btw, Pirlo needs to start this one and atleast play a half, he needs to get match fit pronto

I know we can't make another 1-0 win, they have Crouch & Defoe as strikers begging.gif

Posted by: zdrossoneri Nov 24 2008, 06:38 PM

They're an English team after all. we might find it easier to score goals [I'm not underestimating them by any means - I just think their style which is a lot different to Italian teams' will allow us to play better in attack].

Defoe is injured, I think... unsure.gif

As for Crouch, I think he would give us serious problems because of his height, we tend to make the most mistakes when high balls come into our area

Posted by: kurtsimonw Nov 24 2008, 07:25 PM

Defoe was injured for the weekends game, not sure about his fitness for this one.

Anyways, I'm hoping for a destruction, Redknapp didn't leave there long ago so they still have Dirty Harrys germs, kill them I say!

Judging our current plight, I'd find it hard to underestimate anything. dry.gif Least of all opponent teams, and that too from England that we know nothing of. It's not like they're someone from the league, where players are aware of the opponents skills and faults. It'll be a tough match. Period.

You'd find it's better for your health, zd, when you take each match as a tough mountain to climb. biggrin.gif I do, and it works wonders, really. I go in thinking it'll be the toughest match of our lives, and guess what, it usually is. Been the story of the season so far. And could continue unless we see drastic improvements. Or unlimited supply of luck. Or both.

Posted by: Fillipo Simone Nov 24 2008, 07:41 PM

Porthsmouth hasn't been the same ever since Harry Redknapp left, but we should be aware of them. Hardest UEFA Cup match so far for sure. I'd say we'll play a goalless draw.

I think Wolfsburg will be our toughest match.

AS for Portsmouth, apperantly there have already been some complaints from our officials about the changing rooms at Fratton Park. Apparently they're a disaster, with mildew running along the seiling because of a leak they had when it rained

Posted by: kurtsimonw Nov 24 2008, 08:40 PM

Portmouth rose up a few divisions fairly quickly. So they're basically an EPL team with League 1 grade facilities, not nice.

Posted by: Il Diavolo Nov 24 2008, 08:49 PM

Crouch will seek revenge for Athens. laugh.gif Senderos should keep him away from Dida.

Difficult match. A draw makes sense. 1:1 with Sheva scoring of course.

Posted by: Rossoneri7 Nov 24 2008, 10:17 PM

I think a Shevchenko - Inzaghi partnership is the right combo upfront. Ronaldinho in support and Pirlo along with Ringo and Flamini

I think Kaka should play this one since he's suspended on the weekend and let Dinho get some rest, at least he should start on the bench imo.

Pirlo and Seedorf should trade a half each, so Pirlo get's match time but doesn't over do it. Maybe start Emerson instead of Gattuso, he's earned some rest.

Senderos and Bonera should start in the middle, no more Kaladze pls

Posted by: Habitant Nov 25 2008, 07:25 AM

i'd rather we play well and win on the weekend, a draw will suffice.

didn't know Kaka' was suspended for the next league game .. Well, in that case then yeah Ronnie needs a rest. and about the Swiss, I hope he shows as solid a performance as he did in the last UEFA match.

as always i hope we win ofc but i would like us to come out of this match with no injurys so we can be fresh for Palermo and so on in !!

Posted by: zdrossoneri Nov 25 2008, 03:19 PM

I wonder whether Kaka's absence from the Palermo game will be a blow for us [not having such a quality player who, even when not in his best day, can decide a game] or a blessing in disguise [we could play with two strikers].

Hope to see Pato in that game at least, preferably alongside Borriello.

Palermo conceeded 18 goals so far, which is more then every other team above them at moment. That enough means we'll score most likely. Only question is if we'll struggle back in the defense once again. Is Kaladze suspended now?

But as far as Serie A goes, he shouldn't even be called up for the matches

You're not alone. unsure.gif I don't like the guy one bit, but even I have to admit he has a quality-to-craptality ratio of 51:49. Meaning out of hundred, Kaladze will be good in two more matches than he'll be crap. Oh so Pirlo has now turned into a striker also along with Seedorf, Kaka and Dinho? Galliani is pushing the term 'old and senail' to it's limits I'm afraid.

