All the English Premier League talk here!

Posted by: Portikins Aug 19 2006, 03:16 PM

It started today with... Sheffield 1-1 Liverpool ohmy.gif

They have some injuries, but it's a shame for them to draw agains Sheffield.

Now it's Arsenal-Villa playing in the New Highbury!

Posted by: dst Aug 19 2006, 03:27 PM

at last I think this will be the first ever not-boring Premiership!!!!!
it was back in '96 when there was some real interest on who's going to win.
I think Chelsea will find it really hard to be crowned champions again; their bench is not as good as it used to be and they obviously bought players to go for the CL!!!!
Liverpool ... well even though they drew today I think they'll be good contesters while Man U will have to depend on a great season from Rooney.Arsenal will be great in the EPL too, while they'll hardly have a CL year as good as the last one ...

Posted by: Portikins Aug 19 2006, 03:33 PM

Yup. Liverpool, ManUtd and Arsenal are with good teams. Don't need talk about Chelski.

Posted by: Portikins Aug 19 2006, 05:04 PM

Arsenal drew 1-1 too. laugh.gif

Man. Utd. 5 - 1 Fulham

I watched the 2nd half and I have to say I'm impressed. United played a fantsatic match. Rooney was unstoppable.

Chelsea 3:0 City. Sheva was mediocre

Posted by: X-Offender Aug 20 2006, 06:59 PM

Yeah, he had a bad game. Essien was man of the match IMO.

Posted by: LaPalma Aug 20 2006, 10:50 PM

I have seen the highlights on durch tv. Essien was good, so was Lampard...and yap Sheva wasn' shining at all biggrin.gif

Pedro Mendes is a good guy. He was some matches on the portuguese NT I think.

He did not deserve that. If that happened to Ronaldo, Rooney, Zlatan, Tevez, Gattuso, Vieira, Keane... bad boys, I wouldn't be surprise but Mendes?

I hope some match bans from the FA.

What a idiot this Thatcher is.

Posted by: misha Aug 25 2006, 01:17 AM

QUOTE
The FA and Greater Manchester police are investigating Ben Thatcher's elbow-first challenge that hospitalised Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes during Thursday's Premier League game.

Manchester City defender Thatcher was booked after crashing into the Portuguese midfielder early in the second half of the goalless match as both players chased a ball over the touchline.

Mendes was knocked unconscious and suffered a seizure. The incident was replayed relentlessly on TV on Friday.

As Thatcher was cautioned for the offence it would normally fall outside the FA's remit for punishment by video evidence but a spokesman said that officials were investigating their own disciplinary regulations to see if there was an option for treating it as an exceptional case.

City issued a statement on Friday containing an apology from Thatcher.

"Manchester City can confirm that Ben Thatcher has personally written a letter to Pedro Mendes to apologise to him following the tackle in the match last night," it said.

"The club does not condone such action and the matter has been dealt with internally by (manager) Stuart Pearce."

The incident infuriated Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp who said after the game: "What do you have to do to get a red card these days, kill someone?

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said they were investigating the incident after receiving complaints.

On-pitch confrontations rarely pass beyond an initial police investigation, although last month Lee Bowyer was fined $NZ1700 plus costs by magistrates after pleading guilty to threatening behaviour after he punched former Newcastle United team mate Kieron Dyer during a match last year.

Shevchenko will be reminising the Milan days .. If Chelsea fails to live up to it's expectations.

Chelsea has a very strong side and I can put money on this, that they will close the season by winning it. I mean this team has proved it; maybe a slap on the face was all that was needed for them to kick start their winning ways.

*fingers crossed* hope we get to play them in the CL .. devilsmiley.gif

Manchester United look a strong team again this year, 5-1 and 3-0 in their first 2 games, C.Ronaldo just looks incredible since the start of the season the boo's in England are just making him an even better player.

I think Chelsea may have some competition this year...

