Anyway, if there is one player in Italy I would totally make a huge sacrifice for, that is Zaniolo. This kid is absolutely fantastic. Never has a player reminded me of Kaka' as much as he does. Whoever wants him needs to splash out 60M right now unless they want to pay double next summer.

No chance imo.

He'll probably go to Juve though, as per usual

We're being heavily linked with Aurier for the RB position. Thoughts?

Such great optimism.

I think the team has found its footing. It has developed a system, an identity, the players know what to do. They're not clueless chicken running around aimlessly anymore. They want to prove themselves. You don't get wins against Roma, Lazio and Juventus, and draws against Napoli and Atalanta just out of circumstance.

I'm optimistic. I think with the right signings we can strengthen our side even further and finally challenge for those top spots.

I agree.

I certainly think that an element of what Danny et al are saying has been a factor, as the fans were getting on their backs a lot in these past few years, understandable but imo it was always a mistake by the curva to go that way with such a young team.

But the way we've played these games imo has more to do with finding the right balance and system. We were already seeing a bit of that before the stop, for example in the Coppa game against Juve at home I thought we played immensely that night. I really do think Pioli has found a way to get this team working.

What matters most now is that Paolo finds the right players to upgrade the positions we were weak in this season. And I am really relieved as well that we're not going to be starting from zero again this coming season. Sticking with Pioli was the right call and will give us some much needed continuity

Don't know if anyone watched today. Won 4-1 vs Samp.

Basically a training game, but still nice to see us being so fluid in attack

Oh and you reminded me of T. Silva. Would be great if we could bring him in to do something similar to what Zlatan did in attack.

What issues at CB? Kjaer has been great, Musacchio will have recovered by next season. We hardly have any issues other than signing another good CB.

The real issue is the right wing. Do you or do you not realise that such a crucial position for a 4-2-3-1 formation is being occupied by people like Castillejo and Sale-maker? Downright mediocre to absolute crap. We need to focus all our attention on that position. CB, CF etc. are all secondary in comparison.

We've been forced to play with Gabbia on more occasions than I care to even think about

Duarte seems to be made of glass. Musacchio is also injury prone and last I read we were looking into selling him. Kjaer is going through a very good moment, no doubt, but I wouldn't feel comfortable going into a new season with the options we have. I still think giving Romagnoli a proper partner should be top of our list.

And I agree that RW is a critical position as well. But we're scoring freely right now even with the mediocre options at present. Both Samu and the salesman seem to be giving Pioli what he needs to make the attack function. But atm, our left side is like a Ferrari while our right side is a Fiat. We need to fix this as it is the foundation of our team.

Yes, Castillejo as sub would be fine. But I think we need to spend big on this one. It doesn't necessarily have to be a big name, which is out of our possibilities anyway, but someone young with great prospect. Someone like Boga (cost around 40M), although I would prefer a left-footed winger. When you're playing 4-2-3-1 having inverted wingers who can cut in on their preferred foot can make a world of difference.

Sadly in this market, even someone who's not a big name will cost a lot. I can't see us spending 40m on just this position though, especially considering the issues we have at CB

I don't really care if it is a right/left footed player, the most important thing for me is that he's fast and technical. Suso was left footed, but he was slow and therefore slowed down the play too much by always cutting in.

I agree that the supporters tend to get annoying, booing used to work when we had players like Seedorf, Pirlo, Rino, etc. They stood up to the challenge from the fans.

But the curva has to understand that this is a very young group, and booing is counter productive. It crushes their spirits rather than helping to boost them into action. The fans, especially the ultras need to learn how to get behind the team, and not just when things are going well.

That being said, I think the kind of form we're in, having the stadium full right now would probably be an added boost

1. Yes
2. For me this should be the priority. Having people like Castillejo and Sale-maker in there really robs us of one extra man.
3. The least important spot to fill. Calabria has been playing well.
4. This depends on what happens with Ibra. If he stays, then I can't see us making an important signing. But if he leaves, we need an absolutely top striker there.
5. Yes. Biglia was so, so bad last night, and Krunic is just crap.
6. Yes.

I think Samu is an okay back up. Salemakers is just another Borini, decent utility but nothing else. I'd personally like to see us keeping Samu as the backup, sell Salemaker and get in someone good for that RW. Jeremy Boga or I'd even look into Deulefeu. I can't see us spending big here, but someone who's fast with good technique should be the goal

Sadly we'll probably sell Calabria instead of Conti if we get a new starting RB, which is something the management is currently working on going by the rumours. I'd prefer to keep Calabria, as Conti is just not my cup of tea, but the financial benefit of selling Calabria will dictate that we sell him rather than Conti.

