Serie A 2006/2007 - Day 28

Inter v Milan

Sunday, 11th of March 2007

Time: 14:00 (UK), 15:00 (IT)

OK guys. The derby is back. The match after the Celtic and Valencia important matches in the CL for the Milano teams.

Maicon, Cambiasso, Vieira and Mancini are out (the last one won't be on the bench).
We're 3 points away from the CL spots so we must win this one.

Forza Milan!

Posted by: mishie Mar 4 2007, 09:22 PM

This is going to be a really tough game that's for sure.
Merda have 18 wins out of last 19 league games which speaks for it's self, but i think we are unbeaten in 14 league games so thats encouraging for us to.
Hopefully Valencia will knock-out merda and dent their confidence and we thrash Celtic to boost ours biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
My prediction is a 2-1 win for us

Posted by: han2503 Mar 4 2007, 09:28 PM

Man I'm really worried about this one.

Despite winning a lot of our games we still aren't playing that well at times.

I personally feel like our season will hinge on this game and the one against Roma, if we do manage to win these 2 games (which I think is highly unlikely and will be really tough) then I feel we can manage 2nd, but if we don't win either I will really start to fear our chances of making it to the 4th spot

Posted by: Locke Lamora Mar 4 2007, 09:46 PM

My heart says 0-2.
My head says 3-1.

Man u need some prozac ... Milan will win the derby. devilsmiley.gif

And why r u making it look like if we dont make it to 2nd we wont make it to 4th place. If we get anywhere close to 2nd place, believe me that is where Milan will finish !!

But in reality, I think a 4th place finish is the target for this season and the team has made it ... If we continue with this form, Milan might have a chance for 3rd polace too king.gif ... Considering what happened to this great club, I think they have done us proud.

Predict : merda 1 - 3 Milan

What I mean when I say if we don't win these 2 crucial games is we will fall off the pace, but if we manage to win these 2 games then we might even have a shot at 2nd place.

I never said that if we don't reach second we won't reach fourth. But I really feel that these 2 games will make or break the rest of our season.

Inter , wether we like it or not have been amazing this season and we sadly haven't, we haven't been playing well either despite finally picking up points instead of having no killer instinct infront of goal and come out with draw from the easiest of games.

I'm hoping for a draw for this one, if we win I'll celebrate it like we've won the league

There's no chance we'll get hammered they way we were in the first round. I think the game will be a draw. A 2-2 draw.

I think this could either turn out to be the best week of our season or the worst. If we manage to win both games I think it will define the rest of our season, if we don't manage to win either our screwed up season will have a nice cherry on top rolleyes.gif

I'm personally afraid of celtic not because I fear they will beat us or anything like that but that our players will be complaicent and over confident, that's what I really fear about that one.

Deportivo and Liverpool have thought us that we are our own worst enemies. They didn't learn their lesson the first time so let's see if they learnt it the second time, I think tomorrow will be really telling if they have overcome this issue

The problem will be dealing with Crespo and Ibrahimovic.
Ronlado, Kaka and Gilardinho are competent up in attack, but as we saw in the Siena match, sometimes our defence play like sh*t.
But with Viera gone, they'l lack some serious midfield punch.

All in all, draw would be a good result.

DERBY: DISCIPLINARY SITUATION

3/6/2007

No suspensions for the Milan but there are six players a booking away from a ban: Bonera, Jankulovski, Ricardo Oliveira, Pirlo, Simic and Storari. Borriello is suspended until March 12. Inter have Maicon suspended while Mancini can take his place on the bench. The Nerazzurri have two suspended: Figo and Materazzi.

Milan is set to grind to a halt this Sunday afternoon for the Derby della Madonnina. Always a passionate affair, it promises to be an especially mouth-watering clash with both sides on such devastating form.

Inter are re-writing calcio history this term and have all but sealed the Scudetto with a commanding 16-point lead from nearest challengers Roma. The Nerazzurri were back to winning ways last weekend against Livorno after a draw with Udinese ended a 17-game winning streak, but will have been devastated by their midweek Champions League exit.

All that Roberto Mancini’s side can do now is avoid a catastrophic collapse in the League and try to dissolve the memory of events in Valencia with a second win over their bitter rivals.