C.Ronaldo is very different in ManUtd, and in the NT. In the NT he can do whatever he wants, show-off, all you know... just for the photos, girls, etc.

In ManUtd he's very quite not "sh1tting" the team-play, just thinking on the match and playing good football (what he knows).

Even though I don't like united I hate Chelsea even more so, I'm with you on this one, I really hope they keep winning and maybe chalsea can take a tumble again.

And why hasn't Sheva scored again yet? I really want to see him score, to see if my theory about him is right, because so far every time he has scored a goal chelsea have lost, however this is just based on 2 games.

I don't think he can adapt to the way Chelsea plays, perhaps he's used to Milan's formation ... he better off playing with a poacher rather than a player with similar style

Isn't that basically how all the english teams play, accept for Arsenal!

A 'thing' laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

They should attach something to the floor in fron of the opposing net and when it's sensors feel the ball, it shoots it toward the net. At least they don't have to pay the thing any money, and it certainly won't get booed for diving.

Posted by: misha Sep 12 2006, 07:01 PM

It will take some time for him to adjust to the new league and new style (like to every player) but he is a smart player and you all will see him scoring and assisting a lot.

@han money is always involved but for him it's not a primary cause.

Posted by: Jack Sparrow Sep 12 2006, 07:07 PM

He wouldn't have gone for lesser wages. Gallas is the only person who I know of who did that....

It's the trend in modern football...what with careers being short and all.

Arsenal star Henry admits being Liverpool-mad
tribalfooball.com - September 22, 2006

Arsenal captain Thierry Henry admits if he couldn't play for the Gunners, he'd love to play for Liverpool alongside Steven Gerrard.

"A kid asked me on Wednesday if I would have liked to play for another team," the Arsenal and France striker said yesterday. "Straight away I said Liverpool.

"First of all, I would have loved to play with Steven Gerrard and second I like the club and their fans. There's something about Anfield that you can't explain.

"I love it when you step out of the dressing-room and you see the Kop, the scarves, and [hear people] singing You'll Never Walk Alone. Just that, that would do it for me.

"Obviously it can never happen because I love Arsenal too much. There can never be a possibility of playing anywhere else in England."

Henry was speaking at the launch of the Impact Art initiative for the Willow Foundation, the charity set up by Bob Wilson, the former Arsenal goalkeeper, that arranges special activities for seriously ill young adults.

Henry has donated the 27,000 prize for winning last season's Golden Boot to the foundation and his artwork will be auctioned.

Many players even rivals like Henry really likes Anfield/Liverpool. At least he has no problems to say the truth.

I don't think it's Mourinho's choice to keep playing Shevchenko .. I think it's Abramovic's choice ..

Cuz Mourinho is the type of manager that would play the players on form, and with the vast array of quality players at his disposal, I don't think it would be an issue to bench Shevchenko .. But then again, if he doesn't it's his @ss on the line wink.gif

Yup. It's obvious for anybody that it's not Mourinho who says who's in/out in Chelsea's market. On keeping Sheva... well, maybe Mr Abramovich wants that. Chelsea is a bit weird this season. IMO, if they win a single trophy, that'll be very good for them.

ppl said this from the very beginning of the 2005 season, that as long as Abramovic owns Chelsea, he owns the EPL .. I hope I'm not exagerating; there is no team that could do it the way Chelsea does it .. Juve u might say ? yeah with the help of Moggi, they did get consecutive league titles. But Chelsea are an over equipt squad .. I mean he has like 2 players to cover most positions on the field, and some even 3 players !!!

Chelsea's next goal is the CL, as Abramovic stated at the beginning of the season ( couldnt find the quote, but I read it somewhere ) .. Why not, they have 'THE perfect team'. And that doesnt mean the EPL isn't a given for them wink.gif

IMO, Chelsea's game has no taste to it .. I went to the Chelsea - Liverfool game last season at Stamford Bridge .. Their fans were the coldest I'v seen, they stand up every 15 mins say "Chelsea' 3 times then sit back down (what a bunch of idiots) .. It's like everything is for granted ! Ok excellent team, but so is Milan and the only difference between us is that we have that something extra that Abramovic can't buy, u know it, I know it, and every Milan fan on this site knows it wink.gif

Posted by: han2503 Oct 3 2006, 07:36 PM

THEY say it's hard to keep a good man down.
Well, it's harder even to imagine what ails Andriy Shevchenko.

