Viola? Nah... Bayern will be there.

Prandelli owns Hitzfeld's @$$.
Pazzini will walk all over Luca Toni.
Nothing personal...just *yawn* trying to instill some spirit into me.

Prandelli is a top-coach. Like him. I wish good luck to all the italian teams in UEFA Cup.

Not that I like them....in fact I really hate them, but Bayern has to win the cup and IMO they're huge favorites.

Hey! What's wrong with Sevilla!?
You're lucky they're in the CL this year. Me too.
I hope Viola/Empoli win it. But I think it'll be between Bayern and Spurs.

it's not too often that a big team like bayern plays UEFA cup. but i have my money on the viola or spurs but my heart is with fiorentina

I'll have to see the seeding to see what I think. I'd imagine they'll be a second seed, due to their success in Europe the last few years, to go with a good season domestically this year.
I wouldn't be disappointed too much if they were to drop into the UEFA Cup. We'll jus tmake it a hat-trick.

Everon drew at home with Metalist and Andy Johnson missed two penalties
Posted by: dst Sep 21 2007, 10:18 AM
All 5 Greek teams won last night... I'm scared, something's wrong... could it be aliens? I'm afraid Inter are even going to reach the semis of the CL this time... something's changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air...
Posted by: Tennie Sep 21 2007, 12:55 PM
I think the win of the night for the Italian teams has to go to Empoli, who beat Zurich with what was, essentially, a reserve team.
Posted by: kurtsimonw Sep 21 2007, 06:23 PM
I was waiting for somebody to make a joke. Darren Bent scored, against World class opposition, too.
As for Andy Johnson, what a loser!

I think the middle-class Serie A teams are almost as good as the EPL ones while the ones from Spain come first.
The fact that 3 out of the Italian 4 teams were eliminated from the UEFA Cup only proves that they think too much of themselves... they don't seem to care about the UEFA Cup which is of course a mistake!

Palermo did got out to a team I've never even heard of. No disrespect to that other team, but if you can't beat them over 2 legs, you really can't be that good.

No, Spurs went unbeaten until they lost to Sevilla.

Zaragoza were eliminated by Ares and Blackburn by Larissa... I know very well the level of Greek football and if I took these results seriously I'd say both of them should be demoted to Spain's and England's second division respectively!!

The Uefa Cup starts up tomorrow with a whole bunch of games. The big matchup is Villareal-Fiorentina. Villareal looks to be fielding a full-strength lineup; Fiorentina didn't call up Montolivo but he's the only major absence.
Bayern are missing a whole bunch of people for their game. Toni, Ribery, De Michelis, etc etc etc.
Posted by: kurtsimonw Oct 25 2007, 09:30 PM
Spurs 1-2 Getafe. Very poor defending.
Spurs have only ever lost 1 home game in Europe, shows just how bad this season's going for them.

Damn those Bayern...they always win in the end. Congrats to Bayerns Toni Kroos. He surely is the biggest U18 talent in the world IMO. Came on with Bayern beeing one goal down...then he assists Klose and scored with a direct free kick

Bayern 0-1 Bolton - '20
If they lost, it'd be embarassing, doesn't matter how highly they rate the UEFA Cup. They're losing to a team that'll probably be relegated.

Bayern look like they have a strong line-up. Bolton don't seem to care, they have their third choice keeper playing, amongst other reserves
Posted by: Tennie Nov 8 2007, 07:36 PM
It's a standard lineup; the only difference I can see with Bayern is that Podolski is starting in place of Toni (who is on the sub's bench).
Posted by: Rossoneri7 Nov 8 2007, 07:38 PM
So Bayern are playing their best XI ?! Or something close to that ? Cuz if they were then Kurt's comments about Bayern embarrassing themselves should be the case. But if Bayern are playing their 2nd XI, then it really doesn't mean anything if they won or lost; except how the English press interpret it

It's not just the Munich line-up. Check the Bolton team, how many of those players have you even heard of?
HT 1-1. It's only a matter of time until Bayern win it, it's one way traffic.