Milan also approach the derby on confident form. Despite an eight point Calciopoli penalty, the Diavoli are in sixth and just three points short of a Champions League place after 15 games without defeat.

After a shaky start to the season, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have steadily improved and seem to be growing with each week. Milan ran out 3-1 victors against Chievo last weekend despite one of Dida’s occasional howlers and with their strikers starting to fire will believe that they can silence their Milanese rivals and keep the pressure on Empoli and Lazio.

When the clubs last met in October it was one of the best derbies of all time. Inter led 3-0 and 4-1 but were made to sweat for a 4-3 win after a late Milan rally. Marco Materazzi scored Inter’s crucial fourth and was dismissed for over-celebration. The Beneamata will be encouraged by their youth side’s comfortable 4-2 win over Milan last weekend.

Inter receive a boost with the news that Mancio is allowed on the bench despite receiving a red card against Livorno. However, they must do without the suspended Douglas Maicon. Ex-Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira and Esteban Cambiasso are still injured. Adriano may miss out, as may Hernan Crespo who was suspended last weekend. Nicolas Burdisso is a doubt after receiving a fractured nose in the fracas following the Valencia match.

Ancelotti’s injury crisis has eased slightly. Alessandro Costacurta, Marcos Cafu, Kakha Kaladze, Alessandro Nesta and Serginho are all still injured but Paolo Maldini and Pippo Inzaghi are fit again. Ronaldo prepares to face his former Inter teammates for the first time since his move to their arch rivals.

Man on fire: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter) – Inter’s top scorer turned provider last weekend with a magic assist for Julio Cruz. Bristling with confidence, the giant Swede will be a terrifying proposition for the Rossoneri defence.

Last season: Inter 3-2 Milan

Form guide: Inter (W W W D W) Milan (W W W D W)

Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Cordoba, Materazzi, Samuel, Grosso; Zanetti, Dacourt, Maxwell, Stankovic; Cruz, Ibrahimovic

Milan (probable): Dida; Oddo, Simic, Bonera, Jankulovski; Gattuso, Pirlo, Brocchi, Kaka; Gilardino, Ronaldo

I couldn't really care how we beat them. I just want the 3 points. I hope matrix doesn't cause us anymore injuries. We gotta keep the pressure up with the other teams especially since empoli has an easy game same with lazio. Hopefully Fiorentina defeats palermo!

Posted by: nnloso Mar 8 2007, 04:28 PM

The last 10 games we played against Inter, we won 6, draw 1 and lost 3.
I hope for a win and give Inter their first defeat for the season, and hope it's not the last, and that they will continue to lose a couple more games against other teams.

And Inter is out of Europe. Awwww....And we won. Hope this gives our team the motivation to go for the "kill"

I predict Milan 3 , Inter 1 devil.gif

inter are a technically sound group of individuals , however, as a
club they are an embarrassment.CL flares, tifosi revolts, player fights etc
no class, no style , no heart. my contempt for them truly knows
no bounds.

Posted by: misha Mar 8 2007, 07:16 PM

I really hope we will play with this line up:

------------Dida

Oddo-Paolo-Bonera-Jankulovski

-----Gattuso-Pirlo-Seedorf

--------------Kaka

--------Gilardino - Ronaldo

They are missing Vieira and Cambiasso so it will be much easier for our midfield and there is no reason to play with one striker.
Seedorf usually plays good against merda and Ronaldo will be extra motivated and at this stage (while he isn't in top form yet) he shouldn't play alone upfront.

Inter are anything, but technical ... They depend on certain players ... They arent technical at all. Milan is technical, Juve is technical, but Inter no.

Inter are the merda ... they always find a new low to go to .. Like the brawl two days ago, that was a new low ... Then on Sunday, they are bound to do something stupid again

I think that Inter's exit out of the CL can have either a positive or negative effect on the game.

They might be really p!ssed off or they might be struggling for confidence after getting knocked out of the CL in the shameful way they did.

We on the other hand are on a high at the moment. Even if I still believe that we can play MUCH better then we have currently been playing I think we still have that confidence that we lacked in the early part of the season.

