Oddo: "At last, Milan!"

Massimo Oddo has spoken of his relief at finally completing his long-awaited move to Milan.

“I had wanted to return to Milan for some time, so I am very happy to be here,” said the defender.

Lazio agreed terms for the player this week following a drawn-out negotiation process and Oddo signed a contract until 2011 this afternoon.

He made the switch in exchange for £5.5m and winger Pasquale Foggia, who was already on loan at the Stadio Olimpico.

“We are in this trophy room that is rich with so many victories and I remember seeing some of this silverware lifted by the Rossoneri when I was in the youth squad,” he noted at his presentation Press conference.

“Now I want to hold up a trophy, to win with this jersey, and I definitely have strong motivation for this new adventure.”

Oddo was frozen out of the Lazio squad for Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Milan, but is ready to make his debut for the new club against Parma this weekend.

“I am at the disposal of the Coach. I trained up until a few days ago, so I am in good shape.”

It’s reported the right-back wanted to be given the Number 30 jersey, a reminder of the 3-0 triumph Lazio celebrated over Roma in this season’s derby, but it was already taken and he has instead been given the 44 shirt.

“It was a long negotiation process and I always hoped it would be resolved, but I am accustomed to being relaxed and certain only after pen is put to paper.”

I`m very interested...whats your opinion on Oddo after these first months?

Well I`m very confused. He is capable of makeing brilliant and idiotic things in one and the same match. But I have that feeling he isn`t quite up to his role, the importance of Milan and the big matches. Against Inter and Bayern he was really poor. I mean, he is the only Milan starting player (winger/RB) whoose crossing really can make me red and shame. In some occasions his crossing is like Cafu`s at his best, and sometimes he crosses even worse than Å imić. Really disgracefull...

But all in all his passing really isn`t precise enough and I suppose Oddo is not a real long term solution as RB, or? unsure.gif

I think he is. He comes from the Milan youth system and I think he counts as such while starting next year every team will have to have 2 player from their youth side into the team. That's also the reason why acmilan.com bother posting the results of the youth teams this year... rolleyes.gif

Well in general, he's... not bad. He's good both in the attack and defence but he makes idiotic mistakes. His technique is not anything great and he can't cross while running but he has decent tackling abilities.

Normally (if we did not need a new player for every department that is biggrin.gif ) I'd say we'd be better off buying another RB but I think if we get a world-class CB there won't be a great need.

Posted by: fresh_prince7 Apr 6 2007, 05:04 PM

I think he's very good offensively. Provided a wonderful assist to pirlo and a perfect volley cross to gila (who somehow didn't score). rolleyes.gif

In the bayern game I thought he looked very fragile at the back. The sort of player as an attacker you'd feel confident in beating him time and time again.

Those of you who get to watch every game would have a better opinion and maybe that was just a stray game for him.

In comparison to nesta who just seems to be in the right positions when the ball or players are in threatening positions (besides his one lapse of concentration). Obviously different players, different class but oddo didn't in my opinion have that presense.

Posted by: Jack Sparrow Apr 6 2007, 05:49 PM

For me the only top class Italian RB is Zambo. But the second best is easily Oddo. You only have to look at the general muck pretending to be RBs these days.

However is it just me or is there a consensus that the fullback quality in world football has been seeing a sudden downturn?

I mean just consider the LB position...we had Maldini, then Carlos and now who....

Posted by: KillerMax Apr 6 2007, 08:49 PM

Oddo needs time. He will overcome.

Italy in particular has never seen great RBs. While at the LB department... man, Facchetti, Cabrini and Maldini have kept Italy in universe class for 4 decades!! Amazing trio... I cannot name any other one so great, in any position!

As for the future... well I don't know. In the 90's we had two fullbacks in Paolo and R. Carlos who both deserved the Ballon d'Or... we're far from that level now but there are some great players such as Daniel Alves!

Oddo: AC Milan move now justified
tribalfooball.com - April 18, 2007

Massimo Oddo says his decision to quit Lazio for AC Milan in January has been justified by their run to the Champions League semis.
The fullback said: "I feel I'm becoming part of this group, but I know I'm capable of being able to still give more and to improve my performances. Being part of this Milan team is the most important experience. Above all else, the chance to reach the Champions League final is incredible. For any player, this would be a career highlight."

