Well Zed, football loosing its flavor does not mean I am not interested in what Milan is doing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Its a club a supported way back. I havnt watched half the Milan games this season, hence this forum gives me enough info on the team.

Variety is nice in life, you grow out of the enthusiastic fan, start enjoying what other sports has to offer. Keeps things fresh I guess (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

But maybe that's just me.

I can safely say that that's not just you. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I'd call this a very "safe" tournament. No major upsets (and no I don't consider Greece coming out of the first round an upset), all good teams in the quarters, filtered down to the last four now. It started safe, with all teams playing cautiously, and looks to be ending safe.

Unless Portugal can somehow win the tournament, only then would I call it radically different.

What about Holland? Surely you didn't expect them to end with 3 lost matches.

And what about Italy? I'd certainly see a possible Italian victory as quite a surprise.

I actually did. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) They are one of my favorite teams in Europe, and I knew from the onset that if they don't hit the ground running Holland are going to get left behind. You can't fault the Germans for efficiency. I yearn for the day, I hope it comes in my lifetime when a German team fails to get out of the group stage in the Euros or World Cup, they are that good usually.

And I knew Portugal would strangle the others and get to the next round, because they have a very, very solid defense. Plus having the best player in the world as captain doesn't hurt either. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) If you'd have asked me this earlier I'd have said it'll be either Portugal and Germany or Portugal and Holland going through.

You are right however, in saying that I didn't expect them to lose all 3 matches, the Dutch.

Italy, hmm? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) I quite like them as a team, not sure I like many individuals in the current team. In fact, I'd say the only player I really like in there is Buffon. There I said it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) He's an absolute gem in a box of shiny pebbles. But the thing is Italy has recently won the World Cup, while this is Portugal's best chance for some gold.

Any of the four teams can win it as of right now, as a neutral fan, I'd rather it be Portugal now. Then others.

+1 @ Fillipo

I bet no one expected Italy to reach the semis or Holland to not even make it out of their group or Russia to suddenly choke like that after all the promise they'd shown (beating Italy 3-0, Czech 4-1).

Euro 2008 had Turkey and one of the greatest come backs ever in Czech-Turkey, but apart from that I can't remember anything particularly interesting from that tournament. except an exceptional Spain team winning it, of course.

Anyway, if Portugal beat Spain tonight then it'll be a huge upset. I don't get to say this often but... GO RONALDO!

Not to speak for Ash, but he already has followed up what he enjoys and he's doing a damn good job of it. I know it wasn't aimed at me, but as someone who's losing touch in football a little, the reason I stay here is because I like the people. The football is secondary.

I didn't mean that in a bad way and it wasn't aimed at anyone, I was just wondering why should someone follow football games every week when they don't find any excitement in it. if football bored me, I'd give it a break. but it doesn't. as cr@p as Milan have been sometimes, I've always been looking forward to that "next game".

This is not saying that I think football can't get any better than this, obviously.

Fair enough.
But I assume you're watching/following Euro 2012 games, right? why would you if football had lost it's flavor for you?

I am looking at you in the eyes, man. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Like I said, I wasn't surprised seeing them out, but then again if you read my post above, I also said that I didn't expect them to go home with 0 points. As mentioned above, there was more chance of a Portugal Germany or Portugal Holland. The Portuguese have one of the best defenses in Europe.

Meaning the only solid chance I gave Holland was if they somehow beat/drew with Germany.

I wasn't surprised seeing them out either since they had lost two games but had a chance to make it until the very last minutes of their last game! but if someone told me they'd lost three games before the kickoff of their game with Denamrk, I'd tell them to stop being silly. @Guys: It's called old-age. And it's roughly around that time that you stop worshipping footballers and start seeing them as humans. And then life and the fact that you need to to get on with it, means sports gets relegated to what it is- entertainment. But we still can't forget the emotions that our team and our players gave us so we cling on to it I guess.

My remedy is to hang out with girls a lot in the 'friend-zone', by the time you're done you're so bored you will be grateful for football. Even if it is watching Catania against Cagliari. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

@Ash, I hear you mate ... You win, you loose, it doesn't really change much in your household. Football, has lost its flavor to me. Other sports such as UFC and Tennis to an extent have taken me on board instead.