Inter took advantage in the last deby because we went onto the pitch with the wrong mindset, we where never confident out there and it could be seen in the first half. But in the second even what Matrix was still on we played much better.

I believe that if we go out there in the right frame of mind and with confidence then we can win it. But if there is any hesitancy in our players I think we could get hammered again.

^^

I doubt it ... Milan will win on Sunday .. Milan has to win, Inter on the other hand dont have to win; they are 16 points at the top. Of course they will be convinced that they are better than us and will play with determination, but Milan will get the right result ... Milan almost always got the right result king.gif

*

100% agree. Also I think Dacourt is out, obviously Burdisso (don't really know how much that matters) and Maicon is suspended.

Maybe put on Pippo at some point in the 2nd half for Gila, he needs to get into playing form again. Plus it'll be interesting to see how he plays with Ronie. Also wanna see Gourcoff & Ambro in the 2nd half (hopefully after we're in the lead) Kaka has played a lot & it wouldn't do him harm to rest for a bit. Max has been awesome lately and we need his height & strength to keep a lead I think. Plus he seems to always have a good game in the derby. I think with Gourcoff & Seedorf we'd have enough creativity in the middle to take off Pirlo.

Posted by: fresh_prince7 Mar 9 2007, 04:02 PM

I rekon that lineup of mishale's is the best starting 11 possible providing players like pirlo and seedorf are on song.

Lets hope carlo plays this lineup. I could handle if oli or gourcuff is in the lineup.. but like that will ever happen. rolleyes.gif

The good news is with palermo's lack of form in recent weeks.. we now have third or fourth to target which just makes life abit easier knowing that.

I'd love to grind the merda into the ground in this game with ronaldo scoring at least once.

There's also Rossoneri7... but recently he'd have a good feeling about anything... even Germans quit drinking beer...

I don't know what to expect. It's one of the most weird encounters with Inter I can recall...

Serie A Preview: Internazionale-AC Milan

The Derby della Madonnina, which is always a match to be cherished, occurs once again this Sunday.

When: Sunday March 11, 15:00 (CET)

Where: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan, Italy

BACKGROUND

Theoretically, there is a home team and an away team for this match. Inter will get the former title, while Milan will be the latter. In actuality, however, with both clubs playing in their home stadium they have shared for many years, there is no real distinction between who has the advantage in terms of crowd favoritism, as the stadium will be packed with thousands of people wearing both red and blue in addition to the black each team sports on their respective kits.

When these two first met back in late October, is was one of the most thrilling matches to ever take place between these two rivals, which is really saying something. Inter stormed out to a 3-0 lead with Zlatan Ibrahimovic finishing a full-field team move just after the restart.

Clarence Seedorf responded with a deflected strike three minutes later, and Milan finally had a bit of bite behind their bark. The ever-controversial Marco Materazzi restored the three-goal cushion in the 68th minute, with Milan’s defense seemingly nowhere to be found.

Alberto Gilardino got his first goal of the season with a well placed header in the 75th, and Milan were now pouring forward with constant pressure on the Inter goal. Kakà, as he has since continued to do, scored late to make it just a one-goal lead, but Inter were able to hang on for the win.

CURRENT FORM

Inter (W D W, 1st place in Serie A)

After setting a new European record for consecutive victories at seventeen, that streak was halted two weeks ago by Udinese. They started a new streak last weekend with a win over Livorno, but then crashed out of the Champions League (which was their main aim this season) against Valencia this week. The match was marred by violence at the end, with a full scale brawl breaking out between the two sides.

Milan (W D W, 6th place in Serie A)

The Rossoneri are just three points back of fourth place, which comes with a Champions League qualification spot for next season, and that is their main aim domestically.

On the current European front, they are still alive in the Champions League after Kakà scored a wonder-goal in extra-time against Celtic on Wednesday.

TEAM NEWS

Inter will have several players missing through injury. They are Patrick Vieira, Esteban Cambiasso and Nicolas Burdisso, whose nose was fractured during the fracas after the Valencia match. Also, Douglas Maicon is suspended.

Milan must do without Alessandro Costacurta, Alessandro Nesta, Kakhaber Kaladze, Marcos Cafu and Serginho.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter) – He has played incredibly well after the summer transfer from Juventus. Milan almost purchased him, and he will be eager to prove why they should have.

