The midfield is what connects the defense and offense. That is what I was referring to.

On paper Milan seem to match inter in all areas of the park. But when the game is underway, its a whole different world. Maybe after 6 months this team will finally be at its stride. But as of now, I'm dreading Newcastle too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

We looked like a well drilled side against every other team we've played. The problem is Inter and the way they play

We do not have an answer for it

Milan's midfield, i.e. its engine room was completely changed. The only real test they were put against was Torino, Bologna and a crippled Roma.

inter however have been playing for several seasons. You can't expect the same cohesion.

Yes Milan plays sexy football, but inter plays a solid brand.

Sad but true.

The difference is inter are a well drilled team. Milan have been reshuffled.

This is what I feared, but hope Milan can pull something out of this.

Inter fans watching our matches thinking the same.

inter have a squad core that remained intact for several seasons. They have bolstered their ranks with both experience and flair.

Milan on the other hand have made a very courageous decision to shuffle the core and focus on attack. I know the team is more entertaining now, but in Serie A that counts for nothing if your defence is minced meat.

Again I'm dredding this fixture, not sure what to expect or not to expect at all. Good riddance! This feeling sucks

Watching inter vs. Fiorentina, and my oh my how good inter are.

The derby is almost here and Im dreading this match up.

Milan have reinforced well but inter have also added further to a very competitive team.

What I want from Krunic is to spread play more. He always does the short pass. Sometimes there are opportunities where he can open the play more but he never takes them. Otherwise, he's doing a great job atm

I think I want more from Krunic too, but what matters is what the coach wants.

You noticed how Calabria was playing central midfield and Thiaw right back with Krunic slot next to Tomori? Seems as though Krunic is playing a deep #6 role.for the team.

What I appreciate from his play is breaking the lines, recovering the balls, ensuring Milan hold possession and spreading the play.

It is still early to say if he has excelled this season. But credit is due that he is doing a splendid job (IMG:style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

Most underrated player at Milan Rade Krunic:

V Bologna: most passes completed among any midfielder & 95% pass acc

V Torino: most passes completed among any midfielder & 91% pass acc

V Roma: most passes completed among any midfielder & 96% pass acc

Credit should be given where credit is due (IMG:style_emoticons/default/king.gif)

I know Krunic does not get much love on here, and it's understandable how frustrating he can get.

But he has seriously proven to be one to break the lines in midfield. Someone who does not shy from going into challenges.

Apparently he has eyes eyes on the side of his head also, as his passing in tight spaces relieves a lot of pressure.

He is also good at breaking out from the back to initiate attacks.

Yes he is not top quality, but an excellent utility player. Selling him now is a worry, as who on the bench is able to give Milan the equilibrium Krunic gives?

Yes I doubt there is love for this player, but at least give credit where it is due.

I agree re Pioli. Can't see him lasting past November at this point

Disagree re Juve and Lazio though

They are the same, only weaker in Lazio's case without SMS who was their best player. The only thing I'd want off of them would be Sarri.

Juve are still the same and still have Allegri there. So it will be the same slog as last season

Napoli are still good minus Kim but Garcia is a huge question mark

Inter imo have downgraded a lot in terms of squad quality. From Lukaku and Dzeko to Thuram and Arnautovic. Skriniar gone, same with Brozovic. Their old squad is just a year older now. What makes me think of them as being the favorites right now is their midfield, which is the best in the league imo and Inzaghi. He knows how to get the best out of the squad he has.

I can understand what you are saying here, however I still see Milan struggling to cement a 3rd/4th place, with Napoli and inter ahead. Juve will have very little distraction being out of Europe and will benefit to reignite after two bad seasons (on and off the pitch).

I'd add Atalanta to Lazio as the teams who can surprise this season.

The issue with Milan is, the whole midfield was completely altered, while the defense remains the weakest link. Seems as though Pioli wants to bed on "the best defence is offence" type of thing. I honestly see Milan in a period of transition at the moment.

In the spirit of suggesting we might be wrong, a good showing from Loftus Cheek against, admittedly, minimalist opposition.

