AC Milan - Milanfan.com _ News Dump _ Serie A approves 12-man benches

Posted by: Jack Bauer Aug 21 2012, 07:11 PM

Serie A teams will be allowed to have 12 players on the bench from this season, announced the FIGC.

The change in rules was confirmed by the Federation after a request from the Lega Serie A and President Maurizio Beretta.

This gives clubs the opportunity to hand a list of 23 players to the referee before a match in Serie A, the Coppa Italia, Italian Super Cup or Primavera youth league.

“This decision for the ‘long bench’ is something I have always fought for and finally we achieved it,” said Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini.

“It is a choice dictated by common sense and it’s about time we got here. This way we will no longer have frustrated players, as all of them will feel involved in the match.

“Just look at Palermo. We have two players for every role, so we can only benefit from this new development.”

Roma boss Zdenek Zeman is more ‘old school’ about having seven players on the bench.

“It doesn’t change much for me, as in my experience a total squad of 18 is sufficient.”

I like it.

18 players is enough. But in games where you're winning/losing easy, it gives you that opportunity to throw on some kids to see how they do in a competitive league game.

The only downside is it gives bigger clubs an excuse to buy more top players.

Yep, I'm with Zeman on this one. It's pointless if you ask me.

I like how it refers to having 7 players on the bench as 'old school'. Some people must have short memories.

I like it as well.

Why? I mean, what's the point really?

What do you mean why? Because you get to have a wider range of choices on the bench. Also, as Zamparini said, "this way we will no longer have frustrated players, as all of them will feel involved in the match".

Wider choice? Hmh, I think 7 players provide enough choices, but then again, yes - maybe everyone will be happier this way.

Great, we'll have 12 mediocre players on the bench instead of 7 biggrin.gif

There was a few times last season when you were annoyed when Pippo was left out of the squad and couldn't be given a cameo appearance in a 4-0 win or anything, this will allow that to happen.

But the main obstacle were not the rules; it was Allegri cool.gif