Ronaldo (Milan) – He will be wearing red and black rather than blue and black for the first ever in a Milan derby, after having achieved iconic status in his previous spell with Inter. The emotions will be evident, but don’t expect him to let that deter his ability to score goals.

POSSIBLE STARTING XI’s

Inter (4-4-2): Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Cordoba, Materazzi, Grosso; Stankovic, Dacourt, Maxwell, Figo; Cruz, Ibrahimovic

Milan (4-3-1-2): Dida; Oddo, Bonera, Maldini, Jankulovski; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kakà; Gilardino, Ronaldo

PREDICTION

This match will be one for the ages, as the Milan derby usually is. Both clubs are on fire in domestic play, and Milan cannot allow their eternal rivals to win both encounters this season. With the added enticement of Ronaldo playing, this will be a very entertaining affair.

Inter 1-2 Milan

Gattuso Reveals Ronaldo's Derby Dream

According to the Milan midfielder, the Brazilian is ready to face his former squad and very much looking forward to it.

Gennaro Gattuso spoke about Ronaldo's first Milan derby with the Rossoneri colours in what should be a very emotional match for the former Inter player.

"He has been dreaming about this match for a long time," explained Gattuso. "Ronnie is fine, he wants to do well. It's normal that he has an incredible will to prove that he is not a finished player like many have said."

Gattuso still rates the Nerazzurri very highly despite the elimination from the Champions League on Tuesday.

"Inter is one of the strongest teams in Europe right now, for the way the team is made up, for the type of game they play."

The derby game will be played on Sunday afternoon, despite many fans protesting against this decision of not offering the encounter in the evening.

I like this lineup, the Ka-Ro-Li forward line produced 3 goals against Siena. Inzaghi and Gilardino are options off the bench if Ancelotti needs to change things up. I would like to see him play two up front, although he got us through against Celtic and I trust his judgement.

This is a great chance for a win. Inter have a few key players out and will be suffering from their CL exit midweek. With Lazio playing Empoli next week, a draw would probably keep us in touch with fourth place, although I believe a win is there for the taking and is definitely not beyond us. I think we need a minimum of six points out of the next three matches (Inter, Atalanta, Roma) to maintain our push for a place in the top four.

FORZA MILAN!

Inter – AC Milan: Fan vs. Fan

Inter fan Martino Neri and Milan fan Nigel Dawson answer Goal.com’s questions about tomorrow’s big derby game between the Nerazzurri and Rossoneri.

GOAL: First of all, how do you feel about your side's season so far?

Martino (Inter): I hope we can finish the Serie A season undefeated and try, although it will be very hard, to reach 100 points. Let’s just try to keep up the good work and not deflate like a balloon in this last part of the season.

Nigel (Milan): Disappointing, but understandably so. The 8 point penalty was never going to prove too big for a club like us, but the events that allied with Calciopoli were what really weakened us. The players were tired after the World Cup, had a very short vacation, we had a summer of uncertainty - with the players and fans wondering where we would be playing our football next season - and that surely didn’t help in the transfer market, as we failed to replace Sheva adequately. Our defense too, needed quality reinforcement. So all said and done, I can only hope this leads to some quality signings for the club to sustain the success we have had in the recent past.

GOAL: What are your expectations from the season?

Martino (Inter): Very important. Along with the home game against Roma it will be, on paper, our most difficult match. Also a win in the derby, after we also won the first “leg” against our cousins, would be a good way to make up for the Champions League disappointment.

Nigel (Milan): In Serie A 4th place is the least we can settle for. I am under no illusion about our current strength - especially offensively - so I’ll be happy with a run till the semi-finals in the Champions League. We could do with the money!

GOAL: How important is this clash, in that perspective?

Martino (Inter): I hope we get either Cambiasso or Vieira back for this match, as their presence is very important in our midfield. I think the battle will be won or lost, as in most cases, the middle of the park.

Nigel (Milan): It is a very important match in which a victory can give us some much needed belief in ourselves. We’ve always been a positive team, but this season has been difficult, and more than anything, I want us to avenge the 3-4 defeat we suffered earlier in the season.