Oddo: It was the right move

Milan defender Massimo Oddo has admitted that joining the Rossoneri in January was one of the best decisions of his career.

The World Cup winner headed north after almost five seasons with Lazio and is now just weeks away from appearing in his first Champions League Final.

“I believe that moving here was the right choice for me, the best decision I could take,” noted the right-back. “I have joined an amazing squad.

“I have been here for four months, we are fourth in the table and we are set to play for the Champions League. We have reached some important objectives.”

The Italian international has immediately won the faith of boss Carlo Ancelotti and Oddo maintains that the Coach will still be at Milan next term.

“In football the only thing that counts are results and he is one of the tacticians who has won the most,” explained the former Biancocelesti captain. “He is doing great and we are all sure he will stay.

“What we have done this year is excellent, especially if you consider what happened at the start of the season.

“We have achieved these results together, as a group, and the Coach kept us united despite the difficulties.

“We had nerves of steel and the club was always there to support us, as well as the fans. The Athens Final is a prize that must be shared between all of us.”

The stopper also dismissed fears that his side will lack motivation in their remaining League games against Catania and Udinese by focusing purely on the Athens showdown with Liverpool.

“Closing the championship is the main issue,” he added. “If we win against Catania, we will secure fourth place and this will allow us to concentrate on the Final.

“It is a big advantage for us and that’s what will drive us. From that point of view there are no problems at all.”

What a year for Oddo.

» World Cup Champion with Italy.
» As Lazio captain moves in December to "his club": Milan to play the Champions League.
» Wins the Champions League with Milan as a first 11 player.

This guy is the man.
Now... he just misses the Tokyo - FIFA World Club Championship, competition that he'll play next December.

And he'll have the best year of his career.

Before the second leg in Munich I was talking to Massimo Ambrosini and we said if we won that, then we would win the Champions League," revealed Oddo.

"Luckily we were right.

"It has certainly been a fantastic year when I have won the World Cup and the Champions League. I could not have asked for better!

"To be perfectly honest, I don’t entirely feel the World Cup was ‘mine’ as I only played around 20 minutes, but I was always ready and tried to make myself useful.

"It was a wonderful experience."

The former Lazio man then thanked his Milan teammates for making him feel at home, despite only having arrived in January.

"I must thank the Coach and my teammates for helping me to settle immediately," he said.

"It is not easy to join a big club mid-season and learn their system. I must also thank Lazio, as if I am here now it is at least partly because of that side."

The celebrations, however, had left the right-back with a scar. "I’ve lost my winner’s medal," he revealed. "I’ve got to find it again or get them to make me another one!"

btw, just want to say that I thought Oddo was probably joint second best player against Liverpool on Weddnesday with Nesta (Pippo obviously coming in 1st) He was great in defence, had Zenden and Riise in his pocket throughout the game) and knew when to stay back and defend and when to go up and help out in attack.

Just wanted to point that out, since Oddo has probably been 1 of our unsung heros ever since he came in January and helped turn around our season with Ronaldo

But, from January and on I saw that its the opposite. He needs to learn crosses more.

I`ve pointed that one out for about a million times. His crossing makes me allways red ..blush.gif..I mean, with him you never know, sometimes he finds himself in a inpossible position and manages to assist or do something nice, but then again, there are a plenty of ordinary situations in which he barely finds any of our players.

I think he mainly always goes for pace rather than precision with his crosses, corners and free kicks. But I think he can do both for examply against Bayern Munich he delivered a couple of crosses that were basically laid on a plate for Gila and then that lob for Pirlo's goal.

I think he just needs to start making better decisions between when to go for pace and when to go for precision.

we certainly have more balance now, and it's one of the factors that helped us win Champions League,

Cafu and Serginho as full-backs or Jankulovski and Oddo?

I'm pretty sure Serginho's about 5th in rank for the Left-Back position. tongue.gif

Janku's got that position nailed down, Kaladze, Favalli and Paolo would be next in line. I think he's strictly 'Seedorf' now.

Oddo hungry for glory

Milan defender Massimo Oddo is convinced that their Champions League success is just the first of many more triumphs.