It can't be the English weather? After all, he's been to Europe with Chelsea but it didn't make much of a difference.

So, what's with the big man? Is he carrying a dead leg? Has he suddenly become cross-eyed in front of goal?

Something's wrong. A 630 million ($89m) striker doesn't suddenly become soft. But that's exactly what we've been seeing.

Brought over from AC Milan to plunder the net, the paid assassin has suddenly become a dud.

So far he has been lucky. Chelsea players have come up in support of their misfiring colleague.

But for how long?

Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and John Obi Mikel all tried to boost the Ukrainian but it didn't seem to make a scrap of difference against Aston Villa on Saturday.

He was, like he has been since scoring against Boro on 23 Aug, a shy reflection of the sturdy, nimble-footed Ukranian who made great things happen for AC Milan in the Italian League.

Drogba, who scored Chelsea's only goal against Villa, did not abandon his strike partner.

Indeed, he said Shevchenko's arrival at Stamford Bridge was 'what the doctor ordered'.

'It gave me a huge injection of confidence,' said the Ivory Coast striker. At last, it was back to the system I was most accustomed to. There was Sheva and there was me. Two strikers.

'So far I have been the one who has scored the goals but I'm sure Sheva will start scoring very soon. Yes, we shouldn't be too harsh on him. The goals will come. He is that sort of player.'

Speaking on Match of the Day, former Liverpool and Scotland star Alan Hansen saw it differently and he seemed to come close to the mark when he said: 'He is heavy-legged. I don't think he can run that fast.

'At the World Cup, he'd been out for a long time and the argument was that he wasn't fit.

'I keep on hearing that he's going to score goals. I'm not so sure. So far he has not been great and when Michael Ballack and Joe Cole come back, I'm not sure he's going to play.'

Carlo Ancelotti, his coach at Milan, had kind words for his former striker and said he just needed time to find his feet at Chelsea.

'This is natural,' he said. 'It happens to anyone who changes environment after many years. He has to adjust.'

Others were not so sympathetic. Kakha Kaladze, Shevchenko's good buddy at AC Milan, had warned his friend that it was not going to be easy in England.

'I told him he was making a massive mistake signing for Chelsea,' said Kaladze. 'But I didn't push him to reject the offer.

'Now it breaks my heart to see him playing this way. He was a goal-scoring legend at the San Siro. Now he is a shell of his old self.'

Right now, most seem to be leaning on the side of tolerance. But, the question is, for how long?

Forza Kaladze! king.gif

So finally he got off the mark again, all be it a bit luckily, since if it didn't deflect James would have save that.

So do you think this was him breaking his duck or just another momentary lapse in his drought.

He still isn't playing that well, and disappeared, for huge moments in the match. Still a far cry from the old Sheva

I don't think he will ever return to being the old Sheva, and his game today was definately not perfect. But definately a big improvement, the shot he had save by James in the first half reminded me of the goal he scored against Inter in the CL a couple of sesons ago.

I don't know if this is the ice breaker for him, but I still have doubts

I don't think we can judge wether or not Sheva can ever get back to his old self, this goal doesn't prove anything about his current form or that it is the turn around for him.

He still wasn't having a good game, most of the time he would disappear, then pop up with a shot or pass.

I personally don't think he could ever be the Sheva that he was with us.

Nope, he'll never be the same, still the weight of his name and experience are enough wink.gif

I don't really care what happenes to him, I'm just curious to know if he can still do it; and he proved it today

I don't really think he proved anything today, he scored a luck goal and was completely free to place it perfectly, but he needed a defletion to put it in. Thatr is definately not the same Sheva that we are used to.