I think even if Ibra stays (which is looking more and more likely) I think we should get someone in this summer who's capable of taking over. Ibra will not be able to play all the games and while there is Leao, he's still to green. And I really want to avoid us having to face the void Ibra will leave when he moves on. We've already experienced that in the past and suffered the consequences. Thinking ahead here is crucial.

I read we’ll have a 100M budget for the mercato. And that we’re interested in Tonali.

Tonali and Bennacer in the pivot wold be interesting for sure, but Kessie has improved so much in this new role. I'd really question spending so much money on Tonali at this point.

For me priority goes as follows for what positions to focus on

1. Starting CB
2. Starting RW
3. Starting RB
4. CF (who can take over for Ibra)
5. 2 Backup DM (Krunic and Biglia are simply not up to the task)
6. Backup LB (Laxalt simply does not cut it)

Media is hyping Hakan’s performance last night, but I thought he was just average. He’s very inconsistent, just like Kessie. But Kessie last night actually stepped up aside from a few brainfart moments.

Our run post-lockdown has been that of a scudetto challenger, but obviously we can’t keep up such form for the entirety of next season. Expectations have to be CL qualification, and with a few quality signings we can easily achieve that.

I think Hakan has been very consistent since the restart. Obviously he's not going to be flawless in every game but the stats speak for themselves. And considering how very inconsistent he's been for us. This run of games has been very promising. I think switching him to the center is the main reason, add to that having players like Ibra, Rebic and Theo around him who are continuously providing him with passing options due to their movements and imo that's the major reason for his improvement

Players having a bit of an off game at this point for me is expected. Fatigue has got to be setting in, having said that, we've looked the fitter side against every team we've faced so far, so I have to commend Pioli and his technical staff as we generally tend to struggle with fitness levels but compared to other teams we've looked really good

Kessie also has been having a great run.

Now that Ragnick is not coming, I think we'll take a more measured approach in the transfer market.

Seems we're interested in Emerson Royal for the RB position and Roca as their agents were at Casa Milan yesterday.

CB has to be a key position to upgrade this summer as well as RW

Result is great, game so-so. Yes, we had important injuries, but I think Atalanta just like Napoli are perhaps the worst team we could possibly face. Not only because they've been great for two years in a row now, but rather because they have incredible intensity in their pressing and play very fast.

Anyway, season for us was over since after Sassuolo. These last few games are just to determined whether we'll go directly into EL or we'll go through the play-offs first.

Yep, we tend to struggle against both Atalanta and Napoli because of the way they play. But considering we were missing 3 of our best defensive players, it was still an excellent result.

And I do agree, the season is basically done and dusted now. And we need to look ahead to September.

The core group of this team is very good. We need to make sure to keep all of them.

Priorities for the transfer market should be as follows:

  • Convince Ibra to stay for one more season
  • Players with contracts running down who are integral to the system should be renewed

  1. 2020: Bona (not integral but still a very important bench player), Ibra
  2. 2021: Rebic (end of loan deal), Hakan, G. Donna
  3. 2022: Romagnoli, Kessie
  4. Look into contracts like Theo's and Bennacer, sure both have a long way to go, but I read Bennacer has a release clause, we need to make sure to ratify such loop holes and keep both players happy

  • Sign a top notch CB to partner Romagnoli. Kjear has been good, but next season he should be a rotation option. The fact that Gabbia has to step in when either Romagnoli or Kjear are injured is anxiety inducing to say the least
  • Sign a RB and sell Conti/Calabria. I'd rather keep Calabria but selling him would be more financially beneficial since he's Primavera
  • Sign a RW, Jeremy Boga would be excellent imo and won't cost an arm and a leg
  • Sign proper backups for Kessie and Bennacer.
  • Sign a striker that's good enough to take over from Ibra, whether he leaves now or next year, we have to prepare.

Oh true, I forgot about the Napoli thing, so yes it doesn't matter.

What do think about the manager? Would you prefer pioli or ragnick?

Pioli

Ragnick is a complete unknown at this point. We'll be starting back from zero again next season and it just leaves a bitter taste in the mouth considering the things Pioli has done with this team.

I'd gladly take Ragnick as the sporting Director to work alongside Paolo. Because he would be a great asset to have. But this Fergie type role that is being propositioned worries me a lot.

I don't think we should discard Pioli, he should be given the chance to continue to build on what he's done this season, but with the added benefit of having someone like Ragnick bringing in the talent.