The Rossoneri claimed their seventh European Cup by defeating Liverpool in Athens last week, but the Germany '06 winner is adamant that his side are still hungry for honours.

“The season which has just ended has been very positive, both for the World Cup win and for the Champions League victory,” said Oddo.

“However, I don’t think that this means we can’t do even better. We have set ourselves other objectives and we want to win everything!”
king.gif  king.gif

Oddo is currently on international duty ahead of the Euro 2008 qualifiers with the Faroe Islands and Lithuania on June 2 and 6.

However, Milan teammate Alessandro Nesta is not at Coverciano after he followed in the footsteps of Francesco Totti by refusing a call-up.

“I know why Nesta decided not to join us this time, but he will tell you,” he noted. “In any case I don’t think this means that he won’t play for the Nazionale again.

“All that we must do now is focus on our next two matches as we know that there are no easy ties in the game anymore.

“We could say that the match with the Faroe Islands can be considered a good training session in view of our trip to Lithuania, where we will be in for a very difficult time.”

The Azzurri are currently fourth in Group B behind Ukraine, Scotland and France and will face the Faroe Islands in Torshavn on Saturday.

The World Cup winners will then return to Italy to train at Milanello – Milan’s base – before flying to Lithuania on June 5.

We Still Haven't Lost, Says Oddo

Milan were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening as the Rossoneri lost further ground from the top positions in Serie A.

Massimo Oddo is still optimistic about Milan's Serie A chances, despite the team suffering its third consecutive league draw on Saturday evening against Parma, following the draws against Fiorentina and Siena.

"This is not a difficult situation because we have never lost," explained the former Lazio player. "The fact is that when they reach us, we unbalance ourselves forward. We want to win at all cost and we take some extra risk."

The Milan full-back went on to describe Parma's goal.

"It was an unfortunate situation. There is a lot of disappointment because with a win we would have more points now.

"However, if on Sunday everything goes wrong, we would still be 6 points away from the top spot," said optimistically Oddo.

The Italian international explained that it is not a mentality problem.

"Milan always plays with the same conviction, both in the league and the Champions League. It's not Milan that changes, but the opponents. In the league teams like Parma arrive and they are used to suffer and defend themselves."

Much more than his crossing, I enjoy reading what he tells.

Posted by: august_milan Dec 24 2007, 11:49 PM

i dunno why people are all for oddo, i dunno if people dont see the mistakes he makes like i do cuz people because there blinded by the fact that milan actually baught a defender thats wasnt a free transfer or if its just me. especially in last years champions league id say 50-60% of the goals were his fault. either poor defending or not markin his man.
i dont think by assisting one goal for every 10 you let in is a good staistic to me.
i think he is a medeoker defender with minimal skill on the ball that likes to go forward n gets in space, which i give him credit for...but i cannot sleep over the fact that as a winger he is so pathetic at crossing, he will send in a cross with no one in the box or only one mabe two players in the box when the defending team is playin 10 men behind the ball. waste of posession.
For the amount of crosses he sends in throughout a game i dont think there are as many threatening ones as there should be. I think he is only playin over cafu becuase he can actually play a full 90 mins, if both oddo n cafu could both only play 60 mins and you comepare their skill level cafu would start over oddo hands down.

Posted by: dst Dec 25 2007, 03:17 AM

Oddo has been disappointing so far this season. I think he was very good last season, especially considering the fact that he was a new acquisition that has no time to get to know his teammates' playing style but was made a starter from day one... He's not the best player either...

I hope he gets back to his best after the Christmas break.

Posted by: arivanjj Dec 25 2007, 03:20 AM

i don't think his defending has been as bad... but certainly there has been no spark going forward

Posted by: august_milan Dec 25 2007, 03:44 AM

mabe im just a little biased because he came from lazio haha...but i guess he will do untill milan find a really good deal to fill in the leaks...but its not like im the only one that thinks his crossing is below par.

Posted by: han2503 Dec 25 2007, 08:16 AM

Oddo just needs to find his form again.

As I said in the previous thread, if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have gotten as far as we did last season. Our real problem is on the left.

