Nice thread starter kurt. But I fail to see where the improvement will come from at this point...

I think we should try a 4-2-3-1 formation here, as han suggested. However, the lack of a pure DM means we'll have to cope with Ambro, and that Nocerino will be left out. Here's my idea:

Abbiati
Abate - Mexes - Zapata - Antonini
Montolivo - Ambrosini
El Shaarawy - Boateng - Emanuelson
Pazzini

Obviously, if Nocerino could play as DM it'd be great, but I don't think he can pull that off.

I think there will not be enough time to get the team trained in a new formation. We tried that whole false 9 thing last week with Boateng and it was supposed to work but flopped miserably. No one's fault. You cannot train the whole pre-season with one team, and then in the space of 3 weeks have the rug pulled from beneath you.

For better or worse, we seem at the moment to only have players who suit the 4-3-1-2. I'm going for the three points this time, and therefore a back to basics approach.

Abate---Mexes---Bonera---Antonini
----Urby----Montolivo----Nocerino
-------------Boateng--------------
----Bojan----------Pazzini--------

Bench: Yepes, Zapata, De Sciglio, El Sharaawy, Flamini

I'm not sure if Bojan is comfortable on the right, though I know his left is his stronger foot. Urby is my only un-orthodox position, but I'm hoping Abate and Urby on the right together, will create a quick counter combo. While he can always switch with Boateng during gameplay

Pazzini needs to play for obvious reasons, and therefore Urby as well, since he is the only one in the team capable of crossing.

I'd stick with the 4-3-1-2 for the reasons Jack mentioned, but I'd play El Shaarawy as an attacking trequartista. It's clear that without Ibra now Boateng can't shine anymore and he needs to get back to play as box to box midfielder. So I'd go with this:

Abbaiti
De Sciglio - Mexes - Zapata - Antonini
Boateng - Montolivo - Nocerino
El Shaarawy
Bojan - Pazzini

De Sciglio for the crosses.

Mexes and Zapata should start in the defence. Bonera and Yepes are walking errors

I'd also start Mexes and Zapata. At times Yepes too. Bonera, even when good in pre-season, shows immediatly his liability again. Shame...

Naah, Bonera is just plain awful. There were a lot of guys we used to criticize here at MF on and on - Kaladze, Pancaro, Favalli, Zambrotta - to name a few. Well, all of them are better then Bonera.

Pretty much. Don't think I'll forget that Udinese 4-4 game, thanks Bonera. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Or maybe his match against United in the Leonardo era?

Poor Bonera, what has he ever done except always keeping his mouth shut and accepting bench role? he's stayed at Milan for days like this, so I'd say he's earned his place in XI. he will be back on bench the moment better players will be available.

What??

So after all these Favalli/Zambrotta/... bashing's this is what you come up with? Now really, I find it hard to find a veteran who's always behaved nicely (well, except Zee (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ) no matter if he was benched or played right up front. I also remember this argument didn't pop up until now. Why the sudden change in approach?