2-1. Podolski's 2nd. It was ALL Ribery, though. Superb run and pass.
EDIT: I dunno why it quoted some post, especially since it wasn't even from this thread.
That Kroos kid's on for Ribery, first chance I've had to see him.

Whatever happened to Schweinsteiger (Spelling?). Around Euro2000 he was being hailed as the next big thing in Germany, he just doesn't seem to have developed into the top player I was expecting, he was very poor today, too.
I think bayerns biggest mistake today was they seemed to have thought they'd won the game (When they bought of Podolski and Ribery) verybig mistake, especially at 2-1.

Spot on. About Schweini (your spelling was correct btw.
). On hand he's only 22 or 23 (first appeared at the Euro 2004) but then he hasn't developed since the World Cup. IMO he's a bit like Gerrard (only that Schweini prefers to play on the flanks)...good shooter, very strong etc. ... but then he's far away from Stevies class.

Youngsters nowadays seems to be around forever (That's why I thought it was Euro2000 when he first broke into the International scene!). I didn't realise he was still that young, so he still has time to develop and reach a really high level.

The Spurs-Aalborg has been entertaining.
Aalborg took a shock lead early on, then doubled it before the break. HT 0-2. Within 40 seconds of the restart Berbatov pulled one back, 5 minutes later Malbranque qualised. Huddlestone involved in both goals.
EDIT: Spurs have turned it around, 3-2. Darren bent.
FT AEK 1-1 Fiorentina, was a result from earlier.

Going to watch the match as well. It'll be interesting how Olic will do.
VdV vs. Modric....I think Rafael is a atm better than Modric though the Croatian is a talented player as well. He was very good in Dynamos CL-Qualifier against Bremen (Diego was better though

Well...Dynamo didn't have to many chances--->Huub Stevens work. He once made a very popular comment which describes his style very good, can't really translate it but it's something like "The most important thin is the others don't score against us".
Dynamo wasn't very good in penetratting Hamburgs defensive...they had almost chance to score. Hamburg used their chances.
Modric...he was much more present on the field than the Durch, but VdV was more effective.

It's a good day to be a German team in the UEFA Cup today.
Hamburg drew 0-0 to Zurich and go through based on the 3-1 result of the first leg.
Leverkusen thumped Galatasaray 5-1.
Bayern beat Aberdeen 5-1.
Bremen are away to Braga, but I imagine Bremen will take that one.
Nuremberg play Benfica at Luz a bit later on. But for this one, I'm hoping the scoreline's the other way around. (Forza Benfica!)

Bayern beat Aberdeen 5-1.
Bremen are away to Braga, but I imagine Bremen will take that one.
Nuremberg play Benfica at Luz a bit later on. But for this one, I'm hoping the scoreline's the other way around. (Forza Benfica!)
UEFA Cup this year belongs to Bayern. If they perform 70% of what they can they'll win easily.
Podolski double and Lucio scored great FK, what a screamer it was [ http://www.d1g.com/video/show/?id=1806500 ]. Van Bommel and Van Buyten scored the others.
Benfica plays in Germany. And Charesteas just scored. So it's 1-1 agg.
*EDIT*
2-0 to Nurnberg. What a joke this Benfica is. A shame for the history of the club.

Basel is a joke. Sporting is not in a good moment (even Benfica is ahead of them in the table) and still hit 4 or 5. Liedson is OK, but he's not having a good season in the Portuguese League, although he scored some in the European Cups.

A fairly decent European week for the Egnlish teams. Liverpool, United and Chelsea are all in a fairly strong position to go through. While Spurs, Everton and more surprisingly Bolton are through, after knocking out Atletico.

They were really lucky on this one. Would have been a shame for a team like Benfica to be thrown out by a team that hasn't won a Bundesliga match in weeks though.
All the other german teams deserved to proceed to the next round. Bayern showed some of their class against Aberdeen, and it's good to see that Poldi can still play some football. The biggest surprise for me is Leverkusens 5-1 win over Galatasaray. Even without Rene Adler.

Benfica, Fiorentina, Sporting, Bremen (of course) would be nice. Bayern out would be just great though it won't happen I'm afraid. Going to see (on TV ) Hamburg vs Bayer today. I say the Pillendreher should be out with Hamburg advancing. I'd like to see their coach huub Stevens winning a title at the end of his Bundesliga career. He's a great tactician (master of defensive football and not inferior to any italian in that department) and a great man too. The Bundesliga owes him much.

