I'd give Paloschi the starting chance and rest maybe Pato and ecen Inzaghi for Inter. On the other hand, if we approach to this match as a must-win and if we consider that there are chances we loose a 4th strait derby..maybe we shouldn't play around and start seriously..

Double training today.
In the morning session, there was a variety of work in small groups, e.g. sprints, Sand Pit Of Doom, woods, etc.
In the afternoon session, there was more tactical stuff, ball possession drills, and a practice game. No individual player was named in the description of the afternoon session so no guesses on anyone's state of health.
As noted in the Oddo thread, today is Oddo's first day back after knee surgery. He's stated that he doesn't think he'll be ready for Saturday's game but leaves it up to the coaches regarding his availability for next weekend's game (v. Livorno away).

You're right, but comparing someone to another player doesn't really undermine their capabilities, though the press loves to pin anyone as the new Pele, Maradonna, and whatnot. For Pato the comparisons are there: getting in the playing XI at such an early age, scoring on debut, etc. And all this without taking anything from the boy, and his individual talents. I'm fairly certain if everything goes well for him, he'll become an all-time great, and join the others in the footballing hall of fame. The signs are all there.

Nothing wrong with comparing players. I just think Pato looks a great player, while I don't rate Pele at all.

I stopped watching after Benfica, the defending in that was.. awful. If he played against top teams consistantly I'd agree he was great, but he didn't. It is fact that he never played in Europe, and my opinion that because of that he's not as great as everyone else thinks. And I've seen thousends of videos, my opinion isn't going to change.
I'm sure there are lots of very below average Serie A strikers that've scored goals past Inter, Milan and Sampdoria before anyways.

To be honest, I'm not too mad about Pele either. For all the gajillions of goals he scored, he should have at least tried his skills in Europe. Serie A in particular (as it was the best league at that time). The Argentinian at least played quite a lot for Napoli, but then again I'm not mad about Maradonna either.
That's not taking away the fact that they were good players, and for most even great. For me, I'd take Paolo over them day in and day out.
Posted by: kurtsimonw Apr 17 2008, 05:13 PM
If Pele wasn't Brazillian, you wouldn't hear so much about him. Just how often do you hear about Gerd Muller, and he scored ridiculous amounts of goals!
A good player? Yes, Pele was. Nothing more than that for me.

No Czechs or Turtles, however. And somebody said they had trouble with creative writing. Wonder who that was?

Could someone confirm it, please?
Posted by: Tennie Apr 18 2008, 03:37 PM
Today's training from acmilan.com:
Il Capitano pulled a muscle (doesn't sound serious) yesterday and didn't train.
Seedorf and Pippo trained in the gym. Janku did individual training.
The rest of the team went through a regular training session. In the practice game at the end of training, Oddo scored what acmilan.com describes as 'a lovely goal'. Maybe Elena Grimaldi DID help him recover
Tomorrow, training, Carletto's press conference, and the call up list.
Posted by: Tennie Apr 18 2008, 03:40 PM
As regards the mediaset article, it's claiming that people are concerned about the muscle pull Maldini got at the end of yesterday's training. Nobody's sure of anything yet and tests will give an indication of the extent of the damage (if any). If the results show stuff like a muscle tear, then yeah...season's over for Il Capitano.

But what is the biggest problem is that we don't have a defence left at least we get Nesta back for this one.

Kaladze is not bad at LB (he is not good either). So... Simic in the center?
Posted by: Besfort Apr 18 2008, 06:16 PM
Simic can play also as a RB and CB.
When Kaladze came to Milan, he was a typical Defensive Midfielder, then Ancelotti transfered him to Left Back, and now his favourite positions seems to be CB.
So he might take that place, with Nesta and Simic as a CB's and Cafu as a RB.
Favalli is in doubt for this match.
Ambrosini and Bonera are suspended which will probably give Gourcuff some playing time.
Pippo will start as a lone striker, with Gila and maybe Pato on the bench.
Btw, All time previous matches.

Um, usually I'm pretty optimistic, but I really don't feel too good about our chances for the fourth place. We'll probably win this match, but every time I take a look at Port's signature I get a sinking feeling: -4 with 15 points to play.
We're not four points ahead, mind you, and honestly shouldn't expect Fiorentina to drop more than 3 points in the remaining five matches, while we still have to face a club called Inter. Even if we manage the forth place, it will be more down to Fiorentina messing things up rather than us earning it. Last year Ronaldo played a very vital (and maybe underrated) part in our push for the fourth place. This year, it's completely different. How many points we've messed up in all the games this season? I can handily count 22 over the top of my head.
UEFA Cup sounds like a reality, with each passing day.