But hopefully Oddo will pick up his form again after the xmas break. He started the season well but his performances started dropping by the game as time wore on, maybe the break will do him some good, that goes for the rest of the players that are playing below par (Rino the most)

It's really rare to see footballers plan for a life beyond the playing fields.

I mean, think of a bloke like Rooney. He's probably finished high school. That's it! I know he earns a lot of money, but after 35?? How does he expect to live doing nothing.

Why not? Most people would be happy to work just till mid 30's and not worry anout money again. He earns 100k+ pounds per week plus he does commercials and other stuff.

Yeah, but most of them live an extravagant life style. Away from the cameras they are used to yachts and mansions. I mean within 5 years or so (post retirement) they wont be able to live the way they used to. Of course Becks is a different case.

The smartest player I know of is Dennis Bergkamp .. He invested in real estate and several funds (this he did while playing, even in his prime). Another one, is Ronaldo he has a restaurant chain in Brazil (since his Madrid days).

Posted by: kurtsimonw Jan 16 2008, 12:38 AM

I agree in a way.

The players, while still having a fair bit of money, won't have anything close to what they're used to. It'll be a reality check for them, unless they get jobs in television or something!

Posted by: IoRDanCHo Jan 16 2008, 02:20 AM

I don't like Zambrota, but if Massimo countinues to play like this, Zambrota would be a nice addition to our club, to switch positions with Oddo sometimes wink.gif

And about your little discussion up there: Don't worry about them, they all have something to do, when they retire! Maldini has a fashion company with Vieri. Gattuso has a restaurant also. Some of our Brazilians are having their own busines in Brazil. Kaha is going to be a President of his own country tongue.gif KaKa can continue modeling and so on. And don't forget that they have wifes who also work tongue.gif And some of then are doing really good wink.gif

Oddo really needs to find his form.. he may miss Euro 08 if he continues like this.

Posted by: KillerMax Mar 6 2008, 04:05 PM

Anyone else thinks Oddo is pissing the whole team off? I mean the guy literally wastes +75% of his crosses... Everybody works hard to get the ball upfront and then anticipate at least a normal cross in the box and Oddo is over there on the right side getting in his own way, going in circles a couple times and then shooting the ball into the stands... He looks so out of sorts and clueless sometimes with those big eyes that makes him look astonished...

Posted by: dst Mar 6 2008, 07:20 PM

What irritates me the most is not his crosses. It's that he does not use his pace. He is by no means a slow player. Not the fastest one but he can take on most defenders... he never tries to play the 1-2 or to run past his defender... if there's a man marking him he passes to the midfieldr who is closer to him, then the latter passes to Oddo again who misdudges it and conceded a free-throw... how many times have you seen that happens this season??

Oddo's crossing's are terrible? Old news... I was the one against bringing Oddo last year, and it was exactly cause he poor crossing and offensive positioning. He can cross and shoot hard, but that's it.

But, he's a solid defender. I'd kept him as bench material.

The thing that makes me pissed off is that Ancelotti still plays him as if it was Cafu. It's just bilnd! How can we play the same tactic with Sergio/Cafu and Janku/Oddo??

He said that he feels well and that he believes he's recovered from the surgery and has already been doing some physical therapy type work.

Corriere: Barcelona declines Milan's offer for a trade between Oddo and Zambrotta

Milan has been a heavy hammer in the mercato, early on, so as to fix the reasons behind the poor results of this season.

And one of the targets, that Milan have declared for sometime now is Gianluca Zambrotta, who had declared that he would very much like a return to Italy and preferably to the Rossoneri. Milan's middleman in the transfer dealings with Spain, had met with three of Barca's top figures Laporta, Begherstian (spell), and Soriano. The meeting was about halting all dealings between Milan and Barca till the end of LaLiga and Serie A respectively, at the 18th of May.

Massimo Oddo has spoken of his disbelief at being left out of the Euro 2008 squad. “I didn’t expect it,” said the Milan man.

The full-back has been a regular in the Giro Azzurro since the appointment of Roberto Donadoni in 2006, but the latter omitted him from his 24-man preliminary party earlier this week.

“It’s an exclusion that burns me and I sincerely didn’t expect it,” noted the former Verona and Lazio man.