GOAL: Tactically, where do you think this match may be won or lost?

Martino (Inter): I hope we get either Cambiasso or Vieira back for this match, as their presence is very important in our midfield. I think the battle will be won or lost, as in most cases, the middle of the park.

Nigel (Milan): No Viera, no Cambiasso. Definitely the midfield. We saw how much Inter missed both of them in the Valencia match. Without them in the centre, Inter are always vulnerable. We, on the other hand, have all our key players fit. I think Pirlo, Rino, Seedorf , Ambro (if we play a five man midfield) and Kaka will OWN Inter’s midfield!

GOAL: Which opposition player do you consider to be the greatest threat to your team in his clash?

Martino (Inter): Probably Kaká, although obviously Ronaldo will be keen to score against us. But Kaká, despite being still young, is Milan’s leader and best player. He’s also scored very often against us and was also Milan’s best man when they lost 4-3 to us earlier this season.

Nigel (Milan): Ibrahimovic. I hate to admit it, but the guy’s a magician. We’ll have to be on our guard all the time against him. We should make sure we don’t allow him much time on the ball, as he can conjure up something in a snap.

GOAL: Would you want him in your team?

Martino (Inter): I think we could use that type of player, a playmaker. While Figo or Stankovic can play in that position for us, Kaká was really born to be a number 10, just like Totti for Roma.

Nigel (Milan): His attitude is questionable, but I still think he’s in the wrong shirt!

GOAL: Who from your team should we keep a particular eye on here?

Martino (Inter): Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been playing his best football ever, even though against Valencia he turned us down a little bit. “Ibracadabra”, as he’s become nicknamed among us fans, will be keen to make up for that disappointing game with a great performance in this one, and he was already one of the main factors in our earlier victory against Milan.

Nigel (Milan): Ronaldo. I wasn’t a great fan of his move in January, but he was sensasional in the match against Chievo. Nobody ever doubted his technical excellence, but rather his desire. He seems to have got it back, that hunger to score, and I think he’ll be looking to prove a point or two on Sunday. And what better stage to do it than the derby!

GOAL: What single thing irritates you most about them?

Martino (Inter): Their fans are among the most arrogant in Italy. The rivalry between our set of fans and theirs is very intense. They always have some insulting flag directed at us even when they are not playing a derby. Very annoying people.

Nigel (Milan): Just because ourselves and Juve have been having a lot of success for the better part of the last twenty years, they seem to think that they have a divine right to the Scudetto every new season. What they don’t seem to realise is that you’ve got to play better than ALL the teams, throughout a whole season, to win it. And they’re such whiners at the end of it all.

GOAL: And what do you grudgingly admire?

Martino (Inter): Their European record makes ours look ridiculous. Especially in recent seasons they’ve done really well in the Champions League. However, domestically we aren’t that far away from them because, after we win this scudetto, we will have just two less than them.

Nigel (Milan): The loyalty of the fans and the glamour of the club, both of which never seem to wane. Despite not winning anything important for so long, their fans have retained their hope and continue to back the team. And despite not accomplishing anything of note for so long, the club is still considered as one of the elite and has no problem attracting world class talent.

GOAL: Who is your all-time number one hate figure (or object of amusement) from their lot?

Martino (Inter): Cristian Brocchi is quite an irritating little man. After spending one season with us when we weren’t having a great time and he spent a lot of time on the bench, under Marcello Lippi, he has made nasty, mean comments about us ever since. This is a man who truly hates Inter. Also, when he was at loan at Fiorentina last season he said he would have liked to stay there and now he is back at Milan again. So he’s also inconsequential, even though I know those things happen in football.

Nigel (Milan): Marco Materazzi. He had a phenomenal 2006 but I’ll never rate him because he’s a dirty player. He may be passionate about Inter, but we also have Gattuso who’s probably ten times as much passionate about Milan,  but you don’t see him whispering obsenities into opposition players’ ears and making career-ending tackles.

GOAL: What was the best bit of business ever done between the two clubs?

Martino (Inter): From our point of view, it was selling them Christian Vieri in 2005 at a time when he was clearly past his best period of form. Indeed, he scored just twice there and spent just half a season with them. From their point of view, unfortunately we have sold them several players who ended up being successful, particularly Pirlo and Seedorf.

