Serie A 2006/2007 - Day 38
Reggina vs Milan
Sunday, May 27, 2007
Time: 14:00 (UK), 15:00 (IT)
Last game of the season
Another chance to give playing time to some young players since this game won't decide much for us but important to Reggina. Should be many Milan fans in the stands to honor their heroes.

Channel4 preview:
It’s do or die for Reggina whose Serie A status hangs in the balance as Milan visit the Stadio Granillo with their thoughts still on Athens.
Reggina may have fought back from an 11-point Calciopoli penalty but it could all still be in vain. Although the Amaranto would be close to a UEFA Cup spot were it not for their handicap, they still have it all to do to avoid the drop.
The Calabrians’ fighting spirit was perfectly demonstrated in last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Empoli where they trailed 3-0 at the break. While it saw Walter Mazzarri’s men extend their unbeaten run to eight games, they now need to upset Milan if they are to avoid putting their fate in others’ hands. Although a Siena defeat would guarantee survival, Mazzarri will be desperate to grab a famous victory in what looks likely to be his swansong.
Reggina will certainly be helped by Milan’s lack of motivation. The Rossoneri’s domestic season has been over for a while with all their energies being directed towards the Champions League campaign.
After a hard-fought and draining campaign, the Diavoli will see this trip as a frustrating delay to their summer holidays and would surely settle for a point. Neither side are strangers to draws. Milan have drawn nine times away from home this term – more than any other Serie A side – and Reggina have shared the spoils on eight occasions at the Granillo.
The Week 19 clash at the San Siro saw Milan run out 3-1 victors, but Reggina were left to rue missed chances and on another day could’ve grabbed a draw. While the Milanese have won the last five meetings between the two sides, the minnows will look back to May 2004 when they beat the Scudetto winning Milanese 2-1 and ensured their survival in the top flight.
Mazzarri has a few notable absentees for this most crucial of games. Pasquale Foggia and Alessandro Lucarelli are suspended and will be replaced by Luca Vigiani and Palmiro Di Dio respectively. Antonio Giosa and Luca Tognozzi are injured but stopper Maurizio Lanzaro has shaken off the muscular problem he sustained against Empoli. After a week of fevered anticipation and an unprecedented clamour for tickets, there promises to be a charged atmosphere as a sell-out crowd roar on Mazzarri’s men.
Milan may be drained but they have a strong squad. Carlo Ancelotti is only missing the suspended Ricardo Oliveira and Yoann Gourcuff while Ronaldo is sidelined through injury. Dida returns for Marco Storari who disappointed in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat against Udinese.
Man on fire: Nicola Amoruso (Reggina) – Playing the best football of his career, the 31-year-old took his tally to 16 with a vital brace against Empoli last weekend.
Last season: Reggina 1-4 Milan
Form guide: Reggina (D W D D D) Milan (W W D D L)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reggina (probable): Campagnolo; Lanzaro, Aronica, Di Dio; Mesto, Vigiani, Amerini, Tedesco, Modesto; Amoruso, Bianchi
Milan (probable): Dida; Oddo, Nesta, Maldini, Jankulovski; Gattuso, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Seedorf, Kaka; Gilardino

I'd go with this lineup:
Dida
Cafu, Bonera, Kaladze, Favalli
Brocchi, Pirlo, Serginho
Seedorf
Borriello, Gilardino

give cafu and favalovski the start since oddo and janku will be very tired from running up and down the flank. start gila, maybe boriello but appart from that i'd like to see a good first 11 to put on a show for the fans. my hope is that we win but siena lose so they get relegated and reggina stay up (my family is from reggio calabria) so i'd like to see the local team stay up and cuz sourthern italy need clubs in serie a.

Play the primavera team.
The internationals will be out in some days... for their NT.

Other teams will be really pissed off with us if we don't start some of our regulars in the spirit of fair play, since Reggina is in relegation trouble.

Nah, Carlo's job is to do what's best for Milan and their players, not other teams.
It Reggina's fault for being down there, it's the luck of the schedule, too.

not really they had pts deducted, they've had an alright season and would be around midtable. their goal diff is 0 which is not relegation stats.

Having our first game as Champs in front of ours fans. Finishing the season at home, then Billy would get such an awesome good-bye, not that he didn't anyways.