OInce I see a performance by him that I was used to seeing during his time with us then I will say that he has still got it, but right now, I'm still not convinced.

Well he has been desperate for a couple of weeks now.

The day I see a "milan oerformance" from him with atleast 2 goals, then he will convince me

Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool at the HT. Ronaldo and Crouch on the bench.

It's unbelievable how Benitez keep putting Gerrard on the right and Garcia in front of Sissoko and Alonso (it's obvious S.Gerrard should be there)

And this rotation system (98 consecutive games playing with a different 11) is definatly not working in England.

If Liverpool loses (as it seems to be) they'll be 11 points behind the leaders (ManUtd and Chelsea) and their season in PL will be over. (Fight for the 4th place...)

PS: For me, Liverpool have the 2nd best squad in England.

Petr Cech left hospital and returned home on Tuesday, 10 days after fracturing his skull in a collision with Reading's Stephen Hunt.

Goalkeeper Cech needed emergency surgery to insert two metal plates in his head after the clash in the first minute of Chelsea's game at the Madejski Stadium.

He is expected to be back at Chelsea's training ground in Surrey next week to begin the lengthy process of rehabilitation.

The Czech international goalkeeper, 24, has been told it will be three months before he can expect to train normally.

A Chelsea statement, released on the club website, said: "Chelsea FC is happy to announce that Petr Cech has returned home from hospital.

"He continues to make excellent progress from his injury and will continue his rehabilitation and return to light training at the Chelsea training ground next week.

"It is standard medical practice to allow three months for a fracture of the skull to repair fully and that is the time-scale we are all working to for a return to full training.

"It would be greatly appreciated if the media continue to respect the privacy of Petr and his wife."

That's called mastering the art of invisability wink.gif

But it's different, Sheva is the type of striker who normally get's involved inplays from the midfield, if Gila doesn't get the support he needs he would be easily faded out of the match.

But in a sense he is becoming what Gila was last season to us, although Gila was actaully scoring goals last season. So far Sheva has got something like 4 goals, and who has he scored them against, Watford, Bolton? And non of them where match winners, they all came when Chelsea where already winning by more then 2 goals.

If they win at home vs. Arsenal they'll be on the top of the group. If with that result + CSKA win in Hamburg = Arsenal out of the CL.

There's only 1 way to FCPorto go to UEFA. Lose at home against Arsenal and CSKA win.

Dubai firm in Reds takeover talks

A Dubai-based consortium has confirmed it is in exclusive talks about a takeover of Liverpool.

Dubai International Capital (DIC) is thought to be nearing a buy-out of the Anfield club worth £450m.

"Liverpool's investment requirements are well publicised," said chief executive Sameer al-Ansari, whose firm has begun to examine the club accounts.

"We hope we can agree a deal that will provide us with the opportunity to fund its needs both on and off the pitch."

No, we're not. Silvio bought Milan 20 years ago, and like mchanna said, he's italian. It's a complete different situation than the ones of Chelsea or Liverpool. Also, it's been a very long while since Silvio spent so much money like Abramovich is doing every year. Things have changed.

What difference it makes if the owner is Italian, Swedish or Black Metal fan????
Football turned to business and the clubs are companies now, so this is meaningless!
All that matters is the players, the heart you put in and Maldini biggrin.gif

Beckham tops rich list with £87m in the bank

David Beckham's value on the field of play may be on the wane, but the former England skipper remains peerless when it comes to football's high earners.

According to a survey of British footballers and foreign imports plying their trade in the Premiership, Beckham remains by far the games' richest exponent.

Top ten

Despite slipping down the pecking order at Real Madrid this season, Beckham tops the rich list poll with a figure of £87million, more than twice that of second-placed Michael Owen who is said to be worth £32m.