Highlights from Carletto's pre-match press conference:
* Oddo's available to play but isn't at the point where he can play the full 90 minutes (so will probably be a sub)
* Dida got hurt in training the day before Maldini did
* Seedorf is available
* Gattuso has said nothing to him about wanting to leave and Carletto believes Milan has no intention of selling him
* Carletto predicts 20 days out for Il Capitano
* He congratulates Billy on getting his coaching license and wishes him well
* Not talking about a total revolution of the team; Carletto thinks there are 7-8 core players to build around
* Carletto isn't necessarily averse to the return of Abbiati

Hate to disagree with you on this, Ari, but the time to take risks has come and gone. We just have to win the next five games, grab the 15 points, and then hope for the best. All those missed points in matches over the year, has to account somewhere. As for the match, we'll win this one for sure.
If we don't, then that's probably not a bad result after all, in a wicked, weired sort of a way.
Posted by: arivanjj Apr 20 2008, 01:56 AM
well that may be how you see it, but to me we're already out of CL and so it won't make a difference if we take those risks or not, our goal shouldn't have come down to these last 5 games anyways...
right now i honestly don't want to participate in CL next season, the bigger the damage now the bigger the slap is in our management's face.
Posted by: Darunia Apr 20 2008, 02:44 AM
Gazzetta's probable lineup:
Kalac
Cafu
Nesta
Kaladze
Favalli
Gattuso
Pirlo
Brocchi
Seedorf
Kaka
Inzaghi
I think Pato-Inzaghi will start though.

Yeah, but the lure of seeing Paolo and Ronaldo participate together in next year's Champions League is too hard to resist.
Even at this dying stage, Rome 2009 is calling. And if we somehow make it, with a bunch of decent signings, we could do well in Europe. But even I have to agree that, it'd come down to Fiorentina making mistakes and dropping points, as opposed to us doing something spectacular. It absolutely shouldn't have come down to the last five games - not for a club like Milan.
But I agree with the slap thingy! In fact, I'd loved to have finished 11-12, maybe even lower, so as we just had the league to concentrate on. Otherwise, I half believe we'd have someone in the management come up and say: "Hey, at least we're in the top 25% teams of Serie A!".

Now that I think of it, it's amazing that the best defender and striker of their generation (and very possibly of all time), haven't played even one CL match together, despite being on the same team for a year-and-a-half. Quite, mind blowing, to be honest.
I was very excited the week before the first leg at Emirates, in the match when Ronaldo got injured. If only Carlo hadn't substituted Ronnie along with Inzaghi, our season could have been much, much better. With a much lethal attack a guaranteed victory against Arsenal, and I very much see us beating the current Chelsea lineup for a place in the semis. After that it's any body's chance - just three good games, and old big-ears is in the bag. Again.
But oh well, dream on. You can't have everything in life, right?

I used to kind of get ticked off by that ... But well, as Don Ceseare said when asked about why Carlo plays two DMs and why he subs a DM for a DM during a game ... He said that this is pure Capello/Lippi style ... Their philosophy is that a DM brings the ball back faster and start an attack, and when caught in a counter attack a DM can break it up, steal the ball and push for attack ...
I used to question just like you .. why ? why does Carlo insist on this type of line up, but in the end of the day (set aside this one poor season) he is a master tactician and I am very confident that he is not playing Broochi just for the hell of it. I'm sure he opts for him, cuz he adds further balance to the line up.
About Gourcuff ... Personally speaking, he hasn't lived up to expectations. His physic is good, technically he is good, but he doesn't add any spice to the game.

I agree with the theory, but the fact that our defensive mids are really off form right now needs to be put into consideration. The fact that in some games they were losing the ball more then actually winning it also need to be put into consideration.
And if this is what Carlo intends to do then I would play Emerson instead of Brocchi, he's much better at actually winning the ball and moving it quickly, he's got much more technique then either Ambro or Brocchi. All Brocchi does is run around like a headless chicken

Well han, I think that is down to the players
... The coach asks them to do something, if they are not at 100% concentration/fitness/etc and their opposition are at 100%, then some things might go wrong ...
I prefer Emerson too, but from what I have seen Broochi can help out more in the offensive department too (taking into consideration what he did @ Fiorentina).