Seedorf
Borriello, Gilardino
I'd start Kalac, Dida's work is done. The defence is fine
Serginho can't play as part of a 3 man midfield anymore!
(not like he ever did anyway) Seedorf deserves a rest & will want to be with his new family.
I agree with the front line.
Posted by: kurtsimonw May 26 2007, 04:28 PM
Serginho could play where Seedorf did in the CL or on the left of the '2' in the 4-3-2-1 formation.
He doesn't have the enrgy to go back and forward all game, and neither does Seedorf, so he can just replace him in the team, easily.

Favalovski - I like it!
Yea, they'll be tired especially Janku who has played all season long - let him rest for his NT.
I hope Siena are relegated for their association with Giuve & the GEA!
Plus there are already too many Black&Whites in Serie A it's confusing!
Yea, my Dad's from near Reggio Calabria too (I think I said a while ago sorry)
Yea, Napoli will be back with hopefully Catania, Reggina, Cagliari & Palermo.
I'm glad Messina are down though for the same reasons as Siena + Sculli(former striker - played for Juve before them no surprise!
) was part of the Mafia like Moggi that's why he don't play anymore! Also I haven't forgotten the last game of last season against us when they butchered loads of our players before we played Barça!

Agreed Kurt, that's his place!
(or on a good day @ LW as part of a 4 in mid.)
That's exactly why he can't play as part of a 3 in mid. (sorry should have explained that myself in my 1st post)

Yea, I was pissed off when Reggina didn't put up a better fight against Giuve @ the end of last season, they only won/fixed the Scudetto by 1 point! We could have won it ourselves! Although then it probably would have been taken away from us too out of pure jealousy by Merda! (who Guido Rossi, remember him?
is a fan of!)
He was head of Telecom Italia (the company that did all the phone taps!) Before being appointed head of the FIGC (Italian FA) that awarded the Scudetto to InterMerda!
And everyone talked about Silvio & the conflict of interests
What about him?

Seems dodgy to me!

They sure won't, but like you said before the other teams in the relegation battle will mind! We've already had our name dragged through the mud - totally unjustly!
- the last thing we need is to draw any more negative attention to ourselves! There are many who believe Italian football is still unclean - Calciopoli is not over yet! The Bologna president has been banned for 6 months for libel because he said that Calciopoli has moved to Serie B (I wonder why he thinks that... Giuve?!
) Zeman has said something similar. Moratti if you recall wasn't satisfied with winning the Scudetto, instead he said he was looking forward to the rest of the outcomes in Calciopoli.

Seedorf will have oodles of time with his family because he wasn't even called up. No way in hell are Inzaghi or Ronaldo going to play, barring a major catastrophe.

I would love to see something like this
Cafu--Kala--Bonera--Favalli
---Rino---Brocchi---Sergio---
-------------Pirlo---------------
------Gilardino--Boriello-------
I remember when Pirlo used to play in this position and he was good in it, It would be nice to see him play there again, sort of like having Rui Costa play there again, even though they are different they are both playmakers unlike Kaka who is more of an attacking midfielder
Nesta, Oddo and Janku should be rested. Sergio should start on that left side of midfield, Brocchi in the center since hi has a much better passing range to that of Rino.
I liked how Boriello played last week, he put in a lot of effort so he should start again. He was better then Oli
I would also like to see Ronaldo come on at some point, since he is called up I figure that he's probably ok

Well he's been training since he came here years ago so he should be limber enough, I think it's more dust than rust that he's gathering. He's just here to make up the numbers - to 1 more 'keeper than we need!
Why did we renew his contract yet again? Just give him a job as a Trainer already! I wouldn't expect a better performance from him than Storari had - they even look the same!
Yea, no surprise about Seedorf. I am shocked Ronie's back though
- hope it's not too soon for him that he does more damage (if he plays even for a few mins.) IMO Inzaghi, Pirlo & Gattuso should be rested as well as those han mentioned.
I'd go for this:
Kalac
Bonera-Simic-Favalli-Grimi (only because there's no other option!
)
Cafu-Brocchi-Kaladze-Serginho
Borriello-Gilardino
Kaladze played as DM in '99, it'd be interesting to see it again.
han: I'm surprised @ you, you know Sergio cant play/has never played as part of a 3 man MF - he'd have a heart attack or just collapse! I agree with you about the Pirlo thing though, if he gets a few mins or is able to start that'd be great to see!
By the way, I don't care about 3rd place now (after last week's pathetic display
). Siena need a win @ Lazio which I don't think they'll get, to stay up (which I hope they don't!
) unless we beat Reggina & they draw @ Lazio. I'd rather Reggina, Catania, Chievo, Parma, Cagliari, Torino & Livorno all stay up than us get 3rd spot
Aren't I a gentleman?
Yea right!

