QUOTE (Danny @ Mar 30 2019, 04:31 PM) Suffered this one with Jack earlier - it's my contention since about 2012 we've signed one traditionally Milan-level player, and that's Piatek. Look at all our 'best' players - Jack, Suso, Romagnoli - these are not great players, they're decent and no more. Best players get big clubs bidding big cash for them. Not sure a single one of these guys has had a single bid aimed at them. Yeah, we're sh*te (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I agree with some of what you have said here but if you don't think Romagnoli is a great player you are way off the mark. Also, your second comment nullifies the first, you're saying that if a big club threw $50M at us for Suso that would make him a great player? Players like Andy Carroll, Benteke, Mustafi, Bernardeschi have all gone for $40M+ does that make them all great players because someone wanted to splash some cash? I'm not saying that these players are superstars on par with the Kakas, Pirlos, Maldinis, Shevchenkos, and Nestas of the world but that doesn't mean they are **** players who can't achieve anything. If you don't believe me check that Porto team that won the CL in 04, or the Italy team under Conte that made a run in the Euros to see what good coaching and a smart system can do. I'm not saying that this squad could win the CL but to toss them ALL aside as decent and no more is an overreaction. 9 out of 10 teams in the world would kill to have Romagnoli and the same goes for Donnaruma. Other players have amazing potential (See Calabria, Paqueta, Conti, Kessie, Bakayoko, Piatek). I do agree that the Chinese summer was mostly just spending money for spending's sake and most of those players have not turned into what we thought they would be, but things are looking up with the new management and the transfers of Piatek, Paqueta (first great midfield purchase in a long time) and Bakayoko. As most things, the moves that were made look poor in hindsight but at the time they were considered to be smart signings. Calha was one of the more promising, dangerous playmakers in Germany, RR was a very highly regarded LB, Kessie had just put on a show in Serie A with Atalanta, Conti the same, Biglia was a calming presence and leader in midfield and Bonucci was considered by most as some of the best business of the summer. I would argue that the real issue that we have had has been the lack of a coach with tactical nuance some creativity. I love Gattuso and I think he should be given the year to see what happens but he is not a tactical genius. He is a motivator which can only take you so far. Overall we have had two poor games back to back where we seemed to have run out of ideas and dried up but this team is also lacking. We have 1 good creator from midfield and he is a kid coming into his own. Our team is very young, sometimes young teams struggle but we are most definitely on the upswing. Making CL and bringing in some reinforcements will do wonders for this squad. If we get back to winning ways there is still hope from this season. We are on track to meet our goals for the first time in a long time. Rome wasn't built in a day now is the time to be patient, not rash. Hopefully we make the CL and when the summer comes we make savvy moves that help move the needle. We aren't winning the CL next year but it would be great if 1) we were in it and 2) we showed some fire and made some noise. |

Kessie can hardly be considered a useless player in a big team. To me he is Vidal or Matuidi-lite. He is a box-to-box midfielder who plays with tenacity and physicality. Not a refined passer, nor a pure anchor. Both of those guys truly shine when they play next to players who can bring some creativity to the team. As for not finding a place in the top sides that is wild. Every team needs a player who is going to endlessly run around and provide to both the attacking and defensive phase Kessie is that player for us.
Kessie needs time more than anything. Neither Vidal nor Matuidi came into their own skin until age ~24 but once they rounded out their games and matured a bit they have played for all of the top sides (Barca, PSG, Bayern, Juve), and have played critical roles. Wait until Kessie irons out those few kinks to his game and the midfield to bring in some creativity and you will see how important he is. With Paqueta bringing confidence, flair, and passing ability it will elevate Kessie's game. Soon enough Kessie will be back in the goals and his confidence will rise. |

Yeah, I like that set-up, in a way it reminds me of Ancelotti's Milan-lite. Fabregas as the Pirlo, Kessie as a Gattuso-type, and Paqueta as a Seedorf-lite.
Only changes I would make when everyone is fit would be Calabria over Conti. I think Calabria has earned the starting spot for now and Conti is the one who has to work to take it from him. For me, Calabria fits well within the team. Sometimes he has mental mistakes in defense but going forward he has proven to be an asset down that right wing.
Also, this formation leaves us a little exposed down that left side. From what I have seen of Paqueta he likes to scamper forward and he definitely won't be joining us with the physically-imposing, endless running that Kessie provides. We know Ibra won't be tracking back. RR has had a good season thus far but this would leave him isolated. Add-in that he likes to go forward and will see open field ahead of him to deliver crosses into Ibra and we have a recipe for getting burned on the counter. |

Such a disappointment. I am fuming with this team today. Looks like Gattuso still hasn't found out which players he can throw into a game to change it for us. Our bench is sparse and you would think Bakayoko would help solidify that midfield but he just doesn't bring any steel into the team.
We need upgrades in the winter window. Should have had all three points today.
Looking on the bright side we had a few players play well today, namely Suso, Higuain, and Bona.
I was thinking throughout the game that our cbs were playing well but you can't concede two goals like that. Calabria is one of the best rbs in the league going forward but his marking is poor on crosses. RR is similar. Kessie provides endless running and sometimes looks like a monster sometimes he looks scared and flat. Biglia was also playing well but lost the plot at the end of the game, you would think a general with his qualities would be able to command two runners like Kessie and Baka but he loses his nerve at the end of the game.
Calhanoglu was poor today looked completely lost, hasn't really found his groove with Higuain yet, while Suso has. Donna looked awful on the corners and crosses. For a 6'5" guy you would think he would own everything in the air but he looks so shaky and confused.
Gattuso did well today, the Abate sub was the right one and in theory so was the Baka sub. I would have thrown Laxalt on instead of Samu if he planned to just close out the game because Laxalt runs for days.
Overall the team doesn't know how to play like a big team. A big team kills that game off and knows how to hold up the ball and slow things down. We do not know how to do that.
Going forward I want to see Caldara start. Mussachio has been okay but our defense has been shaky. Since that is the reality I would rather see the young future star in Caldara over Mussachio. |

