QUOTE
European champions Milan may be forced to start the 2007-08 Serie A campaign without star striker Ronaldo.

The Brazilian is still struggling with a leg injury which has hampered his training over the last few weeks and he’s rated as very doubtful for Sunday’s first game of the season at Genoa.

Reports in the peninsula this evening are suggesting that the January signing from Real Madrid may not in fact make his seasonal debut until the Week 3 game against Siena on September 16.

As a result, he will not only miss the Marassi clash at the weekend but also the European Super Cup Final against Sevilla and the dangerous Fiorentina encounter in Week 2.

The loss of Ronaldo will pose a major problem for boss Carlo Ancelotti who will only have Pippo Inzaghi, Alberto Gilardino and Kaka available to him offensively.

As a result the Rossoneri, who can’t field new boy Alexandre Pato until January, may change their shape in the opening few weeks of the campaign.

Although President Silvio Berlusconi clearly favours a 4-3-1-2 formation, Ancelotti will undoubtedly consider using a 4-3-2-1 system until Ronaldo is again at his full disposal.

Ronaldo, who netted seven goals in 14 League games last season, will have happy memories of Siena should he be fit for that clash.

It was at the Franchi where he scored his first goals for the San Siro giants after they ended his Real Madrid nightmare.

Meanwhile, Paolo Maldini has confidently predicted that he will be ready for action at the end of next month.

The captain has spent all of the summer recovering from a knee injury, but insists he’s on the road to recovery ahead of what will be his final season as a professional.

“I’m doing fine and my knee is okay,” he noted. “I should start running again at the end of August before I will have another medical consultation.

“If that goes well and there aren’t any problems then I will resume training with my teammates and I’ll be ready for the end of September.”

Bad news, but not a crisis. We won the CL by playing 1 up-front (and put in some very good performances like this). This will be more of a concern when we come up against the smaller teams in my opinion, as Ron had the ability to create things himself when they put 10 men behind the ball.

A crisis for me would involve both Kaka and Seedorf injured.

Well, let's hope Emerson does arrive, because without signing a midfielder, we are too thin to play 5 in midfield.

This is sad... I fear Ronaldo will be injured for longer... he just can't have a full season with no injuries, not anymore!

But we got Willy, right Fester!?? (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ... (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Yoann has to play in the 4-5-1 against the smaller sides... we'll never win those teams with our usual speed! Go Yoann!! He could become a hero thanks to our board's chimerical function... but of course Galliani will say it was all planned in the end! that's a blow, but I'm not concerned that much. we still have Willy, Inzaghi, Gilardino and Kaka up front! (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

WOW ... Didn't expect this to happen, so early in the season.

Still, I think Milan are good to go without Ronaldo ... I hope when he comes back, he'll be 110% (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devil.gif)

In my assessment Ronaldo is a great choice to have because if he is healthy then he will score goals. Having him is better than not having him. And he did come through for us to get in the top four with his goals last season.

But in the past three seasons he has had injury after injury. So you can't really count on him this season. He hasn't even played so far and he's already injured. We can't possibly expect him to be like the kid in Barcelona. Its a shame that he's lost that fierce aggressive attacking flare with all these injuries he's sustained in his knees but thats the only way defenders can take him on is by taking him out.

Its really a common Milan problem with injury but lets hope for the best. Its a shame they didn't get some forwards for this team. I guess there weren't many options to obtain. Except another midfielder, who I like, but a DEFENSIVE midfielder is something that we don't really need right now.

@bryant ... I think MilanLab are doing a splendid job at getting our players back to their best. I mean look at Cafu, when he came EVERYONE thought he was washed up (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I believe Ronaldo will get back to his best .. Not only that, but he will form one of the strongest attack force along with Kaka', Pippo, and Seedorf (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/devilsmiley.gif)