Sergio has played in that position on more than 1 occasion, it's always used as Carlo's last role of the dice in games that we are losing, Istanbul comes to mind, replaced Seedorf, and caused havoc for Liverpool in that area, Tomasson and Sheva had 3 nealy open goal chances with crosses from him
Also last season against Lyon when we were going out on away goal, Carlo took off Pirlo put Seedorf in the middle, pushed Sergio up in Seedorf's place and put Paolo at LB.
Obviously he would drift wider then Seedorf or Yoann would since those 2 are central mids and Sergio is a winger, but I'm certain that he can play in that position without any problems
As for your formation, I can't see that happening, and Carlo said that he doesn't want to make things worse and shift the balance in the relegation battles.

Interesting that all of the regulars save only for Dida, Maldini and Seedorf were called up.
Posted by: kurtsimonw May 27 2007, 01:55 AM
I think Carlo's caved in to other relegation threatened teams being upset that Reggina may get an easier time than them.
Posted by: arivanjj May 27 2007, 04:39 AM
Mazzarri wants '150 per cent'
Reggina must beat Milan to be sure of staying in Serie A and Walter Mazzarri urged his side to make one final push.
“I ask my team to give 150 per cent, as against Milan we will need to see the same side that played that extraordinary second half at Empoli,†said the Coach.
The Amaranto were trailing 3-0 at the Stadio Castellani last weekend, but fought back to draw 3-3 and give themselves a great chance of avoiding relegation despite their 11-point Calciopoli penalty.
“That is the same team that in this tournament has done remarkable things by putting together 48 points.â€
Rossoneri boss Carlo Ancelotti has already hinted his European Champions are aiming to put in a “dignified†performance at the Granillo, but have nothing left to play for.
“Milan are always Milan,†warned Mazzarri. “Whatever line-up they opt for, in order to get a result we will still need everything to go our way. We have to hope they’re having a bad day and we excel in both attack and defence.â€
The Coach, who is most likely having his last match on the Reggina bench, must do without the suspended Pasquale Foggia and Alessandro Lucarelli.
Reggina squad: Campagnolo, Puggioni, Di Dio, Esteves, Modesto, Lanzaro, Aronica, Gazzi, Mesto, Tedesco, Missiroli, Nardini, Barillà , Amerini, Vigiani, Amoruso, Nielsen, Bianchi

Well last season he was already 34 and was running up and down the flanks making players half his age look tired and old.
It's just that he's been out so long this season that's why he doesn't seem ready for that kind of game yet, but it will only come with match fitness. So playing him there could be good for him

I don't get it, why don't Milan relegate Reggina and play properly?

If it stays the same (they're on equal points) Reggina will stay up on goal difference. We might get a draw so Siena, Siena, Vaffanculo!

I would like it better if we help relegate Juve's henchmen Siena
Posted by: han2503 May 27 2007, 02:51 PM
HT 1-0
I don't really care if we win, better if Reggina stay up imo. It would help the league if we get rid of trash like Siena and good lower table teams like Reggina stay up

I see...
Also, remeber that Borrielo is left-footed so he can't shoot with his right foot! Like Fatriano!

We are playing properly, we put a half decent side out. Aside from being a goal down we have had 3 corners to their 0 & 4 shots on target to their 1. No one can say we haven't put up a fight but don't underestimate Reggina!
Plus, what han & Porty said! Forza Reggina!
Although I don't think Milan see it the same way & are being professional!

I like Chievo as I saw the game last year at San Siro
Posted by: kurtsimonw May 27 2007, 03:53 PM
I feel for Chievo fans. Started the season in the CL. With one game left they're in 14th, and still go down.

I didn't get to see the game so I don't know how poorly we played, but this isn't really the result you want after becoming champions of Europe.. Not that we care.

Well lets look at it this way.
It's going to be an interesting summer with the transfer market.
We can look forward to the Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.
And we can also look forward to next season's CL playing as the title holders