Didn't think he was a bad signing, just a bit of a sideways one, but if he can be more than that, great!

What's the general vibe on here about where Milan are right now?

Obviously the management did a lot of changes, the chemistry will not be there. It will take time to get this new midfield to click let alone the front line. inter, Napoli, June and Lazio have an edge in this regard.

I have a feeling Pioli will be fired by December and Milan won't have a successful campaign. Another year of rebuilding.

Hope I'm wrong.

In general, I was frustrated with the dismissal of Maldini. Then left in a state of shock when Tonali was sold.

Today I full understand that this new ownership is about business and not about leaving a legacy.

Milan in general has shrunk into a Dortmund from a Bayern. Yes the target will be a Scudetto, but not at all ?costs?.

The sooner that sinks in to the ?rationale? of how this management is perceived by the wider Milan fan base, the more sense their actions will make.

Suning?s inter are more like Berlusconi?s Milan (pre FFP). Money will be thrown at the squad to attain a Scudetto and more so a Champions League title. And just like Berlusconi, at any cost.

On to Milan?s new signings; nothing to be excited about.

Ok, let's say I'm new to Milan - what tangible and proven benefits did Maldini bring to the club in his position, aside looking handsome in his director's chair.

Its more the intangible aspect here.

Maldini leaving in this manner would have devastating consequences for the team; such that Leao, Theo, Tonali and Maignan are reported to be shocked by this. Had Cardinale relieved Maldini by mutual consent, then we wouldnt be here talking about this. Its how he was fired that will have ripple effects.

Now granted Maldini did not bring something tangible; aside from putting together a Scudetto winning team and one that reached far and beyond our expectations in Europe.

This Cardinale chap just nudged Milan into an ?unknown?.

I would not be surprised when the key players ask for a transfer. As this guy just unwinded all the good work put in to build this core, as if Maldini and Massara formed the glue that kept this core intact.

So Milan have been confirmed a CL birth, a season of ups and downs - but I for one am proud, for obvious reasons.

Pioli is going to be confirmed, there is no point in arguing over this matter as he has done more than we all expected of him since his appointment.

A marquee signing is what I look forward to, but I doubt there will be BIG money thrown around. Milan will remain on this path, Cardinale stated when he took over that he will not deviate from the strategy Elliot put in place. Yes that means to continue focusing on young players, but in the club?s defense who knows better than Maldini, Massara and Pioli what this team lacks.

In terms of who moves on, I think Zlatan would leave on his own as he has nothing more to give other than a hard fought Scudetto. Otherwise; Diaz, Origi, Florenzi, Dest, Ballo Toure, Vranxx, to name a few would most likely depart this summer.

I believe this summer would be an interesting one, as the appeal to play for ?this? Milan is different from previous seasons, where the project and aims of the club are clear for all to see that the club are back in business (disclaimer: not Milan of the old guard, but an new, fresh and exciting Milan who are punching above their weight from one season to the next).

Juve deducted points, while Milan have a game with Juve in a couple of days, this is THE most important fixture of the calendar at the moment. As if Milan wins, Milan can cement 4th place with a final game against Verona.

On the assessment side; the season was not great, but not bad either. This team has a core which works. A core that won the Scudetto and went touching distance to the CL trophy. I am inclined to state that from next season Milan need an assault on the Scudetto, while the CL needs to be kept on ice and taken on a game per game basis.

Its been a long journey lads, since Berlusconi sold the club, one which left a lot to be desired. But alas, finally us fans have something to look forward to.

Watching City - Madrid last night made me glade Milan didn?t produce a miracle to reach the final.

Guardiola and his team would have humiliated Milan; i.e. ?slapped us silly up and down the pitch?.

If a team as equipped as Madrid were shrugged off in such a manner, I would like to see how inter will hold on. It?s a good omen if you share this perspective.

@Danny, It?s a structural thing with Serie A. The worldwide audience is not as interested as in the EPL, the infrastructure, etc etc. long-term means long-term; being cross Milan didn?t make the final is Ludacris; what?s mad is Milan making the semi final in the first place.