“Two years of my total disposal, sacrifices and acceptance of responsibility have been trampled on in the space of a few weeks.”

Donadoni seemed to defend his decision to ignore Oddo by focusing on the recent knee meniscus surgery that they player underwent, but the World Cup winner insists that was irrelevant.

“I would have reached a more than satisfying level of fitness two weeks before the tournament kicked off,” he added.

“In all honesty, the minimum I would have expected was to have my physical condition verified – if Donadoni’s consideration and faith in me hadn’t changed that is.”

Italy will travel to Euro 2008 with two right-backs in the form of Roma’s Christian Panucci and Gianluca Zambrotta of Barcelona.

I like Oddo, but he's got no-one else to blame but himself. He's had a poor season, and players should be picked on current form, not past achievements.

I think Oddo is a good player - he's just been poor recently. He's certainly no Cafu, but would be ideal as a backup for RB.

But we need someone who can consistency get down the right flank and put in decent crosses - Oddo cannot do this every game.

Not a good move from Milan, just when we have a back-up for Zambrotta ...

Too much to expect Oddo to play second choice throughout the season I guess. At least now he's got CL. It was a good move on Milan's part. We have Bonera, Antonini and Darmian.

So NOW his crossing ability comes back. Gr.

Tonight was the testimonial match for Oliver Kahn, in which a Bayern XI played a Germany XI.

Oddo played 75 minutes for the Bayern side, his first official appearance for the club. Miroslav Klose converted one of his crosses for a goal for the Bayern XI. (The game ended 1-1).

He also gave a brief interview to the Bayern website (I wish acmilan.com was as good at translating into English!). Selected quotes from the interview (http://www.fcbayern.t-com.de/en/news/news/2008/16861.php?fcb_sid=80b247492b715561de120b6dd7aa1507 to entire article):

QUOTE
Oddo himself is thrilled at the opportunity to join Bayern. "Coming here was the best decision I could have made," the World Cup, Champions League and World Club Cup winner declared. He is now keen to add to his honours collection with the Bavarians. "I want to prove I'm worth my wages," he insisted, "although I can only do that with the support of the whole team.“ Oddo is confident of receiving the support he needs. "My first impression is that we have a very strong squad.“

The new arrival will naturally receive plenty of assistance from Luca Toni, both on and off the field. "Leaving your home country for a new culture and a new league is certainly a risk," he acknowledged, explaining that the presence of his national team-mate had been a factor in his decision to come to Munich. "The fact that Luca is at Bayern was certainly an argument in favour. He's told me a lot of good things about Bayern.“

The pair will be team-mates at club level in just a few days from now, as Oddo will be in the squad for Oliver Kahn's testimonial on Tuesday evening. "That's when we'll see him for the first time," Klinsmann confirmed. Massimo Oddo has arrived at Bayern.

No wonder why he said something didn't feel right at Milan. our players' problems is all psychological. Pirlo's, Oddo's, Gattuso's, etc. probably just a matter of time before Kaka's form drops too (if it hasn't already).

If the players can't play like they did before & during the World Cup, I think, is because either they're not motivated anymore or there's a problem with Carlo (he probably bores them!). bringing in a new coach is the least the management should do at the end of this season.

i agree with ZD, right on. It seems that carlo's time is edging closer to an end. They say no coach should stay at a club more than 4-5 years because it can have negative effects on the players. There are ofcourse exceptions but that is a small percentage.

Galliani said this in the Paolo Maldini DVD. biggrin.gif For the first time in his life he was right. Coaches do have a shelf life, bar a Ferguson or two. 4 to 5 years is it.

Ferguson changes his assistant every couple of years. that's the key to his longevity (apart from being a great coach, of course). besides, Man U brings in a few first team players every season. Carlo will never be able to do a Ferguson at Milan, because of those reasons...

Oddo hopes for Bayern stay
Friday 9 January, 2009

Milan-owned defender Massimo Oddo has indicated that he would be happy to stay at Bayern Munich after his loan period expires.

The Azzurri stopper has thrived in the Bundesliga after a tough season in Serie A and has regained a place in the national side.

Oddo is due to return to Milan at the end of the current campaign, but it seems that he would happy to stay at the Allianz Arena.