Blog: The Odd Couple
Fiorentina and Everton clash in the UEFA Cup this evening. James Horncastle reveals some interesting parallels between the pair
Everton and Fiorentina are an odd couple. When the UEFA Cup quarter-final draw brought them together in December I struggled to see anything in the pair that complemented the other. But when the teams line-up at the Artemio Franchi tonight it will be possible to detect more parallels than opposites.
At primary school I was taught that blending blue and red paint makes the colour purple. While Merseysiders are encouraged not to mix the two colours, patches of Viola can still be found around Goodison Park.
Per Kroldrup spent six unhappy months with the Toffees in 2005, making only one League appearance. All he got for his troubles was a single honour – he was voted the worst signing in Premiership history by The Times. Everton boss David Moyes was said to have mixed-up the Dane with another scouted centre-half and subsequently bought Kroldrup, who he, allegedly, didn’t want.
Since Cesare Prandelli brought the former Udinese defender back to Italy he has hardly been neglected, playing over 35 games for the Gigliati and will almost certainly start, for better or worse depending on your opinion, against the Blues this evening.
Another Everton misfit, Andy Van Der Meyde, if selected, will face teammates from his Inter days, Christian Vieri and Alessandro Potenza.
And the quirky connections between the clubs don’t end there. Both Fiorentina and Everton are regarded in Italy and England as either the smallest of the big teams or biggest of the small teams. Cesare Prandelli and David Moyes, whose European debut as a player for Celtic in 1981-82 was against a Juventus XI including Prandelli, look set to challenge for a Champions League spot this term.
While the Toffees have never netted against Italian opposition in the UEFA Cup, hitman Yakubu, who rifled in his 16th of the campaign against Manchester City on February 25, has surpassed the previous club record for goals scored in a single season established by Andrei Kanchelskis in 1995-96. The Russian was sold the following year to the Viola.
The Florence outfit will be without their top scorer, Adrian Mutu, who injured his knee on the same day Yakubu broke ‘Kan-Kan’s’ achievement. The Romanian would have been useful to the Gigliati having already scored against Moyes’ Blues while playing for Chelsea in 2003-04.
Talk about colour clash!
So, who will win? The two sides have impeccable records in Europe this season and effectively cancel each other out. Everton have won eight consecutive matches in the competition while Fiorentina are unbeaten.
If I had to nail my flag to the mast, it would be the Viola’s, just. I, and Fiorentina, would be hammering it into the flagpole if the competition’s leading goalscorer Luca Toni was still at the club.

They were very bad just like Everton were in the first leg. I think it was fair that it was decided by the penalty shootout procedure...
Also, through to the next round are Zenit (vs Marseille, 1-3 / 2-0), Bayern (vs Anderlecht, 5-0 / 1-2 - Bravo to the Belgians they played to win and they did snatch the victory in Germany!), Getafe (vs Benfica, 2-1, 1-0), Leverkusen and PSV.

Grimi is starting for Sporting today! Forza Grimi.
Posted by: Tennie Mar 13 2008, 10:55 PM
Well. I'm a little surprised.
The Huns go through over Bremen, 2-1 aggregate. Diego pulled one goal back today, but Rangers' 2 in the first game are enough to take them to the next round. The Hun keeper (McGregor) had an absolutely amazing game.
And Sporting go through over Bolton. 1-0 today, 2-1 on aggregate. Doesn't sound like it was the best game - Bolton sent what was essentially a reserve team and Sporting was missing a couple of regular starters and even THEN, it took Sporting until the 85th to score. Grimi played the full 90, not sure how good he was.
Posted by: kurtsimonw Mar 14 2008, 01:08 AM
I watched the 1st half of the Bolton game in a Sports Bar and it was terrible, shame they went out, though. Looks like I'll have to just watch the CL for the English team. Kinda hoping for a Gers vs Viola UEFA Cup final.
I would say from what I saw that Grimi was 'solid', he never made any out of this world tackles, but he didn't make any mistakes either. Had a decent 1st half from what I saw.