Beckham's personal fortune is down to his £4.4m a year contract with Real, which expires in the summer, along with income from advertising contracts with the likes of Gillette, Adidas and Pepsi. And despite losing lucrative deals with Vodafone and Police sunglasses, Beckham still found enough cash to pay himself a £19m salary out of the coffers of his company, Footwork Productions Ltd, last year.

Robbie Fowler, like Beckham, may be entering the twilight of his footballing career, but shrewd investments in the property market along with his Liverpool pay packet see the former England striker complete the top three with a £28m nest egg.

Chelsea's Andriy Shevchenko is the top foreign earner playing in England in seventh place, his £121,000-a-week deal at Stamford Bridge helping to swell his wealth to £22m, £1m ahead of Arsenal's Thierry Henry.

Another Chelsea summer import, Michael Ballack, completes the top 10 with with a relatively modest figure of £18m despite his £130,000-a-week deal.

The survey, in the current issue of FourFourTwo magazine (also highlights the amount of foreign money pouring into the Premiership, with overseas investors worth a staggering total of £13 billion.

That figure is set to touch the £20 billion mark should Dubai's billionaire ruler Sheik Mohammed complete his £450m takeover of Liverpool in the New Year.

But the wealthy Arab would have to settle for second place behind Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, whose own dealings in the world of oil see him top the list of wealthiest investors with a £10.8 billion fortune.

American investors Malcom Glazer and Randy Lerner come in fourth and seventh respectively in the poll of investors. Manchester United owner Glazer, 78, is said to be worth a wallet-bulging £1.05 billion while Villa's new Stateside sugar-daddy has a healthy £789m in the bank.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, is the figurehead of DIC, a state-owned private equity firm, and, as the fifth-richest man in the world, has been portrayed as a sugar daddy with the resources to outspend even Abramovich in the transfer market.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed_bin_Rashid_Al_Maktoum:
"His fortune is estimated to be in the region of $14 billion. [1] If he were listed on Forbes' list of The World's Richest People, he would rank 23rd, but Forbes does not list him because it is impossible to determine what belongs to him and what belongs to his government. On 4th December 2006 his Dubai International Capital (DIC) Investment Group has engaged in takeover negotiations for Liverpool Football Club in a deal rumoured to be worth £479m.

His wealth is said to be more than the $14billion that is listed, the $14 billion is "family money", he has a personal wealth of $13.8 billion which would take his net worth up to $27.8 billion(£14 billion) which would put him 5th in the worlds rich list"

Well it was great but the one against Barca takes the cake

The gooners where lucky (Thank god) I think Some Chelsea players might be hanging around the Milan players lately, they have contracted the 'post hitteritis desease. They hit it something like 3 or 4 times??

But their goal was also somewhat lucky if you might call it that, Hleb was blatantly fouled by A.Cole at the start of that Chelsea move, but WHAT A GOAL from Essien ohmy.gif ohmy.gif .

Posted by: han2503 Dec 10 2006, 07:43 PM

Chelsea did merit the win in the end, but guess what? They played their best football when ES was taken off.

Mourinho should stop listening to Abramovic and stick to his tactics and game plan. Chelsea seem to be playingh like they are with 10 men when they play with Sheva. And also they don't play the diamond formation well. They should stick with the wingers. Robben was great when he came on

Of course if you put in (25 min till the end) two fresh attacking players + put attacking Essien as RD + the pressure of final minutes to win you will get a change. It could have work if it were the other way around.

Drogba was playing bad also. And SWP was sh1t.

Agreed but you can't deny that ES was 'sh!t' Also, accept for one timid shot on goal all he did was misplac passes.

Somthing that the 'Milan Sheva'# Never used to do.

It's useless trying to defend his performances when heplays that bad.

And we all know that he is still playing because of Abramovic. If the situation was different Jose wouyld have benched his @ss 2 months ago

If the situation was different Jose would have benched his @ss 2 months ago

I'm not denying it. He was bad but Drogba wasn't much better.