“My time here at Bayern has been a real experience for me, both as a player and a person,” Oddo told Die Roten's website.

“I'm really happy in Munich. We have a great team with lots of good players. There's great team spirit and we all get on really well.

“The Bundesliga is also entertaining. In Italy there are normally three or maybe four teams looking for the Scudetto, but here there are lots more and the League is more open and exciting.

“My loan deal ends in the summer, but I could easily imagine myself staying in Munich.

“However, I can't make the decision by myself - it's up to my club, the Coach and the management.”

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jan9g.html

Unless he made it clear he'd only stay as a first choice I think it was a mistake to loan him out. If Zambrotta gets injured we'll be screwed! Besides, the latter cannot always play, we'd have more options with Oddo in the squad.

I doubt he'll stay at Bayern, he will probably be called back. Unless we sign someone else that is.

Posted by: Fillipo Simone Jan 9 2009, 09:21 PM

Thing is, he's not satisfied with as a Zambrotta backup. That's why we've loaned him out in first place I think. That said, the thesis that he didn't want to spent time at Milan as bench player even after a horrific season in which he was one of the main protagonists speaks for itself. Why would he accept sit on the bench next season, after a medicre season at Bayern?

Oddo returns to Milan
Friday 22 May, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Massimo Oddo will be returning to Milan after Bayern Munich announced they would not be taking up their option.

The former Italian international was loaned out to the Bundesliga outfit last summer with the option to buy him outright at the end of the season.

However, this evening Bayern Coach Jupp Heynckes confirmed that the club would not be taking that opportunity.

Heynckes took over for the last few weeks of the campaign following Jurgen Klinsmann’s dismissal and the Coach next year will be Louis Van Gaal.

Oddo will return to Milan next month, but it remains to be seen whether they will keep hold of the player or loan him out again elsewhere.

Yes, he had a bad season with Bayern, but he will be a good chip for our summer transfer deals. At least better then Brocchi or Donati.

Posted by: Minami May 25 2009, 07:35 PM

Perhabs we will even let him stay here. We need some defenders, and he wasn't that bad at Milan....

Posted by: Fillipo Simone May 25 2009, 08:05 PM

I don't think we will, he's ageing fast and now is the best time to ship him off to a respectable discount. But maybe the fact that he's a youth product could be a point.

Posted by: TriniKing_CE Jun 7 2009, 10:14 PM

From transfermarketweb:

Former Italian international right-back Massimo Oddo has just returned to AC Milan after a loan period at Bayern Munich and told Italian radio station Radio Erre 2 : "The time I spent in Germany with Bayern was a positive experience for me. Now I am back in Italy and I will talk with AC Milan club officials about the near future. I think that there is a 50% chance for me to remain at AC Milan for next season".

He was quite good in the second half of 2007. After that? A big fins down from Fishdoll.

He was dreadful for Bayern last year when he did play, too.

Milannews is reporting (not sure where they got it from) that he'll only leave to go back to Lazio -- he's apparently refused offers from Stoke & Blackburn -- and that Milan is waiting on the results of De Silvestri's knee exam (he got hurt in the U21 game) before making a bid.

It was Foggia + money, not that much but a decent amount, and of course Foggia is worth more than him thesedays. He was decent in our CL run of 07, after that he hasn't attributed much to anything. These things happen with players over 30..

I'm all for Oddo staying on IF he resigns and receives a third string's salary. Realistically he's not a bad third stringer.

Realistically, Oddo shouldn't be playing football.

Becouse he is too old or becouse he never knew anything about football ?

Why would we need him for the Champions League? Isn't his incompetence in Serie A enough of a red flag?

Well, we don't have substitute for him except of Abate who hasn't experience for Champions League, but Oddo has.

The latter.

Oddo is the most useless piece of player in the whole Serie A. I'd take everyone, I mean everyone, over him.

Nah. Oddo had at least two good games - the Milan leg of the 2007 CL semi against MU (he marked christine out of the game) and the subsequent Italy-Portugal friendly where he did the same.

Sadly though, he's done precious little since.

I'm pretty sure Oddo's strategy when he takes over Milan will be to cross from the midfield. laugh.gif