Bayern Munich 1 - 1 Getafe
Fiorentina 1 - 1 PSV Eindhoven
Rangers 0 - 0 Sporting Lisbon

Another start for Grimi, it's good to see him get some european experience. I want him back next year, he's def an upgrade over Favalli and would be a good backup LB
Posted by: Fillipo Simone Apr 4 2008, 12:22 AM
Just to be sure, Bayern were superior for most of the time, and this bad ref disallowed one perfect clear Toni goal and called a wrong offside decision.
Hmh,..Getafe really isn't something worth watching in the final. Just a mediocre team that tends to complicate too much. But well, ex-Milanese Cosmin Contra scored!! Remember him? He did score for us against Inter, right?
Anyway. I'm looking forward to a Bayern-Fiorentina final clash..

FT Zenit 0-1 Leverkusen (Agg 4-2)
Posted by: Tennie Apr 10 2008, 07:25 PM
This must be 'miss a penalty' week. Zenit had one late in the game and Adler saved it.
It'll be interesting to see how PSV-Fiorentina plays out. Game's in Eindhoven, but PSV are missing both Afellay and Farfan.
The Lions of Sporting host the Huns at the Alvalade too -- and Grimi is set to start.
Don't even want to guess a result on Getafe-Bayern.

I shall be watching Sporting-Rangers. Mainly for former Villan Steven Davis, but I'm becoming 'British' for the night, also going against my Celtic loyalties!

Posted by: kurtsimonw Apr 10 2008, 07:59 PM
Well, in theory I SHOULD like Rangers instead of Celtic anyways because of what they stand for off the field. Plus I like the football they play, they're a very under-rated side - just because they play in an awful league.

You gotta feel for Getafe. They are just a small team (30 mil budget compared with 200 of Bayern) . They had some injured players before the game, another player was injured during the game, and played with 10 players from early on. And still they found strength to fight for 120 and gave fantastic effort and match ()and of course were the better side).
Something similar happened in the 1982 WC (1/4 or 1/2 final). France was leading 3:1 over Germany in OT bad Germans equalized and won on penalties. Football is played 120 min and Germany wins in the end

That's exactly what I was thinking when the second half of the extra time started. Kalle Rummenigge killed the French back then.
This game...maybe it was the payback the football god granted Bayern for the 1999 CL final. It was an amazing game...I can only recall that....f@cking amazing.
Normally I have strong sense of dislike when it comes to Bayern but to see Oliver "Titan" Kahn end his international career in an UEFA cup quaerterfinal against Getafe in front of 15000 viewers would have made me sad tbh.

Watching a replay of PSV-Fiorentina now. Fiorentina are playing really well. I do like the Viola - always have - and enjoy watching them play. Hope they do very well indeed in the UEFA Cup.
(Also, the more they run in UEFA Cup games, the more tired legs will be for the league games that follow.)

(Also, the more they run in UEFA Cup games, the more tired legs will be for the league games that follow.)it could easily have the opposite effect. rally the team together and strengthen the "unit". we all know what effect winning has on a squad.
it's not like being in the CL has had any positive effect on milan which is supposedly pinned back on tiredness.

Yes, I do. If you can't speak enough English to even attempt an interview in English by now, then he shouldn't be doing the job to be honest.
But the football we're playing is the worst it's been since.. well, certainly as long as I remember wathching us. Not only are the results as bad as McLarens and worse than Svens, the football is much worse and boring and he's picking the wrong players for certain jobs in my opinion.
Anyways, this isn't the thread to talk about England.
So it's Zenit-Bayern and Fiorentina-Rangers SFs right? Bayern should make the final, but I really don't know a whole lot about Zenit. The other tie should be very interesting. Both clubs still have their focus on other areas (Fiorentina fighting for CL & Rangers fighting for title/FA Cup) but I'm sure they will treat this competition as though it's very important to them. To close to predict in my opinion, will be settled by 1 goal/away goals/penalties.
Posted by: Fillipo Simone Apr 13 2008, 12:40 PM
^^^ Don't be that sure. Both sides (Fiorentina and Rangers) have a tendency of breaking down in important matches. I'm not sure it I'll be so tight. I'm more convinced one of the teams will break and conceed 2-3 maybe more goals..
Bayern - they just have to make it. What a way for Hitzfeld to end his Bayern career - League title, UEFA cup final (maybe) and German cup final (vs. Dortmund)..