As for tomorrows match, apperantly Gazzetta was predicting this formation a couple of days ago

Dida

Zambrotta-Bonera-Favalli-Antonini

Flamini-Emerson-Ambrosini

Kaka

Shevchenko-Inzaghi

That midfield makes me want to puke.gif

Pirlo needs to play at least a half, we need him to be sharp for the game against Palermo, at least give him a half and switch him with Seedorf.

James ready for Milan epic
Wednesday 26 November, 2008

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James believes tomorrow's game against Milan is the biggest in the club's history.

While the Rossoneri have picked up six points from six in UEFA Cup Group E so far, Portsmouth are looking to bounce back from last month's 3-0 defeat against Braga.

“I'm on the eve of one of Portsmouth's biggest days,” England 'keeper James told Sky Sports News.

“When I joined the club this is what I wanted to do - make history. This is possibly the biggest fixture ever at Fratton Park.

“Tomorrow will be something to remember for Portsmouth players and supporters.

“We won't be overawed because this is the sort of challenge we look forward to.”

Carlo Ancelotti is expected to make significant changes to his side for the testing away day.

Good read from The Gaurdian

QUOTE
'They'll be in for a bit of a shock' says James as Ancelotti and his team step back in time

Fashionable Milan visit down-at-heel Portsmouth, and the contrast between the two could hardly be greater

The face of Carlo Ancelotti, the Milan coach, wore the uncertain half-smile of the embarrassed. It was as if he suspected that an awful practical joke was being played upon him. Ancelotti, visiting Fratton Park yesterday to prepare for this evening's Uefa Cup tie against Portsmouth, might have wondered why he had been brought to an ugly piece of architectural memorabilia when he had told the driver he wanted to be taken to Portsmouth Football Club.

He was diplomacy itself, choosing his words carefully, like someone eating mackerel and feeling for the bones. "It's a good club," he said defiantly. "It's an old school English ground. The pitch looks good. We are used to travelling and getting on with things."

Fratton Park, which every Southampton supporter will tell you is, spelt backwards, "nottarf krap," is the sort of stadium that encourages visitors to wipe their feet on departure. Ancelotti's shoes twitched, as if in a hurry to transport their owner from the premises as quickly as possible. Milan, after all, is the fashion capital of an almost neurotically fashion-conscious country.

Fratton Park, the Gulag Archipelago of the Premier League, is situated close to the Portsmouth mudflats, in the middle of the hunched houses and tight streets of a busy community and its distance from Milan's San Siro is best measured in light years. The Italian club has lifted the European Cup on seven occasions. The San Siro can hold 80,000; the official capacity here is 20,000.

This is the smallest stadium in the Premier League and was built in 1898, the year singer Gracie ("Sally") Fields and western film star Randolph Scott were also born. WG Grace was still batting, Queen Victoria was on the throne.

They played an Olympic Games football match here in 1948 - they did the same thing at Brighton's Goldstone Ground, which has since been knocked down.

Fratton Park now has the look of a cowshed on life support, though many of the club's supporters remain fiercely loyal to the place and a terrific atmosphere can be generated when the Pompey Chimes are in the evening air.

"They have a good record at home - they play better at home," added Ancelotti, before revealing that Kaka would start tonight and Ronaldinho would be on the bench against a Portsmouth without Jermain Defoe, Sol Campbell, John Utaka and Lassana Diarra.

Then there was the Chelsea misfit Andriy Shevchenko, who Ancelotti also plans to play. Shevchenko scored just nine Premier League goals in his two years at Stamford Bridge but the coach said: "He is one of the best strikers in the world. Chelsea paid for a quality striker but it didn't work out. He wasn't able to express himself to his full extent as a striker at Chelsea." Chelsea, he said, played with only three forwards and Shevchenko wasn't a winger and was never going to replace Didier Drogba.