Agreed but the coach should know what condition his players are in and if he sees that they are not up to standards for them to play in the position he is going to give them then he should adapt another system.
Lastseason it worked so well because both Ambro and Rino were in great form during this time of the season thus freeing Pirlo to only do what he is supposed to do, this season them being in the form their in has not only lead to the formation not working but also to Pirlo being put under so much strain that at times he's seemed like he might keel over if he ran a few more steps in a game
Brocchi was an attacking mid in his days at inter, but I personally don't see it on him at all. Emerson has that Brazilian quality to him that even though he is a defensive mid, he knows how to win the ball quickly and makes quick decisions of either moving the ball forward himself or distributing it quickly.

Baretto goal. It really was a nice strike.
Nice moment toward the end of the half: the ref was going to give a goal kick after Pirlo's shot but Reggina keeper Campagnolo admitted that he'd gotten a touch on the ball and so the ref gave a corner to Milan. Applause from the tifosi for the good sportsmanship.

In general, I think the team has looked pretty good. Passing is crisp, movement is good. There were a couple of shaky moments in the defense but nothing shockingly poor - and no Kaladzities. I don't think we can really blame anyone for Baretto's goal. That one was a wonder strike.
btw, shot of the pitch at halftime. I think Pato was among the Milan players warming up.

Very good first half ... Nothing could have been done to stop the one conceded.
Our defense was not at it's best, but the midfield is doing pretty well to shake up those counter attacks.
Reggina are playing a 3-4-1-2 formation. I think Carlo (overall) got the better of his counterpart in this half. But there is still another 45 mins to go.
Forza Milan !

I'm not too big a fan of French football - or footballers for that matter - but shtick happened with Gorcuff. And the coach has to share a part of the blame. Sell or loan him if he doesn't figure into your plan, but please, no one has the right to play with someone's career.

Yeah, he's got this uncanny habit of getting forward every now and then. Quite a little bundle of energy that guy, huh? Don't like him much, to be honest, but he's good for a laugh every once and again. The guy's got zero talent and skills, but makes up for it with his hard work. He's a decent sub option, though.
And guys, don't get carried away with the result, we've seen this too often. 5-1, and then slipping away.
We'll have to wait and see whether we continue this form in the coming matches, plus what part luck plays in it - considering that we've played some good games, and still came out on the losing side.
And oh, Kaka is the shtick! And Kala, well he's just plain shtick.

Kaka Rips Apart Reggina
Milan 5-1 Reggina
Kaka produced a stunning individual performance, helping himself to a hat-trick as Milan thumped Reggina 5-1 at San Siro.