Quick update on Rangers-Fiorentina.
Ujfalusi has recovered more quickly than usual and may play - it'll be a game-day decision.
The Rangers fan association has set up a fanzone adjacent to the stadium, where there'll be 7-a-side games for Rangers and Fiorentina support, music, dancing, food (haggis? deep fried mars bars?) and whatnot. I thought it was a nice touch for the Huns to put on a party.
Posted by: Jack Sparrow Apr 24 2008, 03:38 PM
^^ Deep fried mars bars? Yummy...
Posted by: Tennie Apr 24 2008, 06:57 PM
Hm. Well, Ujfalusi is in the official lineups on uefa.com, so maybe he really did recover. The Rangers side looks - to me - to be fairly depleted of its regulars. Hope this one and Bayern-Zenit are both good games. Will watch both when I get home (and so help me if it's Max Bretos doing commentary, I shall unpack my Sex Pistols cd and blast that for 90 minutes).
Posted by: Tennie Apr 24 2008, 09:10 PM
This must be 'Defender Own Goal Week'. First there was Riise for the Scousers. Now Lucio's done it for Bayern. (As of the 60th minute or so, Rangers-Fiorentina is scoreless and Bayern-Zenit is 1-1, with the goal in the right net coming from Ribery).
Posted by: morgoth Apr 24 2008, 10:40 PM
Bayern drew at home again, they probably get the result they need in Russia, I hope they don't though!
Forentina got the worst of good results, they'll have to win t go through, as would say Platini : "If can beat the Rangers, they have nothing to do in the final"
Posted by: Tennie May 1 2008, 05:36 PM
Well. Bayern are actually going to have to play for this one. The Zenit-Bayern game is earlier than normal due to St. Petersburg being a couple of timezones away. In the 4th min, Zenit's Pogrebnyak scored and Zenit now lead 2-1 on aggregate.

Pogrebnyak (Spelling?) has just picked up a yellow for Zenit, he will miss the final. Ouch.
Posted by: kurtsimonw May 1 2008, 07:21 PM
FT Zenit 4-0 Bayern.
The only negative for Zenit is that top scorer, who also scored 2 tonight, Pogrebnyak will miss the final for a yellow card. (Harsh yellow in my opinion, they should appeal).
Posted by: Tennie May 1 2008, 07:37 PM
^^ But Zenit do get Andrei Arshavin back from suspension -- and he's very, very good.
From reports in the Italian media, the Rangers fans have been enjoying themselves in Florence in the historic part of town and in the designated fanzone. There are no reports of any problems.
Let's hope for a good second semi.

Every team away in Europe plays like this in my opinion. Even the best teams (Milan @ Arsenal, United @ Barca, etc) play "defensively". But if you can't break them down, that's your own problem.
Fiorentina have had the best of it so far, most of the game's been in the Rangers half. HT 0-0.

True most teams defend away from home (EPL teams love a form of disguised catanaccio in europe) , but when you are the home team at Ibrox, playing 9-0-1 is unacceptable

Should Rangers win this, it will encourage depressing boring defensive football
Oh no, but the British don't play boring football, how can you insinuate such a thing!!!!!!
This showing is an act of courage on their part not defensive football just like Man U's showing against Barca.

True, the papers tomorrow will be praising this result, but if it was an Italian team it would be negative boring etc

SUPER RANGERS!
Posted by: whoarethepatriots May 1 2008, 10:25 PM
Fiorentina players looking utterly dejected, i feel for them
Commentators are going mad praising Rangers for "brilliant" display. I beg to differ
Posted by: whoarethepatriots May 1 2008, 10:28 PM
I am still p!ssed
Rangers are a shite team, no idea how they managed to get through.
Dream final between Viola and Bayern gone
Ironic how most experienced player (Vieri) completely shanked it over. Its painful watching how much he has declined over the years...
