I think we'd qualify with a win here so I'm hoping Montella avoids messing around some more as he's done in the EL fixtures and just plays our best 11 so we can get this out of the way

Which is what though? :-D

Keeping in mind no Suso, no Romagnoli , no Calabria and no Abate for this one.

--------Mussachio---Bonucci----R-Rod--------------------
--------------------Biglia--------------------------------
----------Kessie------Montolivo-------Jack----------------
------------------------Hakan-------------------------------
------------Cutrone-------------Silva-----------------------

Subs: Borini, Kalinic, Zapata

No width at all, except for Jack and Hakan down the left. I'd rather not have Kessie or Kalinic starting, but not a lot of sub options right now.

I expect us to play a flat 3-5-2 though. Rodriguez and Borini on the wings. Kessie, Biglia and Hakan in the centre. All creative responsibility on Hakan and we have a boring game. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Well you were right about the flat 3-5-2 Jack, which so far has't worked for us

Zapata--Bonucci--Musacchio
Borini--Kessie--Biglia--Hakan--Rodriguez
Silva--Cutrone

It is never ever a 3-5-2 though.

It turns into a 4-1-4-1 in play which is the main mistake for why we're impotent in the offence. The 3-5-2 should be a 3-4-3 or a 4-2-4 in attack and a 5-3-2 in defence. Otherwise we look clueless passing sideways ad infinitum. It might have worked in the early 2000s, but not now!

I really find the formation talk boring tbh, I don't think how we shape up is the problem. When you can't even get the basic concept of pass and move right then it's pointless to talk about anything else. We're just clueless in general. There aren't any smart plays happening because there's no smart movement going on around the man with the ball, so that's why we end up passing sideways 99% of the time

No, I was simplifying. But this forum is too limited to bring out what I'm trying to say. But yeah, we have the same idea.

SO if you're forced to be in a 4-1-4-1, then it's too flat for any passing triangles to form that lets you advance the ball or break down opposition. It is good for pressing though and retaining possession since you're covering the areas of the pitch rather well.

A 3-4-3 or a 4-2-4 gives that lopsided shape giving you attacking options to pass to, but leaves you kind of exposed defensively. It's about coaching and hard drilling and knowing when the players have to move on to what.

This is something Conte does very well, which is why he could win even with a supposed defensive formation like the 3-5-2.

Yes, agreed there. Sorry about jumping on you with regards to the formations, it's just that we've discussed that topic to it's death here and it's obvious that there are deeper problems to be worked on then simply what shape we go out there in.

As you said, it's all about the coaching and Montella is just not cutting it

Milan needs more of this, mistakes can happen. But the important thing is to start clicking as one unit. The coach, I wouldn't say no to either Carlo or Conti, let's just leave it at that.