Add to that, I don't like the fact that what we're offering Paolo is basically an ambassador position when h's brought in some impeccable talent that has doubled in value since last summer. Giampaolo was his only mistake but will prove to be fatal in the end.

Indeed, honestly will depend on Roma and Napoli's results.

What does it really matter though whether we get 5th or stay 7th?

All positions get you into the EL if I am not mistaken since Napoli won the Coppa. At this point it's just a shame that we don't have a few more games to go because at this rate we would take Lazio's 4th spot if we had a bit more time to do it in.

Sadly this season was ruined during Giampaolo's ill-fated tenure

QUOTE (X-Offender @ Jul 5 2020, 07:01 PM) *
Look, I've been one of Kessie's fiercest critics around here, and he did screw up many attacks when he was played as mezz'ala. But ever since he's been playing in the double pivot he's been less involved in our attacking play, and hence his passing has also improved a bit.

Yesterday he actually made 49 passes, with a 96% pass accuracy.

He still doesn't convince me, and I think we should replace him, but let's not criticise him for things that are not his fault. Ibra, Rebic, Hakan, Paqueta, Bonaventura and Sale-maker made many errors last night, and they're supposed to be our most technically gifted players.

I actually think he just prefers Sale-maker and Bonaventura now. He wants to be cautious.

I'm not disregarding Kessie's other qualities, he's been playing well since the restart, but for as long as he's been with this team, his decision making has been one of his biggest weaknesses. I'm not just talking about that game in particular

As for Pioli, I don't think he prefers Bona and Salemakers, ahead of Ibra and Rebic. Ibra is our driving force while Rebic is stone cold. We need both, but they both have to be rotated due to Ibra's age and Rebic's playing style, which probably takes a lot out of him due to the energy he expands in each game

A side note, what a game against Juve, I was this close to switching off due to the time and having to wake up early the following morning and was pretty sure it was all over as soon a CR7 scored. What a turnaround though.

Quick mentions.

Bennacer, has been imo one of our best signings last summer, what a player he's turned out to be for us.

Hakan has been great as well. Ever since the restart he's been a completely different player to the guy we've had for these past couple of years. I really would have to pin this on the Ibra effect

Kjear as well has been top notch, I hope we sign him. He'd be a great rotation option next season if we manage to finally get Romagnoli a proper partner

I think it's a strange moment in the league. All clubs are coming from three months of total inactivity, fatigue becomes very evident. Not to mention the heat can also be detrimental. The empty stadiums almost make it seem like training sessions sometimes.

More than Kessie tonight, I'd say the attacking four.

I would have played Hakan and Paqueta on the sides with Rebic and Ibra in attack. Like we were playing before the break. I'd never start Bonaventura.

Agreed re the games feeling like training, or early summer friendlies. It has to feel that way for the players as well which would probably make it difficult to get high intensity performances. That being said, this is usually a problem for us even without 3 months of quarantine. We tend to switch off in one game, play well in another, rinse repeat

Agreed about the front 4, but Kessie is usually the most frustrating one for me, not just in this game. The bad passing decisions in attack is why we rarely score off counters

I think Pioli is trying to rotate as much as he can to keep everyone fresh, especially considering the heat, inactivity and the insane schedule the players have to contend with during this next month to try to close out the season. The decision to not play Rebic with Ibra I think mostly has to do with looking ahead to having to play Juve and Napoli within the next 6 days

Anyway, it feels good taking the scalp off both Roman teams within a few days.

Too bad about those 2 points against SPAL, we'd be in a better position going into the Juve game had we not botched it on Wednesday

Really? I thought it was clear as day that Lazio were completely inexistent tonight. They were even worse than SPAL.

Meh, I can't always tell with this team, it's like we'e Jekyll and Hyde. Honestly, when I looked at our fixtures starting from the Roma game, the only 3 points I would have bet money on in the 5 games starting with Roma would have been SPAL, so go figure that we lose points in just that one so far.

QUOTE (X-Offender @ Jul 4 2020, 10:44 PM) *
I have to say, despite the three goals, the mistakes our players make when attacking sometimes are mind-boggling. It's like they forget they're professional footballers and are playing on the beach or something. And I'm not talking about Hernandez's insane miss (who, despite that, was really good tonight). I refer to many instances when the pass is so wrong it almost makes it seem intentional.

Agreed 100%. Kessie for me is the chief culprit of such moments, but the others are guilty as well

QUOTE (X-Offender @ Jul 4 2020, 10:44 PM) *
He's decent in that he's not terrible. I call that average. He's not great team material.

That's what I was implying. He's doing the job adequately imo considering we don't really have many options to go with, especially with Samu also injured now