Yeah, I agree that the midfield is a little sparse. I was really hoping for the mid from Real - Ceballos. For me, he would fit in really well in our midfield and would provide a creative element we haven't had in a long time. Also, he would make losing Loca a bit easier to take. I would be over the moon to get either him or Barella from Cagliari as a young mid to bring some creativity.
I had such high hopes for him - really thought he would be one to take the next step but his game never evolved the way I expected it to. Does anyone have a good idea of the Primavera - who is the next kid to take a step up? I feel like we have had a youngster pop up once a year into the first team for the past 5 or so years. (De Sciglio, Donnaruma, Calabria, Locatelli, Cutrone) Just wondering if anyone has an idea of who could possibly make the jump this year. |

Addressing Fillipo - I personally feel better at the end of this year then I did last year. Let me explain why:
Coach: Major Upgrade - I know on the surface it doesn't seem like we upgraded here but I think we have. Gattuso brings something that Montella did. Both coaches are meh tacticians. But nowadays how many coaches are truly amazing tacticians? A small handful, a very small handful. But Gattuso brings something that other coaches (Montella) lack. He brings passion, zeal, and anger. When the team loses and plays awfully he holds players (and himself) accountable. He incites something in players when there are no true champions in the locker room having someone like that can inspire players to play out of their skin. Look at Conte. When he began Juve were not in a good spot, he had a few champions but he was the one who lit a fire under those players.
It's a long ride to get back to the top. In my life, I got to see Milan in 3 CL finals and win two of them. This is incredibly lucky on its own - very few teams can achieve this even with all of the money in the world. Look at Bayern and PSG and City. All of the money and superstars on superstars, but that can't buy championships. The best teams grow senators establish a culture and try and catch the next wave and ride it out to the CL. We have been believing in our academy for years and it is beginning to bear fruit.
How many teams in Serie A have the players with the potential that we have? Maybe Juve? No other team has so many of their own homegrown players in the team and showing promise. Let the boys grow into men. Let the coach grow into a tactician supplement them with players who can help in the short term and invest for the future.
We are just starting on the path. We were bought last year they have had 1 summer and 1 technical director get a shot at this. Look at Napoli, how many years have they come close and every year they run it back with a tweak or two. Look at Rome, same thing. This path takes time but of those teams who have their own youth in the team that have a real chance of blossoming into something. We have Donna, Romag, Calabria, Loca, Kessie, Calhanoglu, Suso, Cutro, Silva. All of those guys have potential and next year will be better than this year.
This project will take baby steps and patience, a smart move here and there, and tons of luck. But I see the future being bright for us. Keep the faith. The longer the climb the better the view from the top.
I have been feeling the same way as you for parts of this season but I look at my father a lifelong Inter fan, he saw some good years, some poor years. Finally, in 2010, he got to see them win the treble and even talking about that memory brings sheer joy to the man. We will be back. Not this year, maybe not next year but soon it will be our time again and we will revel in it because of the grind it took to get there. |

Yeah, I agree, I think Donna has more potential than any other young gk in the world and it isn't even close but before all of the Raiola nonsense, he could do no wrong. I would rather have a cheaper gk (Perin) and use the money we could get from his sale to build up the rest of the team.
When he only loved Milan and didn't care about the money poor performances by him were something you deal with. Now that things are different, I feel like the patience is less. He is getting paid to play really well he needs to show it. Even if he was getting paid this much but he was our hero, and he actually loved the team it was all easier to swallow. I have readied myself for the time that he wears a different shirt and all I can really see in him now is ~80 Million that could be used elsewhere.
That being said he has been quiet recently, done his job and before today been a star gk for the past few weeks.
As for the first goal, there were two clear fouls in the box. The ref completely ignored them, and when Bona was counterattacking right before that another clear foul was ignored. Hard to blame the ref, but Juve will never get the benefit of the doubt and decisions and performances like this where they are "helped" will only perpetuate the narrative. |

I see Depay as a Gervinho type signing. He wasn't thought of as being a great player in the Premier League but when he came to Rome he lit it up with pace. He wasn't a world class player but he brought them results against Serie A teams.
Depay can do the same, his pace and creativity could do wonders against Serie A sides. He may not be the guy to help us throttle Real Madrid or Bayern, but players who can do that only come to teams who are playing in the CL already they don't come to help teams get there. Unfortunately, we are in the latter position. We need guys who can help us beat the provincial sides to get the points to make the CL.
We need to take chances on the Hakan, Depay, type. The out-of-favor or big team reject looking for that chance to prove themselves. Those guys come at a cut-price and with enough of them you build a winner. Add in some of the better performers in Serie A who would want to play here (or we can afford) (Belotti, Chiesa, Anderson, Jankto, Barella). Finally, throw in our own youth players and a lucky bounce or two, (Donna, Bonucci, Romag.) I think with this formula we can build a team that can get us to the CL. Then we have to drop the big $$ to get a game changer or a superstar young player.
There are very few players who can beat a top side on their own but if the team as a whole gets better and has a strong identity then they can manage beating the bigger Serie A teams. Depay & Belotti can help us take the next step to the CL IMO. |