Football will always be football, just that as you grow-up you start noticing that the players you loved and had grown-up admiring have either retired or start getting boos because they are too old. I don't know these players, and I don't feel the strength of tradition anymore.

So true. I just can't feel the same enthusiasm towards the new players as I once felt for the stars of the 90ies and early 2000s. I see that guys Busquets, Götze or Neymar are very good players. Maybe they'll be as good as the Likes of Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo etc one day, but it still won't be the same. But it didn't grow up with these guys, I'm already grown up. I can't admire players who are 6 or 7 years younger than me in a way like I did in the past. Even on our German team, and that's a great team I think, there's not a single player I really, really like. Müller is good, but that's all.

Holland were a bit of a surprise. But in that group anything could have happened. Italy wasn't that much of a surprise to me. I already expected them to do well and play a more attacking football than in the past.

I can remember very well how the German NT tried to ruin my graduation party in '04 with a 0-0 against Latvia. We didn't make it to the KO matches that year as well as in 2000 --> dark years of german football.

Ah, now that you said it, it's all coming back to me! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) Germany was defending champions in Euro 2000 and frankly that was one immense group (bar Romania, that is). Golden Age Portugal, plus a very good England. Having said that, I don't expect any Germany team going out in the group stages anytime soon.

Unless something drastic happens, that is. Their infrastructure, league and National Team is awe-inspiring more often than not. And it takes a very special something to stop the German footballing juggernaut. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) And that usually happens in the later most stages of a global tournament - 2002, 2006, 2008 and now let's see what happens tomorrow.

QUOTE (Milan Are Brilliant @ Jun 26 2012, 10:03 PM) *
To be honest I just think that's the way the sport is heading. Maybe I've just watched it for too long and broadened my horizons to other sports that I certainly on TV enjoy watching a lot more than football these days. I don't think it's all down to watching other sports though, I just think for some reason football isn't as entertaining as it was a number of years back, obviously I can't give proof to this, just a gut feeling/opinion. Though obviously you still get those special moments in the sport, like the Man City finale in the PL.

It's probably due to saturation, with other sports you get a bit of a break and really look forward to the new season, with football it really is a sport you can watch live pretty much everyday of the year.

I just think football is not improving in any way. Not quality-wise, not officiating-wise not anything. I think the reason we've turned to other sports is simply the entertainment factor and the fact that we feel they (i'm talking about US sports) are really trying to improve their product.

I don't know man. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) I really, really wouldn't have mind if Croatia, Ukraine went through. Now that I think about it I surely would have liked Turkey to have made the cup into the finals. I know, but still, they're not a bad team. But all said and done this is a very congested tournament and only the best make through it alive.

Ukraine maybe and only because of Sheva. But Italy vs Germany feels so historic I just don't care. This is what I'm waiting for when a WC or EURO comes around, not an upset.

It's different in the CL or the domestic cup competitions. I like upsets there because I don't want to see the same teams winning each year. But the WC and Euro each come every four years so I want to see the best teams go deep.

Well that's one way to put it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif) But that also means a country like Portugal, or even England for that matter will have little to no chances. The traditional powerhouses will win and keep on winning. I am sure you are aware of the difference in quality between say Italy, Germany, Spain, and the rest of the countries.

For what it's worth Greece winning was an upset, and as much as I like Portugal, it was a pleasant one for your country, I am sure. Or was it not? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Yes, strong teams are needed, but only as much as a darkhorse. Otherwise, it'll be the powerhosues duking it out in global tournaments always and that's not my idea of a fun time.

I consider Portugal and England among the big ones based on the quality of their players. What I want to see is the best players perform at the highest level. As much as I dislike Cristiano as a person I want to see what he can do on the field. I want to be awed by a performance that could kick Spain out. That's another reason why I would want Ukraine to go through their group, because Sheva is a great player not just because I like him.

Well of course I loved Greece winning it but I don't know how neutrals felt. These teams have nothing to offer to the viewer quality-wise. Greece did not play anti-football in '04 as we did in '08 but it still was not pretty. Why would I want to see that if it's not my country playing? And I know that it's not like the traditional powers play amazing football but they do have some players among them that can please the football fan.