Making top four or not is what shall define this season, I am totally on that side of the fence. However that doesn?t derail the club from a long-term project; as this project has been set for a while now.

Winning a Scudetto or reaching CL later stages are an anomaly at this stage. But these milestones prove the exception to the rule, in that this team is being built to win.

What should happen now is the new owner putting an effort to add quality and depth to this squad, not doing that is what will put this project - in jeopardy.

A young Milan wins the Scudetto and then reaches the semi final of CL. Anyone who is not satisfied with this (given the resources available) is not being realistic.

It does sting to be knocked out by inter of all teams, but to their defence, they are an experienced squad who have depth in the bench and know how to handle such games.

Forza Milan! On to the next one.

Atalanta?s win against Roma, puts Milan in 4th and tied on points with Roma.

Juventus fell to Napoli, so that keeps Milan at touching distance.

Noting Milan will face all of Lazio, Roma and Juventus before the season ends.

P.S. Han; I understand the frustration with the rotations in the Bologna and Emploi games, but getting to the Semi final is a huge thing in terms of income for the club, not just prize money but sponsorship etc. the frustration is that Milan might not qualify for next seasons edition, and that is not what we all want; let alone the club, coach and players. But given the priorities and what was at stake, it was a risk to be taken.

Going forward, I trust the coach will be 110% focused on securing a CL birth (regardless of what happens with Juve?s points). However further rotation will most likely happen when Milan play the semi finals. And when that time comes, it will be understandable as the income from reaching the final would be that great. It?s a catch 22, you?re damned if you do and you?re damned if you don?t.

I would not want to be in Pioli?s hot seat during May.

Amazing! Milan on a different level.

Did not watch the match, woke up to the score and watched the game on replay; knowing the results I noticed Milan?s movements and it was one of caution while sponging with counter attacks. Nonetheless, each game has its own conditions and Pioli came out on top.

With regards to the league, Juventus got back the 15 points and are sitting in 3rd place. Roma in 4th, Milan 5th and inter 6th. Roma will play Milan and inter in the coming weeks and it is in Milan?s hands to keep that 4th spot locked down. If Milan don?t succeed, I?m not sure what the outcome would be for Pioli or Leao.

That said, I?m still in disbelief as to how far this team has come, proud!

Osimhen Will be back for the return leg, he will sit the bench for their next league match.

Milan go to Bologna and a rotation is most likely, however 3 points is crucial. A tough week starts tomorrow.

Milan did very well to absorb Napoli?s anger and get a goal. It was always going to be tough after that 0-4 ruthless humiliation.

The second leg will be an uphill battle for both Milan and Napoli. I don?t see this fixture as over, however psychologically Napoli are feeling inferior. That said, they will probably have Osimhen back who will add complexity. Fixture is not over.

On Pioli, I have to hand it to this man; he took Milan from its shambles in 2019, to a CL participation and a Scudetto the following season. This season, Milan has one foot on a semi final showing. Baby steps or giant leaps? Even if Milan get knocked out in Napoli and miss out on CL football next season. Pioli has proven me wrong and he has earned respect and admiration for how he made a team out of this Milan.

Bravo!

Stunning display from Milan. That first half was perfect, defence, midfield and offense; the team worked like a precision Swiss watch.

The difference was in three: 1) starting the attack from a back four, 2) Leao and Brahim tracking back to shore up the midfield and 3) Tonali Bennacer and Krunic owned the middle of the park.

Bennacer man marked Lobotka, who is the man behind the creative engine for this Napoli. He shut him off completely.

The team had three players pressing for the ball when lost, kudos to Krunic and Tonali for such a high work rate.

This game aside, CL will he a different fixture completely. Napoli had a wonderful season and will be crowned champions in the next couple of weeks. But this game will not be on show when the CL tune is played, Milan will be up against a very angry Napoli side. Assuming the team is injury free, fresh and able to put in 120% again, otherwise Napoli will definitely have their say. It won't be easy at all.