Nigel (Milan): Oh, there are so many of them! But I’d pick Pirlo’s transfer. I don’t know what Moratti was thinking when he was selling him to us. He’s now one of the world’s best, and for that we’re indebted to Inter!

GOAL: What's your fondest memory of past clashes against them?

Martino (Inter): The derby earlier this season was easily one of the most exciting of recent times. We played magnificently, scored three magnificent goals through Crespo, Stankovic, and Ibrahimovic, Seedorf then made it 3-1, but Materazzi added another from a dead ball to make it 4-1. Right after that he got sent off for a second yellow after taking off his shirt, and we had to hold on with 10 men. Milan managed to squeeze in two goals, through Gilardino and Kaká, but despite a last-minute header by Oliveira which finished just wide, we got the win. A great performance that really gave us wings as it was the second of 17 consecutive Serie A victories and it also gave us morale to come back from the dead to qualify from our Champions League group (unfortunately to no avail, in the end).

Nigel (Milan): That’s easy. ‘That’ match in 2001, the 6-0 win. It was really magical, seeing all the goals go in one after another. The result will be etched in Inter fans’ memory forever, as a reminder of our superiority over them.

GOAL: What do you think the score of this match will be, and how will it affect your week?

Martino (Inter): I think we can win it as Milan still haven’t looked convincing this season and struggled hugely to knock out Celtic in midweek. I think, and hope, our own players will be very motivated for this one after the Champions League exit. 2-1 for us, with Ibrahimovic and Stankovic scoring.

Nigel (Milan): We’re away in this match, so it’ll be a bit more difficult. But I am positive Inter will be demoralized after their Champions League exit, while we enter the match in a positive state of mind. With Ronaldo on our side, I am going for a 2-3 win for us.

Point wise, a defeat won’t be a disaster, as I am sure we can make that up. I’ll only be concerned if we don’t show enough hunger to win the match.

Inter fans to 'deafen' Ronaldo

Inter supporters have planned 30,000 whistles to heckle Ronaldo throughout the derby, but Gennaro Gattuso assures his teammate is ready for anything.

This will be the first time Il Fenomeno has faced his former club since joining Milan and the fans have prepared a welcome that is not so much warm as incandescent.

The ‘Boys’ Ultras club have prepared 30,000 whistles to hand out at San Siro so that fans can deafen Ronaldo with the noise every time he touches the ball.

Nonetheless, teammate Gattuso is certain that the unusual situation will not trouble Ronie too much.

“Ronaldo is in good shape, wants to do well and I think he’s been dreaming about this match for a very long time,” smiled the midfielder.

“It’s only normal he’ll have an incredible desire to prove he is not finished as a player, regardless of what some might say.”

Ringhio has never scored in the Milan derby and is none too confident of his chances on Sunday afternoon either.

“I get the feeling if I hit the back of the net against Inter there would be a lot of heart attacks on the pitch! It’s better to let that thought go, nobody expects Gattuso on the scoresheet in a derby, but in football you never know.”

Milan and Roma are through to the Champions League quarter-finals, but the all-conquering Inter have crashed out against Valencia.

“Nobody can change my mind on the fact that if Inter had the entire squad at their disposal, they would have beaten Valencia easily. I think this is one of the strongest teams in Europe at the moment for the way they are set up and the type of football they play.”

Adriano out of Milan derby

Adriano, Esteban Cambiasso and Patrick Vieira will not take part in tomorrow’s Derby della Madonnina.

“Adriano is out of action,” explained Coach Roberto Mancini. “He’s not in great shape and we prefer not to run any risks. We hope to have him back for next week.”

L’Imperatore has been struggling with a muscular problem for the past week and was expected to recover in time for either the midweek Champions League tie with Valencia or Sunday afternoon’s clash with Milan.

However, he has not been included in the 19-man squad announced by Mancini and will therefore be in the stands.

He is joined by Cambiasso, who has also failed to recover in time from a thigh strain, and Vieira continues treatment for a long-term knee injury.

It is therefore believed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will partner ex-Milan striker Hernan Crespo upfront.