He is playing cuz Jose knows that sooner or later Sheva will adjust. You cannot adjust without playing

What's the reason comparing them?? This is the same to me as saying "He was bad but Gila hit the post" ... rolleyes.gif

Whether he will adjust or not time can only tell. Tonight he was bad, period!

Yeah Drogba was bad but not as much as Sheva, He was losing balls, and wasn't EVEN getting in good positions, let alone score.

Just saying that he is playing because they want him to adjust is BS imo. I was watching Chelsea TV today and they where talking about this with journalists, and the Chelsea TV reporter asked them why they are so hard on him. And this sports writer said this "He's had time to adjust he's a world class player and if it wasn't for his relationship with Abramovic Jose would have benched him a long time ago. Robben had a bad half hour against United and he is benched immediately, Sheva is having bad game after bad game and he still get's the starting berth." Then this journalist went on and said something about him being friends with Roman "I remember this episode when Chelsea and Milan had arranged a friendly and Abramovic and Sheva where in deep conversation, to the point where Carlo Ancellotti had t yell at him 'Andiamo Sheva, Andiamo' to return back to training" I think this is proof enough that it's not just me and some others who feel this way about Sheva getting the special treatment but eveb journalists who continue to call Mourinho out on this. And despite what Mourinho says we all know that if the situation was different and Sheva wasn't as close as he is to Abramovic he wouldn't have got as much chances as he's had. End of.

I'm sorry but I think it's BS.
It's easy to say that it's because their relationship. What would you expect from a journalist? It's a juicy story. There is numerous examples of a very good players, world class players that's took for them some time to adjust. And guess what they played cuz there wasn't quastion about their ability just like there isn't about his. Why Wenger hasn't benched Henry when he was bad at the begining? because he knew that he need some time to adjust and you cannot adjust from the bench rolleyes.gif or could you? Just because it's happens to be that Sheva has good relationship with Abromovic it's convenient to use that every time against him. If you think that somebody can say to Jose what to do then you are wrong.

roman isnb't interfering in jose's plans!
silvio IS intefering in carlo's plans!

that's the difference.
while roman a while back didn't have any clue of FB, silvio apparantely has.
and I know many who agree with me

because Henry was 22 when he joined the Gooners and unlike Sheva far from a world calss striker!! I think there is quite a difference between the two... rolleyes.gif

Adjusting time or not, if that was someone else, high class player or not Jose would have benched him. Do you doubt Robben's ability? Does he deserve to be shown the bench because of a bad 30 minutes against Man U? Especially when he was coming on as a sub!

Of course he does interfere. If Jose doens't do what he wants him to then I'm sure Abramovic wouldn't have any problem sacking him.

O.o what do you mean.
Roman snagged a whiz to Chelsea, and as long as everythings alright he won't interfere.
And the agreement....

THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand why the hell people keep comparing the 2 situations. Henry went to Arsenal as a failed MEDFIELDER from Juve. Sheva went to Chelsea as an established WORLD CLASS striker, with experiance, in probably the most defensive league there is. Two COMPLETELY different situations!!!

Roman might not interfere in anything else but he does interfere in the Sheva situation!!! You don't have to 'know people from the inside' or anything else to know this. If you know how to add 1 + 1 then you would figure the situation out easily.

I wouldn't imagine Jose jeopradising a result in an important match just so a player could 'adapt' no matter how much money and how good he is. Chelsea CLEARLY play better when he isn't playing, Jose is probably one of the best managers there is right now, if I myself and a couple of other millions of people see this, then I can't see why he wouldn't see it.

There IS pressure from Roman to play him, no matter what anyone from the Chelsea camp says.

NOPE!
Jose does everything regarding football.
a l a"I do the football, you do the business!"
and quote: "I know nothing about business, and Roman does know nothing about football"

Maybe Sheva's Roman's darling, but that doesn't mean that jose plays him just to please roman. As we know, roman knew nothing about FB, years back.