galleria zoom Milan knew they simply had to win this game in order to keep their Champions League qualifying hopes alive, but they were without the injured Paolo Maldini, Marek Jankulovski, Emerson and Ronaldo. Daniele Bonera and Massimo Ambrosini were suspended.
Reggina were minus the injured Jose Montiel and Maurizio Lanzaro, while Emmanel Cascione was serving a ban.
Milan had a half-chance in the first minute, as the ball fell to Christian Brocchi in the area, and the midfielder smashed a half volley into the sidenetting.
Reggina’s intentions were clear from the start, as they sat back and tried to launch counter-raids. A fine eight-pass move ended with Francesco Cozza drilling wide from 25 yards.
Milan broke the deadlock on eight minutes, as Kaka was upended by in the area by Francesco Modesto following a mazy run. The Brazilian picked himself up and sent Andrea Campagnolo the wrong way.
Kaka immediately looked for a second and his cross-shot almost looped over Campagnolo, who tipped the ball over. From the resulting corner, Pippo Inzaghi headed over.
Campagnolo was a busy man and this time he had to save with his feet to deny Kakha Kaladze after Andrea Pirlo's brilliant through pass.
Kaka meanwhile was unstoppable. He raced past Edgar Barreto and shot wide, before volleying another effort over.
Reggina tried to work their way into the game, and Luca Vigiani found space for a shot, but Zeljko Kalac was equal to his effort.
Inzaghi was busy as usual up-front, and he got in front of his man to head wide from Cafu’s right-wing cross. The link-up play between Inzaghi and Kaka was superb at times, and on the half-hour mark, the two combined for the Brazilian to volley a thumping an effort that was excellently saved by Campagnolo.
Just moments later Milan found their second goal, as Clarence Seedorf nutmegged Vigiani before the Reggina midfielder brought him down. Again Kaka stepped up, and again he sent Campagnolo the wrong way, this time placing the ball in the opposite corner.
It seemed all too easy for Milan, but Reggina got back into the game on 39 minutes as Edgar Barreto unleashed a stunning 30 yard strike that flew into the top corner like a ballistic missile.
Reggina could have then found an equalizer as Franco Brienza scuffed a shot wide, following some uncertainty in the Milan defence.
Just before half time, Milan were twice inches away from regaining their two-goal cushion. First Seedorf fired a vicious 30-yard shot inches wide, before Campagnolo pulled off another great save, finger-tipping a Pirlo curler around the post.
Reggina had a blow at the start of the second half, as their goalscorer Barreto was stretchered off in agony with a knee injury, and was replaced by Simone Missiroli.
Inzaghi lost his man inside the box, but could not direct Brocchi’s cross on target, while Kaka went on another slalom run before he was eventually stopped by Luca Tognozzi.
Reggina were still creating chances of their own though every now and then, and Vigiani headed over from just two yards out, following a corner from the left.
Inzaghi was a constant nuisance for the Reggina defence, and he wriggled past Carlos Valdez, before scuffing the ball wide.
Campagnolo again kept his side in the game just past the hour mark, as he flicked Pirlo’s swerving shot over the bar. Inzaghi then raced through on goal following a delightful Kaka back-flick but Campagnolo denied the striker with his feet.
Down the other end a mistake by Alessandro Nesta eventually led to Cozza heading over from just a few yards out.
On 68 minutes Milan finally restored their two-goal advantage as the ball broke to Kaka inside the area, and he curled a low shot into the far corner to complete a superb hat-trick.
Reggina refused to give in, and Cozza forced a smart stop out of Kalac at his near post from a fee-kick, before there were huge claims for a penalty following an apparent hand ball by Kaladze inside the area.
On 73 minutes the game was well and truly put beyond doubt as Inzaghi finally got the goal he deserved. Substitute Alexandre Pato crashed a shot against the post, and SuperPippo reacted quickest to put away the rebound.
Inzaghi then missed a chance to grab a second as he scuffed a volley after more good work by Pato.
Just two minutes from time Milan added further gloss to the scoreline by adding a fifth goal. Pato, who had been lively since coming on, headed into the top corner from substitute Yoann Gourcuff’s cross.
The final whistle sounded soon after, as the Rossoneri stay in the hunt for a Champions League place.
Milan: Kalac, Cafu (Simic 76), Nesta, Kaladze, Favalli, Gattuso (Gourcuff 80), Pirlo, Brocchi, Kaka, Seedorf (Pato 68), Inzaghi
Reggina: Campagnolo, Valdez (Alvarez 69), Cirillo, Aronica, Vigiani, Barreto (Missiroli 47), Tognozzi, Modesto (Costa 82), Cozza, Brienza, Amoruso

Brocchi actually was an attacking mid in his days at Inter, to be honest I don't actually know what his position is, he's not that strong as a defensive mid either, I don't see him winning balls in midfield, he hasn't got a creative bone in his body to be considered a typical central mid and he's definately not an attacking midfielder.
Imo I see him more as a right wingback type player, he can run, cross the ball in decently, mildly decent in defence (like all typical wingbacks).

Agree with the ratings. Kaka deserved a 9, while Gorcuff earned the 6. The rest all are unsurprisingly high too. I guess this has to one of the highest rated (in terms of averages) rating given to Milan by Datasport: no one's under 6.

It's certainly one of the highest overall ratings this season. The last one that had such universally high ratings - to my old memory at least - was last year's second semi v. Manchester. Lowest rating there was 6.

it was a workman like performance with the obvious difference being Kaka. Still Kalac gives me a heart attack anytime the ball goes near the box, Gourcuff done well in his cameo appearance but with Brocchi and Gattuso in the midfield together creativity isn't in abundance. Pirlo looked sharper but still far from his best and to be honest this game highlighted were we need to reinforce, Gk, full-backs and central midfield, but Don Silvio and all this talk of R10 and Sheva and another striker worries me as to what exactly will happen in the summer. Kaka, Pato, Paloschi and don't laugh Gilardino are surely young enough and good enough to just need 1 striker. We all know that are priority's lay else were and lets just hope sense prevails in the summer till then Forza Milan!

That probably wouldn't have been the case if the scoreline were somewhat closer.