Nicolas Burdisso is included despite fracturing his nose in the Mestalla brawl on Tuesday, while Alvaro Recoba returns to the side. Douglas Maicon is suspended.

“The swelling around Nicolas’ eye has gone down and the nose is also better. He’s a fighter, he won’t pull back,” added Mancio.

Inter squad: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar Soares; 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Maxwell, 11 Fabio Grosso, 16 Nicolas Burdisso, 23 Marco Materazzi, 25 Walter Samuel, 77 Marco Andreolli; 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Luis Figo, 15 Olivier Dacourt, 21 Santiago Solari, 91 Mariano Gonzalez; 8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 9 Julio Ricardo Cruz, 18 Hernan Crespo, 20 Alvaro Recoba.

Ancelotti trusts in Ron Basten

Carlo Ancelotti has compared Ronaldo to the legendary Marco Van Basten, assuring he’ll do what’s needed against Inter.

“Ronaldo has the quality to say to me what Van Basten did when he saw I was tense before a game. He told me not to worry, just give him the ball and then run to embrace him when he scores,” smiled the former Milan midfielder.

“We don’t need to know if he is at 50, 60 or 70 per cent fitness. We do know that when Ronaldo is called upon, he is very dangerous. All we have to do is give him the right kind of service.”

All eyes will be on Il Fenomeno on Sunday afternoon, as he faces his former squad for the first time. The Ultras have already prepared 30,000 whistles to heckle him every time he touches the ball.

“I couldn’t say what would happen if he scored, but he has the quality to net against any side. The Inter fans can manifest their feelings towards him any way they see fit, but that won’t affect Ronaldo. He has too much experience for that.”

Adriano is out of action for Inter, so the danger man will definitely be considered Zlatan Ibrahimovic, their current top scorer on 12 Serie A goals.

“If I could take one player off them, it’d be Ibrahimovic. In the past he was aesthetically wonderful, but not all that effective. Now he is the one making the difference for Inter in the League. He has developed finishing skills and at the moment he is their most decisive player.”

With Pippo Inzaghi and Alberto Gilardino off form and Inter’s notorious midfield strength, it is possible Ancelotti will stick with the 4-4-1-1 system seen against Celtic.

“Milan will play with two strikers,” insisted Ancelotti, although he has often referred to Kaka in the past as a forward.

Both sides had a fiery midweek Champions League experience, Inter crashing out amid violent clashes in Valencia and Milan taken to extra time to eliminate Celtic.

“This is a game that does not change with external factors. The derby is in and of itself, open to any result. The favourites don’t always win and I don’t believe there will be any extra tension from what happened this week.”

There will, however, be the desire for revenge after the incredible 4-3 defeat earlier this season.

“That result was a launch pad for Inter, who gained courage and confidence from the win. For us it was the start of a difficult moment that we have now left behind. I think our performance will be completely different, as we have moved on.

“The Nerazzurri will want to win this game because they are deservedly getting closer to the Scudetto. Our situation is more complicated, as we are challenging with many other sides for fourth place.”

Milan squad: Dida, Kalac, Storari; Bonera, Cafu, Favalli, Grimi, Jankulovski, Maldini, Oddo, Simic; Ambrosini, Brocchi, Gattuso, Gourcuff, Kaka'', Pirlo, Seedorf; Gilardino, Inzaghi, Ricardo Oliveira, Ronaldo.

Matrix ready for Ron battle Sunday

11 March, 2007

Marco Materazzi was Ronaldo’s teammate and remains a good friend, but warns that for 90 minutes they will be at loggerheads.

“I fear this match will be sold as ‘Inter v Ronie’, even if he is part of the past,” said the defender ahead of today’s Milan derby.

“Ronaldo came to help Inter win and gave us some wonderful memories. He made a difficult decision and I respect him for that.

"However, after the pre-match handshake, he’d best no longer consider me a friend! I believe the same goes for him, he’ll do everything he can to beat us.”

Il Fenomeno wore the Nerazzurri jersey for five years before his switch to Real Madrid, but few expected him to return to the other side of the San Siro.

“I expect he’ll be very motivated, because the sword of Damocles is hanging over his head. He must prove that he remains Ronaldo, but we in turn will try to show he’s not!