Tonight, the Milan players might be more worried about expressing themselves in the notoriously small changing rooms. "They will be in for a bit of a shock," said the Pompey goalkeeper David James before they arrived. "It is a proper, and I mean proper, throwback."

There have been many brave new dusks for Portsmouth supporters. In the 1970s the then chairman John Deacon planned to build a new ground on the old city airfield and a couple of decades later Jim Gregory got planning permission to erect a stadium on the St Johns Playing Fields in Farlington, though this was thrown out because the area was a grazing ground for Brent geese.

When Milan Mandaric rescued the club from bankruptcy in 1999 he too promised a new ground. But Pompey supporters were still grazing at Fratton Park when he left the club in 2006. Then, last year, there was talk of a sensational £600m new stadium on Portsmouth's waterfront, a bowl-shaped ground surrounded by 1,500 luxury flats and an "urban beach". AC Milan, who have only beaten one English club on English soil in 12 attempts - Manchester United in 2005 - might have felt comfortable in such surroundings. Having won their first two matches in this competition, though, they are virtually through to the last 32.

This week Portsmouth manager Tony Adams described the fixture as "Portsmouth's biggest game of all time", and "the most prestigious game this club will ever play". Yesterday he sounded a little more downbeat. "Don't 'big it' too much," he implored. "It's about three points. It's feet-on-the-floor time. I don't care what Milan think about Fratton Park."

James, who seemed to have read Adams' earlier script, said yesterday: "We've got to play up the occasion. That is what football people want. They will be talking about this match for years to come, whatever the result."

Another James, Henry James, said rather harshly: "Portsmouth is dirty but it is also dull," when he visited the place in 1879 - and that was 19 years before Fratton Park was built.

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO
"Andriy has paid for the two years in which he played little. When he came to us he worked a lot and now he has found a good condition. Tomorrow I think we can play well. At Chelsea he suffered from the fact that they play with just one striker, Drogba, and two wingers. And he certainly isn't a winger. He was paid for what he was worth at the time, he was one of the strongest strikers in the world, then it's true, his performances did not live up to expectations."

Carlo played Sheva as a winger against Braga at San Siro... what is he talking about?!

CARLO HAS NO CLUE ANYMORE. SOONER OR LATER YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THAT.

Zambrotta laugh.gif (Although slightly redeemed by his assist for Pippo's goal)

Why was Bonera not playing? How did Emerson manage so stay on the pitch for 90 minutes and Kaka withdrawn by 60-70? How did Senderos manage to end up at Milan? Why is Ancelotti such a dumb@ss, with no real tactical sense or man management skills?

You've answered it there yourself really. If we play terrible football, what do you expect the fans to say? With a win they'll be happy with the points, but it doesn't give them confidence in the team. Carlo isn't thrilling or surprising.. or talented. He's a bad coach. zambrotta was behing the player senderos was standing freely thinking that zambrotta will do it but b4 that sender made a poor clearne i think if a decent defender would have been there he would have not let the ball get to kabould

wasn't that the 2nd goal...
regardless... If I am not mistaken one of Pompey's two goals was Senderos' failure to connect with a header.

I was incredibly optimistic about Milan and a relatively fierce Carlo supporter. Now the opposite is true, i have no faith in sections of the squad and i have no faith left whatsoever in Ancelotti

Last one, I swear, but GCarlo is expressing his gratitude over the win, calling Pippo "my hero." and saying he loves him. I thought he didn't care about the result?

Oh, my! No, not the last one. sad.gif I need my GCarlo fix just like you need your Dida fix. Keep them coming.

Favalli needs to retire..He's 36 and would be 37 in january...He can't pull a maldini...He's already 40....Senderos should be loaned back..What happened to Darmian..Try him out Ancelotti.I remember him giving Amauri problem in the Trofeo match at d beginning of the season

I had those exact same feelings about today's match, because I was so looking forward to it. Most of you have probably never seen me so hot and bothered like this before.