"Today, in my view, Milan’s real star is Kaka. He is one of the most decisive players in the world and Celtic saw it on Wednesday. He is a leader, a future Ballon d’Or winner.”

Materazzi is hardly famed for his technique, but insists he has a great deal in common with Kaka.

“I can see myself in him, because hard work does pay off. He has class and technique, the gifts from Mother Nature. I have desire and determination – with those I achieved remarkable things in my career.

“In that sense, in what we have achieved, I feel myself very much the same as Kaka. We exemplify how a player can do well with different strengths. It’s a good lesson to teach children.”

Others would suggest Materazzi’s counter-part in the Milan derby is battling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

“It’s true we both have that competitive edge. I swear Rino would give a leg rather than lose a match! Yet in Valencia, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and myself were the calmest people there.

“It was almost like a reverse reaction. When we saw that usually relaxed players like Ivan Cordoba and Julio Cruz went mad trying to defend their ‘brother’, as we consider all our teammates, then we thought to ourselves ‘This situation seriously needs to be taken down a few notches.’”

That Champions League exit hurt Inter badly and the derby after only a few days will give them the opportunity to patch up that wound.

“Of course we are disappointed, but these are two different competitions. We want to take three precious points away from Milan so that they won’t have to play the preliminary round this summer. That way we can all have a nice long holiday in the sun together,” grinned the ‘generous’ Materazzi.

“We knew the Rossoneri were one of the contenders to win the Champions League and, considering the squad, they’ll reach the Final. We will win the Scudetto that everyone says is ‘ugly’ because Roma are 16 points behind, but the same side beat the great Lyon.

“There’s one of two realities here. Either there is another Roma side in Serie A or we have done something good this season.”

Maybe he put in Ambro because of Inter's hieght advantage on set-pieces unsure.gif

I don't like this formation, Inter won't have so much power in midfield without Viera and Cambiasso so I don't see why he would put in 2 DMFs

It's a good line-up! I wouldn't trust any of the other 3 strikers, they're all incompetent to say the least this season!

Ambro is unbeatable in the air and he's fast. Along with Gattuso they will allow Pirlo to move more freely!

Kaka's touches have been simply sublime so far. He looks like he's going to get a goal today.. as for Inter, we may as well take Dida off Crespo's not having a good day at all laugh.gif

Yep, I can see this game being a draw, we've been lucky so far and I can't see that continueing a lot more in the next 45 mins sad.gif

Who's listening to the audio off the milan site.

Commentator went off when Il Fenomeno scored.

Hearts still beating hard.

Absorbed all that pressure to score out of the run of play.

Hopefully bonera straightens up in the 2nd half, cause he has been wonderful acquisition to the defense.

Forza RONALDO! devil.gif

F*ck You Merda! All you deserve, all you deserve!

That`s the reason I asked who is playing!!!

Paolo is great. But the other three individuals...my god!!

Janku is very bad today, that killer pass could have made Inter simle so easily. Thank god, Crespo missed. Oddo??? Oddddddddddoooooo...!!! What`s up with that man? I allways knew he is overrated and not that good at all, but man, he`s playing like sh@t. I mean, defensively he breaks easily. And has anyone seen his crosses? Man ooo man...if we need such crosses we should call up Å imić as (O)RB instead.

Bonera...well. Here`s to all who praised him...this display shows his capacity. This should be the last derby in wich he starts the match in the first team. For big matches, he should be bench material.

Also Ambro is a bit lame. His position isn`t clear to me, and his movement very limited. But, that`s allright if you know Ambro well,..we all know what to expect of him wink.gif devilsmiley.gif ...

Again or problem is that We're only relying on Rickys genius. He can't decide evry match on his own, especially with good striker upfront. Ronaldos goal was good, but today he played like he did in the WC....standing around...waiting for the ball and then shoot. As good as his goal was...that`s just not enough!

This is our faith this season I gues, I knew we where going to lose, we got lucky about a million times in the first half.

1st goal, Dida mistake, second a Janku mistake and we lose the match nice. Ibrahimobitch must really think that he is playing for us since we assisted him for his goal and the one he assisted Cruz with.

Just ridiculous.
